Community Invited To Meet The Knights Members of the public are invited to attend the 2019 Meet the Knights event on Friday, Aug. 16, where they may meet the Hempfield High School football team. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the high school’s football stadium, Mumma Drive, Landisville. A feature of the evening will be the recognition of teams and players from the Red Rose Midget Football League, which is expected to feed the high school rosters in coming years. Teams from Mountville, Hempfield, and East Petersburg will be recognized. Additionally, the cheerleaders from the midget teams will join with the Hempfield cheering squad to energize the crowd. During the evening, head football coach Ron Zeiber will share the coaching staff’s views on the progress and expectations of the varsity squad. This

year’s slogan is “Built Different,” which emphasizes the varying talents of the team in hopes of capitalizing on last year’s finish in the PIAA District 3 playoffs. “ We have a great bunch of kids and some good senior leadership,” Zeiber remarked. “We’re expecting some underclassmen from last year’s very successful freshman and JV teams to be ready to play varsity ball this season.” Zeiber noted that the football team recently placed first in Ruckus on the River, a seven-on-seven competition at Eastern York High School. The team is now working with the coaching staff to prepare for Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One competition. The Black Knights will play their season opener at home on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. against Dallastown. See Meet The Knights pg 4

The Hempfield Black Knights football team, celebrating after winning the Ruckus on the River competition, will be introduced to the public at the annual Meet the Knights event on Aug. 16 at the Hempfield High School football stadium.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will launch its fall season on Monday, Sept. 9. Approximately 900 girls ages 8 to 14 on more than 66 teams will participate in the 10-week program. The girls, from Lancaster and Lebanon counties, will learn about selfesteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s

The opening games will be organized by Jen McFarland Swope, who lives two hours away. She is filling in for her cousin, who is on vacation. “(Swope) said it’s kind of like a family reunion for her (to come back to the area where she grew up),” Haldeman related. Magician Erick Hershey of Landisville will perform a magic show for children from 5:20 to 5:50 p.m. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Attendees should bring their own meals and place settings. The picnic committee will provide ice cream, chips, and beverages. This year, the after-dinner schedule has been slightly adjusted. Door prize winners will be announced throughout the evening instead of only at the end. They will be interspersed with a children’s peanut scramble at 6:45 p.m., a cake walk at 7 p.m., the announcement of guessing game winners at health, consisting of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components. Hundreds of volunteer coaches facilitate the curriculum, and their efforts are sponsored by LOA Orthodontics. The program will prepare the girls for the Girls on the Run 5K, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Millersville University at 9 a.m. The event will be presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster. The girls will select running buddies to join and encourage them on the course. The 5K event is a fundraiser and is open to the community. Girls on the Run of Lancaster and Lebanon, part of Girls on the Run International, is a nonprofit, physical-activity based, positive youth development program. The character development organization combines the healthy activity of running with an interactive 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living. 7:45 p.m., and special games at 8:15 p.m. Local businesses have donated items for the door prize drawing, and everybody who attends will receive an entry. “We request a dollar, but it’s not required to get a ticket for the door prizes,” Cooper said. “We appreciate a donation. They help to keep the picnic going.” The committee also raises funds

through prize drawings for themed baskets. This year’s baskets are slated to include a back-to-school theme from the Landisville Church of God, another theme, and a surprise. The Salunga Community Picnic will be held rain or shine. Folks who would like to volunteer to help with the event may call Haldeman at 717-898-0989.
