Scouting For Members “How do you put Scouting in a box?” mused Nina Evans, assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 64. “We do lots of cool stuff, and we do stuff we don’t expect to do.” The troop had planned to host a recruitment event in August but has opted instead to directly invite interested youths to join the troop. The minimum age to join is 11 or entering sixth grade this fall. Scouting memberships conclude at age 18. The maximum age limit is approaching for many of Troop 64’s 20 members. “We’re trying to get some new Scouts in our group because the boys are getting older,” Nina said. Nina and her husband, Pat, who serves as the troop’s Scoutmaster, are committed to Scouting because of the

positive impact it makes on Scouts and those around them. “It allows youths to be outdoors learning survival skills, appreciating and conserving their natural surroundings, and gives them new experiences, leadership skills, and involvement in their community,” Nina explained. “We’re just trying to help make great community leaders - people who care about the Earth and their communities.” Troop 64 has been developing leaders for almost a half-century. It was chartered in 1971 and will mark its 50th anniversary next year. Through the decades, Troop 64 has developed a robust calendar of activities, which include weekly meetings, monthly campouts, and holiday events. The troop hosts a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in March and Breakfast With Santa in December and participates in several See Troop 64 pg 4

25 Years (And More) Of Chicken Barbecue By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce will hold its 25th annual chicken barbecue event on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rear of the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. “It’s actually been longer than 25 years, but it’s been that long since they started keeping track,” Chamber coordinator Kerry Meyers said. “One of the first years, it poured down rain. The volunteers absolutely got drenched. That’s when we introduced the tent.” No matter the weather, the chicken barbecue sale has continued. Last year’s event offered 1,250 meals. This year, 1,000 meals will be prepared, and each See Chicken Barbecue pg 6

Some people hear the word ‘thrift’ and think of a small, musty, dingy presentation,” Hauer pointed out. “Our hallmark is that we want to be clean and bright and we want to smell good. When you come into our store, you shop and don’t realize it’s a thrift store until you look at the receipt when you check out.” CommunityAid - Lancaster is only one of the organization’s thrift store locations. Other stores are in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, Hanover, York, and Selinsgrove. “We have given away $15.3 million to 700-plus churches, charities, and first responders since 2009,” Hauer reported. “We have the largest thrift store on the East Coast in Selinsgrove, a former department store, which is about 56,000 square feet of retail. You can spend about three hours shopping. That store is massive.” The organization offers both full- and part-time employment for local workers at a competitive wage. “We want to make sure that this should be an

All proceeds benefit local charities. “Our mission is to fund local churches, charities, and first responders; to provide affordable or free clothing to families in need; and to provide quality, good-paying jobs in the community,” said Bob Hauer, marketing director. Those who visit the Lancaster store will find neat rows of clothing sorted by size and gender as well as color. All clothing has been donated by the community. “When our processing team goes through and selects the clothing that goes out (on the sales floor), we try to keep a high standard,” said Hauer. “These are items that people want to buy. We hang them in a way that presents them attractively, but we are really quality-driven overall. It is good-quality stuff.” Repeat visits are encouraged, since new items are put on display daily. “We put out on average 3,500 new-view items on our sales floor every single day. People come in looking for a great deal and they find it,” said Hauer. “Our tasks are to replace that item on the rack. It’s a wonderful challenge. It does no good for

The advent of summer typically coincides with an increase of bicyclists on the roads. For some riders, cycling is a form of transportation. For others, it is a mode of relaxation and recreation. For everyone, however, safety is paramount. Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux listed two overarching principles for safe riding: wear a helmet and behave like a vehicle. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) requires anyone under the age of 12 to wear a helmet, whether they are operating the bicycle or participating as a passenger on a bike or a bike-pulled trailer. PennDOT does not mandate helmets for riders age 12 and older, but it strongly recommends that everyone wears a helmet. Mullineaux agreed, saying, “Wear a helmet. They do help an enormous amount. I’m 70 years old, and I wear a helmet every time I ride.” Although helmets are regulated for children, the age at which youngsters may ride on the road is not. Instead, that privilege depends on the training and the skill level of the individual rider. Some area school districts provide education to middle-grade students to encourage them to ride bicycles to school. Regardless of age, behaving like a vehicle while riding a bicycle might not be intuitive, but it is worth practicing. According to Mullineaux, in Pennsylvania, cyclists have the right to ride wherever they think it is safe to do so, with the exclusion of riding against traffic. “Always ride with traffic. Always,” Mullineaux stressed. Pedestrians walk against traffic because they can quickly move to the side of the road when encountering oncoming vehicles. “If you’re riding a bicycle, you don’t have time to get over when you see a car coming toward you,” Mullineaux said. When Mullineaux learned to ride on the road, he was taught to put his wheels on the white fog line or stay as far to the edge of the road surface in the absence of the line. However, he later learned that doing so makes cyclists less visible to automobile drivers, it makes it tempting for drivers to try to squeeze by a bicycle, and there is

nowhere to go if an animal runs in front of the bike or the road contains an obstacle. “I like the shoulder, but if you don’t have a shoulder to ride on, the next safest place is to have your wheels in the same place as the right-hand tires of an automobile,” Mullineaux said. “(That way), in order for them to pass you, they must do a clean pass.” Mullineaux related that he once encountered a person at a safety presentation who was upset that cyclists were taking up part of a lane while ascending a hill. He asked the individual how they would have behaved if the cyclist had instead been a piece of heavy equipment, emphasizing that it is important to give cyclists the same respect. On one-way streets, Mullineaux regularly rides in the middle of a lane because vehicles can safely pass him in the adjacent lane. For single-lane roundabouts, which have been slowly cropping up in Lancaster County, cyclists should take the lane. Motorists may have to spend a few extra seconds getting through the roundabout, but it is worth it to ensure everyone’s safety. To make left-hand turns on a two-way street, Mullineaux said that he gets close to the double yellow lines as soon as it is safe to do so and signals a turn. “If a car comes up behind me (and also plans to turn), they have to wait for me,” he remarked. Bicycle lanes are a prominent feature on some Lancaster city streets. On Walnut Street, most of the bike lane is against the sidewalk and protected from the left lane of traffic by a row of parking spaces. Anyone seated on the left side of parked vehicles must look to the lane behind their vehicle to ensure they do not open their doors into a cyclist’s path. Mullineaux shared that driver’s education courses are now teaching the Dutch Reach to open doors. Popularized by the Netherlands, where bicycles outnumber residents, the Dutch Reach is so named because a seated individual crosses their body with their opposite hand to open their car door. Doing so turns the individual’s body so it is more likely they see the lane toward the rear of the vehicle and thus spot any approaching cyclists. On rural routes, cyclists may encounter

Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux encourages cyclists to wear helmets and behave like vehicles to be safe on the road. horse-drawn carriages. Bicycles are almost always faster, although Mullineaux said he has been known to draft behind a buggy in the presence of a tailwind. To safely pass a horse-drawn vehicle, cyclists may ride close to the center line, making sure no drivers are coming toward them. Then, once they are well past the horse, riders may return to their original position on the road. “I sometimes wave (when passing), especially if there are kids in the back,” Mullineaux

said. He offered a word of caution about sharing the road with horse-drawn conveyances, noting, “If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to come upon a buggy unawares.” The Lancaster Bicycle Club offers educational resources and training on bike safety. food drives. In May, troop members assist with the Sertoma chicken barbecue event at Long’s Park. “They actually help set the whole thing up, then sleep overnight in the park,” Nina said. “They’re up at 3 a.m. for the lighting of the (barbecue) pits, and they help put chicken in bags and put the meals in the boxes.” Nina noted that this is the first year that Troop 64 has not been involved with the sale because it was canceled. “Love of country” is an important tenet of Scouting, and Troop 64 practices patriotism by visiting veterans’ burial sites and placing flags for Memorial Day and wreaths for Christmas. In May, Troop 64 partners with Troop 16 and Troop 35 to place flags in five cemeteries in Lancaster city, East Lampeter Township, and Columbia. The tradition of laying wreaths began several years ago with Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) and has expanded to include cemeteries in Salunga and Landisville. Troop 64 also participates in the Flags Up ceremony in May and Flags Down ceremony in November at IGNC. While the patriotic activities are solemn occasions, Troop 64 also makes time for fun and challenges. Troop members typically attend Scout camps every summer and High Adventure camps as far away as New Mexico and Canada on alternating years. The troop’s monthly campouts are stepped up to twice a month in August through December. “They like winter camping,” Nina commented. See Troop 64 pg 6

Susquehanna National Heritage Area in partnership with the Borough of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Committee has launched a 2020 Columbia Summer Bucket List. The list provides residents and visitors with suggestions of more than 35 activities featuring Columbia organizations, businesses and landmarks. The Columbia Summer Bucket List focuses on free and low-cost activities that are readily available and safe during the pandemic. Participants may discover new parts of town, view murals, and engage in silly activities. For example, the list encourages people to make a train noise at the Columbia & Reading Railroad Car at Manor and Fourth streets. Participants may also dive into

Columbia’s history by visiting historic sites and markers like the Lincoln Highway marker on Chestnut Street and Zion Hill Cemetery. The initiative is also designed to support the Columbia business community. From a comic book store to gift shops, a variety of businesses are featured. Participants are also encouraged to try dishes at restaurants around town. Readers may download the list at www.susquehannaheritage.org/columbi a-summer-bucket-list-launched/ or www.columbiapa.net, or they may pick up a paper copy at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Columbia Crossing is open on Wednesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to track their efforts by taking photos of their Bucket List activities and sharing them to social media using #2020ColumbiaBucketList. They may complete a short form on the back of the list and return it Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. Those who complete at least 15 activities will receive a sticker. This vintagestyle crimson and gold vinyl sticker captures Columbia’s colors and historic Veterans Memorial Bridge. It is designed to be durable and weather resistant. People who complete at least 30 activities will earn the sticker as well as a voucher for a small ice cream cone at Hinkle’s Restaurant. Chicken Barbecue from pg 1 will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a whoopie pie, a roll, and a beverage. Half-chickens accompanied by a beverage will also be available. “We try to make sure monetary sponsorships cover the costs,” Meyers explained. “If you don’t sell out for any reason, you don’t want to eat a lot of that cost.” As the Chamber coordinator, Meyers has a unique insight into the health of Mount Joy-area businesses. Knowing that the shutdown has reduced incomes for most companies, she set a goal of $3,700 in sponsorships, half of what was generated last year. Previously, the lowest sponsor level was $100, but she added a $50 amount this year. “Only two jumped on that,” Meyers said. In fact, the response was nearly on par with last year. “I was just floored,” she commented. The financial backing of the event has allowed Meyers’ planning to focus on ensuring that volunteers and customers are safe during the event. The event has traditionally been offered as a hybrid drive-through and walk-up, and that will be true again this year. “Setup will be a bit different so that volunteers can effectively social distance, and they will wear masks,” Meyers said. She noted that an emphasis will be placed on limiting contact between volunteers and customers, and the pickup process can be entirely contactless if customers purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are available at Milanof-Schock Library; JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., Suite 1, Mount Joy. The Chamber office is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, but visitors should call the office at 717-653-0773 to ensure Meyers has not stepped out on an errand. Additionally, some Chamber members have tickets for sale and have posted signs at their locations. All presold tickets must be redeemed by 1 p.m. on Aug. 15. The proceeds from the barbecue will be used to support the Chamber and its activities, such as Music in the Park and visits with Santa Claus. The organization annually awards $4,500 in scholarships, with Donegal High School and The Janus School seniors among the recipients. Mount Joy residents, family members of Chamber members, and adults continuing their education are eligible to apply for the scholarships. The Chamber is a hub for local businesses and organizations and has more than 200 members. Living or working in Mount Joy is not required for membership. Until March this year, the Chamber held monthly luncheons and mixers and an annual banquet. While those events

Kime Earns Graduate Degree person. Members of the university community filmed short videos of encouragement, and each college produced a virtual livestream ceremony. Packages containing commemorative programs and other celebratory items were sent to graduates everywhere, and students who want to walk across a graduation stage in person will be able to do so at a future ceremony.

David Kime of Lancaster was among the more than 5,700 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who received degrees from University of Iowa this spring. A student in the Graduate College, Kime received a Master of Arts in film studies. During the pandemic, the university supported commencement celebrations despite being unable to host them in

have been suspended, the Chamber is continuing to create welcome bags for newcomers to Mount Joy, with each bag containing a directory of members and other goodies. The Chamber office is the official visitor’s center for the borough, and Chamber members may display their business cards and brochures there. Additionally, the Chamber sells Mount Joy Money gift certificates that can be used only at participating businesses. “It doesn’t cost them anything to participate, and it keeps all the dollars here in Mount Joy,” Meyers said, adding that $40,000 of certificates have been sold in the program’s 12 years. Since March, Meyers has checked in regularly with the other chambers of commerce in Lancaster County and the Economic Development Company. When Recovery Lancaster grants became available, Meyers and the other Chamber directors were the first to know, and they spread the word to their members. Meyers also tried to make phone calls to every Chamber member after the shutdown was announced. “My main goal was to help them,” she said. even powerwashed the latrines. “They’re building a raft right now to go down the creek in.” Building a raft from empty barrels and fallen trees was not on this year’s program schedule, but the troop took advantage of the opportunity afforded by meeting outdoors. Every meeting has included cooking on a campfire, and they have been able to practice skills like fishing, boating, fire starting, lashing/tying knots, and wilderness survival. “They like being outside,” Nina said. “They like to be together.” Anyone who would like to join Troop 64 may contact Pat at 717-6299254 or pevans2163@gmail.com.

Troop 64 is chartered by Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, and typically meets there every Tuesday evening. However, the church has been closed since the stay-at-home order was announced in March, so the troop suspended its meetings until it was safe to gather again. With precautions in place, the troop has met outdoors, sometimes at Camp Chiques, an aging Scout camp on Old Harrisburg Pike between Salunga and Mount Joy. “The boys have been doing improvement projects there,” Nina said, noting that the Scouts cleared out downed trees, cleared brush, and

Library Friends Plan Big Book Sale The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library will host their 65th annual Big Book Sale from Monday to Wednesday, Aug. 10 to 12, at the former Bon Ton site at Park City Center, 600 Park City Center, Lancaster. The book sale will be open on Aug. 10 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Aug. 12, items will be half-price. Payment with a credit card is available, parking is free, and the mall offers various on-site eating options. The sale will be in a new location this year, but the prices and the large inventory will remain the same. Customers will find more than 250,000 used books plus thousands of other items including vinyl records, sheet music, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs. Indi-

vidually priced books, including collectible and current fiction and nonfiction, will be for sale. The health and safety of customers and volunteers are of highest importance; therefore, the Friends are following Pennsylvania mandates. Face masks or face shields must be worn at all times, and social distancing will be in effect. Public restrooms and drinking fountains will not be available in the former Bon Ton site, but customers will find comfort facilities a few steps away inside the mall. Customers are asked to postpone their shopping trip if they are feeling unwell or if they have recently traveled to any states on the Pennsylvania travel quarantine list. Volunteers are sought for the sale. On Sunday, Aug. 9, between

11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., volunteers are needed to set up tables, put up signs, and unpack boxes of books. Volunteers should enter via the doors on the east side of the building, near TGI Friday’s. In addition, volunteers are needed on Aug. 12 beginning at 6 p.m. to help with cleanup. The Friends and volunteers must remove everything from the facility, including unsold books, tables, and signs. Volunteers must be over the age of 14. Volunteers do not need to sign up for a date and time. They may simply arrive when they are able to help. For more information and to express interest in volunteering, readers may call

717-898-1560 or email redrosebooks@aol.com. Masks or face shields are required for all volunteers. Mary Armstrong is again the chair of the book sale. Sixty-five years ago, the first Friends of Lancaster Public Library book sale raised $154. The Friends now raise nearly $200,000 annually by holding book sales, hosting fundraisers, and operating two used book stores. Proceeds from the Friends’ efforts directly benefit Lancaster Public Library and its patrons. For more information, readers may visit www.lancasterpublic library.org/library-friends.
