In Booster Club will hold its addition to the hole-in-one contest ninth annual golf tournament reward, a cash prize will be awarded to on Friday, Aug. 5, at Four Seasons first, second and third places. Dinner Golf Club, 949 Church St., Lanwill be hosted at Blue Collar, which is disville. The event is rain-or-shine located at Four Seasons. The Hempfield Basketball Booster Club is comprised of volunteers who share a goal of assisting with the costs necessary to play on the teams. Throughout the year, the needs of the teams and requirements for orchestrating various games produce several costs that need to be covered. These can include travel expenses, referee fees, purchases of player uniforms and equipment, summer league fees and many other necessary overheads. The funds raised and used to cover these costs play a vital role for the team and players; the golf tournament directly aids in making sure the costs are all covered so the teams can function. The money raised from the event even supports programs beyond the high school teams, with the junior varsity and summer leagues benefiting directly as well. “This is the No. 1 fundraiser for the club,” explained parent volunteer and former boys booster blub president Daren Moffat. “It’s a great day to go out and have some fun while you support the teams.” The club has placed a strong emphasis on the local community aspect of the event, electing to host it again at Four Seasons Golf Club this year. There are multiple sponsorship opportunities available for the tournament for those who wish to get directly involved. The deadline for registration is Friday, July 29, but same-day registration will also be accepted. For more information, contact Danny Walck at danny_walck@hempfieldsd.org Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Hempfield are supported direct- or the girls’ booster club at ly by the annual golf tournament. hempfieldgirlsbball@gmail.com. Photographic Memories Volunteers Help Share Camp Experiences With Families BY ANN MEAD ASH
In the early days of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21, the summer camp program served 25 or fewer campers. When Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, wanted parents to see pictures of what the children did at camp, she simply
asked the nurse to take photos. Staff and campers worked together to create a memory book for each child to take home. “Once we got big (serving more than 200 campers), the nurse didn’t have the time (to take photos),” recalled Paskoff. Instead, Paskoff turned to community members and asked them to help. “We want the community to see our kids,” said Paskoff. “A lot of people think kids See Aaron’s Acres pg 2

They say, ‘I didn’t expect (campers) to get in the water or on the horses.’” In the summer of 2019, more than 100 community volunteers visited during the six weeks of camp to take photos. On June 21, three Fulton Bank employees joined Paskoff and more than 90 campers at Aaron’s Acres’ location at the New Holland Community Memorial Park. Jess Marzella, who works with the Small Business Administration in Pottstown, and Trish Mountain and Melissa Schaeffer, who work at the Penn Square Fulton location in Lancaster, all donated their time to take photos of the campers. The three women had responded to an email from Fulton coordinator Karen Landis. Marzella has a daughter with special needs,

and she has been volunteering with the Best Buddies program at her daughter’s school for several years. Her sensitivity in this area led her to volunteer. Mountain, who lives in Mountville, said that she has volunteered with Aaron’s Acres for three years and with the Special Olympics for several years. She noted that her career is in banking, but she has a degree in therapeutic recreation and she enjoys helping out. Schaeffer, of Washington Boro, had volunteered with Aaron’s Acres when the camp was in Manheim. She said that she had a niece with special needs who has passed away. “She was a delight in our lives,” she recalled, adding, “It’s amazing to watch these kids have such a great time with this
experience.” Two days into camp at a new location in New Holland, Paskoff was pleased with the results of moving the six-week summer program. “Yesterday did not feel like the first day,” she said. “ We are in our new location. Not one kid had a problem with the transition.” Paskoff noted that the recognizable yellow Tshirts of all camp staff members, the daily schedule, and the intentional routine of the camp days have helped to make the change to a new place easier. Paskoff noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. Last year, the center enrolled about 25 children, which was fewer than in previous years due to a lack of staffing and funding. “It’s been challenging raising funds since before COVID,” said Brown. The center operates on a small budget that is sustained primarily through local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the Board of Governors that oversees the program. “It costs over $6,000 annually per child, and it’s more difficult to raise that kind of funding anymore,” Brown noted. The center generally has a waitlist of about 20 children, and it usually takes one to two years before an opening is available. The center also offers free training for adults to receive certification as dyslexia practitioners. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual W. Scott

Heather Brown, director of the center, introduced Faith Irwin, a former student of the program, to address the graduates. Irwin, who attended the center from 2007 to 2010, is now set to graduate from Millersville University in December. She shared strategies with the graduates on how to overcome struggles associated with dyslexia and some of the strategies she has utilized to help her be successful. Each graduate was given an autograph bear, the mascot adopted by the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc., as a keepsake. Students presented words of thanks to their tutors and the Board of Governors for the services they received.
