“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” - Psalm 107:1
Lions And Dayspring Unite For Upcoming Food Drive BY ANN MEAD ASH
Senior Daniel Haldeman (left) is a member of the Hempfield Magnet Makers, freshman Mallory Betts (center) is part of the Knights of the Red Tablet, and senior Lauren Elias is affiliated with The Grind.
A variety of handmade crafts will be available for purchase at the Hempfield Holiday Shoppe.
Hempfield Students To Host Holiday Shoppe or 18 years, several student-run mini businesses at Hempfield High School (HHS) participated in the annual LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit 13 holiday student bazaar. However, HHS staff realized that, because there were student-run mini businesses in classrooms throughout the Hempfield School District, they had enough classrooms to host a district-wide holiday craft show. After getting permission from the special education department, the inaugural Hempfield Holiday
F
Shoppe was held in 2016, and elementary students were able to sell their handcrafted items beside high-schoolers. HHS special education teacher Kristie Beatty noted that the craft show started in the board room at the district’s administrative building, but it quickly outgrew the space. “It attracts more and more people every year,” said Beatty. Like in 2019, the sixth annual Hempfield Holiday Shoppe will be held in the Franklin Gym of the HHS, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. The student craft show will be open to the public on Friday, Dec. 3. from 9:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Most of the Hempfield School District classrooms run craft businesses. For instance, senior Daniel Haldeman is a member of the Hempfield Magnet Makers. Daniel explained that he and his fellow members cut patterned fabric into a circle, glue glass on top of the fabric, and then glue a magnet on the opposite side of the fabric. There are several themed magnets, such as animals, sports teams, Christmas, and patriotic. New this year are the wooden magnets. At the craft show, people will be able to purchase individual magnets, or
they can mix and match six magnets to put in a holiday tin can. “People should attend to support everybody … all the businesses,” said Daniel. “It’s nice to see everyone.” Beatty’s classroom runs The Grind, which distributes coffee, tea, orange juice, and muffins to staff at the high school and in the administrative building every Friday. At the Hempfield Holiday Shoppe, students from Beatty’s classroom will sell tea, coffee, and orange juice, as well as doughnuts and muffins for breakfast, and then for lunch, they will serve hot dogs and chips. As it has for more than 30 years, the community of Columbia will lend a hand to those in need this Christmas season. The annual Christmas Food Box Delivery will take place on Sunday, Dec. 19. The effort is organized by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, and aid is also provided by area businesses and organizations and hundreds of volunteers. Each year, hundreds of boxes are packed with essential holiday dinner items and additional grocery staples. Each box contains a turkey, bread, milk, canned vegetables, cereals, and more. The method of packing the food boxes will be determined closer to the event to adhere to current COVID guidelines. Organizers will need many drivers to deliver the boxes on Dec. 19. Volunteer drivers should arrive at 11 a.m. at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, where they will be directed to line up for the touchless delivery system. Toys will no longer be delivered with the food boxes. Organizers encourage families to sign up for Toys for Toys or contact Hands Across the Street for toys. Organizers anticipate that 600 boxes will be packed and delivered to families in Columbia and the surrounding areas with ZIP codes 17512, 17547, 17368, 17554, 17582, 17575, and 17538. Instead of keeping them to a three-and-out right there, we got down 203 and with the momentum on their side.” Senior quarterback Cam Harbaugh, who finished with 130 yards passing on 15 completions, put the Knights in the endzone with a sevenyard scoring toss to Aidan Shorter in the fourth quarter. Harbaugh found Andy Garcia for six of his 15 completions and for 44 yards. Micah Gates had four catches for 37 yards while Tom Minnich grabbed three passes for 30 yards. Harbaugh added 43 rushing yards to his offensive contribution. Stephen Katch carried the ball 10 times for 41 yards and Grant Hoover had seven carries for 33 yards. Looking ahead to next season, Eager pointed out the departure of senior signal caller Harbaugh. Cody Gehres and Jackson Landis could be competing for the starting position behind center. Gehres will be a senior while Landis will be playing his junior season. “ We’re excited to have Michael Shaffer and Deyvid Palepale back next year,” Eager said. “With those two, we would be able to run the ball behind them. “Grant Hoover will give us a boost at running back, and kick return plus Stephen Katch will be coming back. Both of those guys will be our new quarterback’s best friend in terms of running the ball.” The defensive secondary could also be returning plenty of experience with Gabe Benjamin, Braydon Felsinger, and Brian Williams - all of whom will be seniors. “They played the majority of the year,” said Eager. “We should be strong in that department.” “Aidan Shorter and Jacob Karkoska - our inside linebackers - are also coming back,” he added. As for the loss to end the strong 2021 campaign, Eager said, “When you have a tough loss and you have guys that

The Titans came back to win the tiebreaker fifth set of the match by a 15-13 score and advanced to the state semis, where they faced District Seven champ North Allegheny. It was actually a doubleheader at Altoona where No. Allegheny swept Elizabethtown (another District Three entry) by a 3-0 count.
Hempfield (18-1) battled back in this match after trailing 2-0. The Titans opened with a 25-17 victory and eked out a 25-23 win in the second set only to see the Black Knights post 25-20 and 25-19 victories to knot the match at two sets per side. Senior Camille De La Torre came through with 10 kills, 10 digs, and six aces for the Black Knights. Fellow seniors Allison Cummings (31 digs) and Joslene Morgan (14 kills, five blocks) also paced Hempfield while junior Sarah Hess equaled De La Torre’s total of 10 kills. Freshman Addie Leber led the squad in kills with 15 while sophomore Melody Butzer dished out a team-high 46 assists to go along with her 20 digs and three aces.

Church Plans Advent Gatherings The Veritas Community will host Advent worship gatherings each Sunday morning, starting on Nov. 28, at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St. This year’s Advent theme is “A 3-Dimensional Advent,” which centers on the idea that Jesus lived a three-dimensional life through relationships with His Heavenly Father, His disciples, and the world. During Advent, members of Veritas will explore and seek to
practice this 3D life in the midst of the holiday season. On Nov. 28, participants will focus on their relationship with the world through an Advent candle lighting and reading; praying for the church’s Advent offering partners, Eastern Mennonite Missions, and HUB 450; and collecting various materials for HUB 450’s after-school tutoring program. The items needed are individual dry erase boards, black dry erase
markers, pens, pencils, erasers, notebook paper, manila file folders, and permanent markers. On Dec. 5 and 19, participants will focus on their relationships with other believers. The gatherings will include a meal, an Advent candle lighting and reading, prayer, and Scripture exploration. Attendees are encouraged to bring food and drinks to share during the meal. See Advent pg 6

about two decades and that the group is excited to be partnering with DCA this year. The Mountville Lions will celebrate 75 years of service in 2022. DCA senior and NHS president Elisabeth Self said that members of the organization were excited to get involved with the drive. “This is a great way to serve the community,” she said. DCA junior and student government president Caroline Hostetter said that when she discussed the drive with the class officers, they responded positively. “We decided it was an amazing idea and a great cause,” she said. “Everyone seemed intrigued. This is a neat way for us to branch out and contribute to the community.”
To encourage all DCA students to take part, organizers have offered an incentive to classes to bring food items to the school on Monday, Dec. 6 and Dec. 7. “If your class brings an average of four items per person for food drive, (all the class members) are eligible for a dress-down day the following Friday,” said Hostetter. Hurley said that students plan to distribute flyers and contact churches in the Mountville area to encourage residents to take part in the food drive. The Mountville Lions Club food drive has been an annual tradition in the area for several years, but it was not held in 2020. Both the Lions and DCA hope that this year’s drive will be a resounding success.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., a truck will be located in the parking lot at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, across from DCA. A member of the Mountville Lions Club and representatives of NHS and the student government will be present at the truck to accept items for the Columbia Food Bank, a nonprofit entity working to eliminate food insecurity, located at 340 Locust Street, Columbia. “If (donors) need help to unload, we will have people there to help with that,” said Hurley. Foods that will be accepted include unexpired nonperishables, such as peanut butter, canned meat, canned vegetables, cereal, and spaghetti sauce. Lions Club member Jeff Weinman said that the idea was to bring together schools, churches, and other area organizations in a united effort. “We were hoping to see more community involvement in Mountville,” said Weinman, who noted that the Lions collect items for the food bank at their monthly meetings. He added the Lions have partnered with the Mountville VFW Reese Hall Post 8757 to collect food for the upcoming drive. “(The Columbia Food Bank) has been serving Mountville for 30 years,” said Weinman, who said he believes the Lions have held the food drive for
