Rotary Club, Scouts Take On Service Project

The Cycle Of Supporting: Hogs And Heroes To Host Bike-A-Thon BY COURTNEY MENGEL

he Hogs and Heroes Foundation Inc. Pennsylvania Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 Juniors will hold its first Juniors Bike-a-thon. Hogs and Heroes is a national foundation with the mission to sponsor and fundraise for the United States military and first responders. Proceeds from the event will benefit Angels of America’s Fallen, a nonprofit organization that encourages and funds activities for the children of fallen firefighters, military personnel, and members of law enforcement. Between grief counseling, scholarships, and more, Angels of America’s Fallen supports the children all year, every year until adulthood. There will be two opportunities to attend the Bike-a-thon. The first Bikea-thon will occur on Saturday, June 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. The second Bike-athon will take place on Sunday, June 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cousler Park, 1060 Church Road, York. Both bike routes will be on walking trails, which are closed off to vehicular traffic. During the event, participants will ride for an hour to raise money. Anyone under the age of 18 can participate in the Bike-a-thon, and the public is encouraged to attend. Participants are required to wear their own helmets and bring their own bicycles. There will be same-day registration, but preregistration can be completed online at http://bit.ly/junior bikeathon. Participants will receive T-shirts, and prizes will be awarded for the most laps completed and the most money raised. “This is a great chance to get out, be active, and for people to meet the Hogs and Heroes family because that’s what we are … a family,” stated Theresa Draeger, Pennsylvania state IT officer for the Hogs and Heroes Foundation. Sponsorships are available. For more information about Hogs and Heroes, visit www.hogsheroes foundation.com.

The Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club was joined by Boy Scouts from Troop 267 in Silver Spring on May 15 to perform a service project under the direction of West Hempfield Township officials. The project, funded jointly by the Rotary Club and a grant from Rotary District 7390, sought to discourage the practice of putting hazardous waste into storm water drains in residential areas. Six Rotary Club members joined several Scouts and Scout leaders to install 150 storm water drain markers bearing the slogan “Only rain should go down the drain.” Markers were installed in areas within the watersheds of the Little Conestoga Creek, Strickler Run, and Chiques Creek. In addition, grant money was used to install dog waste stations at Murry Park and the township office property. See Rotary Club pg 3

Matthew 25:40 emphasizes the importance of caring for “the least of these,” teaching that everyone deserves compassion. At Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, the least will be getting the most due to a capital campaign designed to continue to provide quality care and support to seniors. “In honor of Mount Hope’s 50th anniversary in June 2019, Mount Hope launched a capital campaign to address a dated facility that needs tender loving care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “We reached our halfway point with total donations and pledges coming in at just over $500,000. We are well on our way to the $1 million goal.” Help is still needed to reach the goal, she stated, which will allow the facility to upgrade its roof and parking lot area; improve public restrooms; update nursing stations and the therapy room; and renovate resident common gathering areas, such as two lounges and the dining hall. So far, 14 resident rooms have been renovated, with 29 still to be updated. Mount Hope has a mission of providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay, Wilson noted, adding that the capital campaign will help the facility continue to fulfill this mission, as much of the facility has not been updated since the home was built in the late 1960s. “The capital cam-

paign will allow the facility to make improvements to continue to provide quality care,” Wilson said. “Every person deserves a dignified, well-maintained place to live. Contributing to the capital campaign will allow the home to continue to provide this care.” As the capital campaign continues, the public is invited to a virtual celebration, “Upon This Firm Foundation … Continuing Our Vision,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16. A Zoom link will be available for the celebration at Mount Hope’s website beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the day of the event. Wilson said the celebration will include up-to-date information, personal testimonies of the care Mount Hope provides, an invitation and challenge to participate with a financial response and a vision for the future. “A challenge will be given to those participating in the virtual campaign celebration on how they may see themselves joining with Mt. Hope to ensure that this mission continues strong,” she stated. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to provide quality care for the long-term future.” Wilson emphasized that Mount Hope provides a unique service. “There is an abundance of long-term care facilities and retirement communities in Lancaster County and surrounding areas for seniors in need of nursing care to live. Youth Conservation School Posted

LCHS Honored For Music Program Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) recently received the 2021 SupportMusic Merit Award through the Best Communities for Music Education program. This designation from the NAMM Foundation is awarded to individual private schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. The award highlights that LCHS is a leader in providing funding, music class participation opportunities, graduation requirements in the arts, instructional time, and overall support for the music program. LCHS is one of just 80 private schools in the country to receive this distinction. Additionally, the Fine and Performing Arts Department has been recognized by the Middle States Association with the Music Program of Distinction Award.

The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place on Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. Open to students ages 14 to 16, this summer field school is made possible through a 43year-old partnership between the Lancaster County Conservation District and local sportsmen’s clubs. The program focuses on outdoor activities and conservation of natural

resources. This year, the school will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person learning. Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience, and opportunities to hone their communication skills. Topics will include stream restoration, biodiversity, macroinvertebrates, forestry, canoeing, and wildlife management. Students will have opportunities

to meet professionals in various environmental and conservation-related fields and discuss career options. The conservation school will also include a virtual visit with author Natalie Warren. A lifelong paddler and river enthusiast, Warren was one of the first two women to paddle from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in 2011. Her new book is “Hudson Bay Bound.” Warren will share stories from the more than 2,000-mile journey when she meets the students. “Hudson Bay Bound” is available from the Lancaster County Library System and for purchase from local bookstores. For more information and the application and to register, visit www.lancaster conservation.org. To receive a paper application, contact the Conservation District at 717299-5361, ext. 5. Applications are due by Wednesday, June 23, and there is a registration fee. Remaining tuition is provided by Lancaster County sportsmen’s clubs and community organizations.

back to beat us in five - you can’t get any closer than that.” The day prior to this match, Vogel had stated, “We beat them 17-15 in the final set. You cannot get any tighter than that. “They are a very skilled team at every position,” he added. “They are also tall like us.” Speaking of comebacks, the Knights (22-2) rebounded from a 25-22 setback to win the next two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22 before finishing on the short end of the 25-20 final in the fourth set. Senior Ryan Givens recorded 19 kills and six blocks while Gerry Gallagher poured in 11 kills and registered three digs. Dante Kenner and Grant Lorelli had six and five kills, respectively. Keener also put up five blocks and two digs. Lorelli finished with eight digs and a block. Adam Gimeson, Mason Orth (12 digs) and Caden Bonner each served one ace.

“Ryan Givens had some phenomenal matches this year,” Vogel said of the senior he will be losing as Givens heads to Messiah University. Also graduating and moving on will be Lorelli. Asked to comment on the expected returning players, Vogel pointed to, “Dante Keener, who was our middle this year, Mason Orth, who’s our libero and Caden Bonner, our setter. Dante plays three rotations. There’s Ethan Earhart, who is 6-foot-4. Aiden Beiler a sophomore, will move into an outside hitting position.” What else carries into next season for Hempfield? “It’s a winning culture,” Vogel remarked. “You build on that. The kids expect it. We have had this winning culture for a long time. The team I had this year overachieved. We played against a team of skilled players. You have to teach your kids to rise to the occasion and most

Postcard Club To Gather The Lancaster County Postcard Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 21, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Club member Bud Heim will present “Reading Rutherford Yards of Harrisburg and Train

of the season, they did. I’m happy for what the kids accomplished.” The Rams’ victory over Hempfield ended the Knights’ 19-match win streak. “ We didn’t make it to states,” Vogel said. “When you lose like this - deep into the season - it’s tough. We lost one match early in the season, so our kids are not used to losing. The season ended abruptly for us.” The Rams moved on to face North Allegheny in the championship match scheduled at Penn State Recreational Building. The Tigers, who were 3-0 winners over Central York in the 2019 finals, are technically the defending champs as the spring schedule for sports in the Commonwealth was wiped out due to the Coronavirus pandemic last year. The Hempfield squad played another tough match to reach the state semis. On Saturday, June 5, they defeat-

ed Emmaus in the quarterfinal round by a 3-0 score at Schuylkill Valley High School in Leesport. “Emmaus served impressively,” said Vogel. “They were very similar to the Palmyra team we played in districts. They had us by six or seven points in the first set.” Hempfield came back to win that set 25-23. The Knights went on to win two more close sets, 25-21 and 25-23. Givens had 17 kills and three aces in the win. Gallagher came through with two blocks while Orth led the team in digs with 16. “Gerry Gallagher has been coming on,” Vogel stated. “He helps take a little bit off Givens. He is one of our primary passers and we need that. That is critical in volleyball. He’s also not just an offensive threat, he plays respectable defense and is a decent blocker. He’s big - 6foot-4.”

The Black Knights could almost taste the victory. The Hempfield boys’ volleyball team took a 2-1 lead in its PIAA Class 3A state semifinals match against Central Dauphin on Tuesday evening at Central York High School, looking for a trip back to the state finals. In the fourth set the Knights held a 14-10 lead over Central Dauphin - a team they had edged 3-2 in the District Three 3A semis on CD’s home court back on May 26. The Rams battled back

and won 25-20, forcing a tiebreaker set. “We were up by four points in the fourth set; we were up 9-5 in the fifth set,” Mike Vogel, the Hempfield coach explained. “We only scored three more points to their 10. We had our opportunities and that’s probably the toughest part.” Central Dauphin (21-2) was led by Tyler McConnell, who poured in 22 kills. Looking back to the District semis and how the Knights came from behind to win 3-2, Vogel simply said, “We beat them in five and they came
