Every November, Clyde Snyder embarks on a mission to honor veterans by setting up hundreds of flags on Wilson Drive from Columbia Avenue to Marietta Avenue. From Tuesday, Nov. 8, to Tuesday, Nov. 15, Snyder will
Flags For The Fallen
display 1,600 American flags as his way of paying respect to those who have served in the military, as well as to remind people of the meaning of Veterans Day.
“I want people to think about what the flag represents and means. I want to put it in the back of people’s minds,” said Snyder. Snyder, who is a veteran himself and served with the Army in Vietnam, started the tradition of displaying the flags eight years ago for Veterans Day and sets up another display every Memorial Day.
Snyder is involved with many other projects of similar motivation in and around Lancaster County. In 2010, he founded the Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard, a group whose mission is to provide a rifle salute free of charge for local veterans’ burials. The Vet 21 unit is on a rotation with two other guard units at the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
Every three weeks, the Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard stays at the memorial from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and makes arrangements for the proper procedures when a veteran
passes away. This includes completing a rifle salute during the service, and a member of the same military branch as the deceased folds an American flag and gives it to his or her next of kin, along with three shell casings. Each shell casing represents a different ideal: duty, honor and country. Snyder
estimated that Vet 21 has honored over 7,000 veterans over the last 12 years.
Snyder is also involved with a Christmas tribute to veterans through Wreaths Across America, an organization that coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at locations across the country during the
holiday season. On Saturday, Dec. 17, the tribute will be held adjacent to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial at noon. During the event, over 45,000 wreaths will be placed on the graves at the cemetery, and Snyder will play taps for families. To sponsor a wreath for the event, visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

During the first session, the series will explain what it calls the “holiday survival guide” and emphasize the importance of allowing yourself permission to be in your current place with the process of mourning. “The holidays are a family-oriented time full of traditions that people likely shared with loved ones,” said Elaine Ostrum, adult services coordinator for the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss.
“People may not have the energy or interest in those things they’ve done in years past.” Many people dealing with losses that occurred around the holidays are reminded of those they lost when the season comes around again. Coping With the Holidays seeks to affirm those choosing to handle the holiday season in the way they see fit.
The second week of the series, which will fall on the week of Thanksgiving, will focus on how to practice gratitude in everyday life, even in the face of grief. In its third session, the group will discuss ways
to remember loved ones and honor their memory over the holidays. Participants will be invited to share their own ideas on how to honor the traditions of late family members; some people make a special ornament for their Christmas tree, and others make a donation to a charity each year in a loved one’s name.
In December, the fourth meeting will elaborate on how to live in the present and not be overwhelmed by the future. “We can get lost in overwhelming emotions as we think ahead,” said Ostrum. “We want to share reminders to keep us in the present moment and focus on what we need today.”
Coping With the Holidays will conclude with its final session, which will raise the question, “What are the gifts?” Participants will talk about how to recognize the positive aspects of each holiday, discuss what they’ve learned through the program and share stories about how they’ve grown since the first session.

In the first round of the District Three Class 4A girls’ volleyball playoffs, the Hempfield Black Knights downed Cedar Crest 3-0, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Hempfield (14-1) hosted the opening-round match, which was played on Tuesday, October 25, representing the top seed in the district while the Falcons (9-8) came in as the 16th-ranked team.
Following an opening set in which the Knights were challenged before earning a 25-20 win, they went on to post 25-5 and 25-9 winning sets.
TENNIS
Sophie Carson and Alex Gregory posted a 6-2 victory in the second set of their District Three 3A doubles match against Palmyra’s Marissa Nicholson and Nitya Patel.
The Palmyra pair had won a close opening set 6-3 and came back to eke out a 7-6 win in the tiebreaker, ending the Hempfield twosome’s quest for a district medal.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Hempfield advanced to the District Three Class 4A boys’ soccer quarterfinals with a 4-0 defeat of Red Lion on Tuesday, October 25, at Landisville.
The Knights (12-3-2) used their precision passing and strong defense to earn this win. Goalie Matt Roth was not tested much by the Lions’ attackers.
“Our defense limited Red Lion’s shots on goal,” head coach Mark Ashley said. “Matt was not called upon much to make saves. He was able to distribute the ball for us as we would play it back to him. We were able to stifle their attack and switch the field on them. We figured that would be an effective strategy - quick switches of the field.”
Hempfield, the No. 2 seed, scored twice in the first half with Devin Schmitt putting his team ahead on a perfectly-timed header.
“Brady King had a direct kick and he played it to their keeper,” Ashley explained. “Devin Schmitt got in front of their keeper and was able to skim it off his head just enough to redirect the ball into the net.
“It as a great service by Brady and great timing by Devin,” Ashley added.
King scored the team’s second goal, scoring off a Ben Ammon corner to give Hempfield a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Knights’ third goal demonstrated a true team effort for scoring.
“Ben Singizwa received the ball at his feet, one-touched it to Ben
Ammon and to Schmitt,” Ashley explained. “Schmitt hit it off the far post and it bounced in front of the net. Ben Singizwa finished it off the rebound.
“We really have been working on our players playing one- and twotouch passes and not doing a lot of dribbling,” added Ashley.
The fourth goal was a combined effort with Kena Bekere sending a cross to Diellon Trinaku.
The win advanced them to the quarterfinals against seventh-seeded Dallastown.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Having lost to Manheim Township twice during the regular season, 6-0 and 4-0, the Hempfield girls’ soccer team came into its opening-round match of the district playoffs determined to give the Blue Streaks a true battle.
“Our girls came out and executed the game plan,” Jason Mackey, the Hempfield head coach, said. “We wanted to take away a couple of key things we thought Township did to be successful. They have so many dangerous weapons, you can’t take them all away.”
Among those dangerous weapons was Liza Suydam. She scored in the final minute of the first half to give the Streaks a 1-0 halftime lead as Township, the top-seed in the District Three Class 4A playoffs, went on to post a 3-1 victory at home on Tuesday, October 25.
“The girls did such a great job keeping it scoreless until they scored with 18 seconds left in the half,” Mackey explained. “But in terms of coming out in the second half, the girls didn’t let it affect them.”
Township doubled its lead to 2-0 only to have Hempfield slice the lead in half.
Maya Trowbridge made it a 2-1 game. But it wasn’t enough as the Streaks added a third goal on a penalty kick.
The Knights (7-11) entered the playoffs as the 16th seed. They will say goodbye to goalkeeper Emileigh Antesberger and defender Blythe Jacobs.
“Obviously, we won’t lose many seniors,” Mackey said of his roster that has a dozen juniors. “We do lose a vast degree of experience and the roles they played. Blythe has been one of the best defenders in the league and Emileigh was consistent in her years playing for us.
“We’re hoping our big junior class, as they move into their senior year, can take their experience and build on that for next year,” continued the coach.
FOOTBALL
The Black Knights notched their first shutout of the year. After dominant wins over McCaskey and Penn Manor with final scores of 42-7 and 34-7, respectively, Hempfield’s defense didn’t allow anything in the 24-0 Section One win at Cedar Crest on Friday, October 21.
“The defense played really well,” head coach George Eager said. “Scheme was to provide run support on early downs to hopefully force third-and-long situations. When we did get them into third-and-long, we were able to bring pressure, which worked well for us.
“The defense created turnovers, which is big at any level,” continued
the coach. “If our defense continues to play well, we can win any game we play.”
Jackson Landis threw two touchdown passes as he completed 14-of23 pass attempts for 149 yards. He connected with Gabe Benjamin for a 19-yard TD toss in the second quarter. He also hit Julian Morales for a 24-yard score in the third. Morales finished with 65 yards on four receptions.
On the ground, Grant Hoover gained 82 yards on 18 carries and Hempfield’s one rushing TD. Stephen Katch compiled 65 yards on nine carries while Landis gained 34 on three attempts.
The Knights (7-2) took a 10-0 lead into the locker room at halftime on Benjamin’s touchdown and a 36-yard field goal by Cannon Biscoe.
Hempfield improved to 5-0 in the L-L League (7-2 overall). With Manheim Township and Wilson both at 4-1 in section play, Hempfield has the head-to-head edge over those opponents.
“With a chance to win the section crown, it’s something the team will dwell on more so after the season because right now we are focused on the next game,” Eager said.
As for the next game, following the regular-season finale with Reading, the Knights hope to have good seeding in the District Three 6A playoffs. They found themselves seeded second behind Central York (8-1) following the win at Crest.

In early January, Clyde Snyder of Lancaster Township was asked by the president of Vietnam Veterans of America whether there were any Merchant Marines buried in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Snyder, who founded the Vet21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster, looked into the situation, and when he learned there were 90 Merchant Marine veterans there, he did the research and raised the money to place a Merchant Marine monument. The ceremony dedicating that memorial was held on June 4.
In April, Snyder learned that no memorial to Vietnam veterans existed in the cemetery. “I said, ‘I’ve got to do this for my brothers,’” recalled Snyder, who set about raising the $7,700 needed to fund the memorial under the sponsorship of Blankets of Honor, a nonprofit that presents veterans with blankets depicting the branch they served in.
On Oct. 8, at noon, a ceremony was held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to dedicate the memorial. The event opened with a flyover by the Liberty War Bird Association Huey, a

restored Vietnam helicopter now operating as a flying museum based at the Lancaster Airport. Mike Caimi, one of the founders of the Liberty War Birds, noted that taking part in the flyover fulfills goals of the organization. “The mission of the Liberty War Bird Association is to honor the legacy of our Vietnam veterans and provide a healing link to their past,” explained Caimi. “What better way to accomplish that goal than to participate in the dedication of the Vietnam veterans’ memorial at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, a hallowed site where not only are a number of Vietnam veterans buried, but two of our own recently deceased volunteers have been interred?” Caimi reported that he was on board for the flyover. “It was a solemn moment for our flight crew,” he recalled.
Amanda Spangenberg played the bagpipes and Snyder spoke. Manny Acuna of Blankets of Honor also spoke. Acuna later reflected on the importance of the memorial at the Vets Breakfast Club event in Bird-inHand on Oct. 15. “This monument (was) dedicated to you guys who served and the ones who didn’t come home,” he said, recalling the event. “On my way home (from the dedication), I just cried because you guys don’t have that recognition, (but) every day that we can give you that recogni-
tion is a day that we can say, ‘Welcome home.’”
The invocation and prayer was given by the Rev. Grover DeVault, a Vietnam veteran. Speakers also included Vietnam veteran Chieu V Le,

money raised this year will be used for a few different projects that the church is undertaking, such as switching internet providers and purchasing equipment for its new pastor, Jared Stoltzfus. The new provisions will allow Stoltzfus to livestream worship services from Ironville UMC’s website.
“Our goal of setting up the livestream is to continue to be present in the community,” said Stoltzfus. “We want to be connected and help people
that are looking for a church to find one.” Stoltzfus became Ironville UMC’s pastor in July of this year. “It’s been wonderful to get to know the Columbia area and community,” he added. “There’s always a learning curve when you’re transferred to a new church, but I’m looking forward to meeting more people and engaging the community.”

Bazaar Will Offer A Little Bit Of Everything
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Come to the Olde Salem Craft Bazaar, and you never know what you might find. “We always have such an eclectic mix of vendors - a children’s author, blacksmith crafts, jewelry and ornaments, pour painting, award-winning chili, Mary Kay rep. We have something for everyone,” said Denise Bollinger, bazaar team member. The bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, in the social hall at the rear of Historic Salem United Church of Christ, 324 Walnut St., Columbia.
Craft items are handmade by church members, said Hilary Smith, bazaar team member. “It’s always a nice variety of fall and Christmas items and a lot of gift items,” she said.
New this year, the bazaar will feature local children’s book author Shelleen Weaver, who will be selling and signing the first three books of her “Fruit Fables” series. The stories use the adventures of talking animals to discuss the godly character traits Paul talks about in Galatians 5:22-23, known as the “fruit of the spirit.”
Along with vendors, the bazaar will feature giveaway baskets showcasing a variety of themes, including Pennsylvania sports teams, kitchen and household goods and family night out/family night in, Smith stated. “We also have local gift cards to Columbia and Wrightsville businesses,” she noted.
Lots of food will be for sale at the bazaar as well, Smith said, including pretzel sandwiches, hamburger barbecue, stuffing balls with or without gravy, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut and baked goods, including peanut butter balls, cheesecake, cookies and mini apple pies. Chicken corn soup, bean soup and tomato bisque soup will be featured. “Our soups are a big hit,” Smith remarked. “We usually sell out.” Homemade chili will be available to go. All other food items will be available for eat-in or takeout.
Proceeds from the bazaar will be used for ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the church property, Smith said, noting that the church currently has a few big projects in the works.
Pictures of craft items and giveaway drawing basket items are available at www.historicsalemucc.org or may be found on the church’s Facebook page by searching for “Historic Salem United Church of Christ, Columbia PA.” The church social hall may be accessed from the Burning Bridge Antique Market parking lot, 304 Walnut St.
