Girls’ Lacrosse Team To Host Fundraiser BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Children who are 5 years old before Sept. 1 are eligible to begin school in the 2022-23 academic year. Kindergarten registration is currently open.

Are You Ready For Kindergarten? hange. This word, for some people, carries a negative connotation. For others, change is something positive. In most cases, change is inevitable. For instance, babies grow into toddlers, they go off to school, and they become more immersed in the journey called life. The transition from being at home 24/7 to attending school can be challenging for kids, which is why Hempfield School District (HSD) wants to help parents prepare their children for kindergarten since registration for the 2022-23 academic year is currently open. Kindergarten readiness is a list of skills kids are encouraged to have before entering kindergarten. The list is broken down into the following categories: emotional,

Landisville Primary Center, or Mountville Elementary School. While parents attend an informational meeting and ask questions, the future kindergartners spend time with teachers of special subjects, such as art, music, physical education, and library, so they can get acquainted and complete activities together. After the kids rejoin their parents, the event culminates in a school bus ride. “If parents are looking for something to do with their kids and they’re looking for information as well, Preschool Connections Club is a good resource for them,” stated Kramer. Each elementary school in the school district hosts Preschool Connections Club meetings once a month during the academic year. A schedule can be found at www.hempfieldsd.org/domain/324.

social, fine motor, self-care, behavioral, language and communication, pre-reading and literacy, and math. This list gives parents the opportunity to work on these areas at home to provide their children with foundational skills and a head start for kindergarten. “If they come in and they have some of those skills already, then they can focus more on those new things and they’re not struggling with academics,” explained Centerville Elementary School principal Tom Kramer. HSD also has a Preschool Connections Club, which invites parents to bring their preschool-age children to the HSD school they will be attending, which would be either Centerville Elementary School, Rohrerstown Elementary School, East Petersburg Elementary School, Farmdale Elementary School,

After completing the kindergarten enrollment process, parents are invited to participate in Kindergarten Orientation Night at the school building designated in their attendance area. Dates and times are posted on the HSD website at www.hempfieldsd.org/Page/881. Children who are 5 years old before Sept. 1 are eligible to begin school in the 2022-23 academic year. Kindergarten sessions run in half-day sessions, so children attend school either in the morning from 9 to 11:45 a.m. or in the afternoon from 12:45 to 3:30 p.m. “I encourage the parents to stay connected, get on social media, and stay informed,” stated Kramer. “People can join the email list for their own school to stay up to date on what’s happening.” For more information, visit www.hempfieldsd.org.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Village Movement, National Village Day will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Villages are intentional caring communities of neighbors helping neighbors. Each village reflects the community it serves and responds to the needs of its members. As part of National Village Day, villages around the country and abroad have planned events and programs to celebrate and highlight their role in creating communities of support for older adults.

Lancaster Downtowners, founded in 2008, will recognize the milestone with a free webinar via Zoom on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Founder Rod Houser, in conversation with Melissa Ressler, current executive director, and special guests, will explore the history of the Lancaster Downtowners in the context of the Village Movement. “We’ve been practicing our bingo announcing voices,” commented senior Kelsea Dague. “What I love about this sport is getting to be a part of the team and getting to know everyone from freshman to senior year. It really is like a family.” All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the girls’ lacrosse program to pay for uniforms, team bonding exercises, offseason training, turf rental, and more. The team’s first game is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, against Wilson High School. “ We have a really great team this year,” stated head coach Claudia Ovchinnikoff. “ We have some girls that have stepped up (and) improved immensely from last year, and we have 14 seniors in the program, so they will serve as good examples for the underclassmen to see how hard they’re working and what it takes to have a successful season.” Tickets for the bingo fundraiser can be purchased in advance at a discounted

Come Dance The Night Away Looking for a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart? Look no further than the Sweethearts Ball. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The festivities, which will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction, will benefit We Help Children, a Christian nonprofit created by Drew and Cindy Metcalf. “Drew and Cindy served in Guatemala for 10 years, and the primary focus of their ministry was to work with children in orphanages,” said Gabe Martin, a board member of We Help Children and the organizer of the Sweethearts Ball. “During the pandemic, they were called back home, and they partnered with an organization called The Haft to continue their mission.” We Help Children now operates a restoration farm in Bradford County, where people come for hope and healing. The organization also continues to train people on five continents throughout the world. The Sweethearts Ball will feature dinner catered by Mission BBQ , with a menu including pulled pork and

chicken, sliced brisket, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, green beans, rolls and cornbread. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. After dinner, guests will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor. “We have a wonderful dance instructor, Rebecca Gentry from City Ballroom, and she will teach a few dance moves for those who aren’t particularly skilled at dancing,” Martin said. “It’s a nice way to break the ice and get everyone out on the dance floor.” The evening will also include a silent auction of items such as gift cards and gift baskets, with proceeds benefiting the programs of We Help Children. The organization has held three charity balls in the past, but always at Christmastime, Martin said. “This year, we decided to switch to Valentine’s Day because we’ve found that people would like to attend in December, but the Christmas season is just too busy for a lot of people,” he said. “This gives people the option for something fun to do in February.” Hosting the event around Valentine’s Day adds another layer of appeal, he noted. “If you want to treat your significant other to a great Valen-

“February is often known as the month of love,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim. While many associate that love with flowers, candy or other Valentine’s Day gifts, there’s a bigger love at work at Mt. Hope, Wilson stated. “It’s a time of remembering Christ’s love for us and the call to love others as Christ first loved us. In turn, we emphasize the importance of looking out for our neighbors, but the jour-

ney of love doesn’t stop there.” February, she notes, is also the month during which Random Acts of Kindness Week is commemorated, offering an opportunity to bless others with expressions of love. That makes February the perfect month for Mt. Hope to hold a sweetheart to-go banquet, Wilson noted. The curbside pickup meal will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. Each meal will include barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll and butter and a dessert. Proceeds from the meal will support Mt. Hope, a 50-bed nonprofit nursing facility that provides care for seniors and disabled people regardless of their financial circumstances. Although Mt. Hope is often thought of as a senior residence, the facility cares for anyone in need, Wilson said, sharing the story of 48-yearold Chris Dickson. Dickson became ill in the spring of 2020, eventually receiving a diagnosis of a large tumor on his cervical spine. The tumor was a rare form of cancer of the central nervous system. After Dickson received 14 months of hospital care and hospice services, doctors suggested that Dickson move into a skilled nursing home

for end-of-life care. Wilson recalled Dickson’s mother worrying about how to pay for his care and considering trying to care for him herself before contacting Mt. Hope. Dickson moved into Mt. Hope in May of 2021 and passed away peacefully on Oct. 19. Participating in the sweetheart to-go banquet will help Mt. Hope continue to provide care for residents like Dickson. “It’s the heartfelt gifts that keep Mt. Hope going and able to provide a wonderful place for people to call home,” Wilson stated. “Mt. Hope continues to step in and say, yes, when other doors close for

people with situations like Chris Dickson’s story.” Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717-6828026 or email advancement @mthopenazarene.org by Saturday, Feb. 19. Extra meals will be available on-site while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may leave payment in a drop-box in the form of exact change or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.” The cost of the meal is $17.

Giant’s “Feeding School Kids” Initiative Returns The Giant Company recently announced the return of its “Feeding School Kids” initiative. Now through Monday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their Choice points into a donation for their local public schools’ food programs. Giant launched the initiative last year to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout

local public school districts in the communities it serves. Together with its customers, the company raised more than $3.3 million in 2021. This year, the Giant Company will donate $250,000 to the program. Through the “Feeding School Kids” initiative, school districts have been able to use the funds to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs, creating on-campus

food pantries and supplying extra weekend meals. For example, the School District of Lancaster scaled up its community garden initiative by implementing additional programming and providing fresh produce for more students and families. For more information on the “Feeding School Kids” initiative, visit www.giantfoodstores.com, choose “Community” in the menu on the top left, and select “Changing Children’s Lives.”

Pena put up 16 points and Ben Troyer added 13. Parker Wolfe chipped in with nine. Hempfield improved to 9-2 on Friday night, topping Cedar Crest 61-44 as Pena (12), Hester (11), Troyer (11) and Cole Overbaugh (10) reached double digits in scoring.

BOWLING Sometimes you hear the footsteps of your competitor gaining on you. Last Wednesday, Feb. 2, the Knights took care of that in Section One bowling by topping Township 7-0 at Dutch Lanes. Hempfield improved to 65-19 while Penn Manor (5819) kept pace. The previous week, the Knights had bowled a crucial 5-2 victory over Manor. Against Township, Xander Green led Hempfield by compiling 644 points. Derick Keller bowled a 637 in his three games. Mitchell Barnes had a high of 233 in his third game and hit the 600-point mark. With its beautiful cities, rich culture, incredible history, fascinating museums, and spectacular food, Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. After spending the first eight years of his life in Rome and serving as a chaplain at the Casa Materna orphanage in Naples for about four years after completing seminary, Robert “Bob” Bronkema realized how valuable it is to visit the country. Before becoming a pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg in 2011, Bronkema was the senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, Fla., from 1998 to 2006, and then moved to Russia, where he was the pastor at the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy. At each church he has served, Bronkema has planned mission trips for high school students to travel to Naples. 2022 marks Bronkema’s eighth time leading a mission trip to Naples and third time planning a trip with the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. Nine youths, along with Bronkema, will leave on Wednesday, June 15, and return on Saturday, June 25. While abroad, the group will conduct a Bible school for the children of Imparare Giocondo, which is run by executive director Rosaria Vincenzi. Bronkema connected with Vincenzi during his time at the Casa Materna, where Vincenzi served as a secretary and then as a director. The youths will divide into four designated groups to teach Bible stories, recreation, crafts, and music to the children. Bronkema noted that they are expect-

ing to serve anywhere from 60 to 100 kids. To help fund the trip, the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg will host a benefit auction on Saturday, Feb. 19, in the church’s fellowship hall, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the auction will begin at 6:15 p.m., with Don Welk Sr. serving as the auctioneer. “I feel like the auction will be a big community moment because everyone is invited to attend, even those who don’t go to church here,” stated Alicia Eltman, Gap resident and social worker at the church. Eltman will serve as a chaperone on the mission trip. Almost all of the items that will be auctioned off have been

donated from church members, and 100% of the proceeds will go toward the mission trip. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on a 2009 Cadillac STS in burgundy with 62,000 miles; a road trip to a Penn State football game with lodging and food; an NFL football autographed by Los Angeles Chargers offensive lineman Matt Feiler, a Lampeter-Strasburg alumnus; a one-week stay at a two-bedroom oceanfront condo in Bethany Beach, Del.; and more. Those interested in donating an item for the auction can contact Bronkema at 717-799-0777. Most of the individuals who will go on the mission trip have never left the country. Lauren Thurber and Danny Miller are among them.

“I’m looking forward to working with kids and get a better understanding of Italian culture,” said Thurber, a Hempfield-area resident and junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School. “I’m excited to see how different the culture is,” commented Miller, a West Grove resident and the youth director at the church. Those interested in participating in the 2026 mission trip can contact Bronkema at the aforementioned phone number. At the time of the trip, participants must be a high school student in Lancaster County. Library Friends Plan Book Sale

R079869

The Friends of Lancaster Public Library will hold their Winter ReSort Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13. The event will take place at the Book ReSort Center, 225 N. Marshall St., Lancaster. The sale will offer more than 20,000 books, both fiction and nonfiction. Some items will be individually priced. Vinyl records, DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks will also be for sale, as well as a variety of puzzles and board games. On Feb. 13, items will be halfprice.

Face masks that cover the nose and mouth are required inside the Book ReSort regardless of vaccination status. Shoppers must enter the sale via the Book ReSort’s side door, accessible from Fulton Street. To allow for social distancing inside the building, there will be fewer tables set up. Volunteers will continuously restock the tables from the large inventory of donated items. The Marshall Street Bookstore will also be open during the sale. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit Lancaster Public Library. On-site free

parking is available, and credit cards are welcome. The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library hold several book sales each year that raise a total of nearly $200,000 for the library. Additionally, the Friends have two bookstores that are open year-round: the Marshall Street Bookstore, located at 225 N. Marshall St., which is also the location for donation processing, and the Juliana Bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lancaster City Branch. For more information about the bookstores and book sales, visit www.Lancaster PublicLibrary.org/library -friends.

put it aside for years, but when she was laid off from her job in 2019, she revisited the subject. She went to visit Brian’s family and realized the book could focus on her entire relationship with Brian, not just the transplant. “I came home, and I had a fire in my soul to finish the book,” she stated. “I felt like my cousin was guiding me from heaven.” She finished the book and shopped around for a publisher before landing on TouchPoint Press. “They have a faith imprint, and faith plays a big part in this book,” she said. “It was a cathartic experience to write this book. I hope people will take away from this book that it’s good to be a living donor. It changes lives in so many ways.” Tina will discuss “Second Chance” on the “A Book and a Chat” podcast on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. A trailer about the book can be viewed on YouTube by searching for “Second Chance: A Kidney Between Us Book Trailer,” and the book is available for purchase on Amazon or at www.touchpointpress.com.

Williams of Lancaster Conservancy will discuss the Volunteer Land Steward program that he directs, including lessons learned and a few invasive plant management methods that have worked well with volunteers. He will also share examples of why this work is so critically important. Land protection is essential for biodiversity conservation, water quality protection, and climate resilience. Most land trusts operate on a shoestring budget with few staff members, and volunteers fill the gap by performing land protection and stewardship services. A few years later, she learned that Brian was dying. “He was on dialysis, and he needed a kidney,” Tina said. “His (immediate) family members weren’t matches.” However, it turned out that Tina was a 99.9% match. Although Brian’s condition was heartbreaking, Tina felt her prayers had been answered and knew that donating her kidney would be yet another step on her mental health journey to wellness. “I was finally able to help him heal, like I had wanted to do years before,” she said. “I begged him to let me donate my kidney.” The surgery was performed at Ohio State University in April of 2002. The transplant was a success, and Brian was able to achieve two of his goals: seeing his son graduate from high school and spending more time with his family. Nine years after the transplant, Brian passed away from diabetic complications unrelated to the donated kidney. Soon after the transplant, Tina began writing the book. She only finished about 40 pages before deciding she didn’t have enough material. She

This is the story of two people. One wanted to die. The other wanted to live. Through an act of kindness, they both found a second chance. Tina Shyver-Plank has written a memoir about her experience donating a kidney to her first cousin, Brian Shyver. “Second Chance: A Kidney Between Us” was published in January,

but the story of the book dates back much further. Tina and Brian grew up together in Mountville. “He lived two doors away from me, and we were best buds,” recalled Tina, who now lives in Elizabethtown. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child, Brian once went into insulin shock in front of Tina, and the experience made an impression. “From that day forward, I vowed that if I could be a conduit for his healing, I would be,” she stated. After Brian’s family moved away when he was a teenager, the two kept in touch as best as they could, but Tina’s life took a turn. A history of abuse and a broken relationship led to depression that eventually propelled Tina to attempt suicide. She spent a month in the hospital and intensive therapy before she began to heal.

Mennonite Life will offer two workshops that explore the Pennsylvania German art of Fraktur. This type of art was created by Pennsylvania Germans during the 18th through the mid-19th centuries and features calligraphic text decorated with colorful birds, hearts, and flowers. The first workshop, Fanciful Fraktur Birds, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. Emily Smucker-Beidler will share information about birds prevalent in southeastern Pennsylvania, and participants will find connections through Fraktur images. They will also learn the origins of the polkadot, the checkerboard, and various striped patterns in Fraktur. Participants will receive tips for drawing original works in the Fraktur style and then adapt designs from historical works using light boards.
