SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL XXXVI • NO 35

we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive

You’re Invited To Thanksgiving Dinner and Reilly, the Workmans solicited food donations from friends and family members, prepared the he meal must go on. Not food, and happily served full meals wanting the Mountville area to whomever showed up. to lose its public Thanksgiving The Workmans have continued their service, and every year the number of attendees has grown. In 2019, they served 175 people via sit-down meals, takeout, and delivery. Greg and Dolly begin preparing the turkeys at 4 a.m. the day before Thanksgiving. A few volunteers help to peel potatoes and pick the meat from the turkey bones, but the Workmans do most of the cooking themselves. “I make 10 gallons of homemade gravy from scratch,” Dolly commented. The Workmans prepare a sumptuous repast, complete with 22 very large turkeys, 100 pounds of mashed potatoes, two bushels of sweet potatoes, peas, corn, fruit cocktail, and pies. Martin’s donates 30 dozen dinner rolls as well as 48 pounds of bread cubes, which Dolly makes into stuffing. The Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, of which Dolly is a member, contributes to the meal too. The Workmans refuse to accept any monetary donations from diners. “We want people to eat The Workman family, including (from left) Greg, Dolly, Reilly, and freely,” Dolly explained. (not pictured) Holly, cooked and served a community Thanksgiving “Everybody needs to have a dinner last year. meal for Thanksgiving.

BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Nobody is turned away.” After a year filled with the isolation of a pandemic shutdown, the anxiety of a tumultuous economy, and the stress of a presidential election, the Workmans are especially committed to hosting a Thanksgiving dinner. “A nice meal just makes everybody feel good,” Dolly remarked. With COVID-19 guidelines at the forefront, a socially distanced meal will be held at Central Manor Church, 387 Penn St. (Route 999), Washington Boro, on Thursday, Nov. 26. Takeouts and local delivery will be available at 11 a.m., and the sit-down meal will begin an hour later. Guests may drop in at any time and enjoy a meal while supplies last. “It starts at noon and goes until we feed the last person,” Dolly said. She noted that her family eats their Thanksgiving dinner at the church, too, but they tend to wait until the evening. “We have fun (serving),” Dolly added. “(By the end of the day), we’re so tired, but it’s such a rewarding thing.” For pandemic-related safety reasons, meals will be delivered to Hershey Mill Home, Faith Friendship Villa, and the GateHouse homes in Mountville and Marietta. In previous years, residents of those facilities had attended the Thanksgiving dinners in person. Dining reservations are not required but are appreciated. Those who would like to place orders for takeout or delivery may call the funeral home at 717-285-4513 or Dolly’s cellphone at 717-439-8128.

Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will offer hugs on Sunday, Nov. 29, at 4 p.m. Instead of a physical embrace, however, the church hopes to offer Healing, Understanding, Gratitude, and Strength (HUGS) through a livestreamed service to those carrying pain and loss into the Advent season. “The first Christmas without someone you love can be a difficult time,” said Linda Anspach, who coined HUGS. “Knowing there are others who care, going through similar feelings, (can be reassuring). We hope Wayside can be a source of affirmation that those feelings are normal - even expected - and help people feel less alone.” See Wayside Church pg 5

LancasterHistory’s Yuletide at W heatland will return this year in a digital format on Saturday, Nov. 28. Tours will be given over Zoom on Thursdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. through Saturday, Dec. 26. There will be no tours on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. Additional virtual tours will be available on Mondays to Wednesdays, Dec. 21 to 23 and 28 to 30, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The last day of Yuletide at Wheatland will be Dec. 30. Viewers can join a tour guide in real time over Zoom to traverse the festively decorated halls and rooms of the 1828 mansion while learning about the public and personal life of James Buchanan through the lens of Yuletide and traditions past. From Yuletide menus and means to how Christmastime was celebrated

during the Civil War, viewers will learn how Buchanan and his family experienced Yuletide in the mid-1800s. For example, in the Sitting Room in Wheatland, viewers will learn about Buchanan’s time in England as minister to Great Britain. It was during the reign of Queen Victoria, who was a personal friend of Buchanan and his niece, Harriet Lane, and a time when Christmas trees surged in popularity due to the influence of Victoria’s husband and consort, Prince Albert. Tours will last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, and viewers will be able to ask the guide questions live via Zoom’s Q&A function. There is a fee per connection, with one connection required to watch on one screen. Tickets may be purchased at www.lancasterhis tory.org/yuletide.

Wayside Church from pg 1 Wayside pastor Stephen Fritz noted that addressing feelings of grief right away instead of letting them build through the holiday season can make it easier to face loss. “The HUGS service is scheduled intentionally on the first Sunday in Advent, offering recognition and validation for people struggling with heartache while others are singing holiday hallelujahs, Fritz commented. “Our desire is that (viewers) will leave our service feeling hopeful and know they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings. Readers may visit www.waysidepc.org to find the invitation to join the livestreamed service. The recording of the service will be available on demand on Monday, Nov. 30, and through the Advent season. Individuals who want to get their toes tapping and their hands clapping are invited to log on to watch a livestreamed Celtic Christmas concert by Fire in the Glen at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6. The musical selections will include a variety of familiar Christmas carols, as well as some less well-known holiday music from Ireland, Scotland, and England. There will also be plenty of traditional Scottish and Irish music, since a Christmas party in Celtic

Holiday Meal Giveaway Slated The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-5675341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to

registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.

Knights Hold Off State College, Fall to N. Allegheny

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

It’s a well-known fact that advancing into the playoffs of a given team sport, you’re going to face tougher foes - opponents who’ll test your skills and resilience. The Hempfield girls’ volleyball team started the PIAA Class 4A playoffs with a quarterfinal round match at home against State College. The Black Knights displayed that resilience with a memorable 3-2 victory after trailing the Lions 2-0. In the abbreviated format of this year’s playoffs, only the district champions entered the state playoffs, immediately beginning the brackets in the quarterfinals. Hempfield entered the match on Saturday, November 14, with a 16-0 record, including the District Three championship match victory over the Wilson Bulldogs four days earlier. The unbeaten Black Knights had their hands full in the first two sets

against the visiting Lions, who did not trail in either of those sets, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. The District Six champion Lions led by as many as 10 points (16-6) and later by nine (20-11) in that opening set. They went on to post a 25-17 victory. In the second set, things were closer. The Knights evened the score on four occasions, including 22-22 before State inched ahead for a 2522 victory. “I think we were super tense, super nervous,” head coach Andrew Olree stated. “We had battles with them last year, so I think after we regained our composure, I made a middle change, and it made for better match-ups for us. We took advantage of that.” In the third set, the Knights not only took their first lead at 3-2, they had two seven-point leads and a 10point advantage at 21-11, managing to hold off State’s six-point run thereafter and posting a 25-19 win.

“We kept our heads up,” said Hempfield junior Allison Cummings, who led with a team-high 20 digs. “In the third set once we started serving harder and learning where they were hitting, we were able to lift ourselves up.” “We finally came alive at the service line,” Olree said. “We put a lot of pressure on them. They were not in their system like they were in the first two sets. They also seemed to be having trouble with our lefthanders.” One of the fans in the socially distanced gymnasium was wearing a Hempfield volleyball t-shirt that read on the back, “Winning is our mission. Dominance our tradition” And dominate they did. The Knights jumped out to an 8-0 lead and built a 20-3 advantage on their way to a 25-7 blowout. “It felt amazing,” Cummings continued. “We got in their heads. We picked up the energy in the last set.”

Twice in the final set the Lions got to within three points of Hempfield. Leading 11-8, the Knights regained momentum, scoring four of the next five points for a 15-9 win. “I’ve been on the losing end of being up 2-0 and losing in five,” Olree said. “I’ve never actually been part of the winning side. This was one of the best wins I’ve been a part of.” Camille De La Torre led the way in kills with eight. Joslene Morgan finished with six and Emma Bitner, who served up a team-high five aces and recorded seven digs, was tops in assists with 22. Emily James finished with three digs. Morgan Minnich had a solid match with eight digs, four aces and four kills, and Ashley Weaver finished with seven digs and registered three kills. The victory gave Hempfield a spot in the state semifinals again.

In last year’s semifinals, the Knights faced North Allegheny, the WPIAL and District Seven champions, returning to the state playoffs hoping to clinch their fourth straight trophy. In the 2019 semifinal match between these teams - a match played at Altoona - the Tigers won 3-1 en route to their third consecutive state title. This year’s semifinals, held on Tuesday at Altoona, the Knights again showed resilience, holding back the Tigers until that fifth and final set. North Allegheny (17-0) won the fifth set 15-9 after Hempfield had stormed back to win the fourth one 26-24. It was a back-and-forth match

with Hempfield also winning the second set 25-19 while the Tigers won the first set 25-18, and the third set 25-13. North Allegheny moved into the state finals against District One champ Unionville. Mia Tuman and Jadyn Perkins led the Tigers in kills with 16 and 14, respectively. Tuman also finished with 12 digs while Perkins registered six blocks. De La Torre again led the Knights in kills with 13. She also notched three blocks. James had a solid night (12 kills, 3 blocks) as did Morgan (11 kills, 4 blocks) while Cummings came away with 19 digs. Bitner distributed 44 assists.

Christmas spirit will be in the air during Holidays at Mount Hope. Holiday activities at the Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, will include the annual Holiday Dinner Theater and the Holiday Open House. This is the 37th year for the dinner theater, said Candace Smith, director of sales and communications for Mount Hope Estate and Winery and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. The event evolved from a Charles Dickens Christmas into the interactive show it is today, held

in the 19th-century mansion on site. Although this year’s event will look a little different than years past, it will still feature all of the holiday cheer guests expect. “Guests will check in at the front door of the mansion and be directed to their individual-party, socially distanced tables, where they will enjoy a three-course meal as the characters move from room to room to entertain with Christmas carols and seasonal storytelling,” Smith explained. For the Holiday Open House, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the

grounds and mansion free of charge. “The Holiday Open House is a great event to simply enjoy shopping with unique merchants, visit with Father Christmas, have lunch at the Anchor & Mermaid Tavern (and) see the opulently decorated mansion,” she stated. “Guests can take their time and do some or all of these things at their own pace.” Smith said both events are important for Mount Hope. Although some changes will be in place this year, including limiting the number of guests allowed inside the buildings, the spirit of the events will remain intact. “Both the dinner theater and open house have become traditions for many of our visitors, and we look forward to providing these seasonal opportunities in a safe and merry way,” she noted. “We offer unique alternatives to modern-day holiday celebrations. From the decorated Victorian mansion to the gourmet dinner of the dinner theater, from the chance to take a safe holiday photo with Father Christmas to a place to find one-of-a-kind gifts, they are both celebrations that will be cherished.” Mount Hope’s Holiday Dinner Theater performances will run on Fridays, Saturdays
