When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’” Becoming an author wasn’t a straight course for Gerritsen, who will headline the Council of Friends of Public Libraries’ fall author event at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9.

“Being from a practical AsianAmerican family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996. At the beginning of the year, Chase Morris of Manor Township noticed his dogs investigating an area in his backyard. Morris and his mother approached the dogs to find them sniffing around a litter of rabbits. Upon further inspection, they noticed one of the rabbits was injured; Morris’ mother looked up the nearest animal rescue, and the pair escorted the bunny safely to Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation in Millersville. A few months later, Morris, who is now in 11th grade at Penn Manor Chase Morris (right) and Betsy Shank with Acorn Acres’ animal ambassador Snags the squirrel

Eagle Scout from pg 1 High School, achieved the rank of Life Scout as a member of BSA Troop 349 in Mountville. Since Life Scout is the title before the final rank of Eagle Scout, Morris started to consider what his Eagle Scout service project would be, and he remembered Acorn Acres. “I thought, ‘Hey, why don’t we do the project there?’” Morris said. “I know they could use the help.” Morris then reached out to Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director, Betsy Shank, who gave the young Scout a list of potential projects that would benefit the rehabilitation center. Morris decided his project would be to build a groundhog enclosure at Acorn Acres. The organization specializes in the rescue and rehabilitation of small animals such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs, and its late mascot,

Poppy the groundhog, achieved national fame after she co-starred with Bill Murray in a commercial for the National Football League’s championship game in 2020. The enclosure will provide more space for Acorn Acres to rehabilitate groundhogs and house them for an extended period of time. Currently, the facility is only large enough to keep rescued groundhogs on-site short-term. For the first stage of the project, Morris is seeking the resources necessary to complete the enclosure. Although Acorn Acres held a fundraiser in memory of Poppy earlier this year, Morris is in search of donations from local businesses and organizations so the rescue center can save its money for unexpected costs. Morris currently has one-fifth of the

funds required to complete the project. In addition to the financial resources, Morris is also searching for donations of supplies such as pressuretreated lumber, steel roof panels, wire fencing and concrete mix. “The biggest thing is the fencing,” Morris said. “As we know, groundhogs like to dig. The fencing will help to stop them from digging into the ground and escaping the enclosure.” Morris hopes to complete his Eagle project by the spring of 2024 so it can be ready for groundhogs that will begin to emerge after hibernation. Morris is also seeking volunteers with constructionrelated experience to assist with the project, but anyone who is willing to help is invited to reach out. To contact Morris, call 717-725-7298.

This will be the 10th year that LCFMC has hosted the Fall Harvest Rock and Mineral Festival. The club was founded by Catherine Haefner and her husband, Chris; Catherine serves as the organization’s treasurer, and Chris acts as its president.

“We didn’t have a rock and mineral club in Lancaster before this. We wanted to serve people in the community with a passion for earth and mineral sciences and provide a place to collaborate with fellow rockhounds,” Catherine said. Catherine added she has had an interest in geology since she was a child. She credited the origin of her hobby to her father, who shared his fascination with minerals and rock tumbling. Chris comes from a long line of rockhounds; he has five family members who are geology professors. LCFMC members meet at Trinity Reformed Church on the last Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. The club also organizes annual rock and mineral shows, where participants can have specimens analyzed or buy new pieces for their collection. The shows are often attended by more than 900 geology enthusiasts. Those interested in joining LCFMC are invited to attend one of its meetings or contact Catherine at 717917-5442.

Festival from pg 1 Ladies’ Guild will sell food such as chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs and baked goods. Those attending the festival are invited to bring rocks, minerals and fossils to receive a free specimen analysis from expert geologists and paleontologists.

Author from pg 1 She had started following her heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said. She took what she knew from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles” series, focused on a partnership between two crime-solving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name. Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her November talk, where she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar. “I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh. “What I like to talk about is, ‘Where do ideas come from? What is my process of approaching writing a new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’” Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the Council of Friends. “When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early

passion manifested itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.” Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder. One reader told her he’d been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do work for your own family circumstances. Carve out some time to do it.’” The Council of Friends event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Tickets will include a copy of “The Spy Coast” and may be purchased at https://lancasterlibraries.org/ fall-author-event.

sources. Thanksgiving Exposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul to the Gutenberg Press on to England. On the way, it includes a replica of the Wittenberg doors, which guests step through to move into the Reformation and on to Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists. Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. It tells the Pilgrim story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland, and their voyage to the New World. It’s an enjoyable fundraiser for us to put together, and it’s fun for people to come to and shop.” The bazaar will be held in the social hall at the rear of Historic Salem United Church of Christ, 324 Walnut St., Columbia, on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re going to have toys and Christmas items, handmade plushies, prints and notecards from the Joseph W. Creativity will be on display - and for sale - when Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church hosts its annual bazaar on Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4. It will be held at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. “Most of the things we sell are handcrafted,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. “There’s a core group of us, about five or six of us, who meet throughout the year. Once a month, we get together and work on craft projects, and some people do crafting at home.” The bazaar will feature crocheted items for sale, along with beaded jewelry, a variety of ornaments, gift tags and gift bags, memo pads and notebooks, Christmas wreaths and arrangements and more. Birdhouses, handcrafted by a church member and featuring old license plates as roofs, will also be sold. “We have a bunch of wooden things, including some new

items and some old favorites,” Eshleman stated. “We make wooden bears each year in three different sizes, and they are very cute and usually sell out. We have pumpkins, turkeys, penguins, owls and snowmen. There are just lots of cute things to decorate your house with.” This year, the bazaar committee will sell tickets for a giveaway of a unique chair. “It is a repurposed wood chair made from an old door,” Eshleman explained. “It would look great on a porch, in an entryway or mudroom.” A white elephant area of the bazaar will feature jigsaw puzzles, books, decorations, games and other gently used items. “Everything is priced very reasonably, and this area is also very popular,” Eshleman said. “There’s always something different there. You never know what you’re going to find.” Food is also a large part of the event, she noted. “We will have cold soup and barbecue to go,” she shared,
