Walk Aims To Raise Epilepsy Awareness, Research Funds By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Aaron Wingert of Lancaster was 30 when he experienced his first epileptic seizure. “Everything is normal in your life, and then you wake up in the back of an ambulance,” he said. Nineteen-year-old Nadine DeBalko of Adamstown was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12 and had to change her perceptions about the disorder. “I thought it was just older people who had it,” she recalled. Lancaster resident Kerri Michnya never remembers a time without seizures. She was diagnosed at age 10.
Now age 42, she has been seizure-free for 11 years. Both Michnya’s and Wingert’s seizures are well-controlled by medication. DeBalko opted to have surgery two years ago to remove her amygdala, the area of the brain where her seizures were centralized. She considers herself cured. “Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder,” Michnya explained. “It looks different and treatments are different in each person.” Navigating life with epilepsy is challenging, the trio agreed. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of resources available,” Wingert said. “I saw my neurologist every six months, but they couldn’t

Epilepsy has two sets of specific challenges, Wingert suggested: the seizures themselves and the side effects of the treatments available. The uncertainty of the disorder, the restriction from See Walk To End Epilepsy pg 4
Fun Fest Will Support Geib Family Library Holds Appreciation Event By Sara D. Ulrich

Valentine’s Day is often an occasion for happy changes in life: first confessions of love, confirmations of continued affection, and even proposals of marriage. For Willow Street residents Baron and Rene Geib, who have been married for 27 years, Valentine’s Day 2017 brought them into the section of their vows that no one wants to experience: the commitment to love in sickness as well as in health. The ordeal began with what looked like a blood blister on Baron’s arm. Heeding Rene’s urging, Baron had the spot biopsied, and on Valentine’s Day 2017, he received the diagnosis of See Family Fun Fest pg 4

The Lancaster Public Library celebrated its supporters and volunteers on Sept. 8 during an appreciation event held at the library. In addition to providing an array of food, fellowship, and musical entertainment, the event served to give the library’s biggest fans a sneak peak at several upcoming library events. Stephanie and Tom Yentsch have supported the library since they moved to the area several decades ago. Coming from a rural area in western Pennsylvania, Stephanie noted that she was thrilled to live within walking distance of the library. “I was excited; it was huge!”
Lancaster Public Library capital campaign co-chair Heather Sharpe (left) and interim executive director Lissa Holland presented artistic renderings of the planned new library during a volunteer and supporter appreciation event on Sept. 8. Stephanie recalled of her first visits to the library. Later, when Stephanie’s mother, Virginia, came to live with the couple, a library visit became part of See Appreciation Event pg 2

During interim library executive director Lissa Holland’s remarks, she shared similar sentiments about the library. Holland has served the library in multiple capacities for more than 12 years. She expressed her thanks for the volunteers and supporters. “Because of all of you, we are able to open our doors and provide these services to the Lancaster community,” she said. “Our supporters are an invaluable part of this organization, and your gift of time and financial support allows us to do the

Guests at the appreciation event were then treated to a preview benefit performance from Penn Square Music Festival coloratura soprano Holly Flack. Finally, Holland shared that the signature event may be the last event held in the library’s Duke Street location. While details have been closely guarded, Holland surprised attendees and revealed artistic renderings of plans for the new library, to be built on Queen Street in Lancaster city. Holland stressed that the renderings are initial and are in no way finalized. The library recently launched its capital campaign to help fund the move to Queen Street, and organizers noted that all plans are in the very beginning stages and are subject to change. work that we do.” Holland went on to share that more than 150 volunteers clocked more than 4,000 volunteer hours in 2019. Holland also divulged the theme for the library’s upcoming signature benefit: “The Queen of the Night,” based on the novel by Alexander Chee. The event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the library, 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Tickets are required to attend and are available through the library’s website, www.lancasterpubliclibrary.org. “Come see how the library can be transformed into a dazzling French opera hall,” Holland commented. “There will be themed foods and specialty beverages, as well as performances.” The event will also serve to commemorate the library’s 260th year in operation.
During the appreciation event on Sept. 8, Lancaster Public Library volunteers and supporters were treated to a special catered event with themed beverages, prize drawings, and musical entertainment.

Trust Plans Columbia Architectural Tour On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Historic Preservation Trust (HPT) of Lancaster County will host the Columbia Architectural Tour, showcasing the beauty of buildings dating from the 1700s to the 1930s. “Each of the 25 sites is significant, and that’s why we picked it to be part of the tour,” explained Matt Barley, HPT board member and tour committee chair. The HPT was established in the 1960s in response to the urban renewal happening in Lancaster, and Barley said that since then a walking tour of a borough or town in Lancaster County has been offered to the public approximately every two years. The mission of HPT, then and now, is to encourage and facilitate historic preservation throughout the county. “At the Trust, we educate, we collaborate, and we celebrate, and the tour hits all three of those,” explained Barley. “You’ve got to continually be educating because it’s so easily forgotten.” “The tour is about Lancaster County as a whole,” said Barley, noting that past tours have highlighted preservation in areas such as Marietta, Ephrata, Strasburg, and Bowmansville. “Having Columbia for this year’s tour seems to parallel the exciting things that are happening there.” Columbia is known to some as the jewel of the Susquehanna and still others as the Brooklyn of Lancaster, but organizers have promoted the Columbia Architectural Tour as a chance for people to see why some are calling Columbia “the Paris
of Pennsylvania.” Barley, who resides in Columbia, admits that the phrase began somewhat in jest, but the more he considered it, the more it stuck. “The way that Columbia is laid out makes it very walkable, and it has a lot of green spaces and parks,” said Barley. Barley said that the ColumbiaWrightsville bridge, which is one of the stops on the tour, is perhaps the most architecturally interesting structure in the county. Construction on the bridge began in 1929 and was completed in 1930. The oldest building on the tour is Wright’s Ferry Mansion, built in 1738 and home to the famous Susanna Wright. Educated in England, Susanna helped to pioneer the once-thriving silk industry in Columbia and corresponded with intellectuals like Benjamin Franklin throughout her lifetime. The guided exterior walking tours will be led by architectural designers and are set to begin at 10 a.m. and depart every half-hour through 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Participants must check in for the tour at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, to receive wristbands and a tour booklet. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. Although 25 properties are included in the tour, not all of those will be part of the guided portion of the tour. Tourgoers will each receive a 75-page booklet including historical background and anecdotes for each of the sites, and they may explore the other properties on their own during tour hours. A trolley will be running on a loop throughout town as another mode of

Creative Works of Lancaster will present a special night of theater, “The 24 Hour Plays: Lancaster,” on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at The Stone Independent School, 480 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. This is the ninth year for “The 24 Hour Plays: Lancaster,” a project that has inspired 62 new works and has brought hundreds of local and regional theater artists together. Six writers, six directors, 25 actors, and one production team will write, rehearse, and perform six short plays in a 24-hour period. The process will begin on the evening of Friday, Oct. 4, with writers choosing actors from a pool of talent. The six writers will work through the night and hand their work to directors early Saturday morning, the day of the performance. After negotiating for their choice of play, directors, along with their play’s
actors and a crew of stage technicians, will prepare for the 7 p.m. performance. Since its inception in New York City in 1995, The 24 Hour Plays have been performed for audiences throughout the United States and the world, attracting both professional and amateur theater artists. The upcoming Lancaster production will feature veteran members of the central Pennsylvania theater scene working alongside artists who may be new to the audience. “The 24 Hour Plays: Lancaster” will debut Creative Works’ new ticket pricing structure: pay-what-you-decide (PWYD). While-pay-what-you-can pricing asks patrons to pay for a show before they see a performance and is traditionally used as a limited-time promotional offer, PWYD allows patrons to reserve
their tickets ahead of time and pay after the performance. Creative Works intends to continue using this pricing model for all of its future events. PWYD allows all patrons to assess the value of a performance for them individually and removes the risk of spending money up front on a new performance they might not traditionally attend with a traditional ticket pricing structure. With the introduction of PWYD, Creative Works will never turn away a potential audience member due to financial limitations. All tickets are free to reserve, and there is no obligation or suggested minimum to pay. Tickets can be reserved at www.creativelancaster.org. Reservations are highly encouraged, as availability may be limited at the box office on the night of the performance.

After surgery to remove the tumor and some of his lymph nodes, Baron was told he had stage 3 cancer. Unfortunately, the surgery did not stop the progression of the

All of Baron’s lymph nodes had to be removed, and, in four days, a tumor grew from a pea size to a 4-inch diameter around his brachial artery and brachial nerve, causing complications in his arm. and immunotherapy treatment, but the onset of pneumonitis caused the treatment to halt. He is now receiving only pain management as the primary course of care, Rene reported. If the pneumonitis decreases, immunotherapy may be restarted. “ We are in limbo but have accepted whatever God has in store for our lives,” Rene said. “ We take one day at a time, trusting God for each moment. We have decided to take what we have, enjoy it, learn from it, share it with others, and just live the best we can. We can’t complain: God has been with us each step of the way.” The Geibs are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Walk To End Epilepsy from pg 1 driving and from certain occupations, and the financial costs of medication, ambulance rides, and hospital stays can create a lot of stress. For people like Wingert who have idiopathic seizures, stress can trigger more seizures. Thus, having a community of understanding people is hugely important. Michnya is EFEPA’s Lancaster County resource coordinator. She coordinates a support group and other programs to ensure people with epilepsy have the encouragement, guidance, and information they need. “My job allows me to give back,” she said. “I feel really fortunate.” Michnya is also helping to coordinate Lancaster County’s inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy along with Wingert and DeBalko, who are both volunteers. Wingert had attended a version of the event in Philadelphia and was so impressed by the camaraderie and sense of community among the participants that he suggested that it be brought to Lancaster. “It was more than time to have it here,” Michnya said. “It sends a great message: You are not alone in your diagnosis.” The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 12. Registration will open at 9 a.m., the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude by noon. Both DeBalko and Wingert are slated to speak during the opening ceremony. The
walk will mimic Philadelphia’s event by taking place inside the stadium. “It really brings the community together,” Wingert said of keeping the event contained. The event is family focused, so there will be activities for children throughout the morning. These include entertainment by a magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, and play on an inflatable slide. Refreshments will be provided at the event, and an afterparty will be held at Yorgos, 66 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There will also be opportunities to win gift cards and other prizes at the walk. When artists congregate, they often like to discuss their creations with each other. This was the case when painter Stephen Gambone and mixed-media artist Carrie Monique Daigle first saw Paris Llanso’s brightly colored painting called “Citrus Splash.” “I love how the buildup of paint is thick and structural,” commented Daigle. “That’s (called) impasto,” added Gambone. The work of Gambone, Daigle, and Llanso will be among the creations of the nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds, 2369 Lititz Pike, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature the work of local high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will bring to sell at the show will include jewelry, mixed media pieces, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, ceramics, pottery, and more. The show is billed as a child-friendly and pet-friendly event. Gambone, a self-taught painter who has had a passion for art from an early age, has been painting abstract cityscapes in vivid hues. This year, he also created a surreal scene of brightly colored trees with purple trunks behind a red foreground using the paint in a textural manner. Daigle creates her mixed-media

artwork using items as varied as buttons, crumbled pieces of material left in a kiln after it fires, wallpaper, and lace. She sometimes uses a board background or creates on canvas with resin poured over the top. “I get all over the place with my imagery,” said Daigle, displaying a piece that uses wallpaper, a pearl necklace, a heart, flowers, and lace. She said she likes to gather a number of items and pull them together to make something beautiful. Artist Lisa Madenspacher found the inspiration for a recent painting of yellow flowers in a drawer - literally. “I was cleaning out, and I found this photo,” explained Madenspacher. “My Russian neighbor made these artsy and exotic flower arrangements, and I would take photos (of them).” When she found the photo, the memory of the arrangements returned, and she decided to turn the snapshot into a painting. Jennifer Cavalcante, another artist participating in the show, will showcase a photograph of eye-liner lilies that is so vividly hued, the piece resembles a painting. During the art show, organizers will hold hourly drawings for gift certificates to be used toward the purchase of artwork. Each attendee will receive a ticket as he or she enters the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Both admission and parking are free. John Beaumont, who organizes the musical entertainment from the show, has put together a lineup that brings back a number of favorites from past events.

Customers Donate Funds For Food Banks In recognition of National Hunger Action Month in September, Giant Food Stores announced that its customers raised $780,676 to support local hunger relief efforts during the biannual Bag Hunger campaign. The company’s Bag Hunger campaign ran from Aug. 25 through Sept. 7 across all Giant and Martin’s stores. According to Feeding America, each dollar raised helps to provide at least 10 meals, meaning that the funds raised during Giant’s Bag Hunger campaign will fund more than 7.8 million meals. Funds raised during the campaign go to more
than 100 hunger-relief partners, including food pantries across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Major recipient food banks include Philabundance, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, and York County Food Bank. Throughout September, GIANT associates volunteered and made donations at select food banks and pantries to celebrate the contributions. To learn more about the company’s hunger relief programs, readers may visit https://giantfoodstores.com/ or https://martinsfoods.com/. Since 2008, Giant’s Bag Hunger fundraising campaigns have raised more than $12 million.

Rec Center Initiates Tree-Planting Campaign Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville, has initiated a tree-planting campaign that will run through Tuesday, Oct. 8. For more than 40 years, the nonprofit organization has prided itself on its 20-acre campus. While there have been many improvements to the facility, many mature, stately trees on the campus are nearing the end of their lifecycle. The purpose of the tree-planting initiative is to help the grounds remain park-like for future generations. Also, trees are known to provide clean air and oxygen, prevent soil erosion, reduce stormwater runoff, conserve energy, and combat climate change, among other environmental and societal benefits. Hempfield recCenter, in partnership with Stauffers of Kissel Hill, will offer a limited number of trees for sponsorship throughout the campaign. The
following trees are available: one 8-foot Norway spruce that will double as the facility’s holiday tree, four 6-foot red maples, two 6-foot red oaks, three 4-foot blue spruces, five 6-foot river birches, five 6-foot eastern redbuds, six 5-foot hemlocks, five 5-foot dogwoods, and eight 4-foot Green Giant arborvitaes. A four-by-six-foot cast aluminum donor recognition plaque will be included with the top three tiers and will also be available for purchase with any other sponsored trees. Sponsorship is 100% tax-deductible. Planting day will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. with a rain date of Saturday, Nov. 9. Donors, Scout troops, service organizations, and the community are invited to take part in the planting. For more information, including pricing, readers may visit www.hempfield rec.com/events.

He uses his eyes well on the soccer field and is a good target for us to play the ball to him up top.” On the defensive end of the pitch, Evan Benedict snagged three saves and Brandon Koehnke was credited with one more. Nathan Leisure’s goal in the 61st minute was the only offense the Knights could muster against a tough Warwick team (5-1-1, 3-1-0 league) in a 6-1 defeat on the road Thursday. “Nathan has created a lot of attack on offense, setting up opportunities for other people as well. His hustle and intensity have been great.” The Warriors scored twice in the first half and had doubled their lead to 4-0 by the time Hempfield got on the scoreboard. Andrew Schwartz scored two of those four goals and finished with a hat trick. Ashley addressed some of the struggles this 2019 team has had, despite being at .500 in the league and having beaten Penn Manor, who was tied for first in Section One at the time. “Some of it has been due to injuries Photo by Bob Diller and some due to lack of execution,” The Knights’ Jake Edmonds maneuvers in front of Penn Manor’s Jackson Hostetter during he said. “We knew we had a young Hempfield’s 4-2, Section One victory over the visiting Comets last Tuesday. team to begin with. We were already in a rebuilding mode and we’ve had injuries on top of that. “But the guys have been trying,” continued the coach. “The results just haven’t been there. If we get some guys healthy, maybe we can turn it around.” GIRLS’ TENNIS Having a week that was packed with four matches, the Hempfield girls’ tennis team improved to 9-2, winning four times, including a 6-1 defeat of Ephrata, raising their L-L League mark to 4-1. Other victories included nonleague wins against Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday and two Saturday victories at Penn State Harrisburg over Lower Dauphin and Governor Mifflin. The Knights blanked Lower Dauphin 5-0 in the early match on Saturday. In doubles play, Joanna Newton and Sarah Shaub came through with 7-5, 6-2 wins at No. 1 while senior Sana Hafiz and junior Rory Cantwell played to 6-2, 6-4 victories. Tierney Cantwell took the number one singles 6-2, 6-3. the Comets (3-3, 2-1 league) made a late push to tie the game. “We played very well in the first half,” head coach Mark Ashley stated. “We made some mistakes in the second half.” Trailing 3-0 at intermission thanks to first-half goals by Colson Hunt, Hughie Pohl and Jake Edmonds, the
Comets scored in the 69th minute and made it a 3-2 game on a goal by Connor Mays three minutes later. Hunt helped Hempfield regain the breathing room. The senior scored with seven minutes to play, making it 4-2. “Colson Hunt has been a solid defensive midfielder for us,” Ashley

In the Warwick game, the Warriors took 12 shots on goal and Pitts made 10 saves. “Alexa Pitts is a senior keeper,” Atkins added. “She, and the underclassmen on defense, keep improving with each game.” GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The Black Knights racked up two more victories, improving their record to 6-0 on the year. They topped Lower Dauphin 3-1 on Monday and blanked Cedar Crest on the road in a Section One match on Thursday, raising their league mark to 5-0. Hempfield hosted Monday’s nonleague match and went up 2-0 with 25-21 and 25-15 wins. The Rams climbed back into the match with a strong 25-19 effort only to have Hempfield dominate the fourth set 25-10. Emma Bitner led the passing game with 40 assists while Claire Flood poured in the kills with 13. Leading the team in service aces was Gracyn Krazwicski with three. Allison Cummings came up with 13 digs and Rachel Spiling registered four blocks. Hempfield dominated Crest 25-11, 25-15 and 25-9 on Thursday. Flood and fellow senior Megan Criste each served up for aces in the win. Kylie Ulrich led the squad in kills with 10 while Bitner dished out 25 assists. Cummings had seven digs. GOLF Sawyer Marten continued his impressive season with a 77 on the course at Overlook on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights as a team didn’t finish strong, however, as Manheim Township won this Section One meeting that also included Cedar Crest, Lancaster Catholic and

just six minutes in. Kylee Hess tied it for Manor in the 25th minute. Also contributing to the Knights’ offense were seniors Ashley Hollinger and Gabi Hollinger with one assist each. Emily Antesberger, who made six saves in the Penn Manor match, made three saves to notch a shutout against Warwick three days later. The offensive contributions came from Gabi Hollinger, who scored 10 minutes into the match, Yurchak, who made it 2-0 midway into the second half, and Haski, who provided an assist. The Knights’ offense was wide awake Saturday morning, scoring five times to defeat Mifflin 5-2. Yurchak, Kielmeyer, Haski, Jessica Weinholdt and Gabi Hollinger each netted one goal. Hollinger and Yurchak also recorded assists. As the Knights out-shot the Mustangs 9-4, Antesberger made two saves in the win. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team played two close matches, defeating Milton Hershey 1-0 in a thrilling finish on Monday and coming up short against Section One rival Warwick on Thursday afternoon. “Kiera Boensch scored on a corner 56 seconds into overtime with an assist from Kelsea Dague,” explained head coach Tesla Atkins. In front of the Hempfield cage, during the entire regulation and the not quite one minute of overtime, Alexa Pitts had to make only one save for the shutout. “Alexa also intercepted a number of speedy girls running into the circle, but those aren’t counted as saves,” Atkins added.

before Jackson Shand caught a 24-yard scoring pass from Tanner Hess to put Hempfield on the board, 20-7 at the half. Junior running back Anthony Droege broke loose for a 36-yard scamper to the end zone and Nick O’Neill added the extra point to cut the deficit to 20-14 in the third quarter. The Falcons’ first touchdown of the fourth quarter came on Lawson Seyfert’s 11-yard run. The Knights had an answer - the aforementioned 14-yarder to Tanner Hess. But Cedar Crest put the game out of reach on the third TD of the game by Cruz. He ran it in from nine yards out, finishing with a spectacular night of rushing - 40 carries for 318 yards. Tanner Hess, who completed eight passes for 66 yards, had 80 rushing yards on 14 carries. Droege ran the ball eight times for 56 yards and a touchdown. Hempfield will look to bounce back against Lampeter-Strasburg (5-0) on Friday. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Black Knights scored 10 goals over a span of three matches, going 3-0 on the week and improving to 6-3-0 overall. Monday night’s 3-1 victory at Penn Manor and a 2-0 shutout of Warwick at home on Thursday evening raised the team’s L-L League mark to 3-1-0. The Penn Manor game was knotted at 1-1 at the half. It remained that way until Georgia Kielmeyer scored the go-ahead goal nine minutes into the second half. Lizzie Yurchak added one more 15 minutes later. Senior forward Anika Haski, who has been a big threat in the L-L League, scored the game’s first goal

3-2 with Lehman (6-0, 6-1) winning the first singles and Brighid Cantwell claiming a comeback win at number two (6-3, 6-7, 10-3). Newton and Shaub posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at number one doubles. At second doubles, Hafiz and Rory Cantwell played a tough match but were on the short end of the final result. They won the opening set 7-6 but lost another close 7-6 decision and an 11-9 tiebreaker. While Lehman and Tierney Cantwell posted an 8-2 first doubles win and the twosome of Newton and Brighid Cantwell also won 8-2 at second doubles, the Knights swept the singles matches versus Ephrata by Lehman (6-1, 6-1), Brighid Cantwell (6-1, 6-0), Tierney Cantwell (6-1, 6-1) and Newtown (6-4, 6-2). FOOTBALL The Friday night Section One clash between Hempfield and Cedar Crest went down to the fourth quarter with the host Falcons managing to hold Hempfield off 34-21. The victory kept Cedar Crest undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 league) while the Knights fell to 1-4 (0-2). The Knights had battled back to within six points of the Falcons in the fourth quarter when Sam Hess grabbed a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Hess - the second of two TD passes by the Hempfield quarterback. Fighting back was the theme for Hempfield on Friday night. The Falcons pulled ahead to a 20-0 lead thanks to a big 60-yard touchdown run by Tyler Cruz, who also scored on an 18-yard run to make it 13-0 in the second quarter. Cole Miller’s 19-yard touchdown reception made it 20-0

“This will be our sixth season, and we will have six concerts,” said Jessica Pavelko, public relations and marketing director with The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. “We will have an assortment of concerts and theater.” The Trust season will kick off on Thursday, Oct. 3, with Mike Block, cellist and vocalist, and Sandeep Das, playing the tabla, a percussion instrument that originated in India. The pair met through The Silk Road Project coordinated by Yo-Yo Ma with the goal of bringing together musicians from the East and the West. The duo has been sharing music with audiences since 2013, traveling the world playing adaptations along with their own compositions. Pavelko characterized the second concert, “Seen” - a song cycle by Kristen Brewer - as “a women’s Bible study in concert form.” “(Brewer) touches on key moments of women in the Bible who are in the lineage of Jesus Christ,” said Pavelko. Brewer will perform the piece Thursday and Friday, Nov. 21 and 22, at 7:30 p.m. each night. Calmus is a German a capella ensemble, which will be performing in America for the first time. “(Calmus) won the German equivalent of the Grammy,” said
Robert Bigley, executive director of The Trust. “(The members) are a very respected European vocal ensemble.” Pavelko noted that The Trust acoustics are especially suited to a capella. “They will be performing some of their personal favorites, and that will be our Christmas concert,” said Pavelko of the show planned for Friday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. For Valentine’s Day 2020, The Trust will host VOCES8 for the third time. “(They will sing) love songs from multiple genres and languages,” said Bigley. “They are well received by our audience,” recalled Pavelko. “They will do a number of classical pieces and crossover music, and their voices are absolutely beautiful in the great hall.” VOCES8 will perform at The Trust on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13 and 14, 2020. In March of 2020, soprano Amy Owens, pianist Kendra Bigley, and clarinetist Doris Hall-Gulati, who won a Grammy Award in 2019 for her solo in Lansing McLoskey’s oratorio titled “Zealot Canticles,” will perform Schubert’s “The Shepherd on the Rock.” The Thursday, March 5, concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. “That (piece is) very rarely heard because you have to have an amazing pianist, amazing singer, and amazing soprano,” said Bigley, who noted that because Owens is gaining a reputation as a crossover artist, some jazz pieces will be played as well. On Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., the
performance will include the “Four Seasons” pieces by Vivaldi and Piazzolla with Dutch violinist Carla Leurs and the group Cugnon Consort. “People look forward to ‘The Four Seasons,’ and it will be juxtaposed with the ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires’ by Piazzolla, a famous Argentinian composer, so it has a tango feel to it,” said Bigley, who said that Leurs was the first artist to perform at The Trust. “We have been trying to get her back ever since,” he noted adding that Leurs is teaming with some of the top young musicians in Europe in Cugnon. “It will be a really fiery concert,” said Bigley. According to Pavelko, last year’s performance of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” was so well attended, it will return on Saturdays, Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14, and Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and on Friday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. “We will make it a holiday tradition,” said Pavelko. The Trust will also feature Row House Forums, and the Square Halo Gallery featuring art inspired by the Christian faith will hold exhibits. A full schedule of events may be found at www.lancastertrust.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the website or by calling 717-560-8241. Readers who wish to purchase tickets in person may call the box office to make arrangements. Pictured on front: VOCES8 will play at The Trust Performing Arts Center on Feb. 13 and 14, 2020. The group will be among several guest performers at the venue during the upcoming season, which will kick off on Oct. 3 with cellist and vocalist Mike Block and percussionist Sandeep Das.

Two-Day Craft Show Will Aid The Cottage The Cottage is a ministry of Millersville Community Church that was recently formed to meet the need for safe housing for women and children in the Penn Manor School District. “We have a little more than $25,000 in the bank,” said The Cottage co-founder and marketing director Diane Duell. “Our goal is to raise $100,000 by 2021.” Duell explained that she and her team, which includes cofounder and vice president Judy Schroeder, have been working aggressively to raise funds to appeal to people and organizations that might invest in the ministry. The team has been working with a local real estate agent to evaluate the program’s needs and what might be available. The Cottage would ideally own a home that would provide respite for women and children who find themselves in difficult situations. The Cottage leaders are planning a concert in the spring. Prior to that, however, Schroeder and Sarah Hamblin have coordinated a craft and vendor show set for 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the church’s Grace campus, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville. “I often go to craft shows in the
fall and thought it would be a great way to raise money for The Cottage,” Schroeder said. Hamblin noted that the event’s two-day format has been patterned off a sale previously hosted by the youth group. The church has 50 spaces for vendors, who will be spread throughout the building. A few spaces remain for additional vendors; those who have committed to attending the show include sellers of nail polish strips, skin care products, makeup, handbags, greeting cards, photographs, gift bags, embellished tote bags, fleece blankets, succulents, fall and Christmas décor, quilted items, stroller blankets, kitchen textiles, papercrafts, wooden signs, and decorated wooden shoe forms. Jewelry made from seaglass and upcycled and repurposed materials, as well as steampunk and diffuser items, will also be available. In addition to the crafters and vendors, the event will feature a silent auction that will conclude at 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Items that will be sold to the highest bidders will include Longaberger gift baskets, jewelry, art, quilts, wallhangings, stained glass window art handmade in Kentucky, bar stools, and products donated by the show’s vendors. “We’ve had a great outpouring from our people with items for

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition - September 25, 2019 - 15
Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Slated The 43rd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, known as the largest disaster relief auction in the world, will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and
Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $16 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief
trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding in response to disasters ranging from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once. Children’s activities this year
will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a Phredd concert by WJTL personality Fred McNaughton. Other activities will include a car show, a tractor show and the Run for Relief, a 5K walk/run. There will be an area for venders of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh pro-
duce and baked goods, including hundreds of pies. Handmade onsite Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza will be available. Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, will feature a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, artisan bread, specialty nuts and items from various artists. For more details about the auction, readers may visit www.brethrenauction.org, call 717-723-6863 on the day of the auction or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.
