Local cyclist will ride for cancer research BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
John Riddell of Quarryville is a veteran bicyclist. Riddell has completed a number of long-distance rides, and some of them have taken him across entire states. This summer, Riddell plans to bike from
New York City to Niagara Falls, but this time, he is motivated by more than just his love for cycling. In July, Riddell will participate in the 10th annual Empire State Ride. The goal of the ride is to raise money for cancer research; the funds raised by riders will See Bike ride pg 3

H
empfield High School (HHS), 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, will present “Fiddler on the Roof ” as its spring musical for 2024. Shows will be held in the school’s p e r fo r m i n g a r t s ce n te r o n Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. A senior citizen preview night will take place on Thursday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. The preview night is open to those age 65 and older, and it is sponsored by the Hempfield Foundation. No tickets are required to attend the senior preview night. Tickets
for the weekend shows may be purchased at the box office 45 minutes before the start of each performance or online until two hours before the beginning of the shows. To purchase a ticket, visit www.hempfieldsd.org/Page/117. Cast and crew members began rehearsing for “Fiddler on the Roof ” in December, and they have continued to prepare for the show during daily practices. W hen deciding what show to present as this year’s spring musical, the theater department’s faculty members wanted to select a production that hadn’t been done in many years. The school also wanted to choose a show that would highlight the skills of its
students. “Fiddler on the Roof ” has not been performed at HHS in more than 30 years, and the structure of the show allows its cast members to showcase both their acting and singing abilities, making it the perfect candidate. “We felt like ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ was a good title people would know,” said Alejandro Ramos, director of the play. “There’s great music as well, but it requires some serious acting.” Although HHS last presented “Fiddler on the Roof” as its spring musical in 1987, the show was held in Hackman Auditorium, which ser ved as the school’s stage for theater productions and musical performances. The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College will present “Green Practices in Historical Clothing” on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 4:30 p.m. The museum is located in Steinman College Center, 628 College Ave., Lancaster. Karin J. Bohleke, director of the Fashion Archives and Museum of Shippensburg University, will speak about fashion’s environmental and social impact, which ranks it as one of the planet’s biggest polluters and contributors to poverty through sweat-shop labor. Awareness of these issues has made some consumers begin to rethink their wardrobe choices and consider how they can make positive changes on a personal level. To find inspiration, people can look to the home seamstresses, professional dressmakers, and tailors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who were masters of “green” wardrobe management. Many actors have attended services at local Jewish synagogues to learn about Jewish faith and culture. “One of the biggest benefits of the show is exposing our students to diversity and a culture they may not be familiar with,” Ramos said. “It’s important for them to understand a story that isn’t their own.”

Before Riddell worked in Mountville, he worked at Black Rock Retreat Center in Quarryville. Riddell worked at Black Rock Retreat Center for 26 years, during which time he became close friends with his co-worker Nancy Engel. Engel battled lung cancer for nearly eight years before passing away in July 2023. In addition to cycling in honor of Engel’s memory,
Riddell has dedicated his ride to his sister-in-law Lisa Gregory, his friend Matt Bland and his next-door neighbor Bob Kauffman, each of whom has survived a battle with cancer. The Empire State Ride will be the longest ride Riddell has ever attempted, and he is training every day to increase his endurance and muscle strength in preparation. The route is more than 500 miles in length, and bikers will ride for roughly 80 miles each day. “It’s a big commitment, but to be honest I’m going to enjoy it,”
Riddell said. “Biking helps clear your mind, but it’s also a time for me to talk with the Lord. Often, He challenges me about things in my life.” To par ticipate in the Empire State Ride, individuals must raise a minimum of $3,500. Shortly after he decided to participate in the Empire State Ride, Riddell said he began to realize how many people in his life have been affected by cancer. Riddell then decided to participate in memory of his friends and family members who have lost their battles with the disease, as well as to honor those who have survived it. “It started out as something I just wanted to do. It’s a big challenge, and it sounds like an awesome ride,” Riddell said. “The more I got into it, it became more energizing for me to be a part of something that will help generations to come research a cure for cancer.” Riddell currently works as the director of finance for

Musical reprise Fred Hughes, who became the new director of the New Holland Band on Jan. 1, does not know exactly when his father joined the band, but he knows how it happened, and he remembers pulling the wagon that held the bass drum in parades when he was still in the single digits. “(Former New Holland Band director) Sam (Zimmerman) heard (that my father) was a great musician and recruited him,” said Hughes, who referred to Zimmerman as a “great mentor.” By the time Hughes was 12 years old, he was playing tuba alongside his father, having joined Local 294 of the American Federation of Musicians. Hughes experience in the band prepared him for a future in music. “It was through Sam’s foresight to start mentoring us young folk s v i a ge tting Russ Sumpman (a local music teacher) in the band,” recalled Hughes, who said Sumpman brou g ht his students along with him. “We had the opportunity to sit beside our teachers and pl ay in this g reat band playing great band literature,” said Hughes, who added that the band would practice on Tuesday nights and play two concer ts the following Sunday. “We would play different music at the second concert than we played at the first concert,
and none of it was what we rehearsed on Tuesday nig ht ,” he stated. “ We learned to sight-read.” That experience helped Hughes to be assigned as a tuba player in the First Army Band at Fort George G. Meade in Mar yland, a f te r g rad u at i n g f rom Hempfield High School. Hughes also played keyboard with the show band and big band of the First Army Band. In 1981, Hughes was sent to Korea, w h e re h e p l ay e d w i t h the Eighth Army Band in Seoul. He also played in jazz clubs there, recording six records before the age of 24. In 1985, following his stint in Seoul, he returned to Lancaster and worked with a jazz trio called Alternative, performing regularly at what was then the Treadway Resort Inn. In 1989, Hughes joined the Army ’s touring jazz ensemble, called the Jazz Ambassadors, as a pianist. He toured the U.S. and the world. In 1996, he formed the Fred Hughes Trio, and the group played international festivals. He has served in a variety of other roles, including directing orchestras and p re s e n t i n g wo r k s h o p s and clinics. In 2019, he fo u n d e d Ja z z A l i ve , a nonprofit organization working to preserve jazz through a variety of concerts and educational activities. “We have been going into Oxford School District under the New Holland Band educational
endowment,” said Hughes of the nonprofit. “ This will be the third year that we go in to work with beginning students.” T he effor t is par t of Hughes’ desire to introduce young people to specific types of music, something he also wants to see happen with the New Holland B and, as he ste p s i nto hi s ne w role. “For me that’s the top goal - to expand our audience,” he said. “There are different ways to do that one step at a time.” Hughes’ first appearance as director will be at the band ’s spr ing concer t , which will be held Sunday, March 17, in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, L ancaster. Hughes also noted that this year, the band will give two concerts for the July Fourth holiday. The first is planned at The Barn at Paradise Station on Wednesday, July 3, where the band will accompany the singing group Perfect Harmony, and the second is the traditional concert in the New Holland Memorial Park on Thursday, July 4. The band will also hold its annual Christmas concert at DoubleTree Resor t , 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. A new concert will be the “Art of the March,” which will be held

Students invited to enter art contest The Shapiro Administration invites all firstthrough sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about tick s , including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite. Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http:// tinyurl.com/T ickbor ne DiseaseArtContest24. Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at
the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR. Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease c a s e s i n t h e n at i o n . Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. W hen explor ing outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors. After being outside, people should check themselves and their children and pets thorou g hly for tick s and remove any that they find. Then, people should shower to help remove any ticks they may have missed. Clothes may be put in the dryer on high heat to help kill any ticks that might still be stuck to the clothes.
