Bring on the bingo February is right around the corner, and the festivities of Christmas and New Year’s Day have been wrapped up for the season. Local schools are back in session, and working adults have made the post-holiday transition back to their standard routines. For the players on the girls’ lacrosse team at Hempfield High School, this time of the year signals it is time for two things: gearing up for the start of the season and busting out the bingo cards. After Harr y Beauchamp of Lititz graduated from Manheim Township High School in 2015, he decided to take a break from his academic career to explore new opportunities. He wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to pursue for a career, but he began working at Lancaster General Hospital as he considered different options during his gap year. Beauchamp’s job at the hospital entailed moving equipment and doing general housekeeping tasks. During his breaks, he started to watch episodes of a

television show that follows reallife first responders in New Orleans, and it sparked an interest in Beauchamp that would grow into a passion for firefighting. Today, Beauchamp is a volunteer firefighter at the Willow Street Fire Company, and he works full time as an emergency medical technician and firefighter in Parkesburg and Kennett Square. Beauchamp started his career by completing a training course offered through a partnership between Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and Firefighter and photographer Lancaster EMS. he Dayspring Christian Academy Remember America Speaker Series ha s i t s ro o t s in Days pr ing founder Mike Myers’ master’s degree studies when he first read about the Principle Approach. “I had never made such a connection to our founders and the principles that guided them in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution,” recalled Myers, who in response made “restoring the biblical foundation of America” part of the mission of Dayspring, which was founded in 1987. Dayspring Christian Academy will hold its 2024 Remember America Speaker Series event on Saturday, April 20, at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. This year’s speaker will be Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and

the event will begin at 6 p.m. A limited number of gallery seats are still available for those who wish to hear the speaker at 7 p.m. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that the biblical mandate for education is “part of the fabric of who we are.” “We believe God gave parents the authority to educate their children, and they partner with us,” he said, citing Psalm 78, Deuteronomy 6, and Ephesians 6, where God gives the command to teach children about Him. “The whole purpose of the passages is to teach their children so they can remember what the Lord has done,” Stone said. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker explained that Dayspring is modeled after the education system in place at the country’s founding era. “That is the distinction of Principle Approach schools,” Myers explained. “Every subject is based on biblical truth that God spoke into existence.”

while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation. The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old or are young 6-year-olds at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program and the Really Great Reading phonics program are introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation for beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten. The preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what students learn in the classroom. In all programs, the seeds of scholarship are sown in every academic subject to inspire a love of learning and appreciation for God’s hand in all the children do. the winner will receive one half, while the other half will benefit the lacrosse team. Food and drinks will be available to purchase in the cafeteria. The booster club has organized the annual bingo event for several years, but it introduced a new theme in 2023 that primarily features designer handbags and gift cards as prizes. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the girls’ lacrosse team, and the players are always actively involved in setting it up. The girls traditionally assist the booster club with various aspects of the fundraiser, such as selling tickets and spreading the word. “I think its important for girls to have a hand in raising money to benefit the team,” said Lisa Rodenberger, who is the parent of a player on the team and a member of the booster club. “The girls are always eager to be a part of it, and it’s a fun day for everyone involved.” The proceeds from the event will assist the team with the costs of offseason

training, new equipment and team bonding activities. As the start of the season quickly approaches, team members are preparing themselves with regular strength and conditioning training, as well as competing in games through a winter league on Sundays. “There is a heavy team aspect, even off the field. (The bingo fundraiser) helps the girls build leadership skills, and it brings the larger community into the school,” Rodenberger said. “The proceeds help to take a lot of financial pressure off of the players and their parents as well.” To purchase a ticket for bingo, visit http://tinyurl. com/hhsdesignerbingo24.

Firefighter from pg 1 Beauchamp studied human a n a t o my a n d m e d i c a l science. Once the classes were completed, he trained in the field to learn about patient assessment and other skills necessary to respond to an ambulance call. Beauchamp worked in Lancaster for two years before finding work in Chester County, where most emergencies are handled by first responders who serve as both EMTs and firefighters. “I never had any doubts about becoming a first responder,” Beauchamp said. “You don’t necessarily meet people on their best days in this job, but connecting with them and being able to help in

their time of need is really fulfilling.” Beauchamp’s passion for his field isn’t limited to fighting fires and responding to emergencies. Beauchamp frequently takes pictures of fire stations and their trucks, a hobby that he acquired shortly after becoming a firefighter himself. Beauchamp’s job as an EMT often took him near Conestoga Fire Company, and he liked to capture shots of the fire trucks when they left the station. In 2020, Beauchamp upgraded his camera and officially created a Facebook page for his pictures. Since then, he has traveled to Mountville, Millersville and numerous other towns

loved being able to connect with others in the field and see how different stations are run,” Beauchamp said. To c h e c k o u t B e a u champ’s work, search for “Harry Beauchamp Fire Photography ” on Facebook or @harr yjb26 on Instagram.

For five years, Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, brightened the drear y winter months with art from its private collection, featuring love themed works in February in a gallery staple exhibit, “Art In Love.” The show paused after 2020, as the gallery worked to navigate art in the public space during a pandemic. This winter, Mulberry Art Studios will bring the exhibition back, and it will

feature works from the private collection of April M. Koppenhaver, owner and founder of Mulberry Art Studios. “Art in Love, Again” will open with a First Friday reception on Feb. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. and will be on display throughout the month of February. For more information and to preview the work of “Art in Love, Again,” visit the gallery’s Instagram and Facebook pages.

The Lancaster County Office of Aging has posted tips to help prevent falls during the winter months. People are advised to wear shoes with good traction. T hey should also dress warmly to keep their muscles relaxed, as tense muscles can adversely affect balance. Technique is important when getting out of a vehicle. People should begin by planting both feet firmly on the ground and then steadying themselves on the door frame until they have gotten their balance.

Quality

The Office of Aging advises people to avoid s h o r tc u t s a nd s t ay o n cleared sidewalks and paths even though it may take longer. Grassy areas and slopes can be slippery like snowy steps. People should take extra time and avoid rushing. They should take short steps with their toes pointed slightly outward to maintain a stable support base. They should pay attention to the surfaces ahead of them and look down with their eyes only, as moving the head downward may shift a person’s balance.

Remember America from pg 1

Myers added that during the Colonial and founding periods of the nation, children were educated based on the prevailing biblical understanding of life. “ The children learned to read from the Bible,” he stated, pointing out that the first Great Awakening had occurred, and there was a sensitivity to the things of God and the impact of Christianity on the world. Myers also felt called to share this truth with the community outside the school. “There are things about our history that no one seems to know anymore,” he noted. “If we lose those biblical truths, we lose our nation.” Myers began holding study groups focused on primary documents. In 1992, he met with WDAC representatives and the Remember America one-minute broadcast presentations, which continue today, were born. “The whole idea of Remember America radio was to introduce issues we’re facing today and then to look back at our founding generation to see how they would have addressed those things and show that they had a biblical worldview,” said Myers, who in 1999 published “It’s Time to Remember, Amer ica” with Horizon Books in Camp Hill. Becker recalled that in 2009, school representatives began researching the idea of holding a lecture series. “We started to meet with people in

the community about bringing speakers in,” she reported, noting that the first course on the American Constitution attracted nearly 150 participants. Dayspring then connected with Wa l l B u i l d e r s . “ T h e y are well recognized for having an understanding of the founding documents of our nation,” said Becker, who added that speaker Rick Green f ille d the Day s pr ing auditorium with more than 400 people when he visited to speak in February of 2011. “That was the first Remember America Speaker Series,” she said. “It was another step to connect with the community and share this education. In April of 2011, Michael Reagan became the first series event speaker to appear at the Lancaster County Convention Center. A number of speakers, including Ben Carson and Eric Metaxas, have been part of the series since then. Tickets are available by calling the school at 717285-2000, ext. 205.
