he Hempfield Foundation will hold its 2022 Golf Tournament on Monday, June 27, at Conestoga Country Club, 1950 Stone Mill Road, Lancaster. The event will begin with registration and lunch at 11 a.m., followed by golf starting at 12:30 p.m. The title sponsor for the tournament is also the foundation’s Premier Community Partner, Penn State Health. “The Hempfield Foundation holds this annual event to support our teacher grant program,” said foundation president Doug Herr. “The monies we raise go toward funding grants to help Hempfield teachers in all school buildings to implement the great ideas they have for their classroom.” At the 2021 tournament, the winning team consisted of Wes Konchar, John Knoll, Paul O’Connell, and Matt O’Connell from Donegal Insurance Group, a 1993 partner of the foundation.

“We reach more children in the summer than during the school year because each week we are in a different location,” said Nadine Welk, children’s ministry specialist coordinator with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), perhaps best known for the Good News Clubs the organization runs after school. Over the summer, CEF organizes Five-Day Clubs, vacation Bible school (VBS) programs, and Good News Camps. This year, summer programs will be held at 17 locations in Lancaster County. Welk explained that the basic ministry curriculum is the same for all programs, which begin with a 90-minute activity period including large group game time, welcome and prayer, a Word Up period with a catchy phrase concerning the main lesson, Bible verses and songs, a Bible lesson, a review, and closing games. FiveDay Clubs, which use the 90minute basic format, are held in host homes. For the summer of 2022, host homes have been

Hosts generally invite participants to their home, where CEF summer missionaries and staff oversee the program. VBS programs are held at churches. They add a snack and a 30-minute craft to the basic program. “The church that hosts us will provide volunteers to help with the crafts,” said Welk, who explained that CEF missionaries and staff work with the church VBS director on the craft and can be present to help if needed. CEF VBS programs are lined up at seven area churches. Refton, Aug 1, to 5. Day camps, which are held weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., are scheduled for Grace Baptist Church, Marietta, July 11 to 15, and Elizabethtown Grace Church, from Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 12. “The difference with camp is that we add a lot of enrichment activities,” said Welk. “This summer, we will be focusing on the Wordless Book, which is a way of explaining salvation to children without any written words.” Campers bring their own lunches, but a snack is provided. “(For camps) we have water day on Fridays,” said Welk. “The kids are encouraged to wear a bathing suit with a Tshirt over it, and we use buckets and hoses, and the kids love it.” “Our theme for all our programs this summer is ‘Turned Around,’” explained Welk. “All of our lessons talk about how a belief in Jesus and a relationship with God transforms your life.” Welk said that CEF Lancaster summer missionaries and interns, ages 14 to 18, will train at Camp Harmony in western Pennsylvania in June. During their week at camp, they will learn the program and be evaluated on each part that they teach. “So it is older kids teaching younger about Jesus,” said Welk. Space is limited in the camps, and registration for each program is required one week before the program starts. Children may be registered for a program by clicking on the “summer programs” button at www.ceflancaster.org. Readers who have specific questions may call 717-569-5412.

trophies for the winners. The top prize for the car show will be called Parker’s Pick and will be chosen by Iron-Leg president Matthew Millhouse’s son, Parker, in whose honor the organization was started. Parker, 9, was born without his right leg. Iron-Leg Corp. became an official nonprofit in April 2021, and it raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. Previous fundraisers have helped the organization purchase a prosthetic hand for an 11-year-old boy in York, and the group has a 3-year-old Lancaster boy on its list for a prosthetic hand as well. Each prosthetic can cost between $10,000 and $50,000, Sean said, explaining that Iron-Leg commits to providing new prosthetics for the recipient as the child grows, up until he or she reaches age 18. He noted that Iron-Leg has set a goal of raising $30,000 at the family day.

Lax Teams Compete in L-L League Finals

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

The Hempfield girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams both squared off against Manheim Township in the LancasterLebanon League finals. The Township girls’ team came away with a 14-8 victory on Thursday, May 12 while in the boys’ championship, Township topped Hempfield 14-6. The matches were played as a doubleheader at Manheim Township with the boys’ match as the nightcap. Brynne Axe and Kelsea Dague led the Hempfield girls in scoring with Axe finding the net four times while Dague delivered two goals and two assists. “Kelsea is very dynamic,” said Claudia Ovchinnikoff, the Hempfield head coach. “She is very good at reading defenders, taking advantage of what they’re going to do. She and Brynne are smart lacrosse players.” Isabelle Masengarb and Whitney Hershey scored one goal each. Eryn Murphy saved five of the shots on goal for Hempfield. Township’s Sydney Witmer led all scorers with seven

goals. The Black Knights ended a long winning streak by the Blue Streaks the previous week - 101 regular-season league games that Township had won in a row. Hempfield, who wrapped up the regular season 11-0 in league play, had defeated Cocalico 16-6 in the first round of the playoffs on May 10. With the loss to Township, the Knights fell to 17-2. Township and Hempfield entered the District Three Class 3A playoffs as the first and second seeds, respectively, both earning a firstround bye. In their quarterfinals match on Wednesday, May 18, the Knights topped Southwestern 12-7, punching their ticket to the semifinals against Governor Mifflin. The Streaks downed Dallastown 21-3, earning a semifinals berth against fourth-seeded Wilson. Axe led all scorers with six goals and an assist in the district playoff game while Hershey netted two goals and assisted on two more. “Brynne is our ‘whatever you ask her to do’ player,” Ovchinnikoff said. “In some of our games, she’ll win 10 or

11 draw controls; not too many players can win that many.” Masengarb also scored two goals while Dague and Makenzie Warfel each scored once. The boys’ league championship match was 3-3 after one quarter. Township outscored Hempfield 8-2 over the next two periods. Zack Antesberger led Hempfield offensively, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist. A.J. McAlpine also recorded an assist while Cole Gibbons, Jason Hilton, and Stephen Pitts each netted one goal. Of the 29 shots on goal by the Blue Streaks, Matt Wiest saved 15 for the Knights. Garrett Campagna finished with four goals and two assists to lead the Streaks as they improved to 15-3 on the year. Hempfield fell to 13-4. BOYS VOLLEYBALL The Warwick boys’ volleyball team had some unfinished business last season and the season before that. Leaving a team hungry for a championship for consecutive seasons proved costly as Warwick defeated Hempfield 3-1 on Monday, May 16, in the L-L League title match at Cocalico. In fact, the Knights made the Warriors crave this even more when they downed Warwick 25-20 in the opening set. Every one of the next three sets were hard-fought, close finishes with Warwick winning 29-27, 25-19 and 25-21. Hempfield was going for its Photo by Mark Palczewski 25th league trophy. Knights with 12 kills while Cole Overbaugh, Aiden Beiler and Parker Wolfe, who also recorded four blocks, each registered 10 kills. Caden Bonner dished out 44 assists and Mason Orth finished with 20 digs. Kyle Charles (15 kills), Jacob Lobb (13 kills) and Adam Gingrich (17 assists) were among the leaders for Warwick. The Knights were coming off a 3-0 defeat of Lancaster Mennonite on Friday, May 13, in a league playoff game at Warwick. The scales tipped in Hempfield’s favor in this one with three close sets - 25-20, 25-22 and 25-20 - going the Knights’ way. Keener and Beiler had nine and eight kills, respectively. Overbaugh added seven kills and two blocks on the night. Bonner distributed 28 assists and Orth served up five aces. Elijah Lazor led the Blazers with 19 kills, two aces and four blocks. TRACK The Hempfield boys track and field team finished fifth with 60 team points only two points behind fourth-place Ephrata at the L-L League Track & Field Championships which were held at Hempfield on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14. McCaskey finished atop the boys’ team standings with 100 points. Aiden Hodge earned two gold medals on the day, winning both the 1600- and 3200-meter events with respective times of 4:16.58 and 9:16.89. Also helping the team with

its strong finish was Logan Muhlberg’s second-place (50.88) finish in the 400-m and Chris Titter’s time of 1:59.81 in the 800, which earned him seventh place. In the relays, the Knights had two fourth-place finishes and one fifth-place finish. They also had three top five finishers in field events. In the 4x800, the relay team of Tittler, Dale Winand, Ryan French and Sam Freedman took fourth with a time of 8:15.12. The foursome of Xavier Peralta, Diellon Trinaku, Elijah Hinton and Gabriel Benjamin sprinted to a fourth-place finish at 44.08 seconds in the 4x100. Brody Weachter came through with a pole vault effort of 11-6, earning fifth overall while Braydon Felsinger’s 40-2.25 triple jump was good for ninth place. Mia Sheldon had a seventhplace finish in the girls’ 100-m sprint. She posted a time of 17.36 seconds. Giving back comes naturally to Sean, who learned the importance of supporting the local community from watching his uncle, Ken Laukhuff, who helped to create the local Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. Other events organized by Iron-Leg include an annual golf tournament held in September. “This day is going to be so much fun, and we’re really counting on the generosity of the public,” Sean said of the family day, which will feature free admission. “Our motto is ‘Giving kids a helping hand and a leg to stand on,’ and we want to continue to do that right here in our community.” For more information on the Car Show and Family Day, search for “Iron-Leg Corp” on Facebook or visit www.ironleg.org.

Black Rock will provide bus transportation to a partnering church just minutes away from where the kids live. Their ballfield will be beautifully and creatively transformed into a place where kids can be kids! Lunch and snacks will be served daily, and the children will have the opportunity to participate in archery, games, and more. From 9:30am to 3:30pm throughout the month of June, we aim to serve 150 kids in the first year alone.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, will host the 40th annual Memorial Day program on Sunday, May 29, at 2 p.m., rain or shine. This year’s program is co-sponsored by the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council and AMVETS Department of Pennsylvania. John Spruyt, director of Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, will welcome the audience. Bernie McDonald, AMVETS past department commander, will deliver the Memorial Day address. Shuttle bus transportation to and from the cemetery will be available. There will be limited handicapped-accessible parking at the cemetery. Parking, the shuttle bus service, and the program are open to the public and free of charge. The Avenue of Flags display will be flown through Veterans Day week, Saturday, Nov. 12. This presentation is made up of over 700 casket flags that have been donated by veterans’ families. State, territorial, and military branch service flags will also be on display. Families may bring the casket (interment) flag they received at their veteran’s military honors funeral to the program and donate it to be flown on the Avenue of Flags. Founded in 1993, the Hempfield Foundation is a separate not-for-profit organization that supports the educational mission of the Hempfield School District through grants and scholarships. The foundation awards grants to the Hempfield faculty for initiatives that are designed to enhance the academic experiences of

Hempfield students. These grants allow teachers to try creative, research-based ideas that they may not otherwise be able to implement. The annual scholarships given by the foundation aim to help graduating seniors succeed in their transition to college or other postsecondary educational opportunities.
