Fundraiser will benefit field hockey booster club

TheHempfield Field Hockey

Booster Club will host its annual barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Meals will be able to purchase for a set price, and they will include chicken from Peters’ Barbecue, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and a drink. Cash and check payment will be preferred, but electronic payment options will also be available on the day of the fundraiser.

The proceeds from the barbecue will directly support the field hockey team by assisting with equipment costs and allowing the coaches to purchase meals for players when they travel for away games during the season. The funds will also be used to cover the cost of

team camps, offseason leagues at Spooky Nook and team bonding activities such as the banquet at the end of the season. In July, the players on the team traveled to Penn State University for a summer training camp.

The barbecue serves as the field hockey team’s largest annual fundraiser. It was previously held at Stauffers of Kissel Hill in Rohrerstown; this will be the first year that the booster club is holding the event at Hempfield recCenter.

The members of the booster club and coaches of the field hockey team seek to make the program an extension of its players’ high school experience by teaching them skills that will serve them in other areas. As field hockey players, students have a chance to learn teamwork and communication skills and gain experience in overcoming obstacles. The high school players also work with younger players in the offseason

Providing a support system for children

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to grow into

well-adjusted adults.

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”

With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through

Landisville resident selected as GOTR Coach of the Year

In May, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster continued its annual tradition of presenting the Ellen Shining Light Coach of the Year award to a coach within the program. This year, the award was given to Jessica Nealon of Landisville, who has been coaching since 2017.

Every year, students, coaches and community members nominate a coach for the award. Each nominee is then invited to a banquet at Lancaster Country Club to be honored, and the previous year’s award

adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few

months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

Adoption and foster care are just two of the services that COBYS provides.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely

our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide traumafocused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

For additional information on COBYS, go to www.cobys.org.

The 82nd annual Salunga Community Picnic will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. All residents of Salunga and surrounding communities are welcome to join.

GOTR coach

recipient announces the new award winner. The Coach of the Year is selected from the pool of nominees by a committee within GOTR Lancaster, which seeks out the nominee who most embodies the organization’s mission statement. “I was completely shocked that I had won,” Nealon said. In addition to the award, the Coach of the Year receives $500 to give to a nonprofit organization of his or her choice. As this year’s recipient, Nealon chose to give the amount to Power Packs Project, an organization that provides meals and recipes for students to take home for the weekend. Nealon chose to support Power Packs Project after seeing the direct impact that it has had in the School

District of Lancaster, where she teaches. Nealon is an instructional coach at Fulton Elementary School. “We have 25 families at my school that receive weekly meals and recipes from Power Packs,” Nealon said. “Not only are some of the girls on my team impacted, but also a lot of students in the district.”

In July, Nealon visited Power Packs’ facility to present the check in person and tour the building. Last year, the organization served over 500,000 pounds of food to families throughout the county.

Nealon first decided to become involved with GOTR Lancaster as a way to encourage students outside of the classroom. She was drawn to the

program’s mission to promote positive body image, self-respect and confidence in young girls. As a teacher, Nealon also appreciates the lessons that are taught to girls in the program. Lessons include overcoming adversity and building healthy relationships in addition to the benefits of exercise. “These are things that people didn’t talk about when I was young, but I wish they did,” Nealon said.

Prior to becoming a coach, Nealon served as a running buddy for GOTR Lancaster. As a running buddy, she helped young athletes prepare for the 5K race at the end of the season. “(GOTR) teaches girls the core components of lessons that are applicable to everyone at any stage of life,” said Nealon.

“You’ll see a variety of friends you

might have heard on the Kids Cookie Break,” explained Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations for WJTL FM 90.3, referencing the kid-friendly radio program.

“It’s like we’re bringing all of the fun of the Kids Cookie Break to a free event for families.”

Two outdoor stages will feature performances and programs by Phredd, Steven Courtney, First Capital Drumline, Jared Erb, Cissy and The Man, Marian & Friends Ventriloquist, Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, This Way Up and Ryan & Friends.

“We will also have a bounce house, covered wagon rides, Spooky Nook Gymnastics, barrel train rides, chalk art, interactive vendor tents and carnival games,” Gagne noted.

This is the 11th year for the Kids Cookie Break Fest. Each year, the event supports an organization in

the community by encouraging participants to donate specific items with admission.

“This year, we are inviting everyone who attends to donate art supplies to the School District of Lancaster,” Gagne explained. “Specifically, we are asking for art paper, paintbrushes and Sharpies.”

People will have the opportunity to purchase a Chick-fil-A box lunch to enjoy on-site, with proceeds helping to offset the cost of the event. “People are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch if they want to,” Gagne remarked.

She noted that the fest relies on
