Moore’s keynote address is titled “Teaching to Diversity: The Evolution of Inclusion.” “With 21st-century learning, our definition of what is success needs to include more people. We can no longer be striving towards a model where the goal of education is to replicate and duplicate ‘sameness’ in individuals,” Moore said in an interview about her research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) posted at www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-community/ meet-our-students/moore-shelley. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in

special education from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University. She holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council doctoral fellowship at UBC, where she is exploring inclusive education for students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities in secondary schools. “We need to better understand whether and how meaningful learning of curricula becomes more accessible to all students when students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are included,” Moore explained. “To that end, my research will contribute by investigating how content area and special education teachers can collaborate to create rich learning opportunities for and with

The patrol members stick together during an outing: They cook together, hike together, and bunk together. special education services program support liaison Linda Swisher noted that because the number of substitute teachers attending the conference has dramatically increased, a session on substitute-specific classroom management has been added to the program. A tiered pricing system has been set for admission to the conference. Parents, substitutes, and university students will receive a special rate. An early bird discount is available for school district and agency personnel who register prior to Friday, May 1. Breakfast and lunch are included in the cost. Six Act 48 hours will be awarded for attending the keynote speech and two breakout sessions. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.iu13.org or call Swisher at 717-606-1878.

Bonding with troop members over a shared interest is one of Aaron’s favorite parts of Troop 30. “I know their names and likes,” he said. Troop 30 meets weekly on Mondays at 7 p.m. at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. Boys ages 10 to 18 are welcome to attend the meetings and join the troop. On Mondays, the members spend time in their patrols, planning for upcoming events and learning skills or knowledge that may be helpful at some point in their lives. “(It’s part of) advancing people through the ranks of Scouting,” Aaron explained. The troop participates in at least one outing nearly every month. The troop has done winter camping, team sports, and high adventures. In 2018, Troop 30 members camped in the Adirondacks. In 2019, the group completed a 30-mile backpacking route in West Virginia. The high adventure trip for 2020 is still being

planned, although Aaron suggested that it might involve a visit to New York City. Troop 30 hosts about three fundraisers a year, with a popcorn sale and a car wash featuring prominently on the fundraising calendar. Additionally, the troop completes several service projects every year. Scouts clean up the grounds around Holy Spirit Lutheran Church twice a year to show their gratitude for the church continuing to be its charter organization. Troop members have also cleaned up the paths at Camp Mack, collected donations for the food bank at Central Manor Church as part of the Scouting for Food program, and helped to organize and distribute toys and other gifts through Toys for Tots. Lady Knights Qualify for State Playoffs

by Ara Grigorian

The Hempfield girls’ basketball team is going to the state playoffs. The Black Knights qualified for the PIAA Class 6A brackets as the seventh seed out of District Three and will face District One champ Central Bucks West in a Friday evening game at Council Rock South High School. “It’s an exciting time for these kids,” said Kendra Merrifield, the Black Knights’ head coach who has guided the team to a 19-8 record thus far. “None of the kids who are in our program have been in states. It will be great for our seniors who’ve been in the program all these years and great experience for the younger players.” Reaching the state playoffs was not easy, however. The Black Knights, who had downed each and every Lancaster-Lebanon League opponent during the regular season and won Section One easily with a 13-0 league record, suffered two defeats in the district playoffs. Thanks to the fact that seven teams were going to qualify from District Three, Hempfield made it with a victory over

Dallastown in the seventh-place consolation game. “We knew going into that game that everything was on the line,” Merrifield said. In the second round of districts, the Knights lost to number two seed Cumberland Valley 55-26 back on February 20. The Knights’ attempt to bounce back with a consolation semifinal game at Manheim Township resulted in another loss, backing the Knights into a corner where they had to win the seventh/eighth-place game. “We had seen each other twice before,” Merrifield said of Manheim Township - the Knights’ arch rival in L-L League Section One. “Township is a team that is going to come out and play hard every time. It’s always hard to beat a team a third time in the same season.” Obviously the 13-0 league mark included two wins over Township. However, Monday, February 24 had Hempfield coming up short in a 38-29 game. The Blue Streaks (19-7) battled the Black Knights bucket for bucket through three quarters, holding a 2321 lead heading into the final quar-

ter. That was when the Streaks outscored Hempfield 15-8 to win the game by nine points. Jess Weinoldt led Hempfield with six points while Lauren Moffatt scored five. Katie Bushong of Township led all scorers with 15 points. The loss pushed the Knights into the seventh-place game against Dallastown. The ninth-seeded Wildcats came into this game with a 19-9 record, having lost to eventual district champ Central Dauphin in the quarterfinals and to Governor Mifflin in the consolation semis. Hempfield’s defense held D-town to only 20 points in a 39-20 victory at Landisville. Holding a slim 12-11 halftime lead, the Knights went on a 10-5 run in the third quarter and outscored the Wildcats 17-4 in the final stanza. Autumn Cook led all scorers with 12, scorching a pair of three-point baskets for the Knights. Lindsey Durkota scored 11 while Jess Weinoldt scored nine. “There was a multitude of kids who played key roles - it was a great team win,” said Merrifield. Unlike Manheim Township, the Wildcats were an unfamiliar team to the Black Knights. “They have a point guard who’s very talented and goes end-to-end on a lot of teams,” Merrifield said of the scouting report on Dallastown. “In practice we worked on controlling a lot of what they like to do and control the tempo of the game. “Defensively we played them in a three-quarter court,” continued the coach. “Our girls did a good job sticking with the game plan in that regard. They played a tight, in your face, manto-man. We pulled everyone on the perimeter to find shots. We also were able to penetrate and get easy layups.”

SWIMMING At the District Three Class 3A swimming championships, which were held at Cumberland Valley on Friday and Saturday, February 28-29, the Hempfield girls’ swim team finished ninth with 75 team points. Among those who helped the Black Knights reach that spot was the foursome of Maggie Shaffer, Anna Koger, Katelyn Wiglesworth and Katie Yoder who swam the 400-yard freestyle relay at a 3:38.96 clip on Saturday, claiming sixth place in the race. In Friday’s 200-yard freestyle relay, freshman Emily Taylor joined Wiglesworth, Shaffer and Yoder as the quartet grabbed seventh place, regis-

tering a time of 1:40.43. Hershey finished atop the standings with 370.50 team points while Wilson finished second at 236.50. Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Manheim Township finished in a twoway tie for seventh place with Central York at 114 points each. Hempfield edged the Dallastown Wildcats, who finished 10th with 74. Sophomore Ella Root registered a time of 1:06.28 in the 100-yard breaststroke. That time was good to capture eighth - only .06 seconds behind familiar foe Olivia Pyott of Manheim Township. Wiglesworth, in the 100-yard freestyle, shaved one full second her

seed time of 54.76. In Saturday’s finals, she swam the 100 free in 53.75 and finished 16th. The 200-yard medley relay team of Taylor, Root, Koger, and Rory Cantwell swam a combined time of 1:55.79 on Friday, finishing 15th. Shaffer clocked a 58.76 in the 100yard butterfly, which earned the Hempfield junior 10th place in the race. Taylor swam the 200 yard individual medley at a 2:15.90 pace, finishing 17th. Also on Friday, Wiglesworth and Yoder sprinted to 50-yard freestyle finishes of 25.15 and 25.32, respectively, to finish 18th and 19th.

The Lancaster County Conservation District is planning its 46th annual tree seedling sale. All trees and perennials are preordered, and orders are due Monday, March 9. Orders will be ready for pickup during a one-day distribution on Wednesday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The tree sale order list includes conifers and evergreens that would make a good wind break, hardwoods that offer shade and wildlife food and cover, as well as groundcover and pollinator-friendly perennials.

Some new selections are offered on this year’s list. Descriptions and photographs illustrating full-grown species are provided with the order form at www.lancaster conservation.org. Order forms may also be requested by phone at 717-299-5361, ext 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to the Lancaster County Conservation District, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, which is open on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual fundraiser allows the Lancaster County Conservation District to continue its educational programs for all county residents.
