Vagabonds Car Show Will Return To East Petersburg BY COURTNEY MENGEL
s part of the East Petersburg Community Park Event Series, the 12th annual Vagabonds Car Show will return on Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at the East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine Street, East Petersburg. Based in Landisville, the event coorganizer Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club was established in 1958. All vehicles are welcome to register for the show. “It can be a truck, car, motorcycle. It doesn’t even have to be custom,” stated Vance Spicer, vice president of Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club. Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club member Doug Rambler noted that there have been times where the entire park was filled with vehicles. As a result, some cars had to park on the baseball field. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the band ThunderRoad Rockin’ Country will perform in the amphitheater.
Hometown Heroes To Hear The Bells BY COURTNEY MENGEL
East Petersburg Mayor James Malone noted that Sunday, May 2, has been proclaimed Bells Across Pennsylvania Day. On May 2, at 7 p.m., residents, businesses, and churches will be encouraged to ring bells for three minutes in a solid chorus of statewide support for the Pennsylvanians who put themselves in harm’s way to serve the public during the pandemic. 14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL
In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nine-
teen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides
housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.

There will be four different food trucks throughout the park. Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club will hold a Chinese auction and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Hospice & Community Care. Sixty different trophies will be awarded to registered vehicles. Spicer said he is hoping for good weather and a great turnout. President of the East Petersburg Events Committee Kristin Troops thanked one of the committee’s biggest sponsors, Lancaster Toyota. “ We have a gorgeous park, and thanks to them, we have a wonderful amphitheater for the park,” she said. On the day of the car show, there will be an ampitheater sponsorship tower dedication at 1 p.m. There will be same-day registration for vehicles, and the first 200 registered participants will receive a collector’s edition event glass. In a typical school year, Hempfield High School (HHS) would stage a musical in March and a dance theater performance in May. Last year, students performed their production of “Beauty and the Beast” shortly before schools had to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, HHS’ dance theater performance was canceled. This year, HHS will combine both theater and dance in its musical, “FAME The Musical.” “FAME The Musical” follows a group of New York High School of Performing Arts students who contemplate concepts such as body image, identity, popularity, friendship, and more. HHS’ 2021 production will feature a cast of 80 students and an all-student orchestra of 17 musicians. The show will be directed by HHS choral director and music teacher Alejandro Ramos and stage director/choreographer Cody Smith. “The show is malleable because it doesn’t have a strict story with a certain set of music,” explained Ramos. “We have a cool opportunity to present ‘FAME The Musical’ the

Ewell Plaza Survey Posted The next phase of community engagement for Ewell Plaza began recently with a survey to gather input and inspiration for the façade artwork on the future parking garage and public library. This survey is the first step of additional community engagement opportunities taking place this spring and summer. Artists Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt will host listening sessions and workshops with the Lancaster community that, along with the survey, will inform the design concepts of the façade artwork. of the Lancaster community will have the opportunity to rank their favorite of at least two concept designs. The Lancaster Parking Authority has contracted Behar and Marquardt to create the façade artwork on its development in Ewell Plaza, which will be affixed to the new Lancaster Public Library building. The City of Lancaster is facilitating the community engagement for this public art project. The artists are currently coordinating with the city to finalize dates and formats for the upcoming public participation.
Readers may visit www.engage.cityoflancasterpa.com and click on the Ewell Plaza Art Explorations project to complete the survey. The survey will be open until Friday, May 14. Nearly two years ago, the public space on the east side of the 100 block of North Queen Street was renamed after Barney Ewell, an Olympian from Lancaster. A Celebration Of Giving BY ANN MEAD ASH
Organizers of the Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church mortgage burning service are looking forward to all the things they will be celebrating when the event is held at the church on Sunday, May 2. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a multimedia presentation that will trace the congregation to its beginnings on East King Street in Lancaster. “It’s a celebration of our history,” said Nancy Marshall, who was born into the church and met her future husband there in Sunday school. “We will focus on celebrating the generosity of the many individuals who participated in the project in the last years,” added pastor Christopher Seifferlein. The 9:30 a.m. service will mirror the 1993 building dedication service, followed by burning the mortgage outside the church.
The church first formed when 17 people met in 1904, with a goal of worshipping in English rather than German. “It was Missouri Synod Lutheran from the beginning,” noted Seifferlein, who explained that the local district began as an outreach to English-only congregations. Marshall added that the church, which had locations on North Ann Street and Plum and Clay streets before moving to the present location, was always focused on Christian education for children, hosting the first vacation Bible school in Lancaster in 1922. Marshall noted that by the mid1980s, the congregation was look-
pleted, members and youths were invited to write Scripture verses on the walls and under the carpets. “There may be 100 or more,” said Fry, who chose the last part of Isaiah 61:3 to write on one of the chancel steps. Seifferlein, who was born in Detroit and graduated from seminary in 2003, has served congregations in Minnesota and rural Wisconsin. Seifferlein began serving Mount Calvary in November 2019. “I just got to know everyone’s names before COVID hit,” recalled Seifferlein. “Then we dealt with this challenge together.” Seifferlein noted that one strength of the church is
ing to build a new home on land at its present location, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz. “We built it ourselves with the help of Laborers for Christ,” said Marshall. Seifferlein explained that Laborers for Christ, an organization that recently ceased to exist, was associated with the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. Retired persons from around the country traveled to the church with campers and stayed in what is now the parking lot while completing the building. Celebration organizer Farley Fry, who joined the congregation in the early 1990s, remembered that before the church drywall was com-

Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epcgolf outing.com. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland
