Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances. Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as coronavirus treatments, or the promise of services related to the virus in an See Preventing Scams pg 2

Hempfield Updates Graduation Plans Hempfield School District has officially announced that there will be no in-person commencement ceremony for the Hempfield High School Class of 2020. In a statement sent to graduating seniors and their families on April 28, principal Jim Dague said that the decision was essentially made by the venue. “Due to the current public health crisis, and following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance for large gatherings, F&M (Franklin & Marshall College) has cancelled all events on their campus through the summer. Therefore, our Hempfield High School commencement ceremony at F&M has been cancelled,” Dague explained. “While this is disappointing news for all of us, members of our high school team had already started planning for a virtual commencement experience as a back-up. This back-up plan has now become our priority.” Commencement caps, gowns, and diploma covers will be mailed to graduating seniors. Those items will be needed for specific aspects of the virtual experience. A message containing specific directions from MarchingOrder and StageClip will
be emailed to students. Both businesses specialize in personalizing graduation ceremonies utilizing digital and social media. Dague did not entirely reject the idea of an inperson celebration. “I know this announcement will cause a lot of emotions, as well as ideas and ‘what if?’ questions,” Dague said. “At this time, we must wait to proceed with other ideas about any type of face-to-face event. As we learn more about Governor Wolf ’s plan to reopen Pennsylvania, and specifically Lancaster County, we will be able to consider any plans for something special to be held at some point in the summer for members of the Class of 2020.” Any events would need to be in compliance with the updated recommendations for mass gatherings and large community events, Dague added. Nothing has officially been planned as of yet. The viewing details of the virtual commencement will be announced later. “As we have said many times, we want to celebrate the Class of 2020,” Dague remarked. “You have earned it!”

The Mountville Lions Club partnered with Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) to purchase the Brady Buggy Wagon. The LCIF offers grants to Lions districts and multiple districts in amounts from $10,000 to $150,000. The Mountville Lions were able to get a small grant of $500 from the LCIF as part of its Childhood Cancer Pilot Grant Program. The goal of the program is to improve the quality of life for children receiving cancer treatments as well as their families. The Mountville Lion matched the grant to purchase the Brady Buggy Wagon, which cost $1,000. “These buggies are for the happiness of all the children in a pediatric unit,” said Mountville Lions president Thomas Heisler.
Mountville Lions Club members (front, from left) Linda Eaton, Joyce Sweger, Gary Glick, Thomas Heisler, and Raymond McKimm visited Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health on March 12 to drop off a Brady Buggy Wagon for the pediatric ward. The purpose of the wagon is to provide children with a safe, familiar means of transportation while they are in the hospital.
Thank you!

Lions Club Donates Brady Buggy The Mountville Lions Club donated a Brady Buggy Wagon to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health’s pediatric ward on March 12. The wagon gives children a safe, familiar means of transportation within a hospital. It includes a trailer to tow an IV pole, enabling children to be mobile even when attached to an IV. The Brady Buggy Wagon was created by the Hugs for Brady Foundation, which was founded by Sherrie and Michael Wells in 2009, shortly after their 13-month-old son, Brady Michael, was diagnosed with a very rare form of leukemia. In 2010, Brady passed away at 23 months old. One of the goals of the Hugs for Brady Foundation is to provide Brady Buggy wagons to every hospital serving children.

•Do not buy masks, medicines, sprays, or other products purporting to protect against the coronavirus. The CDC has said that cloth masks may be helpful in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and handmade masks are acceptable for compliance with Pennsylvania’s shutdown regulation that masks must be worn in public and in the workplace. However, Product Safety and Consulting Services owner Misty Henry stressed that cloth masks have not been tested according to FDA or National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards to prove prevention or mitigation of virus transmission. •Do not accept any offers that require investment in any security that purports to provide a breakthrough treatment, cure, or vaccine against the coronavirus. “The best families can do is keep our aging loved ones informed by alerting them to what is a present danger,” Osborne advised. If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-299-7650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717-664-1180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Osborne stressed that 911 should be called only in the case of an emergency.

attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of frauds that have sprung up around COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice.gov/corona virus/combattingfraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. •Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one, and if we did, our own doctors would offer it,” Osborne said. •Never click on any link from an unfamiliar source, as that is the primary way that scammers are able to install malware or viruses on a computer. The DOJ also recently announced that malicious sites have been masquerading as public health organizations, such as the American Red Cross, or have tried to trick people into providing bank account details, so even links from trusted email senders should be verified before clicking.

registration process in person. For now, all that is needed is a name, address, and phone number to generate a library card which provides access to all of LPL’s digital resources, including OverDrive, Hoopla, Tumblebooks business and nonprofit databases, and research resources. In addition, a list of activities is available at www.lancasterpubliclibrary.org to keep people of all ages busy while practicing social distancing. The list is open to everyone, regardless of whether they have a library card or not.
Additional funds have been released to both the OverDrive and Hoopla accounts so more titles can be added and greater access can be provided. The library started to offer virtual programs, and programs like book clubs and knitting groups lend themselves to an online format. A couple of virtual story times are in the works, and the Children and Teen Services staff members are working to create content to make up for canceled programs like STEM Night and Family Gaming.

Pettis Earns Entomologist Certificate Locally-owned Dominion Pest Control, which serves the Susquehanna Valley, recently announced that its general service manager, Shawn Pettis, has become the first person to become a public health entomologist (PHE) certificate holder, a new certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Pettis recently received his PHE certification after becoming an associate certified entomologist (ACE), which indicates that the certified person has acquired skills to identify insects and understand their biology. The PHE certificate acknowledges that the holder “studied for and passed a rigorous exam covering insects and the diseases they vector, as well as principals of integrated pest management.” In today’s world with diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease related to pests found in backyards, such as ticks and mosquitoes, Dominion is pleased to have Pettis on board to help make decisions about control measures

Together, we can stop the spread. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. Clear Water For Heroes Fishing Tournament Planned Inaugural Event Set For May 17 By Ann Mead Ash
Bucher Elementary thirdgrade student and Cub Scout Pack 93 member Case Baccio likes to fish, and so do his friends. “A lot of people I know love to fish,” said Case. After attending a Warrior Weekend to Remember in Milltown, Ohio, in July of 2019, Case had an idea. The gathering, which is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals (BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax sky diving team, is held to honor veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes. The event includes enriching experiences that facilitate friendships and encourage emotional healing. Inspired by
the gathering, Case decided to combine his love of fishing with a goal of raising $8,000 in scholarships to send two participants to the 2020 Warrior Weekend, scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, to Sunday, July 12. Case is working with others to organize the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, which will be held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, more commonly known as Camp Mack, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Sunday, May 17. The tournament will be open to both children and adults. The adult tournament will be held from 7 to 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue lunch, and the children’s tournament will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. According to Eric McCullough, who is helping Case to organize the event, scoring of the competition will be
based on each participant’s heaviest catches. “(Contestants) will be scored on their top five (fish),” explained McCullough, who noted that the Camp Mack lake is home to fish in a variety of sizes. Case attended the 2019 Warrior Weekend with his mother, Ali Bucher, and McCullough, who is Bucher’s boyfriend. “My mother’s boyfriend is a professional skydiver with Team Fastrax,” explained Case. Team Fastrax is a professional skydiving team that supports the Warrior Weekend. “They bring together veterans and family members of veterans who were killed,” added Case. McCullough, who was a new member to the team in early 2019, wanted Case and Bucher to learn about the Weekend to Remember. Shortly after arriving, Bucher met a woman named Diana Wiener, who had

journeyed from Kentucky to the event. Case explained that Wiener is a member of a Gold Star Family, meaning that she is an immediate family member of a service member who died while serving in a time of conflict. “We are now friends with her,” said Baccio. McCullough explained that Wiener lost her son, Jeffery, who was serving in the Navy in 2014, but Bucher added that the pain of losing Jeffery was still fresh when the two women met. The experience of meeting Wiener and learning her story made such an impression on Case that he returned to Pennsylvania eager to talk to his Scout troop about ways to help out. “A lot of (members of) my den like to fish,” said Case. “We thought, ‘Why not hold a fishing tournament?’” Bucher explained that the family has been working with Matthew Adams, an executive at the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America. “I asked if he could help, and he suggested we hold it at Camp Mack, and the Boy Scouts would help promote it,” said Bucher. She added that she is especially grateful to friends and family taking part in the effort. The fishing tournament will offer special categories and rates for those who have certain

In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My
dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.” Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”

Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to take notice. SWAN is an after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org. While it was not always easy for Bryanna to incorporate music into her life, she found ways to exercise her passion. “When I got the opportunity (I took) music in school,” recalled Bryanna, who listed violin, viola, and recorder among her first instruments. “(When there was) anything to do with hands-on music or singing or performing (offered), I was the first to sign up,” she said. Bryanna attended Price Elementary in
SDoL for kindergarten and then moved to Washington Elementary for first grade, where she started playing violin. But from third through fifth grades, Bryanna did not stay in one place for long. “I bounced around in schools. I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson.

Paul Davis Restoration of Central Pennsylvania is showing its appreciation to local firefighters, law enforcement personnel and emergency first responders with complimentary cleaning services during the pandemic. Trained technicians will clean and apply U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved disinfectants throughout area emergency personnel vehicles such as fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and other first responder vehicles covering all common touch points and surfaces. Mike Oster, director of client services, and his staff team will perform additional first responder vehicle cleaning and applications of disinfectant on Thursday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at Park City Center and the former Sears automotive location, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. Oster is also offering the free services to local public transportation authorities and retirement home transportation operators, along with other first responders. As the Paul Davis office anticipates increased interest in the additional cleaning events, Oster asks that participants communicate with the office in advance to know how many vehicles will be available for cleaning.
