Mountville Fire Company Seeks Community Support By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Taking Steps To Aid Fallen Firefighters’ Families Twelve-year-old Lauren Cohen of East Petersburg has never known a world in which Sept. 11 is just another day. The preteenager has always understood 9/11 as the day when 343 firefighters died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The event has a personal meaning for Lauren, as her father, Mark Cohen of East Petersburg, has
been an active firefighter ever since he became eligible at age 16. “Firefighting is a big part of my life,” Lauren said. “My dad is a big role model for me. I want to be a firefighter just like him.” Thus, when Lauren considered what good deed to do for her bat mitzvah - a religious ceremony marking the matriculation of Jewish youths into adulthood at age 13 - she immediately turned to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which, since 1992, has been fulfilling its mission to remember fallen firefighters and provide resources for their families as the survivors rebuild their lives. Lauren is familiar with the organization because Mark, See 9/11 Stair Climb pg 3

Take Two For Triathlons Running, cycling, and swimming are part of the Hempfield recCenter’s annual TRI For Life and TRI For Fun events.
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Hempfield recCenter originally planned to hold its annual TRI For Life and TRI For Fun events in May, but like practically everything else this spring, the triathlons had to be canceled or postponed. Now, the rec center is trying again. The 2020 TRI For Fun for youngsters ages 7 to 12
will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. Checkin will be open from 4 to 4:45 p.m. at the rec center, 950 Church St., Landisville. As its name implies, the TRI For Fun is designed to be a fun, noncompetitive event, with each participant receiving a medal, a T-shirt, and a goodie bag. The distances for each leg will vary according to age group. Everyone who completes the TRI For Fun See Hempfield recCenter pg 3

time since the 1980s. The organization would also like to upgrade the electronic key system on the building to improve security. Operating the emergency vehicles is pricy, and replacing them costs even more. With the MFC responding to 339 calls in 2019, the apparatus roll out into the community almost daily. The oldest vehicle in the fleet is an engine that has been in service for at least 30 years. The newest piece is already about 10 years old. Taraborelli noted that the base price for a fire engine is about $750,000, so the MFC has delayed replacing the older units. The MFC made a change to its registration with the Internal Revenue Service this year that may help with expenses over time. When the MFC first filed for nonprofit status, it was See Mountville Fire Company pg 3

Mountville residents should have received a markedly different fund drive mailing from the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) within the past few weeks. “We tried some new things this year: We added color and PayPal,” said MFC public information officer and senior firefighter Peter Taraborelli. “We got 60 responses right away - impressive!” As an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, the MFC depends on donations to continue serving Mountville borough, parts of East and West Hempfield townships, and surrounding municipalities. Adding an electronic donation option has the benefit of enabling donors to commit to recurring donations at weekly,
monthly, and yearly intervals. “We have a lot of people who’ve set up never-ending (donations),” Taraborelli said. “Three, five, 10 bucks every month is helpful because we can start to depend on it.” One-time gifts are also welcomed, of course, and the MFC hopes to raise $50,000 through the fund drive. Writing the letter presents the MFC with an opportunity to rework its punch list. “(We prioritize purchases that promote) life, safety, and specific to our mission over things that would make our lives easier,” Taraborelli explained. The MFC regularly sacrifices maintenance costs in favor of buying lifesaving equipment, but at some point, the leaking 14-year-old roof really must be replaced and the pitted parking lot has to be repaved for the first

9/11 Stair Climb from pg 1 a doctor, provides emergency medical support at the Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, which is a fundraiser for the NFFF. “9/11 was a terrible time for first responders, firefighters, and America as a whole,” Lauren explained. “People who lost their lives then and since then shouldn’t be forgotten. I’d like to honor their memory and their service.” “This was a cause Lauren chose on her own,” Mark said. “It really makes me very proud.” This year’s stair climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the climb will begin after a solemn program at 9 a.m. The event will conclude around 11:30 a.m. There is a
cost to participate in the climb, during which participants will summit the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - the number in the World Trade Center towers. The proceeds will be given to the NFFF. Lauren hopes to raise additional funds for the NFFF by offering opportunities to win new fire helmets. She contacted a manufacturer, which donated two standard helmets, and a local supplier of firefighting gear, which provided a gift certificate for a leather helmet. Individuals may enter the drawing at the stair climb or by sending a message to the event organizers at www.facebook.com/Lancaster StairClimb before Sept. 13. Lauren said she hopes to take a check for the total raised via the helmet giveaway to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in
Emmitsburg, Md., after the climb. Lauren’s fundraiser comes at a crucial time for the NFFF, said Lancaster stair climb chair Scott Yuill. In addition to firefighters dying of the typical on-job causes, 58 individuals have died of causes related to COVID-19 in circumstances considered line-of-duty deaths. “They need the money now (to help the surviving families), but the number of stair climbs has been reduced drastically,” Yuill explained. “We need to have the climb so we can raise some money for their needs. … But we need to do it smartly.” Yuill said that the committee is preparing to be flexible in order to conduct the event in a safe manner. Social distancing will be possible in the stadium, but there is the option to partici-
pate virtually as well. In the event that Lancaster County has returned to the red phase on Sept. 13, the climb will be canceled and the registration fees will be considered donations to the NFFF. “It’s important to me personally - remembering all the guys that went to work that morning thinking they have plans that evening with their families and didn’t get to do them,” Yuill commented. “Plus, I think the families like to see their loved ones are being remembered, that their loved ones aren’t forgotten.” Participants may register for the stair climb at http://events.firehero.org/ Lancaster or http://lancaster stairclimb.org by Tuesday, Sept. 1. After Sept. 1, individuals may register at the event.

registered as a 501(c)(4), a designation for volunteer firefighter organizations. However, most of the other local fire companies opted for a 501(c)(3) designation. That impeded applications for grants and hindered mergers with other fire companies. The Mountville Welfare Association provided assistance on completing the necessary paperwork to change the nonprofit category and funded the legal representation needed. The MFC’s bylaws were updated, the constitution was rewritten, and the MFC is in a better position for the future. “We changed from a social to a charitable organization,” Taraborelli remarked. “Now we are an organization that takes this seriously - it’s represented in our status - we are here to protect the community.” Community members are always welcome to check out the MFC’s financial records to see how donations are spent, Taraborelli said. Any time the engine bay doors are open, visitors may stop by the fire station, 26 N. Lemon St., Mountville. Guests are especially welcome on Mondays. Business meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month, and trainings begin at 7 p.m. on the remaining Mondays. We will also be implementing longer pool entry times,” McLaughlin said, explaining that swimmers will start every 15 seconds instead of the usual 10 seconds. Additionally, participants will be asked to wear masks in the common areas, such as the restrooms and hallways, and sanitizing wipes will be located throughout the venue. The races will be held rain or shine, but McLaughlin may postpone or cancel them if the weather is severe. Registration is required to participate in either TRI event. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications
to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for
safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. The season culminating 5K will take place mid-November through smaller site-based events and virtually. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org.

Moragne Receives Scholarship To Study Russian
Synclaire “Rocka” Moragne Synclaire “Rocka” Moragne, a high school student from Lancaster, was awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Summer Intensive scholarship to study the Russian language for five weeks. NSLI-Y is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) that promotes critical language learning among American youths. Moragne was set to depart for Moscow when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. In response to the U.S. Department of State’s global Level 4 health advisory and ECA’s pause of in-person exchange programs, the 2020 Virtual Summer Intensive program was created as an online alternative to the NSLI-Y overseas immersion program. Moragne, competitively selected from approximately 3,000 applicants from across the United States, is one of only a few students who was to study Russian this summer as part of the exchange. The program aims to provide robust language and cultural learning opportunities by virtually connecting the participants with teachers, international peers, cultural organizations, and communities where the target language is spoken. NSLI-Y is part of a multiagency U.S. government initiative launched in 2006 to improve Americans’ ability to communicate in select critical languages, advance international dialogue, and provide Americans with job skills for the global economy. Many NSLI-Y alumni go on to pursue education and careers vital to U.S. national security. NSLI-Y is administered by American Councils for International Education in cooperation with AFS-USA, American Cultural Exchange Service, AMIDEAST, iEARN-USA, the Russian American Foundation, Stony Brook University, the University of Delaware, and the University of Wisconsin. Applications for 2021-22 NSLI-Y programs are expected to be available at www.nslifor youth.org by late summer. The U.S. Department of State conducts study abroad programs for more than 1,000 American high school students and approximately 3,000 foreign high school students each year. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. Since the start of the COVID19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March.
