African Festival To Feature 12 Countries “We are trying to represent as many countries as possible,” said Dorothy Dulo, Rafiki Africa director and program manager. “We have 12 countries at the Lancaster event and three in York.” The Rafiki Africa Foundation is committed to helping African children and families transform their communities through education, health care, and economic empowerment and sustainability. Although most of the work takes place in Kenya, the annual Rafiki African Cultural Festival celebrates the diversity of African countries locally. Lancaster’s 11th festival, with representation of 12 African countries, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 5 p.m. in Binns Park, 100 N. Queen St., Lancaster. The inaugural event in York County is set for Saturday, Aug. 31. The 11th annual Rafiki African Cultural Festival has been planned by community members under the
leadership of Rafiki Africa Foundation. Attendance will be open to the public free of charge. The festival will feature authentic cuisine from local African communities, vendors selling African crafts and merchandise, local nonprofits, activities for children, African dance and drum performances, African pop music, and a fashion show. A schedule of performances for the event will be posted on the Rafiki African Festival event page on Facebook. Among the food vendors will be Rafiki Shoppe, a social enterprise that serves central Pennsylvania with authentic African cuisine. Proceeds from the business support community education and development in western Kenya. Rafiki Shoppe will feature East African cuisine. Hubbub World Market will offer Angolan food. Chef Oliver Saye will prepare Liberian food. Moroccan and West African cuisine will be available as well. See Rafiki African Festival pg 2
The 11th annual Rafiki African Cultural Festival will be held in Lancaster’s Binns Park on Sept. 14. The celebration of African culture will be a feast for all five senses, featuring music, food, and fashion.

The goal of the new Bridges Community Partnership is to span the gap between Penn Manor School District residents and the resources available to serve them. The group, which is composed of numerous current and past social workers, educators, and volunteers, began in 2014 as a think tank. It morphed into a task force and finally settled into Bridges Community Partnership. “We were looking to involve the community and educate them on the economic diversity in the district,” said founder Joy Meley, Penn Manor’s social worker for students in kindergarten through grade six and their families. Meley formed a team that included Jen Frank, Millersville University professor of social work; Deb Meckley, retired social worker and current volunteer with The Loft; Jill Montgomery, interpreter for Spanish-speaking families in Penn Manor and other districts; Sue Ellenberg, vice president of council and education committee member at St. Paul Lutheran Church; Shandra Stoner, former social worker and The Loft representative; and Christine Glover, community prevention mobilizer at Compass Mark. Keila Torres, Penn Manor’s new social worker for grades seven to 12, has recently joined

the group. The group researched the needs of vulnerable people in the district through a community assessment. When interviewed for the assessment, clients of The Loft, a food and clothing pantry hosted by Millersville Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, expressed a need for connections. “People came to The Loft every week, not because they need more pants, but because they were lonely,” Frank related. Quite a few obstacles can hinder the well-being of district residents. Access to high-quality jobs, transportation, professional attire, child care, consistent internet service, and tertiary educational opportunities are common barriers to well-being. Meley noted that shopping for school supplies can be a challenge, from both financial and transportation perspectives. Participation in drug and alcohol addiction treatment can also be difficult for the same reasons. “We’re a big district, with little transportation options, and our resources are spread out,” Frank said. Ellenberg noted that need is not isolated to rural areas. “The perception is that Millersville is upper middle class,” Ellenberg asserted. She credited a presentation Meckley gave at St. Paul as opening her eyes to a much different reality. “We can’t just add dollars. We

Lewicki excelled in all three sports. She lettered four times and was captain of the field hockey and tennis teams. In cheerleading, she lettered three times and was a co-captain of the team. King served as the Hempfield High School football coach for nine seasons. His 1965 and 1966 football teams won or tied for the Lancaster County championship. His overall record was 55-32-2. In 1968, he became the head wrestling coach at Hempfield and in 1970 led the Knights’ grapplers to a victory over Manheim Central, ending the longest league win streak in Pennsylvania. With a Section One record of 7-0-1, the girls’ team battled Section 2 champion Manheim Central for a 3-2 victory and a Lancaster County championship. Malles, Class of 1973, was the first of the Malles brothers to wrestle at Hempfield. He was a member of the Hempfield “30” club with a record of 54-11-0. As a senior, Malles won the section tournament and was named Outstanding Wrestler. As a senior, he was the District 3 runner-up and regional champion and placed fourth in the state, the highest finish ever by a Hempfield wrestler at that time. In cross-country, Sheesley, Class of 1987, was the top runner on the team in three of her four seasons. As a sophomore, she won the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League individual title, placed second in the District 3 meet, and medaled at States by placing 17th. She qualified for the PIAA State Championship all four seasons and led her team to three L-L League and two Dis-

District Chorus in high school? Wasn’t it a grand experience? Join the Lancaster Chorale for another grand experience.” Gerlach comes to the chorale with decades of experience in music education and conducting. He grew up in Washington Boro and graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1974. Gerlach met his wife, Margie, at college in New York; they have been married 41 years and raised several children. After completing his undergraduate studies, Gerlach served as the director of music ministries at Manor Church near Mountville. He then earned a master’s degree in music from West Chester University. Gerlach and his family left Lancaster so he could finish a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He worked as a professor at College of the Ozarks near Branson, Mo., until taking early retirement in 2016 to move back
to Pennsylvania. Although retired from his previous position, Gerlach has not left academia. He teaches music theory at Lancaster Bible College (LBC) and conducts the concert choir for grades nine to 12 at the Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts. Gerlach applied for the position at the Lancaster Chorale so that he could get back into conducting at an advanced level. He is also working on composing and arranging a full orchestral score for the show “Ruth,” which will be performed at LBC in January 2020. To join the Lancaster Chorale, readers may email Gerlach at bgmproductionsllc@gmail.com with the subject line “Lancaster Chorale” or attend the rehearsal on Sept. 8 to register and pick up a packet of music. There is a cost for the music. Chorale members are asked to attend all rehearsals, but some flexibility will be allowed.

Gerlach noted that with the shift in church music away from choirs and toward contemporary worship bands, talented singers no longer have as many outlets to perform collaboratively. The Lancaster Chorale provides an opportunity for people who may have sung in high school, college, or church choirs to participate in an artistic, choral singing group once again. “Excellent diction and a healthy approach to singing and good tone will be taught and expected. Great sacred classical literature will be the staple, but
we will also sing some modern and secular works,” Gerlach said. The Lancaster Chorale usually gives two performances a year, once each in the fall and the spring. The fall 2019 concert is themed “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and will be presented at Calvary Church at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. The chorale will sing numerous classically oriented pieces with the emphasis on praising God. The featured work will be John Rutter’s “Gloria,” whose three movements will be accompanied by brass, percussion, and organ. In spring 2020, the chorale is slated to perform the oratorio “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn, accompanied by full orchestra. “I hope that all former members of the chorale come back to the group after being off during the entire spring of 2019,” Gerlach said. “And I hope we can attract a large number of new members. Arts And Craft Show from pg 1 artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity
of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must
submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show ’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommonwheel.com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its
Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel.
