Splish-Splash, It’s An Easter Egg Bash!

Bring On The Blues BY COURTNEY MENGEL

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

On Dec. 1, 2021, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association, now known as the YMCA of the Roses. Prior to the merger, the York YMCA branches were the only locations that hosted a Splish, Splash Easter Egg Bash. For the first time, this event will be offered at the City Center and Lampeter-Strasburg branches in Lancaster County. The Splish, Splash Easter Egg Bash will take place at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch, 800 Village Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to noon and at the City Center YMCA branch, 265 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. This twist on the traditional Easter egg hunt will require kids to bring a basket, a swimsuit, and a towel because they will hunt for eggs in the pool. There will also be face painting and a small craft in the pool See Easter Egg Hunt pg 6

In order to serve as much of the community as possible, Wayside Presbyterian Church offers two styles of morning worship every Sunday. From 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the church holds a traditional service with a choir, which is followed by refreshments and fellowship. From

11 a.m. to noon, there is a contemporary service with an informal praise featuring Grace Notes. Wayside is a medium-size, friendly congregation where everyone is welcome. For more details, call the church office at 717-898-1551 or visit the aforementioned website.

ne of Wayside Presbyterian Church’s core values is community outreach. Throughout the year, the church’s outreach committee continually develops programs and plans events that not only benefit the congregation, but also the community. Outreach committee members have found that a great way to bring people together is through music, which can help reduce people’s stress elevate their mood. On Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m., the public is invited to attend a free blues concert at the church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville. The church’s resident praise band, Grace Notes, will perform a mix of classic and contemporary blues music with hits from artists such as B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Wilson Pickett, Zach Williams, Etta James, and Gary Moore. Wayside music director Janelle Pabon and her bandmates in Grace Notes play during Wayside’s informal services on Sundays and perform every summer at the annual Waystock event. The band practices on Wednesdays beginning at 6 p.m. “We’re excited to offer the community a chance to come together, sit back, and relax while listening to some good blues music,” said Pabon, who noted that there will be a few songs the public will recognize, as well as a few new songs to experience. “We look forward to opening our doors to our community for a live musical event and showing off our very talented musicians and singers,” stated Deb Kereczman, Wayside public relations and outreach chair. Those who are unable to attend the event in person can watch it live on the church’s Facebook page and at https://waysidepc.org/. “Whether you are familiar with blues or not, we hope you’ll walk away with a smile on your face and

their own stories and learning from them and writing new endings led them to their purpose and how to live out their calling,” said Sandoe, who noted that the speakers will tell of how understanding the challenge and pain and joy that they experienced can be leveraged as a catalyst for change in others’ lives and the lives of communities. Sandoe noted that weathering more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions led organizers to conceive of the event. “We have heard that people are really tired … that their souls are exhausted,” said Sandoe. “We asked, ‘How do we get through this year feel-

ing more connected to ourselves … to one another, and to our community?’” Sandoe said that the GOTR team believes that people are craving the opportunity to learn something new and to come away informed, inspired, and hopeful. In addition to hearing the speakers, attendees will be asked to complete an immersive exercise “where they can share their own stories, hear from one another, and encourage one another,” Sandoe noted. “(They) can walk away with some actionable steps they can use to make a positive change in their life and for others,” Sandoe stated. “It’s a time to hear powerful stories, share their own powerful stories, and walk away with hope and inspiration to make beautiful things happen this year.” Sponsorship opportunities

are available for the breakfast, but Sandoe noted that many businesses are purchasing tables so that they might bring employees as a personal development or wellness initiative. “Employees are reaching burnout, and this is a way to help,” she noted. The breakfast is a fundraiser, and there will be opportunities to give to GOTR. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. About 50% of girls who participate are in need of scholarship funds to do so. Space is limited, and tickets are necessary to attend. Get Hooked On Fishing BY CATHY MOLITORIS

To hear Brian Cunningham tell it, there is nothing better than fishing. As the president of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), he not only gets to participate in the activity he loves, but he also gets to encourage the next generation to embrace the sport. The DFCA will host its annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 9, from 8 to 11 a.m. The event will be held at the reflecting pool on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, and is open to children age 11 and under. Also welcome will be all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license. The church will host a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall, and it will be open to derby participants and the public. “The derby is an opportunity to get kids and families outside and interested in fishing,” Cunningham stated, adding that the event also

serves to teach participants about trout management and introduce families to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Derby participants should bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. “We encourage the families to take what they catch up to a five-fish limit,” Cunningham said. The DFCA will stock hundreds of brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout for participants to catch and take home, including three large golden trout for prizes, Cunningham stated. Winners will receive a new fishing pole and accessories, donated by Precision Fly and Tackle in Lancaster. Cunningham noted that the DFCA has been holding the derby in this location for about 20 years. “This is a great opportunity to teach young children about fishing, teach them how to catch the fish, hold the fish and respect the sport,” he remarked. “Parents and guardians can take the fish home and show the children how to clean, prepare

and make a meal out of the fish. Fishing is a lifelong sport where you can go anywhere in the world and share this experience and joy with fellow fishermen.” The DFCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the DFCA has raised more than 4,000 trout annually since 1964 for stocking in the Donegal Creek. Cunningham hopes people will come out to the derby to participate in a sport that’s among his favorites. “For me and a large amount of our members, getting outside along a stream and the chal-

lenge of catching some of the most beautiful species of fish in PA (is what I love),” he said. “The thrill of the hook set and landing a stream-bred brook trout is the top of the list.” For more information on the fishing derby, contact Cunningham at 717-4137454. For more information on the DFCA, visit https://donegalcreek.org or search for “Donegal Fish & Conservation Association” on Facebook. All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the event. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area. No street parking will be allowed. There will be no rain date for the event.

Get Ready For The Return Of Rails & Ales

Forry’s Country Store

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

From 2016 to 2019, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, hosted an annual Rails & Ales event, where attendees could sample unique craft beer of all types from a variety of breweries while surrounded by the massive, historic trains in the museum’s 100,000-square-foot Rolling Stock Hall. Shortly before the museum’s 2020 event, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the museum to temporarily close its doors. After a two-year hiatus, Rails & Ales will return on Saturday, April 9. General admission will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. People must be age 21 or older to attend with the presentation of valid photo identification. Attendees will be strongly encouraged to wear masks when not eating or drinking and to

There will be hand sanitizing stations around the museum, and hand washing stations will be setup near the portable restrooms. “I am definitely looking forward to seeing brewers come back into the hall,” stated volunteer and program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “We have some great returning brewers from past years, but also quite a few brewers that are new to our event. Getting to see actual visitors out there enjoying the event, enjoying the beer, and having a good time is really exciting. We miss having people with us.” As of March 23, 17 breweries had confirmed their attendance at the event. Among them are Bespoke Brewing, Be Here Brewing Company, Lancaster Brewing Company, Spring House Brewing Company, Tröegs Independent Brewing, Big Dog Craft Brewing, and Iron Hill Brewery.

At the event, attendees will sample unique craft beer of all types from a variety of breweries while surrounded by the massive, historic trains.

“This event is a really great chance to experience breweries that are hyperlocal to Strasburg, from the greater Lancaster County area, as well as from York County and Chester County,” said Myers. Food from vendors, including Smokestack BBQ, Brotherly Love Scratch Kitchen, Blazin’ J’s, Spanish Island Food Truck, Strasburg Bakery, and Ruga Rue Jerky and Banquet Hall, will also be available for purchase. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event, which can be done by searching for “Rails & Ales” on www.eventbrite.com. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, a nonprofit organization started in 1983 that is dedicated to supporting the museum’s mission: to seek, preserve, and interpret the railroading history of Pennsylvania. A golden egg will be hidden among the other Easter eggs, and the person who finds it will win a special prize. “Because this is a new event for the Lancaster and Lampeter-Strasburg branches, I’m excited to see how it goes,” commented Jenny Galloway, co-coordinator of the Splish, Splash Easter Egg Bash. “It’s important for people to know this is a really fun community event. Master Gardener Hotline Available The Lancaster County Master Gardener Hotline is a free service offered through the Penn State Extension Office to help Lancaster County residents with gardening questions and concerns. Master Gardener volunteers answer questions on a variety of topics, including growing vegetables, fruits, ornamentals, and turfgrass; plant identification; pruning; and insect and disease problems. To help with identification and diagnosis, plant and insect speci-

mens can be brought to the Extension Office at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Digital photos for plant or insect identification can also be emailed to the office along with questions. Email is checked on weekdays. Individuals should call ahead when bringing a plant sample as the hotline is operating partly remote and partly in person. Along with vintage and handmade items, the pop-up will feature Fetish Brewing Company, a Lititz-based brewery. Luther noted the brewery will serve beermosas, a mix of beer and fresh-squeezed blood orange juice. “They were very popular at the February event,” she said. Additionally, Crazy Goat Coffee Company will host a coffee cart, featuring a variety of drinks. Luther said her motto for Vintage Revival Market is “bringing the community

together, one market at a time,” and she hopes the Columbia pop-up event will do just that. “We want to bring people together to have fun, meet new people and shop with small businesses,” she said. “It’s about encouraging people to shop local and to take advantage of the stores and businesses near the Market House as well. It’s a way to get to know the community.” For more information, search for “Vintage Revival Market” on Facebook.

You’re invited to “Hop Into the Market House” when Vintage Revival Market hosts a pop-up event on Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9. The festivities will take place behind Third Street Vintage, 17-19 S. Third St., Columbia, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the event will take place inside the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., as well as in the outside adjacent area, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. “There will be a lot of vintage and handmade items featured, in addition to the permanent tenants at the market,” said Debra Luther, market facilitator. “It’s a lot of variety.” Vintage Revival Market began in 2009, when a bunch of like-minded people got together to share things they found at auctions and thrift stores, Luther stated. “They’d meet in a Walmart parking lot,

pop their trunks and sell their things,” she explained. Eventually, the group moved its event to a church in Akron before the people who originated the idea asked Luther to take it over in 2018. “I was reluctant, because I’m not a vintage expert,” she said, noting that she operates her own business of handmade items. Under Luther’s direction, Vintage Revival Market has grown from about 30 vendors to upward of 70 and is held regularly at the Shops at Rockvale in Lancaster. When Luther moved to Columbia, she contacted the market house about opening a stand there for her business. “ We started talking about bringing Vintage Revival Market in instead,” she said. “It’s a nice way to bring more shoppers into the market.” The first Vintage Revival Market was held at the Columbia Market House in February. “It was a huge success,” Luther said.
