People Will Roar About Lions’ Chicken Potpie BY COURTNEY MENGEL

n the Lions Club International’s early years, Helen Keller was one of the first speakers to address the members, and she said she needed “knights of the blind.” Ever since, one of the core efforts of the Lions has been to help those who are visually impaired. Next year will mark the 75th year that the Mountville Lions Club has served the community. Proceeds from the club’s fundraisers go toward specific nonprofits and projects. The Lions help maintain the pavilion at Mountville Park, contribute to scholarships for Hempfield High School graduates, and support the Beacon Lodge, a nonprofit camp in Union County that offers programs for those who are blind or physically challenged in other ways. In addition to the Beacon Lodge, the club supports other programs that help people with vision impairment. Every year for over 60 years, the club has sold its homemade chicken potpie on the third Saturday of

I

March and October. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lions were unable to host three of these major fundraisers. On Saturday, Oct. 16, however, the Mountville Lions Club will bring the event back in an adjusted format, hosting a takeout chicken potpie sale at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. The sale will run from 10 a.m. until sold out, which typically happens at about 5 p.m. The potpie will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. “We miss all the people in the Mountville community and seeing all the friends who support us,” said Lions Club and chicken potpie committee member Jeff Weinman. The Lions go through about 400 pounds of chicken, 300 pounds of potatoes, and 175 pounds of flour. Takeout containers will be provided, and there will be no dine in option due to COVID-19 restrictions and the changing demographic of the club. In addition to chicken potpie, there will be homemade cakes and pies for sale as well as Lions brooms made by local Amish craftspeople.

Residents are encouraged to submit feedback online and attend council meetings to share input in person. Based on initial guidance from the U.S. Treasury Department, ARPA funds can be used in a few main ways: responding to COVID-19 and its negative economic impacts, replacing lost municipal revenue, and water and sewer infrastructure and broadband investments. Funds need to be committed by the end of 2024 and spent by the end of 2026. Funding decisions will not be made all at once.

storyteller, a husband, and the father of four girls. Needless to say, he’s a pretty busy guy. Armstrong’s schedule, however, didn’t stop him from writing another book - a book completely different from his first publication. Almost two years ago, Armstrong came across an article about Smart Dust - the world’s smallest radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip, measuring 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. By combining the chip’s compactness and wireless communication with internet technology, Smart Dust could be used for security, transportation, entertainment, traceability, logistics, and more. Armstrong couldn’t believe that such a thing has existed for the past 20 years, so he decided to learn more. One thing led to another, and soon enough, Armstrong found himself wondering, “What does it mean for us as a society to allow somebody or a group of people to have information about us without our consent?” For the past 18 months, Armstrong has explored this question by writing a book where the story itself is fictional, but

the technology is real. In Armstrong’s new book, “Smart Dust: The Dawn of Trans-Humanism,” the Smart Dust particles penetrate human skin, which enable trackers to monitor every moment of an individual’s day. Readers will be exposed to history, psychological warfare, and philosophy. By trans-humanism, Armstrong explained, “We’re on the edge of becoming human robotic AI counterparts.” He continued, “Like human 2.0 … that we’re no longer pure, but we’re a mixture of human technology and organic materials.” “In an age where sci-fi merges with reality by the day, we see the world in ‘Smart Dust’ is not too far away,” wrote Zachary Denman, a filmmaker in the United Kingdom, who reviewed the book. “This is an AI horror story, which no one can truly comprehend, not even the creators of it.” A sequel is already in the works. “Smart Waves” will be about frequencies that affect a person’s mood that were used during the Iraq War. Copies of “Smart Dust: The Dawn of Trans-Humanism” will be available to purchase on Amazon.

Wright and Mimnall said they hope attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of Columbia’s rich past. “The tour is equally historical and theatrical,” Mimnall explained. “It’s mostly on the historical side, with some subtle jump scares, but nothing too scary.” Reservations are recommended for the tour, although walk-ins will be accepted if space allows. To reserve tickets, call Holly at 717-587-5368.

Over the years, Columbia has experienced its fair share of tragedy. There was the burning of the Columbia Opera House, deaths on Wright’s Ferry, a deadly trolley crash and the famous burning of the ColumbiaWrightsville Bridge. Rivertown Theatre Productions will bring this spooky history to life during Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour. Tours will be given every half-hour between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 15, 16, 22 and 23, as well as every halfhour between 6 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17. Tours will leave from the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St. The tour is billed as “theater in the street,” and it features a cast of about 25 costumed characters. This year’s theme is “Unfortunate Events.” “One of the stops will be the dungeons below the Columbia Market House,” said Rebecca Wright, who co-owns Rivertown Theatre Produc-

tions with Sara Mimnall. While the market has been beautifully renovated, the dungeons have not been touched since they were used to house inmates many years ago. “They are historically accurate, right down to the chains used to hold prisoners,” Wright noted, adding that they make the perfect creepy setting for a tour stop. Additional stops will include the old Becker’s Chip Factory, as well as Art Printing Company, located in the historic Miller Mansion, where Rivertown Theatre Productions has its home base. “The Becker’s Chip Factory is a brand-new, never-beforeseen stop on our tour,” Wright noted, adding that it will be transformed into Black’s Hotel for the event. Tourgoers will also be able to ride the Rivertowne Trolley for part of the tour. This is the fifth year for the Haunted Lantern Tour, and Mimnall said it’s a unique event. “One of the things that sets us apart is that we talk as if the events are happening

“Going into the season, we thought defense was going to be a strength for us,” said head coach Mark Ashley. “We have three seniors - Caden Bonner, Gunner Schwanger, and Andrew Potter - who have been solid defenders in the back. We’ve also been able to rotate in underclassmen to supplement and support those guys.” Relying on the three senior backs along with central defensive midfielder Luke Kramer could be among the reasons for the success on defense. Spooky season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with a Halloween Tour? Create Columbia will host the tour of nine locations throughout Columbia on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 3 to 8 p.m. Tickets will be available on the day of the event at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 2:30 to 6 p.m. “This is a self-guided tour,” said Denise Brubaker, who is organizing the event with Kay Leader. “The tickets will include a brochure with the addresses and summaries of each place.” Leader suggests that tourgoers begin their tour in the dungeons below the market house, noting that two people will be in the dungeons to give tours of the historic site. From there, the tour will feature a mix of private homes and other locations. “We are hoping to do this tour year after year,” she said of the first-year event.

The idea for the Halloween Tour came up at a meeting for members of Create Columbia, a group dedicated to promoting the arts in the town. “It was actually my idea,” said Denise. “I thought, ‘Lots of towns do Christmas tours. Why don’t we do a Halloween tour?’” Denise and her husband, Gary, are the perfect couple to host a spot on the tour. “I have a room downstairs in my house that’s decorated for Halloween year-round, and it’s been that way for 15 years,” Denise said. While Denise came up with the idea for the tour, Gary is the bigger Halloween fan in the family. He collects Halloween decorations, which are displayed throughout the Brubakers’ house. “It reminds me of the 1950s when I was growing up,” Gary explained, adding that many of the items in his collection came from his mother and others have been picked up at auctions or sales over the years. Stops on the tour will fea-

increase safety, and the launch of a new Economic Empowerment program. For more information on the DVAM events, visit https://caplanc.org/dvam/.

The helicopter first served with C Company of the 101st Aviation Battalion before being involved in an accident that necessitated repairs. In late 1969, the Huey went to the 170th Assault Helicopter Company, where it primarily brought troops in and out of combat landing zones and did some cross- border flights into Cambodia. After being used in Vietnam, the Huey was flown to the Fort
