s of Nov. 2, the top five requests for 2-1-1 assistance in Pennsylvania were housing and shelter at 42.1%, utilities at 17%, health care and COVID-19 assistance at 10%, employment and income 8.7%, and food at 6.2%. Hundreds of nonprofit organizations exist in Lancaster County specifically to meet these and other needs. For instance, Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Tenfold - an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020 - offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County

ed portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. Each participating nonprofit has its own profile on the ExtraGive website, and some include a nondiscriminatory policy, which is a new feature. “This is a nice addition because it helps people know that

residents. The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. This platform, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is celebrating its 10th year in 2021. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorat-

their values are reflected in the organization to which they’re donating,” stated Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. From 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 19, LCCF will host the ExtraGive Fest in Penn Square as it counts down the final hours of the event. Live music will be provided by DJ Salinger; Sir Dominique Jordan, The Prolific One; Adrian Garcia; and Mama Tried. There will be a local beer garden from Springhouse Brewing Company as well as local food popups from East King Street businesses, such as Tellus360, Blazin’ J’s, and New Holland Coffee Co. All are welcome to attend. Unvaccinated guests will be encouraged to wear masks. “The day is all about giving giving back to the nonprofits that serve our county,” said Cutler.

This holiday season, consider visiting and patronizing a church bazaar. The money you spend and the gifts you purchase contribute to the small-town holiday experience. Church bazaars are a tradition that bring in the gift-giving season. These events do much more than put shoppers in the spirit of the season; they also help sustain their host churches. The money the churches bring in is crucial to the operating budget. The 44th Christmas in the Country bazaar and craft show will be held at Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, which usually draws more than 1,000 shoppers, will feature more than 30 carefully selected vendors and crafters. Types of items that may be purchased at the bazaar and craft show will include wreaths, jewelry, artwork, knitted items, photographs, holiday and seasonal ornaments, and more. The Apostles Crafters will offer items that have been handmade through the past year. Prepackaged food, including homemade soups, pies, sandwiches, and beef barbecue, will be available for purchase in a bustling food court. “I am most looking forward to seeing many regular customers who we have not seen for two years,” said Clara Kosmela, bazaar supervisor. “People should attend the bazaar because it gives them an opportunity to buy unique Christmas gifts for others or decorations for their home. It

also gets you in the Christmas spirit.” There is no charge to attend Christmas in the Country, and there will be parking available at the church. Attendees will be required to wear masks, which will be available at the church. Crowd movement will proceed in one direction through the building, and the number of people who enter will be limited due to COVID19 precautions. Knights Fall in Semifinals, Prepare For States

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

The penalty shootout. You sometimes survive it and your supporters cheer while the entire team mobs either the goalkeeper for making a crucial save or tackles the teammate who scored in the final frame of the shootout round. You sometimes find yourself on the losing end as the spherical object rocketed toward the netting of your opponent somehow goes awry, hitting the goal post, sailing over the crossbar or actually being on target but landing in the grip of the goalie’s gloves. The Hempfield boys’ soccer team had already notched an overtime victory in the first round of the District Three Class 4A playoffs before facing and defeating a familiar foe Manheim Township - with an edgeof-your-seat penalty round at home on Saturday, October 30. The third-seeded Black Knights improved to 11-5-1 with that victory only to come up short in the semifinals - yet another shootout with second seed Dallastown. The Wildcats (19-2-1) and the Knights played through regulation and overtime deadlocked at 1-1 on Tuesday, November 2. “Our midfield moved the ball well in the second half and created a lot of chances,” head coach Mark Ashley said. “We scored in the second half and were all over them in the final 20 minutes - shots and corners - as well as overtime.” Nate Schwartz scored the equalizer in the second half. It was actually on a penalty kick called for a Wildcats hand ball in the box. In the shootout, the Wildcats prevailed 4-2 with Owen Peri scoring the clincher.

Michael Keene handles the ball for the Black Knights in their 1-0 (3-2 PK) District Three quarterfinal victory over Manheim Township at home on October 30.

Hempfield’s fate in terms of the PIAA 4A seeding in state playoffs doesn’t hinge on a third-fourth place consolation match. Rather, the team that lost to the eventual champion earns the third-place entry into the PIAA’s while the team that lost to the runner-up goes in as the fourth seed. Central Dauphin remained unbeaten (19-0-0) by topping Warwick 3-1 in the other semifinal match. In the Township game, goalie Noah Felty started with two saves while Schwartz and Nate Leisure put the Knights up 2-0 in the shootout. Township battled back, taking advantage of two Hempfield misses to make it 2-2. Both teams made their next shot. Ashley called on Felty to take the final shot, which he converted for the win. “You could say he was the ‘man of the hour,’” the coach quipped. Felty and teammate Gunnar Swanger played important defensive roles during regulation. “Noah played extremely well,” said Ashley. “He punched a ball over the top on a corner kick where one of their dangerous attackers could have headed it in. “Gunner was able to defend on a breakaway with a slide tackle just at the top of the 18,” he added. “It may have prevented a goal.” For more photos, see www.townlively.com FOOTBALL There were a number of motivations for the Hempfield football team as it faced Section One rival Penn Manor on Friday night, October 29. The Black Knights came into the game with a 5-4 record and, as most experts put it, “on the outside looking in.” Looking in at what? The District Three Class 6A playoffs. Therefore, earning a playoff berth was one motivation. “We talked about it all week, about having to win to get in,” head coach George Eager stated. “Also for our seniors it was a big game - for them to keep playing. Plus, it was the 462 battle, which we started last year. Any of those motivated us to play hard. Now it allows us to continue our season.” The “462 battle” refers to the highway that connects the two schools. Hempfield won this year’s battle, 27-0 at Penn Manor When the dust had settled, the Knights were no longer “looking in;” they were the sixth-seeded team in the field of eight qualifying for districts. “Central Dauphin was fifth and

they lost,” Eager explained. “Wilson and Township were playing each other the last game of the season. We knew with our strength of schedule, we had a chance.” With an offense that gained 349 yards and a defense that continued to play tough, the Knights walked off the field playoff bound. Juniors Stephen Katch and Grant Hoover combined for 278 rushing yards. Organization Plans To Expand Into Lancaster BY ANN MEAD ASH

Sandra Jones and Paul Zenone’s first date in May of 2019 was a little unusual. “Our first date was a community meal,” recalled Zenone. The second date was even more unusual. “Our second date was a hike where we saw people living in homeless camps and under bridges,” he noted. From that beginning, Jones and Zenone have created Providing Hope, an organization that provides clothing and food to the homeless in the Reading area on a weekly basis, with the help of about 20 volunteers. Zenone and Jones first connected when Jones, who grew up in the Donegal area, saw an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for homeless people in Reading. She reached out to Zenone, who had placed the ad, and the pair began serving the homeless community together. On Sept. 17, 2020, Providing Hope celebrated

its second anniversary as an organization. The pair now works with several Lancaster County food stores, including the Grocery Outlet Bargain Markets. Their first partnership was with Justin and Ellie Maenner, who own the Spring Valley Road store, purchasing items at a deep discount. They have also partnered with Heather and Mike Cherasaro, who own the Lincoln Highway East store, and the couple works with the Manheim Grocery Outlet store. “They reached out to us when we opened the store in April 2020,” recalled Heather, who noted that an oatmeal manufacturer had printed the wrong expiration date on its product. “It wasn’t expired, but we weren’t going to sell it, so we said, ‘Here you go,’” said Heather. Providing Hope holds a food distribution on Court Street in Reading each Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. The giveaway includes 15 food items. On Mondays, Providing Hope makes a snack bag run

through the city with regular stops. To help homeless Reading residents to know where they can shower or do laundry, Providing Hope has created a flyer in English and Spanish that lists days of the week and locations of services. Now, the couple hopes to provide similar help in Lancaster County, where Jones, who works with autistic children, is already storing some of the clothing bank items she has collected. “At our house we have bins for male and female winter and summer shirts from small to extra-

large,” said Jones. “I store plus sizes and kids’ clothes at my parents’ house in Lancaster.” Zenone, who owns a flooring business, added that Readingarea nonprofits now reach out to Providing Hope when they need clothing for a client. Both Jones and Zenone welcome donations of food and clothing and volunteers. Readers who would like to know more about the organization or would like to indicate interest in helping it expand into Lancaster may search for “Providing Hope” on Facebook.

However, upon meeting a department store Santa whom she believes may be the real Kris Kringle, Susan takes New York City on a heartwarming journey that shows the difference one girl’s beliefs can make. Cella Berardi, debuting as Susan Walker, will employ her singing, acting and dancing skills for her first role on stage. Berardi’s association with the theater began last summer in Dutch Apple’s Theatre Camp, “Broadway Bound.” Dale Given, playing Kris Kringle, is back at Dutch Apple after his most recent performance playing various characters in “Grumpy Old Men.” Given also played Santa in last year’s production of “Elf.” There are separate prices for dinner and show tickets for adults, children under age 12 and students ages 13 to 18. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Prices will increase in the new year. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900.
