17th annual EPC Golf Outing to drive out homelessness
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAccording to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women

HHS Dance Theatre will celebrate 40th anniversary with “Connect”
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThis year, the Hempfield High School (HHS) Dance Theatre program will celebrate its 40th anniversary with “Connect,” a show that will commemorate performers past, present and future, as well as the local community that has adopted Dance Theatre’s annual spectacles as one of its favorite traditions. Performances will take place at the HHS Performing Arts Center, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m. A final matinee show will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase one hour before each performance at the box office and are now available online at www.hempfieldsd .org/tickets. A free preview of the show will be offered to all senior citizens who reside in Hempfield School District on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m.
A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much
and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis. One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will be included in the cost of admission; breakfast for the morning group will be provided by Joe on the Go Coffee Co., and the afternoon golfers will receive a boxed lunch from Trio Bar and Grill. Morning and afternoon golfers will be able to enjoy a meal from Peters’ BBQ when they finish their respective rounds.
dedication and time they put into this event.”
“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.
On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded
to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year. The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of
When deciding on a theme for the 2024 production, director Devon Groff began thinking of ways the 40th anniversary show could highlight what the HHS Dance Theatre program to the many students and audience members who have helped it become what it is today. “Some people have attended our shows for years. We were thinking of a special way to commemorate that, and the word ‘connections’ kept coming up,” Groff said. “There’s a connection between students, alumni, audience members and dancers. The theme kind of jumped off from there.”
Heritage Chorale slates concerts
The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster
The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its Spring Concert Series, “For the Beauty of the Earth.” The performances will take place on Sunday, April 28, at James Street Mennonite Church, 323 W. James St., Lancaster; Sunday, May 5, at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; and Sunday, May 19, at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. All concerts will begin at 4 p.m.
accompanied by Michael Good.
our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”
There is no admission fee, and freewill offerings will be accepted. No tickets or reservations are required.
The performances will celebrate the beauty of Earth and heaven through songs chosen by artistic director Barry L. Sawyer. The concert series’ title is taken from composer John Rutter’s rendition of the traditional hymn, which will be included in the program. The selections will also include “Sing Me to Heaven” by Daniel E. Gawthrop, “O Sing Joyfully” by Adrian Batten, “Dirait-on” by Morten Lauridsen, “God Be in My Head” by Andrew Carter, “Home on the Range” arranged by Mark Hayes, “Deep River” arranged by Mack Wilberg, and other ballads and spirituals. The chorale will be
Founded in 1994, the Heritage Chorale of Lancaster is a group of singers dedicated to excellence in the choral art form. With a repertoire spanning the 16th through 21st centuries and a variety of choral styles, the ensemble has performed at Colonial Williamsburg, Longwood Gardens, the Washington National Cathedral, and churches and historical institutions throughout the Lancaster County area. For more information, visit https://theheritagechorale. org/.
The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals.
According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It
keeps our doors open and our programs running.” Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https://epcgolfouting. com/register. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https:// goodsamservices.org.
The bond between HHS student dancers and alumni is particularly significant to Groff and her colleagues at the helm of the program, as each member of the current directing team participated in Dance Theatre shows as a student. The finale of the show is being designed by Cody Smith, who has frequently served as a choreographer and show director since he graduated from HHS in 1997. Additionally, Groff said she often receives texts from Dance Theatre alumni asking if they can attend rehearsals to lend a hand. “You can feel it - if you’ve done (Dance Theatre) before and come back, it just feels like home,” added Groff. “Once you’re a part of it, you can’t get rid of it, and it can’t get rid of you.”
Much of “Connect” will highlight human connection, something that became especially relevant
to the community after the quarantines and cancellations brought on by the recent coronavirus pandemic. The cast of the show will include members of the Class of 2020, whose own production was never held. “Connect” will explore the absence of connection and the concept of loneliness, as well as the bonds between romantic partners, platonic friends and mentors and students. The theme will extend beyond human connection as well; the first act will incorporate the connections found in nature, technology and science.
“Dance Theatre has this legacy; everyone in Hempfield knows about it,” Groff said. “Anyone can come give it a try, whether they’re a performer or not. It just feels like a community, a place you can be yourself, learn to dance, meet new friends and make lifelong friendships.”

Maurer will then show a PowerPoint to compare changes of the alleys from 1987 to the present day.
