Dayspring To Welcome Metaxas And Cahn Remember America Series To Debut Interview Format BY ANN MEAD ASH

or 2021, Dayspring Christian Academy has chosen the theme “Return to the Foundation: Reviving the Seed of Our Nation” for its 11th Remember America Speaker Series event. Dayspring has also chosen to change its presentation format from individual speakers to an in-depth interview between two well-known authors. “Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “The focus will truly be on revival for America.” Remember America, which will feature author and radio host Eric Metaxas interviewing pastor and author Jonathan Cahn, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at the Lancaster County Convention Center. Tickets to the livestreamed event are available on a pay-what-you-can basis. Metaxas, the author of “Bonhoeffer,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Martin Luther,” is the host of the Eric Metaxas Radio Show and the creator of “Socrates in the City” events. Cahn is the author of “The Harbinger,” which compares the

“Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year.” Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective. “We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared, noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him

interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. A board, made up of parents of Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the school and the nation. “Over the centuries many prayers have been prayed and many declarations decreed regarding the Gospel purpose for America,” he said. “We are going to renew that and make sure the rising generations understand our heritage, so we can continue in what we believe (is) God’s plan for America.” In addition to the interview, the presentation will include performances by the Dayspring chorus and a presentation by a select student orator. Tickets to the livestreamed portion of the event, which must be purchased by Friday, April 23, are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

As successful local businesswomen, Megan Kalbach and Jacque Hess felt a pull to help others. The friends decided to use their experience and connections to create the Mountville Community Event. To be held Saturday, March 13, from noon to 6 p.m., the event will feature live music, food trucks, small businesses, crafters and more in Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. “We both have had very successful careers in sales and marketing before the pandemic,” Kalbach said. “We felt a calling after helping with the Mountville Carnival’s food truck event last year. We felt God was

calling us to help support local businesses. We saw small businesses struggling to get set up online this past year, struggling with figuring out how to do curbside pickup or togo options. We had the knowledge, and so we just sat down and created MJ Small Business Squad.” This is the first event MJ Small Business Squad is hosting, and Kalbach said attendees can expect a fun afternoon. “We’ll have more than 40 vendors and small businesses and lots of local churches

In 1999, Ketema felt the Lord leading her to pray about the clinic she hoped to open in Harar. “In 2015, we organized a few friends and started a board,” shared Ketema, who traveled to Ethiopia to assess the feasibility of a clinic in 2015. The clinic began serving patients in 2018. The organization is in the process of digging a fifth well to serve the clinic because water is so scarce in the area. In addition to the clinic, a home and a house mother for five orphan girls are supported by the ministry. Organizers request that those who wish to order a takeout meal do so by Wednesday, March 3, by emailing wmketema@gmail.com or eeclancaster@gmail.com or calling 717-669-0930 or 717874-8510. The Siloam Ethiopia clinic in Harar, Ethiopia, is in need of a blood chemistry machine. “The blood chemistry machine will check hemoglobin count, cholesterol, blood sugar, and liver function,” explained Wegayhu Ketema, one of the founders of the clinic. Ketema went on to explain that the in-depth blood analysis provided by the machine can help detect deficiencies and hidden diseases among the poor and homeless the free clinic serves. To start raising the $25,000 that is needed to purchase the machine, Ketema’s church, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville, will offer a curbside Ethiopian meal by donation from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The menu will include doro wat, which is a spicy chicken stew; misir wat,

Politics in the Muslim country caused her to flee to Nairobi, Kenya, along with her fiancé, Demeke Getahun, who is now her husband. In 1989, the door opened for them to travel to the U.S. as refugees, relocating first to Sioux Falls, S.D., and then to York, where a Living Word Church was supportive of their church back in Djibouti. Because she was not licensed in the U.S., Ketema worked as a nurse’s aide in several nursing homes, eventually moving from York to Lancaster and beginning to attend Ethiopian Evangelical. After six years, Ketema obtained her LPN license. She received her RN in 2013. “I love what I do,” said Ketema. “The Lord has been so gracious to me.”

Those purchasing meals will have a choice of three dishes served with injera, which is a thin Ethiopian bread. Asked how much she hopes the meal will raise, Ketema refused to speculate. “I don’t want to underestimate the Lord,” she said. Ketema’s faith has already brought her far. A decade ago, the clinic she helped found in Harar was still a dream she had held since the age of 8. Raised in Harar, Ketema would see a nurse driving herself to work each morning and dream of one day becoming a nurse and helping her people. Ironically, Ketema had to leave her homeland to make that happen. “My mother sent us to England to learn English and then to India,” explained Ketema,

Lynda Charles (left), president and founder of Help The Fight, and Susie Dailey, patient coordinator, display some of the handbags that will be available for ticket holders to win in April as part of a designer purse giveaway fundraiser.

Charles lost her mother to breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began. “Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled. “My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts. In 2020, Help The Fight assisted about 200 individuals. “COVID shut things down for a while. Those that needed assistance or screenings did not get them. We had a real rush when things opened,” Charles said. “Cancer is so unkind, and it does not stop during a pandemic.” Tickets for the designer purse giveaway must be purchased by Monday, March 22. The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but with COVID our fundraising events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.” Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags. “We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.” Winners of the bags will be contacted by phone, and their names will be announced on the Help The Fight website and Facebook page. All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings. “Wherever the need is of the patient is what we help with,” Charles said. “We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a vehicle for a one-vehicle family. We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.”

Lady Knights Top Lebanon and Conestoga Valley

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Coming down that proverbial “home stretch” of the season, Hempfield did what they needed to do, which was to win every game. When the Lancaster-Lebanon League season ended, Hempfield was the girls’ basketball Section One champ with a 7-1 league mark (12-4 overall). Cedar Crest - a team with whom the Knights had split the regular season series - finished at 62. The Falcons’ lone loss of the year had been to Hempfield until a February 9 setback to Manheim Township. “Our girls took care of business beating Penn Manor, Township and McCaskey,” Hempfield head coach Kendra Merrifield noted. “We also got a little help with Township beating Cedar Crest.” Hempfield won its final two regular season games on the road, beating Lebanon 61-37 on Friday, February 19, and winning by an almost identical score at Conestoga Valley on Monday, 62-37. Orianna Edmond poured in 15 points to lead the Knights at Lebanon. Hempfield began pulling away in the second quarter. Leading by only two points, the Knights outscored the Cedars 16-4 in that second stanza. They increased the lead to 22 points heading into the fourth quarter. Both Hempfield and McCaskey finished the regular season with 6-2 records, prompting a one-game tiebreaker game on Tuesday, February 23. The Knights (11-3 overall) opened up some space in the fourth quarter of a close game that was played at Manheim Township as the neutral site. Leading 43-40 heading into the final period, the Knights outscored the Red Tornado 19-11 for a 62-51 victory. Hempfield’s Ryan Hilton had a game-high 24 points while Michael Hester added 12 points nine of which came on three treys. The previous night, the Knights’ offense had poured it on against Conestoga Valley in a non-league game, passing the 80point mark in an 81-63 win at home. The game was already 24-22 heading into the second stanza with Hempfield increasing its lead to seven by halftime. Cole Overbaugh scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Knights. Hilton poured in 18 points, including four treys while Miguel Pena added 10 points. Overbaugh was the game’s top scorer the previous Friday against Lebanon with 15 as the Knights turned away the Cedars 65-26, allowing single digit scoring in each quarter. Daivon Edmond-Greene added 11 points. Hilton and Pena scored nine and eight points, respectively. Brandon Hagel nailed a pair of treys and also finished with eight.
