All basketball, all the time
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn Jan. 5, Dayspring Christian Academy’s varsity girls’ basketball team faced off against New Covenant Christian School for Dayspring’s homecoming game at Lancaster Bible College. At halftime, assistant coach Krista Hurley started for the locker room as she hatched a plan to take the lead in the second half, but she was stopped by head coach Erick Aiken. Hurley, who graduated from Dayspring in 2005, assumed the interruption was due to the school’s annual tradition of recognizing alumni who attend the homecoming game. But Aiken, the team and Dayspring’s athletics department had something else in mind.
Anxious to return to the locker room and strategize with the team, Hurley followed Aiken and the players onto the court, where they formed a line beside a covered easel. Instead of
recognizing alumni in attendance at that time, assistant athletic director Eric Lee pulled the cover from the easel to reveal a framed jersey with the number 42, the same jersey Hurley wore when she was a player on Dayspring’s varsity girls’ basketball team. The school presented Hurley with the jersey, along with a card and gift from current team members, to honor her for serving as an assistant coach at Dayspring for 12 years, making her the longest-tenured coach in the athletics department. “I was speechless,” Hurley said. “It was such an honor, and I was grinning ear-to-ear.”
Hurley’s career as both an accomplished basketball player and coach began with a single game. When she was 2 years old, Hurley and her family returned to the U.S. on furlough while serving as missionaries in Thailand to visit extended family at Christmas. A Chicago Bulls game was playing on her grandmother’s TV, and young Hurley became

“It becomes about the experiences and getting to see the
campers’ growth,” said Becky Miller, a summer group leader for Aaron’s Acres. “It just kind of turns into being there and growing a sense of pride in yourself. The amount of love shown at these camps is amazing. That’s what keeps counselors coming back for as long as they can.”

Presenting “Anastasia”
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Monica DePaul, artistic director for Cavod Theatre, and other Cavod staff members considered musicals to perform, they did not realize immediately that “Anastasia” was a possibility. “We thought, ‚ÄòWouldn’t it be cool if we could do “Anastasia”?’” recalled DePaul. When Cavod production manager Bergen Sunday reported that the show would be released for production in late 2023, the group was thrilled. “The music is incredible,” said DePaul.
“Anastasia - The Musical,” will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The show will also be performed at 7

The show is based on the animated film released in 1997. It is a musical version of the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, played by Amanda Lewis as an adult and Violet Bartlett as a child. According to the story, Anastasia may have escaped and survived when her family was executed by revolutionaries in 1918. When young woman named Anya (Lewis) with amnesia seeks to discover her past, she is persuaded by two con artists - Dmitry, played by Ric Weaver, and Vlad Popov, played by Josh Glacken, who hope to benefit from Anya’s resemblance to Anastasia by passing her off as the Grand Duchess to her paternal grandmother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, played by Joy Schaeffer.

DePaul referred to the story as historical fiction.
“It has been proven Anastasia did not survive,” she noted, adding that she was intrigued by the show’s connection to history. “We tend to enjoy doing shows that are rooted in literature and history (because) the stories are so human and deep,” DePaul explained, adding that the message of hope in the show was also appealing. “(Audience members) find themselves on a journey and process and who she comes to be on the other side is inspiring,” she said. “I hope (attendees) leave with a sense of hope,” she said. “We need hope and magic.”
The more than 25 musical numbers in “Anastasia” include solos and showstoppers that put the entire cast of 30 on stage. DePaul said that standout songs include
DePaul said she has been challenged by the best ways to utilize all the cast members using only the Cavod stage. Set designers Shana Baloche and Dom Deriso have come to the rescue by designing and building platforms to accommodate the cast. “They have come up with this really cool idea of building arches we can go in and out of and use to create different places and time,” said DePaul, who added that the lead character will delve into her childhood memories as part of the plotline. DePaul praised members of the cast and crew, saying, “They are so creative and collaborative, and they are excited to do a show that is so newly available.”

entranced as she watched National Basketball Association All-Star Michael Jordan dominate the court. “I was so spellbound. (A few years later), I started saving up my money to buy a little Michael Jordan jersey,” Hurley said. “It just built from there; that’s really how the love of the game started.”
Although Hurley still keeps a poster of MJ on her wall, her dedication to basketball became much more than just admiration for a legendary player. During her career as a player, Hurley helped lead Dayspring’s varsity girls’ team to its first district playoff game in 2005. She continued to play formally and informally as she attended Hough -

ton College in New York, graduating from college in 2009. Hurley returned to Dayspring as an assistant coach for the 2012-13 season, when Dayspring reinstated its varsity girls’ basketball program, which had been placed on hiatus a few years prior. Joining her on the coaching staff were head coach Chuck Balmer and assistant coach Alison Schmucker.
Hurley credits basketball with teaching her life skills that continue to serve her well, whether she’s on the court or not. “It teaches you teamwork, how to handle correction and criticism and how to be open to learning so you can improve yourself,” Hurley said. “You learn how to work as a unit with

Concert to feature trumpet music
First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host a concert on First Friday, March 1, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.
Doug Albert will perform on four trumpets - B-Flat, E-Flat, piccolo, and flugelhorn. Selections will include “The Trumpet Shall Sound” from George Frederic Handel’s “Messiah,” along with Eric Ewazen’s “Prayer and Praise” and songs from childhood, including “Jesus Loves Me” and “Simple Gifts.” The concert will conclude with “Presto” from “Concerto in C Minor” by Johann Sebastian Bach and Alessandro Marcello; Albert will be accompanied at the piano by Larry Hershey.
Albert is a retired music teacher and department chair in Lampeter-Strasburg and Pequea Valley school districts. He is currently on the music faculty at Franklin & Marshall College as an adjunct professor of trumpet. He earned music degrees at
Millersville University and Duquesne University, and performs regularly with the brass quintet QuintEssentially Brass, the Lancaster British Brass Band and Allegro Orchestra.
Hershey, a Lancaster County native, has been organist and choirmaster at First Reformed Church for 33 years. A graduate of Pequea Valley High School and an honors graduate of Millersville University, he studied with Luke Grubb, Reginald Lunt, Dorothy
Beam, and Mary Vyner. As a member of the Lancaster Chapter, American Guild of Organists, Hershey has performed often with the Guild and the Summer Arts Concert Series of Lancaster. He has organized and performed over 30 First Friday concerts since 2019. He is retired from a 25-year career in restaurant management. Admission is free. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

counselors for its summer camp program. Specifically, Aaron’s Acres is looking for volunteer buddies age 13 and older, as well as counselors age 18 and up.
The nonprofit is hoping to add a total of 40 to 50 buddies and counselors for its summer camp, which will start its season in the middle of June.
“The best things these campers get is seeing (fellow campers) who are similar to themselves,” said Miller. “Individuals with disabilities do really well with routine, and they get to do all these activities. Just being in an environment that is accepting of their disabilities is important. They are put into an environment where they can do anything. When they come to camp, they feel at home.”
Aaron’s Acres conducts its summer camps at New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The summer camps are broken down into three 10-day sessions on Mondays through Fridays
from June 17 to 28, July 8 to 19 and July 22 to Aug. 2.
The camps feature daily activities such as swimming, crafts and fitness programs; off-site field trips; and therapies like music and equine.
“(The buddies and counselors are) mostly college students, but we also have kids who want to gain experience and people who have jobs with summers off,” said Miller. “If you’ve never gone into a summer camp program, it can be intimidating, but the amount of support that comes through the program is so comforting. It’s such a good learning experience and stepping stone. It’s such a good way to get a foot in the door. Just seeing how the world works through (the campers’) eyes is so rewarding.” Because it adheres to a strict policy of a one-to-one or one-to-two counselor-to-camper ratio, Aaron’s Acres’ summer camps are staff driven. Last summer, Aaron’s Acres turned away 100 families with disabled individuals who applied for
its summer camp programs because it lacked adequate numbers of staff members.
“We’re trying to give our campers an experience in a safe environment with the support they need,” said Miller. “The need is very great. We have so many families, and it’s not the same campers every year. Last year, we were nowhere close to having the staff to accommodate everyone on our list.”

Friends to display artwork at Ware Center
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host an exhibit of artworks by Millersville University (MU) alumnae Kerry Sacco and Ann Thomas in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit, “Connections and Pathways,” will open with a reception on Frist Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., during which visitors may meet the artists and view the collection.
In this exhibition, Sacco and Thomas interpret the complexity of nature and celebrate 40 years of
Student
friendship through connections and pathways to the landscape of their worlds.
Both artists graduated with art degrees from MU, but their initial path did not follow the painting route. Sacco pursued graduate studies in lithography at MU and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, she began to appreciate works by the Pennsylvania Impressionists, which led to further studies of oil painting. Her landscapes in the upcoming exhibition focus on well-known
Council from pg 1
students who exemplify its values.
In November, the Student Council created the Black Knight Award. Every month, members of the Student Council speak with teachers around the school to give them an opportunity to nominate a student for the award. Teachers are encouraged to recommend students who exhibit traits listed in the school’s PRIDE guidelines: perseverance, respect, involvement, discipline and excellence. Student Council advisers Zahid Virmani and Kate Hough then review the nominations and select two recipients from each grade. Students who are chosen for the Black Knight Award receive a testimony from the teacher who nominated them, a certificate and a $15 gift card for a local store or restaurant.
“We have a big building. You can get lost in the shuffle,” Virmani said. “The Black Knight Award is a way we can encourage students to exemplify our school’s values by helping other kids and creating a positive environment.”
Student Council president and HHS senior Avery Landis said one of the club’s main goals is to foster school pride, something many students
local subjects, and the artworks are notable for their composition, color, and brushwork.
Upon graduating from MU, Thomas focused on architecture, interior design, and other entrepreneurial pursuits. A decade ago, after raising two daughters, she embraced the one medium that had
eluded her: oil painting. Primarily self-taught, she creates landscapes that explore the beauty that surrounds her home in Hunterdon County, N.J., and in Bucks County.
The exhibition will be on view through Friday, March 29. The gallery is open daily. For more information, call 717-871-7814.
feel could be improved due to the school’s size. “We’re trying to be more of a community,” Landis added. “We want to make this big school feel a little smaller by making everyone feel seen. No one should feel like they’re lost in the crowd.”
In addition to the Black Knight Award, the Student Council helped to organize the first winter formal at HHS on Feb. 9, and nearly 500 students attended the dance. In recent months, Student Council members have also assisted with coordinating a visit from a guest speaker and various initiatives to appreciate school district staff members such as custodians and bus drivers. The new programs and events align with HHS’ theme for 2024, “Raising the Bar,” which challenges students and teachers to elevate the school climate through acts of kindness and integrity. “Under Avery’s leadership, Student Council has really tried to give back to the school and its environment,” Virmani said. “They’ve done a great job serving the HHS community.”
