Nine-year-old Parker Millhouse was born without a leg. Despite missing his right leg, Parker lives each day with a positive spirit and enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. He is also the inspiration and driving force behind Iron-Leg Corp, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. The organization, created by president Matthew Millhouse and vice president Sean Laukhuff, became an official 501(c)(3) in April 2021. The board of Iron-Leg Corp. has grown since then, adding treasurer Mike Canarelli, secretary Darren Hershock and board members Matt York, Bill Coder, Andrea Schopf, and Josh Holland. In September 2021, Iron-Leg Corp. hosted a golf outing as its first fundraiser. The organization raised $38,000 at the event, and from that, the organization was

However, the reality is that need exists, and a person in need could live right next door. In the Hempfield School District (HSD) specifically, school counselors and social workers realized that it was necessary to have a clothing bank for students and their families. As a result, in 2015, the HSD formed a partnership with Landisville Mennonite Church to provide tangible support with the Hempfield Clothing Bank. At one time, the clothing bank operated in a school building, but it outgrew that space. The church was

One time, a Hempfield walking group decided to donate a basket filled with personal hygiene items, including soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Although this donation was made several years ago around Christmastime, church members have continued to restock the basket for clients. In addition to providing families within the HSD with clothing, a positive outcome of the Hempfield Clothing Bank is that no clothes go to waste. Volunteers take inventory periodically, and extra goods are taken to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Material Resource Center in Ephrata, which processes and ships quality material resources domestically and internationally. Proceeds made from the sale of these materials are used for

able to relocate a Sunday school classroom to make space in the back of the building, which was then transformed into a fully stocked clothing bank. The Hempfield Clothing Bank, located at Landisville Mennonite Church, 3320 Bowman Road, Landisville, is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon during the school year or by appointment. Everything at the clothing bank is free to those who need it. People may enter through the double doors in the back of the church. Donations can be made when the clothing bank is open, or a drop-off time can be arranged with the church secretary by calling 717-898-0071. Hempfield Clothing Bank coordinator Fannie Miller suggested that people donate washed and repaired or gently used clothing for people of all ages and sizes, and new items,

MCC’s global relief efforts. Miller noted that when a need exists, a donation arrives that covers it. “I’ll look over things and see what we need, and then next thing I know it’s on our doorstep,” stated Miller. “I call it the ‘loaves and fishes’ operation because it seems like it multiplies. We do have more than we need right now, but you never quite know who’s going to be needing and what’s going to happen. It’s nice to know that we’re helping someone with no strings attached.” “We want to be present in our community in a meaningful way and have our neighbors know that we care about them and we’re glad to offer a tiny bit of help when we can,” said Landisville Mennonite Church pastor Gina Burkhart. Dayspring Plans Open House

HEMPFIELD

Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The open house will feature a Valentine’s Day party that will focus on 1 Corinthians 13:13, “The greatest of these is love.” Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, a method of thinking and living by God’s Truth and the method of education used at Dayspring. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs, both of which offer field studies. God is viewed as the author of all subjects, and children begin reasoning from the Bible, noted headmaster Dan Stone. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first

Typically, Night to Shine is held in person, but due to the pandemic, organizers have switched to a virtual format for the past two years. Before the pandemic, the event had grown from 67 guests the first year to more than 350 in 2020. Ketcham said Night to Shine has exceeded her expectations over the years. “Everything is done by donation, and I truly believe if this is something God wants to happen, He’ll provide the money for it,” she remarked. “And He always does.” She emphasized that Night to Shine organizers are still looking for volunteers as well as donations of items. “The more the merrier,” she said. “It’s a fun night for everyone.” For more information, and to register or to donate to Night to Shine, visit https://lcbcchurch.com /nighttoshine.

In 2014, the Tim Tebow Foundation began hosting Night to Shine, providing a prom night experience for people with special needs. At the time, Joell Ketcham’s son was graduating from high school. “He attended his school’s prom and the IU 13 prom, and I said to his aide, ‘We need to do something like this once people are out of school,’” Ketcham recalled. She reached out to the foundation and started the work to bring the program to Lancaster County. This year’s Night to Shine

A Shine-Thru Parade will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, followed by an at-home virtual experience on Friday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. The event is open to anyone with special needs age 14 and older. “This is completely free to participants,” Ketcham stated. “When they arrive at the parade, they’ll get a name tag to put on their vehicle, and they get a swag bag. After a Solanco pin had given the Mules (4-2) the lead at 15-12, Clay Gainer notched a pin at 138 followed by Reagan LeFevre’s pin and a major decision by Braden Edwards, who took the 152pound bout 17-6. The only Solanco points down the stretch was a hard-fought 7-5 double OT decision by Blaine Plastino over Hempfield junior Grant Hoover at 172. Meanwhile, Kamron Fickes pinned at 160, and Dylan Bard won by a 17-0 technical fall (189) before A.J. The Knights notched six pins in each of their first two matches, reaching the semifinals against Skyline. In that 40-31 victory, they came back from a 16-12 deficit thanks to a 22-8 major decision by LeFevre (145) and three consecutive pins - Edwards,

Hoover, and Bard. With the score 34-31 and coming down to the final bout, Mussmon (285) pinned in only 29 seconds. In all, the Knights registered 21 pins over four matches. They dominated Oscar Smith by a 64-6 score on Friday, won the quarterfinal over Grassfield 56-24 and took Saturday’s semifinal match over Skyline 40-31 before falling to Great Bridge in a 40-25 championship match. Williams finished with three pins and a technical fall over the weekend. Mussmon registered three pins, including one in just 29 seconds. BOYS’ BASKETBALL While fighting Cedar Crest for the top spot in the Section One standings, the Hempfield boys’ hoops team came back for a big win at Lebanon on Tuesday night, January 18. Coming off three quarters of trying to keep pace with the home team, the Knights found themselves down 37-29 heading into the fourth. They doubled up the Cedars 22-11 in the final period to take the game 51-48. Miguel Pena was the game’s leading scorer. The Hempfield junior scored 20 points, including four three-pointers.
