Nevin Cooley, a deacon at Trinity United Church of Christ, 2340 State St., East Petersburg, noted that the church’s pastor told him how often church members would approach him with many questions regarding end-oflife situations. After realizing how many senior church members attend Trinity, the stewardship committee, of which Cooley is a member, decided to host seminars for three consecutive weeks during the month of October. “We thought it would be better if members and the broader community could think about these things,
not in a moment of crisis, but calmly and be able to make decisions for themselves that would help their families,” said Cooley. The church was going to offer the seminars last year, but that plan did not come to fruition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the committee was deciding how to structure the end-of-life preparation series, the members came up with three main categories: funeral planning, preparation of one’s estate through wills and trusts, and hospice care. All seminars are free to the public and will take place in the Isenberg Hall of the church at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

Echo Valley Art Auction Will Showcase Local Works Members of the Echo Valley Art Group have a passion for their craft, but they also have a problem. Years of creating art has created an overabundance of artwork and limited storage space. To remedy the issue, the members host an annual art auction not only to clean out their studios, but also to provide the public with access to affordable, quality art. This year’s Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Rader Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The grounds will open at noon for browsing, and the auction will begin at 1 p.m. “The auction is a fun, relaxed event,” said Carol Toner Shane, an artist with Echo Valley. “It’s a nice afternoon to enjoy art in a beautiful setting.” Hundreds of works by 20 artists will be up for auction at the event. Artists will be on site with their art, and Shane encourages attendees to talk to them about their work. “Every item will be marked with a minimum bid, and a lot of the art goes for the minimum bid,” Shane explained. “Some gets hyped up and
there’s a lot of competition between bidders, so that’s always fun, too.” Along with the auction, the event will feature live music and a free children’s art project from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for those ages 6 to 12. “Susan Ulrich, the new high school art teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School, will be working with the kids on the project,” Shane said, noting that the project will keep children occupied while parents browse the artwork. The event will also include food for purchase. Echo Valley is a group of professional artists who meet regularly and exhibit art together, Shane said. “ We currently have 23 members, and our membership is limited to 25,” she stated. “We have a wide range of artists in our group. Our youngest member is in her 20s, and our oldest is in his 90s.” Members include Ann DeLaurentis, Rob Evans, Becky Blosser, Dick Whitson, Brant Schuller and Susan Gottlieb. The group holds the auction not only to get art into the hands of more people, but also to support young artists in the county. Proceeds will support local youth art

Shane said the event is a casual, low-key way to enjoy art. “There’s no pressure,” she explained. “You can just come to look around, eat lunch and talk with the artists. We love talking to people about our art.” The event is also a way to showcase original art that’s affordable, she said, adding, “ We started this event because we believe as artists that original art enhances your life and makes your life

“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history,” said Marcus Snow, describing the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. The event will feature a car show, with categories including classic, antique and street rod cars. “We will have 12 trophies in different categories for the winners,” Snow stated, adding that people can register their cars on the day of the event. The Pig Iron Fest will feature crafters, artists, a food court, a kids’ zone, live entertainment and history tours. “Our kids’ zone is always very popular,” Snow remarked. “We’ll have lots of activities, including a hayride, crafts and pumpkin painting.” Live music will be performed by Tim Rinard, and juggler Chris Ivey will also entertain. Vendors will be on site, featuring a variety of items. “We have someone who sells 19thcentury-inspired jewelry,” Snow said, adding that anoth-

er vendor will offer crafts inspired by local Native American tribes. “ We’ll have a blacksmith and a guy who uses what we call a ‘putt-putt’ engine, or an engine dating from the early 1900s, to mix ice cream.” Snow noted that while the festival is traditionally held adjacent to the Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace, this year’s event will take place in a new venue. “This year will be a little different, but we are still going to focus on history,” he said. “We’ll have some displays about the pig iron industry, and we’ll be doing tours of a historic farm on the property.” The Pig Iron Fest is a way to honor the history of the region. “This area was very
important in the production of pig iron,” Snow explained. “It was ideally situated along the river for easy transport. What is now the Northwest River Trail was once a big industrial zone.” The festival is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club, and money raised by the event will be used to preserve local historic sites. Proceeds will also benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and will be used to support veterans’ organizations, including Glenn Hope Care Farm in Felton. For more information on the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show, contact Snow at mar cus@stagesplanning.com or 717-824-0694.

for “North Star Initiative” on Facebook. Among the many items that will be auctioned off are a vacation on Anna Maria Island, Fla.; a shooting range pass; a 24-hour rental of a 2021 Corvette; and a wine tour at Waltz Vineyards. Esbenshade said that the organization hopes to raise $150,000 from this year’s event and that the funds are necessary to help battle the expanding problem of human trafficking. “Through COVID, we saw an increase (in need),” Esbenshade shared, noting that The Harbor filled up over
the last year or so. “The pandemic compounded existing vulnerabilities and opened the door for individuals to be exploited,” she explained, adding that the shutdown “created an ideal environment for human trafficking to evolve and flourish.” Esbenshade cited a number of situations where women and children may have been put into vulnerable positions due to COVID-19 restrictions. To join North Star in its fight against human trafficking by purchasing a ticket, visit https://northstar initiative.org/tapas-shindig.
Postcard Club Schedules Grave Concern Posts Program Meeting The Lancaster County Postcard Club will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The meeting is open to the public, and there is no cost for admission. The evening’s program,
“Railroads, Mines, and Trollies,” will be presented by club member Leighton Stover and will focus on Pennsylvania coal regions. There will also be a postcard competition of large letter postcards. For more information about the meeting or the club, call 717-413-6882.
LGH Launches “Lead-Free Families” Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health recently announced the launch of Lead-Free Families, a 10-year community health improvement initiative aimed at eliminating childhood lead poisoning in Lancaster County. Lead-Free Families aims to identify and remediate lead hazards in at least 2,800 Lancaster County homes over the next decade. The $50 million investment is being initially funded and led by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Lead poisoning can result in serious and lifelong health and developmental issues, including lower IQ, slowed growth, learning problems, behavioral issues, hyperactivity, and hearing and speech development problems. It can also cause pregnancy prob-
lems, including low birth weight; premature birth; damage to the baby’s brain, kidneys, and nervous system; and even miscarriage. There is no cure for lead poisoning, and its effects are irreversible. Increased blood lead screening of children and pregnant women is one of the core components of Lead-Free Families. The program’s other services, which are offered across Lancaster County, include lead screening, testing homes for lead, in-home lead remediation, home visits with health care and social service support, community education and outreach, and public policy advocacy and education For more information on Lead-Free Families or to apply for the program, visit www.LeadFreeFamilies.org or call 717-544-LEAD (5323).
Grave Concern will hold a quarterly public meeting and program on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster County Mennonite Information Center, located next to the historical society at 2209 Millstream Road (Route 30 East), Lancaster. “Using DNA to Trace Family History” will be presented by Darvin L. Martin, who has been studying DNA in regard to family history since 2008. Martin will explain how DNA can help expand one’s family history beyond the standard paper trail of census lists, deeds,
wills, tax records, and cemetery records. DNA analysis, used in combination with all the other research tools available for family history, can provide the means to verify and enhance the story of one’s ancestors. Admission will be free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Face masks and social distancing are encouraged. Grave Concern is an organization dedicated to the history, preservation and restoration of historical burial places. For more information, readers may call 717-393-9745.

The program for the 2021 hybrid Tapas Shindig will include presentations by executive director Alicia Corrado, director of development Janelle Esbenshade, a member of the North Star Initiative board, and radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies. Esbenshade noted, however, that the most impactful presentation of the evening will be made by a human trafficking survivor. “We share out of our experience (with victims),” reflected Esbenshade, “but when you hear it firsthand (from a survivor), it’s a different experience.” North Star Initiative has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than 10 years. More than three years ago, the organization began operating The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.
This year’s fundraiser for North Star Initiative will be held at Warehouse 100, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Friday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. North Star did not hold the annual fundraiser in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year a larger venue will allow for more attendees to stand at high-top tables enjoying tapas and mocktails if they so choose. Limited seating will also be available. A hybrid option will provide those who choose to attend virtually with a link and a delivery of tapas and mocktails to hold a watch party in their own home. Both a silent auction and a live auction will be part of the event. The live auction will feature auctioneer Tim Keller. The silent auction will open online on Friday, Oct. 8. The online silent auction is open to the public, and those wishing to bid may do so by connecting to a link at https://northstar initiative.org or by searching
