Schreiber Center Completes Portico, Plans Expansion
Taking Time For Worship And Gratitude
The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster Countybased provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrated the renovation of the front entrance of its building, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, with a ribbon-cutting event under the new portico on Nov. 14. Schreiber leaders and supporters gathered for the event, which was planned primarily to thank the community for supporting the project. Donors who contributed to the project and attended the ribbon-cutting event included Sally Buckwalter, Mark Simeral, and Rick and Nancy Price. The new front entrance cost $300,000, and Schreiber raised all the money from private sources. The work was completed in August.
“Godliness with contentment is great gain,” the Apostle Paul wrote in his first letter to his protégé, Timothy, and it has become one of the most famous Bible verses about contentment. The condition of being satisfied - contented - will be one of the themes of the Gathering of Worship and Gratitude hosted by churches in the Landisville-Manor District of LMC - a fellowship of Anabaptist churches, formerly known as Lancaster Mennonite Conference, on Sunday, Nov. 24. The night of worship, reflection, prayer, and Holy Communion will be held at 7 p.m. around the tables in the fellowship hall of East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg. Anyone interested in pausing during the busy holiday season is welcome to attend. In addition to contentment, the evening will explore commitment.
See Schreiber Center pg 8
During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 14, Schreiber Center president James DeBord thanked supporters who made possible the new portico, a project that sets up the next major construction plan for Schreiber: a three-story, $6 million expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space.

“ We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, noting that offering dignity, hope, and See Water Street Mission pg 9

LCHS To Stage “Little Women”
HEMPFIELD
By Ann Mead Ash
Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of “Little Women,” said that the play had been on her short list for many years. “I have always been a fan,” said Wagner. “It’s a classic that teenagers should know, and the themes are universal and lifelong.” In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Louisa May Alcott classic, which was written in two parts, Wagner has chosen the Thomas Hischak production to be staged at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 21, 22, and 23, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. “Little Women” is set in Massachusetts during the Civil War. It is the story of the March sisters and their mother, who are waiting for their father and husband, respectively, to return from battle. Jo, played by Bernadette Fertal, is the second to the oldest of the four sisters. In Hischak’s adaptation, Fertal will also play a character named Josephine, an older version of Jo, who serves as narrator. Along with her sisters, Meg, played by Aria Yang; Beth, played by Maddi Lewis; and Amy, played by Alexis Lenhart in Act 1 and Sheridan Riva in Act 2, Jo struggles with the limitations placed on her as a

A fan of both the book and movies, she was hoping to be cast in the lead. “I relate (to the character of Jo),” noted Fertal, who said one of her favorite scenes is between Beth and Jo just before Beth becomes sick. “The relationship between all the sisters is very close, but Jo’s bond with Beth is very special,” said Fertal. Other cast members include the girls’ mother, Marmie, played by Natalie Knox; Laurie, played by Aaron Kern; John Brooke, played by Xavier LeFevre; Aunt March, played by Jaime Ely; Hannah, played by Cassie Peris; Mr. Laurence, played by Oliver Klemmer; and Mr. March, played by Jim Mikulski. Wagner emphasized that the Hischak version of the play spotlights some of the most memorable moments of the novel, focusing on Jo’s journey growing up during the Civil War. Although many cast members were familiar with the story, understanding the differences between present-day life and daily living during the Civil War era has been a challenge. “We spent a lot of time thinking about what life was truly like then,” said Wagner. “We especially talked about how different it was for women.” Wagner also turned to Dana Kinsey, who teaches dramaturgy at LCHS. Her class members researched the era and created a reference binder for cast members to help immerse them in the time period. The heartwarming themes fans remember from the novel are present in the adaptation, according to Wagner, which highlights the March girls coming of age and finding romance, while

Hempfield Teams Fall in State Semifinals by Ara Grigorian
In a season where no opponent could find way to outplay Hempfield’s system in 21 matches, including league and district playoffs, it was the North Allegheny girls’ volleyball team that finally threw the Black Knights a curve at Altoona High School in the PIAA Class 4A state semifinals. The Tigers topped the Black Knights (21-1) and earned a trip to the state title match with Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory. The Tigers (21-1) opened with a 25-23 victory, squeezing past Hempfield in the first set. After the Tigers won 25-15, the Black Knights kept their season alive with a 25-21 victory in the third set. In the fourth set, the Tigers pulled ahead and went on to win by a 25-9 margin. It was a memorable season that saw the Black Knights claim yet another District Three title as well as a Lancaster-Lebanon League trophy to add to the program’s already impressive hardware. Jailene Lugo, one of the seniors leaving the program, put down a match-high 12 kills for Hempfield. Fellow senior Claire Flood had five aces to lead the team. Lugo and senior
Rachel Sipling registered two blocks each. Sophomore Allison Cummings led the team in digs with nine while junior Emma Bitner distributed 23 assists. GIRLS’ SOCCER On a chilly Tuesday night at Harriton High School, the District Three champion Black Knights faced District One runner up Boyertown in a PIAA Class 4A girls’ soccer semifinal match. In a 2019 postseason which has featured a handful of overtime matches, including two matches decided in penalty shootouts, and close contests by slim margins, it was no surprise that the game with the Bears ended with a 1-0 margin. Unfortunately for Hempfield (19-4-1) the one goal was scored by Boyertown junior Camilla Kuever, a 5-foot-11 exchange student from Germany, who redirected a corner kick with her head into the Knights’ net with 4:11 left to play in regulation. Offensively, the Black Knights equaled the Bears on shots on goal with five. Maddie Gallagher saved all five for Boyertown. For the most part, the Hempfield defense held off Kuever and Boyertown’s leading scorer Sam Goffice, preventing the freshman
phenom Antesberger from having to make more than four saves. “There was no saving that ball,” Hempfield head coach Jason Mackey said of the header off the corner. “They were able to eventually put one in, but our defense did a great job of containing their counter attack. We were limiting the number of dangerous opportunities. We knew they were a dangerous counter attacking team. When they did that, we were able to slow them down. “We made sure the defender on the ball was in good position and that our backs were where they needed to be - keep the play in front of them. The second defenders were also there in position in case their player was able to beat the first defender.” Mackey praised the goalkeeping of Antesberger for Tuesday night as well as remarking on her consistency and maturity all season long. “When they were able to get quality shots, our goalkeeper was able to make great saves,” he said. “I’ve had some great talented freshmen players at various positions. I’ve never seen a freshman step up like she has throughout the season. Emileigh not only improved drastically, but she maintained her confidence and made
huge plays at critical moments, playing perhaps the most important position on the field. She played like a senior.” Mackey w as asked to describe the run this team had - a team that will be losing 11 seniors to graduation. “We would love to be playing for the state title, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out that way,” he said. “Unity comes to mind. Whenever you make a run this far, it takes the entire team. Different people step up at different situations throughout the season. People’s roles change, especially in the playoffs. Every piece came together. We were able to peak at the right time. “The seniors we’re losing, if you’re looking at our playoff run, nine of them were starters,” continued the coach. “This was a very talented group. They had a competitive drive. This group had some inconsistency at the beginning of their junior year. They learned from that.”

WWI Drama from pg 1 Actors with ties to the Hempfield area will appear in and produce “All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914,” which will be presented by Red Accordion Studios at the Grace Church auditorium, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz, at 3 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 1 and 8. Studio owner and show director Jen Hartenstine Felty is a graduate of Hempfield High, where she performed in musicals and choirs directed by Alan Mudrick, who is part of the cast of “All Is Calm.” When Mudrick decided to retire last June, he was at the top of the list for Jen to call about being in the show. “Alan and I have worked together beyond my high school years and have kept in touch,” Jen said. “I knew his expertise in choral literature, combined with his rich singing voice, would be a needed element in our show. It took some convincing, but he (finally) jumped in.” “It’s such a great joy for me when former students become esteemed professional colleagues in musical endeavors,” Mudrick remarked. “I am so honored and privileged to have this opportunity to collaborate toward continuing our pursuit of excellence in the performing arts for the greater community.” The cast’s Hempfield contingent also includes graduates Jon Knauss and Joe Kelly and current student Noah Felty. Mountville Elementary School music teacher Johanna Baker, who is also a Hempfield graduate, is assisting Jen. Former Centerville Middle School history teacher Joel Mumma has served as the show’s historical consultant. Jen said Mumma has tirelessly answered her questions about the details of the war and the time period to ensure accuracy. “I was not a history fan, but Mr. Mumma, with his unrelenting enthusiasm, command for excellence, and care for his students, won me over, at least for my
eighth-grade year,” Jen remarked. “I see him yearly when I go to vote and so we’ve been in touch. He was a natural go-to for this.” The musical docu-drama captures an astounding moment during World War I when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate the holiday together. The true story is told in the words and songs of the men who lived it. The all-male cast of 12 will tell the story with spoken words and a capella songs in many different languages. The cast also includes Nate Garland, Michael Hudson, Seth Jarabek, Brayden Krikke, Michael Lapham, Wes Madara, Nolan Petrosky, and Adam Zembower. Tickets may be purchased at www.RedAccordionStudios.com. All seating is reserved. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-537-1347. Red Accordion Studios is a new theater company in the Lancaster/Lititz area that presents plays and musicals and provides theater arts education opportunities. Offerings include live musicals and plays, workshops in the theater arts, and cabarets and concerts. “All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914” was written by Peter Rothstein and is presented through special arrangement with Broadway Licensing. All authorized performance materials are also supplied by Broadway Licensing, 7 Penn Plaza, Suite 904, New York. Additional information is available at www.broadwaylicensing.com. Pictured on front:

Schreiber Center from pg 1 The project sets the stage for Schreiber’s next major construction project: a $6 million, threestory expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space to the current facility. “These are exciting times at Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “We are seeing more kids come through our doors every day, and thanks to many generous people in our community, we have been able to make some modifications to the center to try and keep up with the demand. But we are literally out of space. We need to expand, and we’re confident the community will rally behind us again so that we have the space we need to serve every family that needs us.” The project will create space and convert current administra-
tive offices into new areas for therapy. The new construction will feature an expanded physical therapy department that will include a treatment suite with state-of-the-art concussion protocol and traumatic brain injury therapies. A new eco-friendly therapy garden will be built next to the expanded building. Schreiber is in the process of obtaining the necessary municipal approvals to begin construction. A capital campaign is expected to begin in 2020. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is a nonprofit organization that strives to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. The Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, located on West Grant Street in Lancaster, has been bustling with activity since August. Local ballet dancers from Lancaster County have been meeting every Saturday to rehearse for the traditional Christmas ballet, “The Nutcracker.” This will be the 27th year for studio’s performance of “The Nutracker,” which will be held at the Lancaster Mennonite Performing Arts Center at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Friday, Dec. 6; Saturday, Dec. 7; and Sunday, Dec. 8. Viktor Yeliohin, ballet master and owner of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, will direct the show, which will include more than 80 local dancers. In addition to local talent, professional dancers for the Donetsk Ballet Company of Ukraine will appear on stage throughout the performance. They will be accompanied by
their director, Vadim Pisarev. For the past 26 years, the two groups have combined their talents and performance standards to showcase the ballet. At intermission, the ballet academy will collect donations for Relevé, a dance fundraiser to suppor the fight against children’s cancer, which will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at Franklin & Marshall College. All donations received during this year’s “Nutcracker” performances will go toward the 2020 fundraiser. The Barnstormers’ organization was feted for several community outreaches. One in particular was the Christmas Tree Lane presented by the BCF Group and the Christmas Spirit Light Show that was pioneered at Clipper Magazine Stadium during the 2018 holiday season, generating over $29,000 for local charities. Also factored into the honor were Thanksgiving and Christmas programs centered at Clipper Magazine Stadium that feed the hungry through the holiday season. Lancaster is also the site of a Camp Out for Homelessness event in conjunction with Tabor Community Services. Lancaster, in its 15th season in the Atlantic League, was also applauded by the league for the creation of the Little Sluggers’ Dugout, a private room for nursing mothers, sponsored by MayGrant Obstetrics and Gynecology. Mental health awareness also came to the forefront in May in a partnership with the Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital. Cylo also kept a busy schedule during the 2018-19 campaign, making 587 appearances outside of the confines of the stadium. Reynolds has dramatically increased season and group ticket sales since joining the Barnstormers for the 2017 season through innovative programs like seat wraps. He has overseen a surge in attendance that produced a rise of over 35,000 fans for 2019. It was also noted by White and the other club owners that Reynolds has spearheaded a sales initiative that provides training for all teams with a yearly seminar held in Lancaster. For more information about the Lancaster Barnstormers, readers may call 717-509-HITS (4487) or visit www.lancaster barnstormers.com.
