good way. Every year when I was in elementary and middle school, he would take me to the high school wrestling state tournament and he would sit there in the stands, point at the winner, and say to me, “That’s going to be you.” Bechtel: My mom (and) dad and my coaches Keith Nagley and Melissa Groff were instrumental in my development. Nagley’s belief in me really meant a lot to me and gave me confidence, not just as a player, but also as a person. Merchandiser: What does being inducted into the Hempfield Hall of Fame mean to you? Miller: It’s really cool. I appreciate it a lot. It’s kind of an odd feeling because it’s based on my accomplishments from so long ago, but it means a lot to be recognized. Bechtel: I’m super excited and honored. Hempfield has a special place in my heart because it played a significant role in my life. It will be great to come back and express my gratitude to what Hempfield has meant to me. Snacks and refreshments will be provided at the ceremony. To attend the event, email Jeffrey Bradley at Jeffrey.bradley6@gmail.com or text 717-327-8218. Registration will close on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Weis Markets recently announced that it has launched its annual Fight Hunger in-store donation program in support of hundreds of local food banks and regional food pantries in its seven-state market area. The program will run through the end of September. At checkout, customers will have the option of rounding up their order or purchasing a voucher to help support families in need in their communities. This is Weis Markets’ 14th annual Fight Hunger campaign, which has collectively raised more than $4 million and has been supplemented by company donations. Weis Markets’ Fight Hunger Campaign works with regional food banks throughout its seven-state market area, including the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg and Williamsport; Helping Harvest, Reading; Greater Berks FoodBank, Reading; and Philabundance in Montgomery and Bucks counties. These food banks and others help coordinate the program with local food pantries near each Weis Markets store. For more information, visit www.WeisMarkets.com or www.facebook.com/WeisMarkets.

Celebrate Fall At St. John’s BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is like hitting a big garage sale,” said Carole Hayes, describing the Fall Fest at St. John’s Herr Estate. “We have a huge variety of items.” The Fall Fest will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia. Items for sale will include books, puzzles, household goods, crafts, jewelry and baked goods made by residents. “You never know what we’re going to have for sale,” shared Anita Perrone, president of the executive committee. “This year we have an antique ironing board.” Along with other volunteers, Perrone and Hayes, vice president of the executive committee, spend all
year collecting items from residents and residents’ families, as well as donations from the community. “People are always giving their stuff away,” Hayes noted. “We have hundreds of books. We have stuffed animals and toys. People make afghans, hats and dishrags to sell. We really have something for everyone.” The Fall Fest will also feature food for sale, including homemade chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. “The chicken corn soup is our head of dining services’ grandmother’s recipe, and it’s very good,” Perrone said. Soup will be available to enjoy on site and for carryout. Money raised from the Fall Fest will benefit local organizations selected by the community’s residents’ council. Proceeds will also be used for the St. John’s benevolent fund. Hayes and Perrone noted that the Fall Fest requires a lot of planning to pull off a successful event. “It’s all run by volunteers,” Perrone stated. “We couldn’t do this without our volunteers.” Hayes encouraged everyone to
come out and shop, eat and socialize at the Fall Fest. “It’s fun to meet and talk with people,” she said. “It’s just fun to walk around and see what we have for sale and pick up a bargain. Everything is priced to sell.” As of late August, the Fall Fest was scheduled to be held indoors
at St. John’s, in the chapel and nearby hallways. If necessary due to COVID restrictions, the sale will be held outside in the parking lot. Signs will be posted at the community directing people where to go for the Fall Fest. Masks will be required, whether the Fall Fest is held indoors or outside.
Displaying items to be sold at the Fall Fest are (from left) Mary Miller, Anita Perrone, Carole Hayes and Linda Fackler.

for the community,” said Day of Music Chair Tony Kirchner. “What I’m probably most excited about is the idea of constant flow of music featuring national artists but also some regional artists as well. The goal was to stretch through genres, stretch through boundaries, but also stay true to ... what Long’s Park traditionally programs.” Day of Music will be a free event, but donations are encouraged. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site, and a beer garden facilitated by the owners of Trio Bar and Grill and the Queen Street Bistro - which plans
to open in late September - will offer adult beverages. “To be there, feel that energy, and get that whole sensory experience of being at a totally live event is a whole different experience than taking it in remotely or on your television,” said Kirchner. “This is something going on in your backyard, so take advantage of it!” Wauls mentioned that this event is made possible through the support of sponsors and donors and by revenue generated by the annual Labor Day Weekend Art Festival.
