am Fields has lived in Lancaster County his whole life, but he only came to the Hempfield School District when he was in sixth grade. When he was in eighth grade, he was also on the wrestling team. Sam recalls discussing with his mother, Emily Fields, the idea of doing something year-round and outside of school with the wrestling team. This was how Wrestlers Helping Others (WHO) was born. The goals of WHO are to promote team bonding and teamwork as well as make a positive impact on the local community through service. As the founder of WHO, Sam organizes, leads, and facilitates service projects for Hempfield wrestlers to volunteer with community service and nonprofit organizations in Lancaster County. Members of WHO typically complete community service projects every month. The first project Sam coordinated was for Night to Shine, where WHO members helped set up a prom-like

“I love volunteering and I love helping others, so anything I can do in that area, I’ll try my best to continue.” WHO has made a big impact in Sam’s life. “I’ve reached out to and connected with people I wouldn’t have otherwise,” he said. “I’ve gone to places I wouldn’t have gone to otherwise. I found out about all of these organizations within Lancaster I didn’t even know existed.” Sam noted

For the past 116 years, Water Street Mission (WSM), located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, has provided men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County with access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support. As a religious organization, one of the goals of WSM is to give people a sense of hope and healing so they can find restoration with God.

that although he may not continue wrestling after graduating from Hempfield High School, he will continue helping others. “I love volunteering and I love helping others, so anything I can do in that area, I’ll try my best to continue,” he stated. W henever Sam plans a new project for WHO, he posts it on the wrestling Facebook page. To stay up to date on WHO, search for “Hempfield Wrestling” on Facebook. “In the end, even though some of the projects might not be the most fun while doing them, they definitely help others, and at least in my opinion, it feels good to do something like that,” said Sam. Geology Rocks: Fossil And Mineral Club To Host Fall Show

The Discovering Earth’s Wonders Fall Show will showcase a variety of specimens, with an assortment of hot food for sale as well.

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. LCFMC will host its seventh annual Discovering Earth’s Wonders Fall Show. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Those who attend will

see unique fossils, trilobites, Paleozoic wonders, gems, jewelry, minerals, and crystals from Pennsylvania and beyond. Many of the items included in the show have been collected by LCFMC members. Specimens will be displayed for perusal or purchase at discounted prices. There will also be free “ask the experts” analysis to identify special specimens. “This event is held each year just for our local friends and neighbors,” said club founder Chris Haefner. “They can come and find out about the club in a fun-filled environment.”

Football Players Honor Teachers

Proceeds from the food drive will help provide meals for people experiencing homelessness and also support the Outreach Center.

Sixteen Hempfield High School senior football athletes demonstrated their appreciation to teachers through a unique jersey presentation. Organized by Hempfield head football coach George Eager, the “My Jersey, Your Impact” recognition event provided each senior football player the opportunity to personally recognize a teacher who has made a positive impact on their life. The student-athletes walked through the hallways of the

Fall Show from pg 1 There will also be children’s activities, and a variety of hot food, provided by the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ Guild, will be available for purchase. Haefner noted that he is most looking forward to enjoying an in-person event with good conversation and good food. The show entrance will be in the rear of the church building. Tickets for the show can be purchased on the day of the event. Admission for kids age 5 and under is free. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral

Club” on Facebook. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and out-of-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps Scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free. For instance, the Pequea Silver Mines is just one of the several places where geology is taught to local school districts. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for Scouts, and more.

Every year, people take part in this, so they’re helping us in more ways than one. On Monday, Nov. 1, WSM will launch its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) with the goal of collecting over 70,000 pounds of nonperishable food - which would weigh roughly the same as 24 cars - by Sunday, Dec. 19. Proceeds from RMFD will go in two directions: providing meals for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and also supporting the Outreach Center, a food distribution center for neighbors of WSM. The Outreach Center provides grocery assistance to over 2,000 individuals and families, sharing roughly 646,000 pounds of groceries with the community each year. According to Dan Siewart, vice president of community ministries and outreach, WSM serves food to about 300 families every week. Therefore, the food collected during RMFD is instrumental in meeting the needs of the community, especially as the winter season nears. This winter, WSM estimates it will serve nearly 45,000 meals in its dining hall for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. The Blue Streaks (5-3, 2-1 league) came into the game having outscored their two previous Section One foes by a collective score of 9021. In those victories, Township quarterback Hayden Johnson had completed 33-of-40 pass attempts for 440 yards, including five completions for 76 yards to Anthony Ivey in a 48-14 defeat of Penn Manor. “Defensively we came up with a good game plan,” said Hempfield head coach George Eager. “The key was to not allow Anthony Ivey to beat us. We tried to force them to run. They did attempt to run but found it difficult to do so.” The Black Knights, who improved to 5-3 (2-1 league) outgained the Streaks 368 to 145 in total yardage. Of those 368 yards, quarterback Cameron Harbaugh gained 85 on the ground and threw for 171 through the air. Harbaugh opened the scoring with a 10-yard dash to the endzone in the first quarter. The offensive line did its job and Cam threw a picture-perfect pass.” In this battle between two wellcoached teams, the difference in points came down to a third-quarter chip shot by Connor Briscoe. The Hempfield place kicker nailed a 22yard field goal to put his team ahead 17-7. Eager was asked how much the play of special teams mattered in a game like this.

Hempfield’s Grace Lehman split a pair of matches at the District Three AAA Singles Championships at Hershey Racquet Club on October 15; defeating Palmyra’s Nitya Patei, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round, but then losing to Anya Rosenbach of New Oxford, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarterfinals to see her season come to an end

“We talked about it all week,” he replied. “We knew we had to execute on special teams. Their play was tremendous. We had the field goal in the third quarter, and it proved to be the difference.” Though the Streaks did cut it to only three points with a third-quarter touchdown, those three points would be the margin of victory for the Knights. “We gave the defensive MVP to the entire defense,” Eager said. “The secondary did a great job against a tremendous receiver [Ivey]. When you force a team to be one-dimensional and have success in stopping that one dimension as well, then you’ve done a tremendous job.” TENNIS Grace Lehman took the court at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday, October 15, in the first round of the District Three Class-AAA singles championships. She defeated Nitiya Patel of Palmyra 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round, but fell short 6-3, 60 in her second-round match with New Oxford’s Anya Rosenbach later the same day. As a team, the Knights entered the district playoffs the number six seed. On Thursday, October 14, they faced Cumberland Valley in an opening-round match. The Eagles downed the Knights 3-2. The Hempfield twosome of Megan Wendell and Lydia Sullivan played an extraordinary match but fell short to their Cumberland Valley rivals 7-5, 6-4.

Lehman gained one of Hempfield’s team points with a 6-0, 6-0 number one singles win. Alex Gregory won at number three singles, posting a 6-2, 6-4. BOYS’ SOCCER Having already claimed the Section One trophy, the boys’ soccer team opened the L-L League playoffs with a convincing 2-0 defeat of Donegal on Saturday, October 16. The visiting Knights out-shot the Indians 12-1 with Ben Ammon and Nathan Leisure each netting one goal. Knights’ goalie Noah Felty needed to make that one save for a shutout. The win advanced Hempfield (12-4-1) into Tuesday’s league semis where they faced Manheim Central. The Barons were 4-1 winners over Section Four champ Pequea Valley in the quarterfinals. The Barons and Black Knights played 80 minutes of soccer and found themselves even at 1-1. Connor Caterbone’s goal in the 24th minute gave Central a 1-0 lead. Leisure scored the equalizer 10 minutes later and the score remained that way until the penalty shootouts, where Hempfield converted four kicks to only three by Central. The game-winning penalty shot actually came off the foot of Felty, who put the ball past his counterpart - Central goalie Dylan Smith. Leading up to the shootouts, Smith had played an excellent match, making 16 saves.

will include hot dogs and homemade macaroni and cheese, along with chips and soda. A free hot dog will be offered to all children age 10 and under. Homemade baked goods, prepared by church members, will be for sale as well. On both days, a craft show will feature items made by a committee of church members, who work on creating inventory year-round for the event. “We have a lot of fall and Christmas items,” Brooks noted. “We also have a lot of useful household items like tea towels, scrubbies and dishcloths.” Additional crafts for sale will include wreaths, snowman and other holiday décor, crocheted doll dresses and paintings by a local artist. Rounding out the activities at the event will be a yard sale, featuring a wide variety of gently used items, said Emmajane Davis. “There is something for everyone,” she noted. “We have clothing for all sizes, plus purses, shoes, kitchen items and household items.” All yard sale items are

donated by church members or friends and family of church members and are available for purchase by donation. The Country Fair and Market is a project of the Caring Hands and Hearts outreach committee at the church. “Our mission is to help anybody in need, whether they are a member of our church or a member of our community,” Davis explained. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s kitchen

fund and will go toward the purchase of a new stove. Davis said the Country Fair and Market offers a way not only to raise money for the church but also to help people connect with one another. “We will have tables set up for eating, but you can also just come in and sit and chat and enjoy the fellowship,” she said. “Everyone is welcome.” For more information on the Country Fair and Market, visit www.gumcmj.net or call the church at 717-653-5683.

Caring Hands and Hearts members (from left) Sue Kopp, Emmajane Davis, Hazel Hackley, Marcia Brooks and Linda Gockley show off some of the items that will be for sale at the Country Fair and Market.

Holiday Trains Ramble Planned The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host a Holiday Trains Ramble on Saturday, Dec. 4. Participants will begin the day with a ride through the Chester Creek Valley on the West Chester Railroad’s Santa Express Train, enjoying live entertainment and a box lunch. Following the train ride, travelers will depart for the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station to begin a guided tour of “Underground Philadelphia: Subways, Railways & Stations.” Starting by trolley, then descending on foot into an underground concourse network, holiday ramblers will learn about the loss of the historic Broad Street Station, the 1905 to mid-1950s trolley and subway lines, the Broad Street subway, the Commuter Rail Terminal, and the former Reading Terminal. The tour will conclude at the Reading Terminal Market, where travelers will enjoy some free time and purchase dinner on their own. The last stop of the day will be the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania to view its garden railway display, which includes a quarter mile of tracks featuring model trains on multiple loops, tunnels, bridges, and rail lines. The display will feature holiday decorations.

The cost of the outing includes lunch. Current Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania members will receive a discount. The deadline for registration is Saturday, Oct. 30. Spaces are limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration form and Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania membership applications are available at www.rrmuseumpa.org.
