Always Remember, Never Forget Hempfield High School Organizes 9/11 Memorial

his year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. To honor their memory, Hempfield High School (HHS) students and staff organized an outdoor memorial where they created thousands of individual hearts, each one emblazoned with the handwritten name of a victim. The memorial was organized by Hempfield School District social studies department coordinator Zahid Virmani and HHS social studies teacher Casey Douglas. Douglas noted that because it is the 20th anniversary, he wanted to do something special, so he proposed the outdoor memorial idea to Virmani on Sept. 4. Virmani

T

was very supportive, said Douglas. By Sept. 7, Douglas was able to come to school with 50 large plastic bags filled with the names of the 9/11 victims, card stock, and heart templates. To get as many students involved as possible, Douglas sent an email to HHS staff, notifying them of the memorial. The bags were gone before the end of the school day. “We wanted to get the students to understand the magnitude of the attacks and how much of an impact it had on our country,” said Douglas. “The way to do that would be to get them involved in remembering the victims by making it personal for them. It’s great when students learn history, but it’s better when they feel like they’re part of it.” The memorial was installed in front of the Franklin Office at HHS, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, on Sept. 10. Douglas mentioned that

Walk To End Human Trafficking BY COURTNEY MENGEL

According to Polaris, the nonprofit that operates the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline, 540 victims of human trafficking were identified in Pennsylvania in 2019. That same year, 524 phone calls, 104 webforms, 13 emails, 86 texts, and 19 webchats were made from Pennsylvania to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. After realizing he had witnessed an incident of human trafficking in Philadelphia, Steve Thurston told his wife, Amy, about what he had seen. Steve and Amy decided they

Fall Into History At The Harvest Festival

Beethoven Concert Series To Conclude The Arts at Millersville University will present a concert by pianist Xun Pan as the multi-season series Beethoven’s 250th Birthday Celebration draws to a close. “Three Sonatas From Three Periods” will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Steinman Hall in the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. There is a ticket fee, and there are special rates for students. Because the year 2020 marked the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Pan, Millersville University’s Tell School of Music director of keyboard studies, commemorated the composer’s legacy by presenting a concert series performance of all 32 of the composer’s piano sonatas, 10 piano and violin sonatas, five piano and cello sonatas, and three variations. Pan, in partnership with violinist Simon Maurer and cellist Emilio Colón, has nearly completed the performance of all 50 works over several years, both locally and internationally. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.artsmu.com.

For the past 31 years, the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS) has preserved the history of the Penn Manor area. The CAHS was founded because of a change to the Lancaster County Historical Society, which discontinued collecting and housing artifacts and became a research and library facility. It was suggested that regional historical societies be formed, and the CAHS was the last to become an official nonprofit, volunteer-based organization. Currently, CAHS is governed by a 15-member board and has more than 330 members. As an ethnographic museum, CAHS shows the lifestyle of a particular group of people who lived in a particular area. As such, the museum consists of a complete encyclopedic history of the Penn Manor area with its collection of

native rocks, minerals, taxidermy, clothing, trees, plants, and more. With the exception of two years - last year being one of them - the CAHS has hosted an annual fall harvest festival since the organization’s formation. This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place at Ehrlich Park, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. There will be demonstrations and sales of crafts made by weavers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, pottery makers, rifle makers, and many more. People will be dressed in period clothing from the 18th and 19th centuries. Native Americans will set up teaching tables, and there will also be children’s activities, such as pumpkin painting and rope making. Vice president of CAHS Jim Kauffman noted that over 200 pumpkins were painted in 2019. “We have a rich cultural background, and it’s a matter of replicating it and sharing it with people,” stated museum curator Ken Hoak. “A lot of the demonstrations are more than just activities; they were livelihoods for people back then. People will find this to be a great educational experience.” The festival will be free, but

We went back to all of our classes and tried to encourage discussion around this too to really get them to interact with the material.” “One of the most important things to remember is that our school came together to do this, and that’s what it was like after 9/11,” said Douglas. “The country came together, and people felt that unity. Many people feel like our country is divided, but I think (students) forgot about that when they did this (project).” To learn more about what occurred on 9/11 and the victims, visit www.911 memorial.org.

Hempfield’s Grace Lehman, left, and Sophie Carson paired up to defeat Conestoga Valley’s Jenna and Megan Rychener, 8-2, to add a doubles point to the Black Knights’ 7-0, Section One win over the host Buckskins on September 9.

Wendell each won their respective singles match in straight sets. GOLF Warwick and Penn Manor both finished strong in Monday’s Section One battle at Four Seasons. Warwick finished with 321 team points to Manor’s 322. Manheim Township (327) took third while Cedar Crest (341) Lancaster Catholic (345) and Hempfield (349) also competed. Sawyer Marten led the Knights with a 76. Matt McCullough shot a 90 while Evan Sipe and Ethan Greene had respective scores of 91 and 92. Hempfield fell to 5-10 on the year. FOOTBALL The Hempfield football team faced the fourth-ranked team in the District Three 6A power rankings on Friday night at Central York. The Knights hung in there against the Panthers, scoring two second-quarter touchdowns to even the score at 14-14 before halftime. They did so on two touchdown passes by Cameron Harbaugh, who connected with Aidan Shorter on a seven-yard toss and with Tom Minnich on a 43yarder - both followed by Cannon Biscoe extra-point kicks. “Cam threw for over 100 yards with a touchdown,” head coach George Eager noted. “Central York played in the state championship last year. They have some good talent.” Beau Pribula’s seven-yard touchdown run and his 27-yard scoring pass to Imeire Manigault helped Central regain momentum in the third quarter. Pribula finished with three touchdown passes on the night. The Panthers (3-0) added a rushing touchdown in the fourth to make it 35-14. “We had a fumble, an interception and a blocked punt. They scored 21 points off those,” said Eager. With the Panthers taking a 35-14 lead, the Knights responded on Grant Hoover’s 89-yard kickoff return. That would, however, be the end of the scoring on September 10, as the Panthers turned away the Knights 35-

Badriaki’s commitment to school started early in his life, as his parents and siblings exemplified the impact of education. His parents provided a safe childhood and the gift of access to education, yet there were times when they financially struggled to send him to school every year. To keep up with his classmates, he would spend days outside the classroom window listening to lessons and evenings completing homework by candlelight until his family could afford for him to return. Badriaki earned a Doctor of Ministry in leadership and global perspectives from George Fox University, a Master of Arts in pastoral and intercultural studies from Multnomah University and Biblical Seminary and a Bachelor of Science from Concordia University. He is pursuing a doctorate in intercultural education from Biola University. Michael is the author of the book “ When Helping Works: Alleviating Fear and Pain in Global Missions.” Badriaki described himself as a student-centric educator who seeks to facilitate learning by elevating the importance of prayer, the Gospel, Scripture, service learning, doing justly in accordance to Micah 6:8, innovative entrepreneurship, assessments, and service learning both locally and globally. To read an interview with Badriaki, visit www.lancaster mennonite.org/about/news/ and look for “Meet Dr. Michael Badriaki, LM’s New High School and Middle School Principal.”

When Cara Scudner’s young cousin asked her to help with the Girls on Track team she had joined at Sacred Heart in Lancaster in 2013, Scudner was prepared. Having taken 5:30 a.m. jaunts with Back on My Feet - a running program for members of the homeless community - during her last year of college, Scudner signed on as assistant coach. Following the end of that season, Scudner contacted Jen West, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director, to ask where the program might use her as a coach. Since then, Scudner, who is a competitive adult figure skater with the Red Rose Figure Skating Club, has coached 17 seasons with GOTR, including stints at Fritz and Nitrauer elementary schools and even organizing a community team made up of girls from public, private, and homeschool situations in Leola during 2020. Scudner also set up a decorated 5K course for participants who lived near her home when GOTR’s spring 2020 event was canceled. In June of 2021, Scudner was presented with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that everything about coaching is fun, but that the culminating 5K, which the girls run at the end of the season, is “magical.” The winner of the Ellen Award receives a

special bracelet and $500 to donate to the nonprofit of her choice. Scudner chose Patients R Waiting, an organization focused on eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine. While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. To increase the number of participants, more volunteer coaches are needed. “Many of our coaches are teachers, and teachers are so incredibly overloaded right now,” explained West, who is looking to family members of girls and community members to step up. “The girls need the social and emotional connection with friends now more than ever,” said West, who hopes that by spring the program will be able to serve 1,000 girls countywide as in the past. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit www.gotrlancaster .org. Those who have questions about volunteering may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

“Who am I?” might be one of life’s biggest questions. Some people believe that getting to know themselves requires discovering their roots because knowing their history and culture helps them construct their individual identities. It can also enable them to build a sense of pride. One of the early advocates for a Mennonite historical society in Lancaster County was pastor and farmer Ira D. Landis. The first meeting of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was held in May 1958. Eleven years later, the society purchased the Hans Herr House. Built in 1719 by Christian and Anna Herr, the Herr House is not only the oldest surviving house in Lancaster County, but it is also known as the oldest original Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Restoration and archaeological excavation on the house began in 1971, and the site was officially opened to the public in 1974. Since the 1990s, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has hosted an annual Maize and Snitz Festival at the Herr House & Museum. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, staff at the museum were able to take a year and a half to redefine the 2021

Maize and Snitz Market Fair. The idea for the upcoming event is to offer attendees a more complete understanding of what Colonial life would have been like for the Herr family. “This is part of the Herr family’s story, but this is also part of the story that related to hundreds if not thousands of people when they came to America,” explained Jason Stetler, digital and communications storyteller for the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. The Maize and Snitz Market Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the historic grounds of the 1719 Herr House & Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Attendees will have the chance to immerse themselves in the cultures of early European and indigenous people of Lancaster County. For the first time, the rain-or-shine event will feature artisans who specialize in 18thcentury trades. Professional tradespeople will demonstrate embroidery, tape weaving, baking, hearth cooking, Native American foods, and fingerweaving. People can shop for handcrafted items such as redware pottery, hand-dyed wool yarn, hand-turned wooden implements, wrought iron, bobbin lace, and paper goods. At the market fair, Drew

Shuptar-Rayvis will speak about the relationships between early European immigrants and indigenous peoples, and Mark A. Turdo will discuss the history of cider and his experiments in re-creating 18th-century recipes. “The story of the Herrs and the other families who came over with them is totally relevant to early American history and what historians refer to as the Atlantic world and global

economy that existed in the 18th century,” said Tiffany Fisk, 1719 Herr House & Museum administrator. “This is important for everyone, not just one set of people.” The 1719 Herr House & Museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Field trips can be scheduled on Thursdays by contacting Fisk at 717-464-4438 or museum @lmhs.org. For more information, visit www.lmhs.org.
