Building school spirit, on and off of the field

As a Christian school, Dayspring Christian Academy,120 College Ave., Mountville, is faced with many unique situations, which it seeks to tackle with a specialized approach. Among these situations is the opportunity to expand certain aspects of student life, including athletics.

“Although they are often referred to as extracurricular activities, we view athletics as a part of the educational process f or students,” said Dan Stone, Dayspring’s headmaster. “Beyond academics, the other portions of student life shape their thinking, their behavior and who they become.”

Over the course of the last five years, Dayspring has attempted to cultivate a brand that surrounds its sports teams with the intention of promoting school spirit. After the school introduced a new logo and offered its students more spirit wear, Stone began to notice an increasing number of students who are proud to be a part of its athletics programs in both winning and losing seasons.

Dayspring credits former athletic director Caleb Onasch with being instrumental in the enhancements in the department. Onasch took over as the head athletic director three years ago and worked closely with assistant athletic director Eric Lee to bring the program to where it stands today. After Onasch decided to step down from his position following the 2022-23 school year, Stone began the process of seeking a replacement to continue Onasch’s work. Stone sifted through multiple applications before he came across Daryn Vinson, and he immediately knew that it would be a natural fit.

Vinson, who resides in Washington Boro, had been teaching and coaching in the Penn Manor School District for 22 years. He has two children who attend

Schreiber Pediatric will hold annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival

The 35th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. The rain-orshine festival will take place from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and the rubber duckie race will begin at 5 p.m. A variety of food and beverages will be available to purchase from more than a dozen food trucks during the event.

school in Penn Manor and two children who attend Dayspring.

“As I’ve gotten to know (Dayspring’s) heart and mission over the past few years, I decided that I wanted to partner with them and the work they do,” Vinson said. “I saw this as a way to give back to the families of Dayspring students and help the school accomplish its mission.”

Vinson officially started in his new role on July 1. During the transition, he has been meeting regularly with Onasch to make it as seamless as possible. As the school geared up for the beginning of its fall sports season on Aug. 14, Vinson worked to finalize game schedules, solidify transportation and practice rentals and decide on coaching placements.

Moving forward in his new role, Vinson has a vision of the areas of the program he would like to further improve. One of his main goals is to increase Dayspring’s community

engagement and support. “ We draw students from multiple school districts, so it can be challenging to achieve that sense of community involvement,” Vinson said. “I’m looking at how to improve that and increase attendance for games. These kids are doing amazing work using the gifts God has given them.”

In addition to seeing an increase in the number of student accomplishments in the last few years, Stone has noticed his students making more of an impact in the community. The school frequently receives emails from restaurant employees and other schools’ coaches who state that Dayspring athletes’ respectful behavior left an impression. “These things are more special to us than trophies,” Stone said.

The festival will feature a variety of games and activities such as arts and crafts stations, traditional carnival games and face painting. Participants will have a chance to win prizes at each game, including books, stuffed animals, bracelets and small toys. Members of the 4-H club will offer pony rides for children. There will be no charge to attend the festival, but attendees will need to purchase tickets to partake in the games and activities.

At 5 p.m., more than 10,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will include limited-edition Halloween- and back-to-schoolthemed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/ events/duckies.

“Join us on a great day of golf and supporting our cause - giving kids a helping hand and a leg to stand on,” said Sean Laukhuff, inviting people to the third annual Iron-Leg Corp. Golf Outing.

The event will be held on Saturday,

Sept. 16, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Tickets will include the use of a golf cart, green fees, non-alcoholic beverages and lunch. There will also be a silent auction, giveaways

and ceremonies, including an honor guard flag folding.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, as well as for the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Iron-Leg formed in 2020 when Matt Millhouse and Manheim resident Laukhuff were looking for a way to help children in central Pennsylvania who need prosthetics. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without his right leg, and the organization was started in his honor.

“Since we’ve started Iron-Leg, great things have been happening,” Laukhuff said. “We have gotten a hand for a kid, and just four months ago, we got our first leg for a local kid from Lititz.” Iron-Leg helps raise money for high-end prosthetics, which are costly and not typically covered by insurance. Funds raised by the organization are also used to help recipients receive therapy to learn how to use the prosthetics.

Laukhuff noted that Joseph, the boy who recently received a new leg, will be at the golf outing. “He can do all the things right now that his peers can, and he can do the normal activities most kids can,” Laukhuff remarked.

Williams wins scholarship

Brian Williams, son of Christopher and Jamie Williams of Manheim, won the East Petersburg Woman’s Club scholarship. Brian plans to attend the University of Southern Illinois’ aviation flight school with the goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot. While at Hempfield, Brian was an excellent student and played junior varsity baseball and varsity football.

The recipient of the scholarship must have attended East Petersburg Elementary School for at least three years and must have participated in one extracurricular activity or have 32 volunteer hours throughout the 2022-23 school year.

The Woman’s Club raises money for this annual scholarship through its perennial plant sale in April. All plants are raised by the women and sold over a three-day period at

a home along Graystone Road in East Petersburg.

as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of

treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”

Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility on its current premises. The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall.

For more information or to become a volunteer for the festival, visit the aforementioned website or email Masengarb at kmasen garb@schreiberpediatric.org.

Community flea market announced

The Hempfield Community Labor Day Flea Market will be held on Monday, Sept. 4, at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. More than 100 vendors will offer items such as antiques, handmade crafts and vintage clothing. Food trucks will also be on-site.

The event is free to attend. It is organized by Hempfield recCenter,

and proceeds will be directed to the Everyone Belongs financial assistance program and various other community initiatives.

For more information or to register as a vendor, visit https:// hempfieldrec.com/programs/hemp fieldcommunity-flea-market/, call 717-898-3102 or email chamby@hempfieldrec.com.

In addition to raising funds, the golf outing is held as a memorial to honor the people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks.

“We raise a 38-by-22-foot flag suspended by two cranes a total of 138 feet in the air while bagpipes are played,” Laukhuff shared, adding that an honor guard will do a ceremonial flag folding while a bugle is played at the end of the event.

Items up for grabs at the auction will include a set of golf clubs; a $1,000 gift card; Omaha Steaks for a year; and more. A banquet dinner will held after the tournament at Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar & Catering at Four Seasons Golf Club.

Laukhuff emphasized that IronLeg would not be able to fulfill its mission without the support from the community. He noted that prosthetic limb can cost anywhere from $5,000 to upward of $50,000. This year, the organization was

chosen by Moose International from nonprofits throughout Pennsylvania as the recipient of its springtime donations. “We received $13,665,” Laukhuff said. The deadline to register for the golf outing is Saturday, Sept. 9. For more information or to register, visit https://ironleg.org.

“Grandview Vineyard is a family-owned and (familyoperated) business celebrating their 10th anniversary,” said Sarah Haines, owner. “You won’t want to miss this amazing celebration.”

Grandview will celebrate the milestone and support a local nonprofit at the 10th anniversary Bash and Benefit. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the vineyard, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy. It will run from 1 to 8 p.m.

The festivities will feature music throughout the day from Adam Blessing, Ryan Moran, Schnazzy and the Grant Bryan Band. The Steel W heels will headline the event with a performance beginning at 6:30 p.m. A variety of food trucks, including Fuego Latino, will be on-site, and wine and beer will be for sale. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

A grape stomp competition between two local businesses will take place at 3 p.m., and a live wine barrel auction will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the bash will benefit Aaron’s Acres. “They provide activities and services year-round for children and young adults with disabilities,” Haines said of the Lancasterbased organization. For 25 years, Aaron’s Acres has been providing therapeutically

based recreational programs to people ages 5 to 21. Activities are directed by specially trained and certified staff in an environment that bolsters socialization and communication skills. Care for the whole family, including emotional, educational and recreational support, is offered through the organization as well.

First Citizens Community Bank is sponsoring the Bash and Benefit, and additional sponsors are still being sought, Haines noted. For more information on sponsorship, contact sarah@grandviewwines.com.

Haines encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the beautiful setting of the vineyard while having fun and supporting a great cause. “W hat could be better than a relaxing afternoon and evening lounging by the vineyard, sipping on wine and beer with friends while listening and dancing to amazing local musicians and supporting children with disabilities?” Haines remarked. “This is a family-friendly event. Drop in for an hour or stay all day.”

Tickets for the Bash and Benefit may be purchased at www.grandviewwines.com by clicking on “Shop” and then “Event Tickets.” There is a discount for purchasing tickets online through Thursday, Sept. 7. Tickets will also be available for cash-only purchase at the gate.
