Friendship Fest To Incorporate Preschool Party By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When the congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC) moved into its new building at 2340 State St., East Petersburg, in 1968, one of the first things it did was launch an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group. Then, at pastor George Geisler’s behest, the church started a nursery school. While other ministries have come and gone during the past half-century, both the AA group and Trinity Preschool are still thriving. “We’re a place for people to come and find support and a place for families and children to learn and grow,” commented the Rev. Dr. Chris Rankin. The preschool opened with 15 students, and Geisler’s wife, Janice, was the first teacher. At the time, it was one of only three nursery schools in the
area, Rankin reported. Over the years, enrollment increased, reaching a high of 90 in 1990. Currently, 63 children are registered for the 2019-20 school year. Trinity Preschool offers morning classes for youngsters ages 2 through 5, as well as afternoon classes for 4- and 5-year-olds. Rankin and preschool director Sean McKelvey hope that families that have been involved with the school in the past five decades will attend a celebration of the preschool’s 50th anniversary that will be held in conjunction with Trinity UCC’s fifth annual Friendship Fest on Sunday, July 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. Anyone else who would like to enjoy food, fun, and entertainment is also invited to attend the event. Admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted. See Trinity Preschool pg 8

Tomato Festival from pg 1 When Goodwill merged with three other Manor Township fire companies to become Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR) in 2011, the support group was created. As an auxiliary to the new entity, BRSG coordinates Blue Rock apparel for BRFR members, hosts annual banquets, and contributes to the purchases of new apparatus. It also hosts the Tomato Festival. “We do it for the community,” said Dick Schock, who shares festival co-chair duties with Carl Miller and Bob Howell. “If we stopped, the community would kick up a fuss.” While not much about the Tomato Festival has changed over the years - if it is not broken, why fix it? - a slight change has been made for this year’s event, which will be held on Saturdays, July 13 and 20, at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road. For the first time, the kitchen will open at 3 p.m., a full two hours before the carnival games and live music kick off. “They’re here at 3 o’clock anyway,” Schock remarked. “We’re hoping to eliminate the lines,” Miller explained. Folks traditionally queue up for tomato sandwiches and, in recent years, BLTs. In 2017, the BRSG sold 3,000 bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches during the two days of the festival. Last year’s numbers were down because the first night had a lot of rain and not as many folks came out. “We covered our expenses the last night,” Schock said. “If it rains, we will sell food.” The two sandwiches feature
Washington Boro tomatoes grown by The Tomato Barn. Typically, the festival kitchen goes through 250 pounds of tomatoes a night. This year’s variety will be popular local favorite Jet Star, said Tomato Barn co-owner Tyler Rohrer. The past few years, the festival featured a different variety because the Jet Stars were not ready early enough. Warmer weather in March and April this year have Jet Stars on schedule to be ripe for the festival, Rohrer said. Festival attendees may also purchase whole Jet Star tomatoes at the festival.
In addition to the tomatobased sandwiches, the festival will sell sausage sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, chicken corn soup, fries, roasted corn, cotton candy, popcorn, funnel cakes, Italian ice, soft-serve ice cream, and plenty of fruit and cake. The kitchen will close at 9 p.m., although sales tend to die down around 8 p.m., the co-chairs noted. The festival will offer a variety of carnival games, a bounce house, and a barrel train. There will be opportunities to enter a drawing for a pair of 10-foot kayaks, a big screen television,

an electronic tablet, or $100 cash prizes. Country band Borderline will perform on July 13, and Stu Huggens and the Black Hats will play on July 20. Both BRFR and the BRSG are staffed by volunteers. Additional help is needed to make the Tomato Festival a success. Folks may assist in the kitchen or with the games. Anyone who is interested may call Schock at 717951-6411 and leave a message. To learn more about the Tomato Festival, folks may find “ Washington Boro Tomato Festival to benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue” on Facebook.

In addition to developing new skills, Scholz and Byers hope that participants will gain an appreciation for the Susquehanna River and become more comfortable on the water - perhaps making them lifelong river connoisseurs. “We find that kids who do get out on the water (at a younger age) are more likely to get back out there again,” Scholz remarked. School Holds Shakespeare Festival For the past 25 years, Dayspring Christian Academy has ended the school year with a Shakespeare Festival. This year, students studied Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet. The festival launches during Shakespeare Days when Upper School students gather for a reading and presentation of the play. Then students spend the next several days taking part in electives that demonstrate a knowledge of the play. On the last day of school, students present their projects for each other as well as families and guests during the Shakespeare Festival. This year’s electives included “Robo Romeo, where students developed computer programs that enabled robots to perform short segments of the play. In another elective called “Songs of Love, a
Dayspring Christian Academy students created and presented a Shakespeare Festival project titled “Songs of Love, where they performed songs and played instruments to demonstrate the love between the characters Romeo and Juliet. Performing their songs are (from left) music teacher Lindsey Stauffer, and sixth-graders Grace Stoltzfus, Maya Romanyuk, Max Freed, and Aaron Keeney. group of middle school students performed songs on piano, in voice, on the recorder, and on xylophones to demonstrate the love that existed between the characters Romeo and Juliet. Students created artwork relevant to the play,
developed a puppet show adaptation, and crafted a “Love is the Key escape room. Students in developmental kindergarten through 11th grade participate in the electives, and the festival rotates among seven of Shakespeare’s plays each year.

from 4 to 5 p.m. Face painting will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. A cake walk, which McKelvey described as “musical chairs with cake, will also take place. A bounce house will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. To close out the event, beginning at 6 p.m., Fred “Phredd McNaughton will perform familyfriendly songs while accompanying himself with a ukulele. Additionally, during the event, the church building will be open. McKelvey and the rest of the preschool staff members plan to be on hand . McKelvey has served as preschool director for two years. Jill LaVenice is the newest teacher; she attended Trinity Preschool as a child. Betty Cox, who is an assistant with the two- and three-day classes, is the longest-serving staff member, with 32 years. “My son attended, so I knew it was a good place, Cox said of her decision to work at the preschool. “It’s fun to work with children and see them grow. They have fun in learning, they make friendships, and they feel good and confident. Trinity Preschool uses playbased curricula, and while there are certainly teacher-directed activities, there are also plenty of opportunities for independent play and learning. The school works with the Hempfield School District to ensure that students are prepared to enter kindergarten, or as McKelvey called it, “big kids’ school. He noted that calling elementary school “real school undermines the legitimacy of preschool and the education students receive there. At Trinity Preschool, students are guided to develop physically, emotionally, and socially. They learn the basics of critical thinking, stimulate language development, begin to self-regulate, and build a foundation for future learning. Trinity Preschool is an outreach commission of Trinity UCC, but it is not faith-based, which Rankin noted has increased the diversity of the attendees. There are two exceptions: Grace is said at meals to model gratitude, and Rankin gives a lesson on the story of Christmas in December. For more information about Trinity Preschool, readers may email McKelvey at preschool@ trinityeastpete.org. Folks with questions about Friendship Fest may call the church office at 717-569-1632.

Local Youths Graduate From Program The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 15th annual Celebration of Achievement on June 2 in the Johnston Auditorium of the Lancaster Masonic Center. A total of 13 children graduated from the program. Heather Hinkel, director of the center, addressed the students and praised their work ethics. Faith Irwin and Sara Stinchcomb, who had previously graduated from the program, also addressed the students and shared their experiences of overcoming dyslexia as they graduated high school and began the next leg of their journey into college. Each graduate was given an keepsake autograph bear, as the bear is the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.’s mascot. Students thanked their tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of
the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary school through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The OrtonGillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost
to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers are available at http://childrens dyslexiacenteroflancaster.org or by searching for “Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers may call 717481-5680 or email cdclancaster pa@gmail.com for information about the center.
