Hempfield spellers advance to regional bee
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Two Hempfield School District students will participate in the WITF (PBS Channel 33) Central PA Grand Championship Spelling Bee.
Devonah Mahesh Nithya, a sixth-grader at Landisville Intermediate Center (LIC), and eighthgrader TJ Young of Centerville Middle School will compete on Saturday, March 15, at the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.
Devonah and TJ will take part in the bee alongside the top 33 spellers in the region, which encompasses Lancaster, Cumberland, York, and Lebanon counties.
The champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to Thursday, May 27 to 29.
Bethany Eaton, an instructional support teacher at LIC, coordinates the district’s spelling bees. “I am very thankful,” Eaton said. “I have coordinators in each
of our elementary buildings and our two middle schools who volunteer to run the bees in their buildings. We provide the students with lists that come from Scripps, then the buildings can decide how they want to run the bee. Some buildings do a written spelling bee, and some do an oral spelling bee like you might see on TV.”
Eaton said all of Hempfield’s buildings are large enough that each can send its top four finishers to the next level.
Landisville Intermediate Center holds an oral spelling bee to determine which students advance to the next round. Students interested in participating take part in a written bee for round one. According to Eaton, 235 of 475 LIC students competed in round one of the bee.
Eaton scores the tests, and between 24 and 27 spellers move on based on the cutoff score. They have a month to prepare for the oral bee. LIC’s bee

was held Nov. 25, 2024, in the school’s large group instruction room and livestreamed to classrooms and on YouTube for family members who could not attend in
person.
LIC’s spelling bee was a classic, lasting a school-record four hours and 15 minutes. The bee had to stop for lunch before concluding
15 minutes before it would have ended in a tie between Devonah and her friend Emma Sasso. “My jaw hurt a little bit after spelling so many words,” Devonah said.

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School hosted some of the area’s top high school musicians during the District 7 South Band Festival on Jan. 24 and 25.
Musicians and band directors representing 38 schools in Lancaster, York, and Adams counties participated in the two-day festival, which culminated with a concert on Saturday afternoon,
led by guest conductor Tonya Mitchell-Spradlin, a director of wind band studies and assistant professor of music at Penn State University.
L-S band director Larry Royer, who has been teaching for 31 years, the last 22 also as band director, said the school has hosted the district orchestra in 2019 and all-state groups, but this is the first time it has hosted the District 7 South Band Festival.
That’s why Pam and her husband, Greg, are co-chairs of the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s annual gala.
Schreiber’s 41st annual gala is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. The theme is “Havana Nights,” so there will be a Cuban influence, including some Cuban ideas infused into the food.
Local organizations purchase sponsorships, which is a main source of revenue. Schreiber’s Hero sponsors are Faulkner, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Highmark/PennState Health, and Miter Foundation. There will be silent and live auction items, including a seven-day trip to Africa. A DJ will supply music.

Tuition discount available at Drexel
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has announced a new feature of its relationship with Drexel University. Graduates of Thaddeus Stevens College are eligible for the Drexel Promise, which provides students who have earned an associate degree with a renewable scholarship for 50% decreased tuition as they pursue a bachelor’s degree at Drexel.
Some graduates from Thaddeus Stevens College pursue additional higher education within five years of graduating, and the college maintains several articulation agreements with other institutions to facilitate smooth transitions into additional learning opportunities. The college’s articulation agreement with Drexel was first announced in 2021 and seeks to enable students with an associate degree in computer and network
systems administration or business administration to seamlessly pursue a related program at Drexel. The Drexel Promise tuition discount is available to graduates holding two-year degrees from an accredited community college. With this program, Drexel works to reduce financial barriers and their resulting inequities for students. First offered to students in specific regions, the program was recently expanded to apply to students nationwide. Those receiving the discount can still receive other state or federal funding assistance. Applicants to a full-time, on-campus program should indicate their associate degree; no additional forms or applications are required. Criteria for admission at Drexel must be met. Full-time enrollment and a minimum grade point average of 2.0 must be maintained to receive the discount.

Spelling bee
Emma won the building title for the second time, having also prevailed as a fourth-grader while Devonah won last year.
Both Emma and Devonah advanced to the next round, an online test students needed to take between Jan. 16 and 20. “It felt good,” said Devonah. “That’s what I was aiming for.”
The online test was for both spelling and vocabulary, and the top 35 of the 200 participants moved on to the Central PA Spelling Bee. Devonah, who also enjoys reading, said she spent between 30 minutes and an hour per day with her mother, Nithya Mahesh, and father, Mahesh Mariadoss, preparing for the bee and plans on studying even more for the next round.
TJ won the Centerville Middle School oral bee on Dec. 3, 2024. When he headed to school, he had no idea the bee was going to be held that day. “It was a little stressful,” said TJ. “I didn’t do much studying until the day of because I didn’t know it was that day. … I thought it was on Dec. 11. I just studied the words at lunch, and that was the page they mostly used.”
Despite the short notice, TJ noted the school bee was not that difficult. “Here it was pretty easy,” he said. “I knew most of the words they were asking me, so I didn’t have any struggles. I had seen other
people struggle with words I wouldn’t have struggled with. It was pretty easy to sum it up.”
TJ studied between 20 to 30 minutes per day with parents Jo and Steve to prepare for the next round. “I knew I needed to study a lot because I was spelling difficult words,” said TJ.
The online test was tougher than he had envi sioned. “I was decently con fident, and then I realized I should not have been that confident,” said TJ. “It was a very hard test. It was 50 questions, and I got a 39, so it was decently hard.”

He knows he needs to ramp up studying for the Central PA Spelling Bee. “I have time, and I’m going to take my time, look through the words, and memorize them because I would like to get past the regional round.”

Snow Angels wield shovels of mercy
BY JEFF FALK
It has absolutely nothing to do with people lying on their backs in the snow and moving their arms and legs to create impromptu winter weather art. It’s more closely related to kindred spirits performing heavenly work here on Earth. These are different kinds of Snow Angels.
“Before we had a formal name, the people who we were helping named us,” said Jennifer Jarvis, one of the founding members of the Lancaster Snow Angels. “They said to us, ‘You’re angels. We’re so thankful.’”
The Snow Angels are an independent, community-oriented group of concerned citizens who travel around the Lancaster countryside shoveling and removing snow from the sidewalks, walkways and driveways of the elderly, the disabled and veterans - neighbors who can’t remove snow on their own. It began as a grassroots movement in local neighborhoods, but the altruistic concept has gained traction and has now spread to nearly every corner of the county.
“Our veterans and elderly shouldn’t have to deal with stress,” said Jarvis. “They have doctor’s appointments, and they have directcare nurses coming to their homes. If they don’t have families, or

don’t have families who live nearby, who’s going to help them?”
That’s where Lancaster Snow Angels come in. Persons in need of snow removal reach out to the Angels through phone calls, email and social media. The response may not be immediate, but no call for help ever goes unanswered.
“It’s mostly individuals who can’t afford private snow removal,” said Jarvis, a resident of Terre Hill. “We’re a faith-based organization. We take everyone at their word. We haven’t really been taken advantage of at this point.”
From modest origins during the pandemic, the Lancaster Snow Angels have grown in number to about 43 shovelers and snow removers - 35 adults and eight junior volunteers. The volunteers work together in teams or crews.
“Most of us are doing it around full-time jobs,” said Jarvis. “Sometimes we call off, and our bosses know what we’re doing. We’re working around obligations. We have everyone prioritized.”
“Shoveling snow is very taxing on your shoulders, arms and back,” Jarvis continued. “The first day after a storm, you’re no good to anyone. There’s a recovery period needed. We’re going two or three days beyond the storm.”
Depending upon the severity of the storm and the amount of snow that has fallen, the Lancaster Snow Angels respond to 130 to 200 requests for help. The Snow Angels’ cov -

erage area currently encompasses the communities of Lititz, Ephrata, New Holland, Columbia, Denver, Strasburg, Paradise, Willow Street, Elizabethtown and portions of the city.
“It is a big county,” said Jarvis. “That’s why it gets so hard sometimes. We’re talking about 10 to 30 addresses per town, or on one Angel’s list. We’re pretty much covering every town in the county. Wherever there’s a need, we fill it. Sometimes it takes three or four days to clear a substantial snow. But we get it done.”
“We’ve gained a lot of unofficial grandparents who have become parts of our (extended) families,” she added. “They don’t have anyone else, so we become parts of their families. Some of these people are
suffering from loneliness.”
In January of 2020, Jarvis; her husband, Fernando Rosado Jr.; and co-founder Mike Schmelder identified a need for helping their neighbors with snow removal. Through social media, word of mouth and some other very organic sources, the movement has grown steadily.
“Volunteers have come to us through multiple channels, and I’m grateful for that,” said Jarvis. “They are strangers who have become family. We’ve experienced a lot of growth client-wise and volunteer-wise. There’s a great need. It brings the communities together.”

“It’s always a good thing to do,” said Royer, a 1990 Lampeter-Strasburg graduate. “It lets people see what we have and see our facilities, what we offer and how we support music.”
School band directors held a business meeting during the Friday of the festival and judged auditions of the 154 band members who were vying to move to the next level. The state is divided into 12 districts and then six regions.
Band rehearsal was held Friday afternoon and again Saturday morning leading up to the concert.
Royer said the musicians first auditioned for the festival back in December. “They learn and perform some pretty high-level repertoire to get into this group,” Royer said. “Then to move into the next group, they audition on material from this concert.”
The Lampeter-Strasburg High School musicians who qualified for the festival were Maya Coon, bass clarinet; Katerina Geiter, clarinet; Rosalie Glick, horn; Isabel Henry, oboe; Sophia Leister, flute; Elizabeth Rhinier, tuba; Alex Ruhl, trumpet; Katie Sanborn, flute; and Cole Shehan, trumpet.
“I think it’s great to be exposed to this,” Royer said. “It’s not too much about the competition for me. It’s seeing other kids do what they do, and they come together and make a product is really outstanding. To be exposed to that and hopefully bring some of that back here to our program is always really good.”
Hempfield High School was represented by Ella Astree, bassoon; Amalia Gelbart, oboe; Carter Guengerich, percussion; Noelle Hooper, flute; Spencer Stein, baritone;
Lii Stephens, horn; Colin Towbridge, bari sax; Jude Valle, tuba; and Sophia Wilson, oboe.
“I think there are two things about the experience that are really cool,” Hempfield band director Matt Ceresini said. “The first thing is the kids really enjoy meeting the other kids. And often kids who make this as a freshman or sophomore will make the festival multiple years, so they get to reconnect with those kids, but infrequently. It’s a cool way to check in on what is going on other places. And the other thing is, musically, the groups are always outstanding. It gives them a different level of musicianship. In our ensembles, they’re serving as leaders almost all the time. Here, everybody is of that level.”
The experience gained by band members at the festival improves the quality of the entire band. “One of the things we say in our band is there are a lot of ways to be great,” said Ceresini. “One of the things we do, is when students come back, we
ask them to share something they learned that we don’t do that we could incorporate. It could be something the conductors do, something they pick up from other students. There are a lot of great ways to do things.”
Solanco High School was represented by sophomores Benjamin Ginter, clarinet, and Mackenzie Landis, flute.
“They are both so accomplished even though they’re so young,” Solanco band director Scott Weyman said. “They’ve made it to the district PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) level, and then they got the opportunity to reaudition for a chance to go to regionals, on the way to all-states potentially. So for them, it’s a big step in their development. It’s a very competitive process. Even making it to the district ensemble is quite a feather in your cap. The future looks really bright for them.”
Penn Manor High School musicians Jordan Chen, flute; Myra Musser, flute; and Sandra Walker, horn, also participated in the festival.

A highlight of the gala is the unveiling of the yearly Schreiber Ambassadors, who share their stories of perseverance.
to for speech, physical and occupational therapy, and that’s what helped him to be able to go to college and be independent,” said Pam. “That’s why my husband and I have an affiliation with them, to give back to an organization that gave to us for so many years.”
“And we have a ton of friends who support us in this mission, some on the board and committee.”

Visit https://schreiber pediatric.org for more information or to purchase tickets to the gala. Tickets may be purchased until Friday, Feb. 14, or until they are sold out. Donations may be made up to March 10.
Pam and Greg, the latter of whom has been a board member for eight years, are in their third year as gala co-chairs. Their older son, Alex, went to Schreiber for 18 years. “That’s one of the reasons we’re involved,” Pam said.
The Oleksas feel companionship with other families that have the same need. “That’s now our goal as parents, to give back to other families, so they, too, can have the same opportunities with their child to be an independent person in the community, living independently,” Pam said.
The gala is a major fundraiser for Schreiber. “The reason that we do the gala every year is we’re trying to make up for the $2.5 million deficit for services that are provided to the 2,000 children who receive services every year,” Pam said. “Our goal is to provide services to as many children as possible, even if they don’t have any ability to pay, their parents don’t have the ability to pay. We still want to provide care to those children.”
“The generosity of our community been amazing the last two years my husband and I have chaired.” Pam says the committee is hoping to have 400 individuals attend the event.
“Our gala has continued to grow,” said Pam. “We were at a smaller venue two years ago. Last year, we were at the Imperial for our 40th. We needed to find a larger venue. It’s just been very positive, the growth.”

“It’s our family mission to support this wonderful organization,” Pam said.
“We have such an outpouring of support from the community,” said Pam.
Pam also credits the Schreiber fund development team consisting of Danielle Sunday and Kristen Masengard. “There is a team of committee members who play a huge role in gathering sponsorships, silent auction items, and live auction items, which are the things that make our event a success,” Pam said. “The big thing is we’re so fortunate our local community supports the needs of the local children. Every year, it’s heartwarming for me to see that outpouring of support.”
Welcome Center temporarily relocates
The Lancaster City Welcome Center, located at 38 Penn Square, temporarily closed to the public on Jan. 15 as renovations began. Construction is expected to take 12 to 15 months. During this time, Welcome Center staff members will assist visitors from a temporary
kiosk in the lobby of the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, located at 25 S. Queen St.
The renovations will modernize the Welcome Center, addressing water damage, improving energy efficiency, enhancing accessibility with upgraded entrances, and adding new
public restroom facilities. These improvements are also intended to provide a better working environment for the staff.
The Welcome Center is housed in Old City Hall, a historic building constructed in the late 1700s that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
