Carving Out Time For The Holidays By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The plaintive strains of “Silent Night” played on a harmonica filled the air as members of the Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association (MTWA) and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) placed ornaments on a small artificial evergreen tree on Dec. 4. Each of the more than 170 ornaments had been painstakingly carved and decorated by members of the two groups. “Some of them are so beautifully ornate. They really bring the spirit of Christmas,” commented Lauren Musser, corporate and community relationship manager for Hospice & Community Care (HCC). The ornaments are shaped like mittens, Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas, evergreen trees, angels, birds, and snowmen, and there is even a Noah’s ark with a pair of delicately

carved giraffes. The tree is located in the chaplains’ office of the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, near Mount Joy. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are managed during generally short-term stays before returning home. During December, HCC chaplains and social workers invite clients’ family members to choose ornaments from the tree as holiday keepsakes. “People are here, but the holidays are still happening around them,” Musser said. “This creates a sweet moment for them to get through this holiday season.” “(The ornaments are) a tangible expression of care that can be carried on by families,” chaplain Kevin Frain remarked. “The memories associated See Woodcarving Groups pg 4

Lititz, Mountville, and Lancaster city, purchased the historic Marietta property in March 2018. Executive director Jodi Holland said the purchase was made possible by a $250,000 grant the organization received from the Capitol Area Behavioral Health Collaboration in March 2017. The stone mansion was built in 1876 under the direction of ironmaster Henry Miller Watts, who had the home constructed as a wedding gift for his son, Ethelbert. In addition to his success in

Marietta’s iron industry, Henry’s accomplishments included serving as an ambassador to Austria. Holland explained that the mansion’s three-story tower was modeled after a castle Henry admired in Austria. Most recently, the estate belonged to the late Donald and Joyce Hershey, who purchased the property in 1981 and extensively remodeled the 9,000-squarefoot house while preserving many of its original features, such as carved wooden

doorknobs, gas chandeliers, and oak and walnut patterned floors. The Hersheys, who were among the original founders of LCBC (Lives Changed by Christ) Church, had converted the property’s garage into the first venue for LCBC. At the grand opening of The GateHouse at Riverview Tower, speakers included The GateHouse board president Mark F. Walmer, drug court judge David L. Ashworth, and Kristi Martarano, the future clinical director of The GateHouse at Riverview Tower. Martarano is a former client of The GateHouse, a graduate of Leadership Lancaster, and the current

clinical director of The GateHouse for women in Mountville. The Mountville facility will be converted to serve men, while the Marietta location will be for women. Holland explained that the 90-day recovery program begins with a two-week orientation and that a professional and credentialed treatment team works with each resident on counseling, recovery, life skills, and connecting with local 12-step groups. “We want to encourage and transform the lives of individuals who are struggling with addiction, and we do that by walking beside them in a safe, community-driven space,” summarized Holland. “Our goal is to reintegrate (residents) into the community.” Holland said that establishing a new facility truly meets a need in the area, as the organization had been serving approximately 5% of its referrals. “Fortyseven years is a long time for this type of service. The drugs may change, but addiction is not new,” she continued. “We’ve consistently been able to serve people.” To learn more about the organization and its services, readers may visit https://gatehouse.org.

With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or

Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. with an ornament may be painful, but (they are) meaningful.” This is the 11th consecutive year that the MTWA has given a decorated tree to HCC’s inpatient care facility and the third that LCWC has participated. The tradition was started by the late Bob Stampf, who was a founder of the MTWA, when the group members sought to share woodcarving with the community in an impactful way. HCC was suggested, as an MTWA member had a relative receiving care. MTWA member Ruth Stetter related that the ornaments went over so well that first year that when she went to pick up the empty tree, Musser joked that Stetter may have it only if she brought it back with more ornaments the following December. “It’s a good thing (to do),” Stetter said. “It makes you feel good to do this for folks.” MTWA member Mark Arbogast coordinates the ornament project and is also a member of the LCWC. When the MTWA, which has only about 10 members, could no longer create the necessary number of ornaments, Arbogast invited the 80member LCWC to join the effort. “The Lancaster County WoodCarvers was very

Many of the artists have devoted fans and followers from well beyond the central Pennsylvania area, and the show draws visitors from numerous states. “Last year, people were lined up two and a half hours before we opened,” Shaw recalled. In addition to perusing the original wares, people may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public on both days, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. The count is known as the largest annual citizen science effort, and all levels of birders can help, including backyard watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders must register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle. A count will be held on Sunday, Dec. 15, in southern Lancaster County, and the contact person is Bob Schutsky at 717-548-3303 or info@birdtreks.com.

radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season. Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases. Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses. Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints. Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A sixmonth or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that many ancient cultures celebrated various holidays that included exchanging gifts, adding that it’s very likely that, even in ancient times, gifts were wrapped to surprise their eventual recipients. Bojagi is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth that might have begun being used sometime during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period, which began in 57 B.C. and ended in A.D. 668. The Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which can be traced back to the 17th century and possibly as far back as A.D. 710, involves using a traditional wrapping cloth to transport certain items, including gifts.

gifts. While the wrapping paper many gift givers use today is a relatively recent phenomenon, the tradition of wrapping gifts is centuries old, with some historians even suggesting it dates back to ancient times.

As for the gift wrap familiar to today’s holiday celebrants, that traces its origins to the early 1900s. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that Eli Hyman and Morris

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience

hen shopping this holiday season, keep in mind that “shopping small” not only helps the local if not more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with community but that it can also mean a more pleasant experience for you too. While small customers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer more businesses may not have the marketing muscle to compete with large corporations, many unique products, including customized items. small businesses have perfected the art of providing top-notch experiences for their customers by embracing several strategies that make consumers feel appreciated.

Improved customer service

Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.

■ Responses

Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53 percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can read a company’s response and know that owners want their customers to have as positive an experience as possible.

■ Personalization

Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day,

David Phelps To Perform Christmas Concert

Chiques UMC Celebrates 60th Anniversary Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC), 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy, celebrated its 60-year anniversary on Nov. 3 with an anniversary banquet at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy. The anniversary celebration began with a worship service at 9:45 a.m. with a morning message by the Rev. Dr. Reid S. Thomas Jr. At the noontime banquet, Michael Byrd, the current pastor at Chiques, provided the welcome and invocation. The dinner was then served family style, with the menu including fruit cup, baked ham, stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, baked corn, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, dinner rolls, pie and ice cream, and coffee, hot tea, iced tea, lemonade, and milk. The Chiques theme song, “To God Be the Glory,” was then performed. A time of recognition followed, with Jay Mueller Jr. leading the recognition of former pastors, wives of former pastors, Chiques sons of ministry, charter members, 50-year members, and the new confirmation class.

Lancaster Marionette Theatre will present “Cinderella’s Christmas” on select dates in December.

A music medley was presented by pastor Beverly Andrews and Randy Watts. Mueller presented a slide show, and Byrd offered closing remarks. Chiques UMC was formed by the merger of the Mount Joy and Salunga Methodist Churches. Under the leadership of the Rev. George K. Ludwig, the two congregations first voted for merger on Feb. 24, 1957. Details were worked out under the direction of the Rev. Menno E. Good, who was appointed to the circuit in May. On Dec. 20, 1957, the Lancaster County Court granted a new charter for the merged congregation. Eight acres of land along Route 230 were purchased on March 11, 1958, midway between the two original congregations. The name Chiques was selected because the new property was situated midway between the Big and Little Chiques creeks. On Easter Sunday, March 29, 1959, ground was broken for the new church. The cornerstone was laid on June 7, and the new building was dedicated on Nov. 10 of that year.

Recording artist David Phelps, winner of multiple Dove and Grammy awards, will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, as part of his “It Must Be Christmas” tour. Once a childhood musical prodigy from Tomball, Texas, Phelps earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Baylor University. Since then, he has become a nationally celebrated vocalist and is best known as the tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band. For more than two decades he has specialized in contemporary Christian music and performed around the world, including at the White House, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. The “It Music Be Christmas” event, presented by Garden Spot Promotions and IMC Concerts, is one of a dozen concerts Phelps and his musical entourage will perform throughout the holiday season. Many of the songs featured during the evening are part of

David Phelps Phelps’ “It Must Be Christmas” recording, which was released last fall. The evening will also include renditions of classics like “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” and “Sleigh Bells,” along with Phelps’ new classics like “Fall On Your Knees,” “Christmas Rush,” and “Anthem of the Lord.” Information about the tour may be obtained by visiting www.itickets.com or www.davidphelps.com.
