Ministry To Host Its First Blood Drive n conjunction with Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank, the Faith in Action Ministry will host its first blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. The blood drive will take place in the parish hall of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Once known as Social Outreach, the Faith in Action Ministry is run by a committee made up of members from St. Edward’s Episcopal Church. The committee is responsible for coordinating projects that establish and maintain a relationship between the community and the church. Committee members aim to schedule events and projects in tandem with religious seasons such as Pentecost, Lent, and Easter. Since the church is currently celebrating Pentecost, the committee found it fitting to host a blood drive. “I’m looking forward to, and hoping for, a successful turnout,” stated Leslie Arnold, Faith in Action Ministry committee member and

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home.

primary blood drive coordinator. “According to Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank, one pint can save three lives. People should participate for the sake of giving back in terms of helping others as a result of their donation.” On the day of the blood drive, the Faith in Action Ministry will promote its project called Books for Prisoners. Throughout the summer, the committee will collect books for a small library that an Episcopalian prison chaplain will keep for prisoners in Lancaster. The committee is looking for donations of Bibles, devotionals, inspiring biographies, and more. Paperbacks are preferred, but hardcovers will be accepted. For a specific list of books that will be accepted, visit http://bit.ly/BooksForPrisoners. Arnold said she hopes that other Episcopal churches in Lancaster County will participate in the blood drive. Walk-ins will not be available at the blood drive. To sign up for a time to donate, visit http://bit.ly/StEdsBloodDrive.

Samaritan Counseling Center reminds community members that it offers resources to help support teenagers on their journey toward mental health and wellness. Among these resources is TeenHope, a mental health program that screens middle and high school students at Lancaster County schools for anxiety, depression, and suicide risk. After youths are identified as at-risk, TeenHope collaborates with parent and teenagers to connect them with mental health resources in the area through referral recommendations. Since the program’s beginning in 2013, more than 13,000 students have been screened. Due to an increase in the number of local teenagers at risk for anxiety, depression, and suicide in Lancaster County in the last year, as well as the virtual schooling that has occurred during the pandemic, TeenHope is developing a fully digital screening process. The transition to digital has been fueled by the donations of many individual supporters, as well as local organizations such as the High Foundation, which contributed a $15,000 grant, and LOHF, which provided a total of $30,000 in grants. Parents, grandparents, and loved ones can find resources for the teenagers in their lives at www.scclanc.org/teenhope/resources.

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Nook,” said Rankin. “We’re fortunate to have the Nook working with us on this. They’ve been a great asset.” HHS staff member and vice president of the East Petersburg Lions Club Wendy Toole knew that funds raised for prom would need to be kept safe. Consequently, she asked the East Petersburg Lions Club to sponsor the event. Toole has been serving as a communications liaison between the parents, HHS administration, and various groups at HHS involved with planning graduation and prom. She is the parent of a senior. When deciding on a name for the event, Toole did not want to call it a prom. “We came up with ‘Black Knight Red Carpet Gala,’ which is a play on our school colors,” she said. “We refer to it as a backwards prom,

The past year has been challenging for many people, especially students. Instead of canceling end-ofthe-year events for seniors, the Hempfield School District decided to get creative. The Hempfield High School (HHS) prom is typically held at the Eden Resort and Suites in Lancaster. Due to the pandemic, the Eden as well as the school district have specific protocols. A survey distributed to the HHS seniors asked if they would be interested in attending an event with restrictions. The administration received a limited response, but the respondents expressed interest in attending such an event. As a result, a group of parents stepped forward and started working with staff members within the school district
to plan prom. This parent group is twopronged: They will help set up and decorate the stadium for HHS graduation on Tuesday, June 1, and then they will produce the HHS prom on Thursday, June 3. “We had a conversation with the senior class, asking them what they wanted,” explained HHS senior parent Jodi Rankin. “I remember a young man who said, ‘I want a dance party, and if I have to wear a mask, I will!’ These kids just want to have a semblance of normalcy and a big celebration.” Rankin contacted possible venues such as The Renaissance Faire, the Lancaster Barnstormers’ Stadium, and the Spooky Nook Sports Complex. “We started to secure dates and then we made a deposit at the
Approximately 100 works of art by Ron Ettelman will be exhibited and auctioned on Thursday, June 3, at 6 p.m. at Boltz Auctions, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. A preview will be held on Wednesday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The auction is being held in connection with the retirement of Ron and his wife, Virginia. After 45 years of business, the Ettelmans recently closed the doors of Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery in Mountville. The building went to auction on May 13. The artworks to be sold in the upcoming auction are those items that remained at the Ettelmans’ building and that they cannot store. Half of the proceeds of the auction
will be donated, with 25% of sales going to the Lancaster Museum of Art and Demuth Museum and 25% going to the Ware Center. Ron described many of his works as whimsical, often with a deeper story lurking under the surface for viewers to interpret in their own way.
In 2016, he previously presented a retrospective exhibit of 153 works at the Ware Center. This exhibit’s title, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” described the artist going to the studio in the basement of his farmhouse to work on his art. For more details, call Boltz Auctions at 717-392-4257.

To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website www.lancasterbeekeepers.org provides a list of swarm collectors divided by location. “A swarm may sit there for 20 minutes, two hours, or two days,” said Stahl. “When you see a swarm, you want to get a beekeeper there as fast as you can.” Stahl said that beekeepers use a special bee box that smells familiar to bees with an entrance that can be made smaller and even closed to capture bees. The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners
plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water for bees can be a controversial subject because water can be a point of disease transfer. She recommends only putting out water after several weeks of drought and then being sure to include rocks or logs for bees to keep them from drowning. “Some bees have the job of being the water collectors,” she said, noting that water can be used to cool the hive or thin honey that has crystallized for use. “A lot of people are using the venom from honeybees for medicinal purposes,” said Stahl, who noted that treatments for arthritis and Lyme disease are being studied. She noted that if one is stung accidentally, it is wise not to grab the stinger. “Use a fingernail to flick the stinger up and away,” she said. “If you squeeze, you (are injecting) the venom into you, but by flicking you remove the whole thing.” In addition to the website, information about the society may be found by searching for “Lancaster County Beekeepers Society” on Facebook.

Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. BASEBALL There’s winning and there’s winning ugly. In a non-league baseball game that wasn’t very pretty, the Knights beat Lower Dauphin 12-7 at home on May 14. The game went back and forth as
the two sides combined for 18 walks and nine errors. Austin Dunlap and Christian LaBarbera both scored in the home half of the first inning to make it a 2-2 ballgame. LaBarbera doubled to spark the Knights’ second-inning rally. He drove in Logan Harelson and Cam Berger. The Falcons scored three to take a 5-4 lead. Walks hurt Hempfield in the inning. Berger came on in relief. Gavin Constein drove home Peter
Fiore. Another single followed before LaBarbera slugged a two-run double. Four Hempfield errors helped Lower Dauphin plate more runs in the fourth inning. But with a fourrun fifth inning, the Knights built a lead that would prove to be the 127 winning margin. They were aided by walks and errors sandwiched around a Constein double. Hempfield finished the year 10-9 (5-5 league).

To kick off National EMS Week, Lancaster EMS hosted “A Celebration of Life Remembered Dedication Ceremony” for staff and family members at the EMS Millersville Station, 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville, on May 17. Heritage Monuments and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home donated a granite monument including personalized photo and name remembrances of seven fallen EMS heroes from Lancaster County. Those remembered are Kathy Wiley (1953-2011), Polly Oakes (19652014), Craig Hohman (1956-2013), Larry Joe (1951-2014), Bob Thompson (1955-2014), Bob Hinkle (1954-2015) and Bobbie Stewart (1933-2017). Previously, there were individual bricks engraved with the names and birth and death dates of the seven individuals. Marisa Seubert, director of marketing and development at Lancaster EMS, contacted Heritage Monuments and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home last year. “The memorial garden needed a refresh and a more personal touch,” stated Seubert. “The funeral home generously donated the stone and with photos of the fallen EMS heroes. We’re very thankful for this partnership with the funeral home, and we’re very fortunate to be able to go over to the garden and remember these folks.” First Responders Children’s Foundation provided box lunches from Firehouse Subs for the attendees, and pastor Chris Lautsbaugh of Worship Center provided the invocation. “It really means a lot to me just to have been part of this project,” said Kathy Snyder from Heritage Monuments. “Fortunately, I have never needed a first responder, but you never know if you will, but it’s important to show your appreciation for everything they do for the whole community.”
