Hempfield graduates attend national leadership conference

FromJune 20 to 23, students from across the country traveled to Atlanta for the 2023 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference. The annual event is designed to offer students, teachers and entrepreneurs an opportunity to sharpen their skills in a variety of career paths and to display their talents among peers.

Allyson Caddick and Jonny Martinez, recent Hempfield High School graduates, attended the conference with a group of fellow students from Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (CTC). Caddick and Martinez competed in the health knowledge bowl competition during the event with their teammates, Elayna Burkholder and Zackary Lipold.

The health module of the competition was structured similarly to a quiz bowl; the students were asked a series of questions and wrote down their answers to accrue points for accuracy. The competition concluded after two rounds of questions.

Caddick attended Lancaster County CTC during her senior year through Hempfield’s dual enrollment program. She met her teammates in the Advanced Health Careers class, where they primarily focused on learning medical terminology and basic health care practices. “(The competition) was a fun way to help us continue our learning and to expand on what we were taught in class,” Caddick said.

Caddick and her group signed up for the competition in December 2022 after being encouraged to register by one of their advisers at See Leadership conference pg 5

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum reinvents history

There’s ancient history. There’s modern history.

And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving.

A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft

demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.

“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these See Landis Valley pg 2

different living history demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture

and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”

Lancaster County CTC. The students prepared by convening for regular group study sessions, where they reviewed medical terms from their textbooks and completed quizzes. Caddick said that in addition to helping her retain the material from her class, attending the conference gave her an opportunity to gain more perspective on the career she plans to pursue. “It made me start thinking about what I’m going to do with what I’m learning,” Caddick added. “It helped me get into a more professional mindset.”

Caddick plans to attend the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences in the fall to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She has known for many years that she wanted to become a nurse, and she

Girls on the Run

refined her goal in high school to focus on working in labor and delivery. After college, Caddick hopes to acquire a master’s degree in nursing and become a midwife. “I love kids and being around babies, so I thought that becoming a midwife would be perfect for me,” Caddick said. Although Caddick has her sights set on studying nursing and becoming a midwife, the conference allowed her to see the diversity of the medical field and broaden her perspective. “That perspective is so helpful as I go into college. Up until that point, I had only been around people who are studying the same things as me,” Caddick said. “I was able to learn how to interact with peers in a professional environment.”

Wounded Warrior Ride planned

In addition, Girls on the Run recently assigned new positions and responsibilities to employees Jennifer West and Kylie Homan.

“While Girls on the Run has two seasons, it is a year-round effort to ensure the success of each season,” said West, GOTR’s new executive director. “As a staff, it’s our responsibility to set up our coaches for success. Then it all starts again. We’re always thinking of how we can engage the community more. We know how important it is for girls to have a safe place to land.”

Registration for GOTR’s fall campaign will run from Thursday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Sept. 15. The season will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 19, with GOTR’s inclusive and celebratory 5K run at Millersville University.

“My job is to ensure our

program is up and running so we can serve as many girls in the county as possible,” said Homan, GOTR’s new program director. “It’s about establishing our coaches so they can facilitate the program. Running is a component of our program, not a requirement. In each of the lessons, there are physical activity or games. We are encouraging girls to keep moving, based on the ability they bring each day.”

GOTR officials hope to make their program available through every school district in Lancaster County, an initiative that will depend upon the availability of volunteer coaches. There is a cost associated with the program, and financial aid is available.

In the spring, GOTR involved 900 Lancaster County girls, thanks in part to the time

Art studio to exhibit paintings

This summer, Mulberry Art Studios will revisit one of its signature artists and showcase more artworks of the late Lewis Lanza Rudolph. Rudolph was such a prolific artist in his day that even though Mulberry has held three exhibitions of his works over the past few years, the pieces in the upcoming exhibit will all be new to the

public. The exhibit will have opening receptions during First Fridays, Aug. 4 and Sept. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Rudolph began painting in 1966 and continued into the late 1990s, mostly painting in obscurity. He lived his entire life in his childhood home in Red Bank, N.J., and spent his free time alone, walking the

and effort committed by 380 volunteer coaches.

“Because they’re all volunteer coaches, it’s almost like starting fresh each season,” said West. “We rely on coaches coming back to coach the girls. We’re looking for positive role models to show kindness and compassion to the girls.”

“We are really focusing on reaching out to the community for coaches of all shapes, sizes and ethnicity,” added West. “It’s really important for the girls to look into the coaches and see themselves. There aren’t really restrictions on who can be a coach, except that you must be in at least the ninth grade.”

West, who co-founded the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of Girls on the Run in 2009, replaced Katie Sandoe as the program’s executive director. This past spring, GOTR served

boardwalks of Asbury Park to Belmar, N.J., and painting in his basement. He died in 2012 during valve replacement surgery.

Rudolph’s work is predominately abstract, created in oils on engineered wood with occasional added paper and wax layering. He was favorably critiqued by The New York Times during the time he spent showing his work in New York City and northern New Jersey

its 20,000th participant.

“We knew Lancaster County was going to be so accepting of the program,” said West. “Girls on the Run is about conflict resolution, making good choices, being a good friend. Lancaster is the perfect spot for Girls on the Run, but we do rely on the community’s support.”
