Cookies With Santa To Benefit Mini-THON
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

High School MiniTHON will host Cookies With Santa on Sunday, Dec. 18, at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. The holiday fundraising event will have a set price per child and feature festive activities for children and their parents. There will be no fee for parents and legal guardians attending with their children.
During the event, children will have an opportunity to take a picture with Santa, enjoy hot cocoa, decorate their own sugar cookies and assemble a holiday craft. This is the first year that the Mini-THON program will host a holiday fundraiser, and Mini-THON adviser Kelly Parker hopes to make Cookies With Santa a yearly event.
Hempfield student volunteers who are involved with Mini-THON will assist with the event’s activities with the hope of helping to garner funds toward Mini-THON’s fundraising goal of $58,000. “We function as a club outside of the school day. We have students on the leadership team and open our general committee up to anyone who wants to be involved,” said Parker.
Hempfield Mini-THON and its members work year-round to raise money for PennState Health’s Four Diamonds fund through a variety of fundraisers, culminating in its biggest event at Hempfield High School in April. During the event, participating students’ goal is to stay active through different activities for up to five hours. Students in the past have held dodgeball tournaments, participated in activities with inflatables, played extreme musical chairs and danced in between. If this year’s goal is met, Hempfield Mini-THON will have raised a total of $1 million since the program’s inception.
Parker, who is also a teacher at East Petersburg Elementary, helped start Mini-THON at Hempfield in 2009 while she attended the school
as a senior. “Mini-THON is not only a great cause to work with, but it gives our students an opportunity to give back to the community,” Parker said. “This year we’re looking at doing some different activities to encourage people to get involved and raise money.”
Four Diamonds was created to
assist families that have children being treated for cancer at Penn State Health Children’s hospital, as well as to help fund research for a cure and treatment of childhood cancer. The money raised covers families’ medical bills so that parents can focus on supporting their children instead of managing finan-
cial burdens.
Hempfield MiniT-HON is offering sponsorships to local businesses to assist with its goal; sponsoring organizations will be featured on the yearly Mini-THON T-shirt and receive a shoutout on social media.
To become a sponsor, contact Parker at kelly_parker@hempfieldsd.org.

For Erin Mary Lynch of Landisville, the holiday season is more about giving than receiving. Lynch not only purchases Christmas presents for her friends and family; but she also aims to give back to her community through music and providing a message of hope.
“Faith and performance have gotten me through so many things,” said Lynch. “The ability to pull people out of whatever day they’re having and into a joyful and happy mood is so special.”
Lynch was first introduced to the world of theater around the age of 7; when she performed in a Christmas show at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Since then, she has starred in numerous productions across the county, returning to the Dutch Apple and first performing at Sight & Sound Theatres in its production of “Jonah” in 2012. “I was super lucky to grow up in Lancaster, where there are so many opportunities to perform,” said Lynch, who is currently a member of the cast of “David” at Sight & Sound.

This was the first year that Lynch was the writer, director and choreographer of the annual “Wish” musical at Dutch Apple on Dec. 4 and 5. The musical, hosted by nonprofit organization Mychal’s Message, raises funds in order to provide Christmas gifts and meals to families in Lancaster County. This year’s show followed the story of a young girl whose family is participating in Wish to give to those in need. The show highlighted the importance of giving versus receiving through the eyes of its protagonist. “I was able to see all of the kids and families that were involved with the program because of the mission and not just the show,” said Lynch. “It shifted my perspective.”
The auditions for “Wish” drew young performers from all over the county, and those selected began rehearsing in the beginning of October. After the end of the show, the money raised was used to pay for the gifts and meals that were acquired by Lynch’s older sister, Shannon Hickey
who is a member of Mychal’s Message. The week before Christmas, the show’s cast members and their families will deliver the gifts and meals to recipients at McCaskey High School.
Lynch wrote the script and worked on “Wish” in between rehearsals and performances for “David,” often spending her evening dinner breaks writing the script, reviewing auditions and choreographing routines. This is the second year Lynch has written the script, and she plans to return as a writer for next year’s show.

tice member that demonstrates the core values of excellence, integrity, social responsibility, altruism and professional duty, and has created a unique and sustainable program that positively impacts the community.

B. Emerson, a West Reading artist with a focus on detailed graphite pencil and paper illustrations depicting a variety of themes, will continue the exhibition of her newest collection, “Dark Games & Other Little Things,” at Mulberry Art Studios into December. Guests can contact the gallery curator at stephanie.mulberryart@gmai l.com to arrange a visit.
Since a young age, making art has always been a way of life for Emerson. After college, working in other industries and starting a family, she rediscovered her love for drawing after the death of her spouse. Graphite pencil and paper is Emerson’s pre-
ferred medium. In earlier works, the inspiration of wood grain was partially used in paintings but not in its entirety as it is today. It has now become a signature style in identifying Emerson’s work.
Each piece has depth of movement through perspective, rich tonality and contrast with the use of black and white and the incorporation of wood grain. Emerson’s inspiration comes from a deeply rooted fascination with nature, people and life events.
This year’s exhibit will showcase a variety of Emerson’s work through the last two years, including 10 new
pieces. A mix of all series and themes is featured, and works are on a small to large scale.
Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. For more information, visit www.mulberryart studios.com or search for ‘Mulberry Art Studios” on Facebook.

Medical Students Win Scholarships
Five area students were selected as recipients of the 2022 Lancaster Medical Society Foundation scholarship awards. The competitive process, which makes selections based on character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need, included submissions from applicants throughout Lancaster County. As part of the application, students were required to write an essay explaining why they have chosen to pursue a career in medicine. The selection committee chose the awardees through a blind review process.
This year’s recipients are Launick Saint-Fort of Ephrata, Nicole Hanselman of Manheim, Hannah Kuntz from Elizabethtown, Rhea Sullivan from Landisville and Kevin Chao of Lancaster.
Saint-Fort, a trauma research coordinator, graduate of Penn State Berks and firstyear medical student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. For Saint-Fort, whose younger years were spent as a child slave in Haiti, medical school and a potential career as a physician were beyond her wildest dreams. She noted that in childhood, she contracted various illnesses that could have been prevented with quality medical care, which was not available to her.
Hanselman, an Elmira College graduate and research specialist currently in her first year at Saint James School of Medicine in Illinois, received a $3,500 award. She explained that her passion to pursue medicine was conceived in a small orphanage in Vietnam, where she lived after losing her parents and oldest sister. Placed in the orphanage at age 7, Hanselman was assigned to care for the sickest babies, but could only do so much to ease their pain and suffering.
Kuntz, a former medical assistant with AmeriCorps and a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, is a first-year student at the Pennsylvania State College of

Medicine. Her passion for medicine was fostered through her volunteer experiences working with underserved populations in Lancaster city and later in Rochester, N.Y.
Sullivan, a fourth-year M.D. and Ph.D. student at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College, shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine came after experiences she had in college, including witnessing the deaths of both a fellow college student and then a neighbor as a result of addiction.
Chao, a former medical scribe and volunteer smoking cessation counselor, is a Saint Joseph’s University (formerly University of the Sciences) graduate and second-year student at Drexel University College of Medicine. Chao’s choice to pursue medicine grew from childhood experiences with the health care system. Born with a heart abnormality that was incredibly difficult to manage, he credits his parents, pediatrician and cardiologist for their tireless care, giving him a life that he would not otherwise have had.
Chao, Kuntz and Sullivan were all awarded $2,000 scholarships.
Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
The scholarship foundation is supported by the Lancaster County medical community, through hospitals and health systems, group practices, individual medical society members, local businesses and Lancaster-area residents. Since its inception, more than $282,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.

The tour was followed by an evening reception featuring an “Upcycled Art” exhibit curated by Red Raven Art Company.
Keynote speaker Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster, spoke about how clean and beautiful communities support strategic priorities for the city: strong neighborhoods, safe
places, sustainable economy, and sound government.
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) recognized the PA DEP and PennDOT for their support and collaboration with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s programming, including Pick Up Pennsylvania and the new Young Ambassadors Program. KAB also recognized Gov. Wolf’s office with a State Innovative Partnership

If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.
“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”
The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The ladies auxiliary will serve breakfast items before the ride.
The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, fea-
turing items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”
Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.
Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”
Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”
The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”
For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717468-6197 or Hecht at 717283-6379.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award.
This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the prac-

A Master Watershed Steward information session for Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties will take place on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. The MWS program seeks to educate and empower volunteers to do watershed projects and education in their communities.
Master Watershed Stewards teach adults and children about water quality, wildlife habitats, and the environment; develop educational materials; organize and conduct educational events, stream cleanups, and invasive plant removal projects; design and maintain demonstration gardens; conduct stream monitoring projects and research; research and write newsletters and online articles; and partner with municipal officials on projects, such as bioswales, rain gardens, native meadows, and other green stormwater management solutions.
The event is offered at no charge to participants. Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinar. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. tice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical context.
The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory; the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design; Lancaster Conservancy in Lancaster; Historic Fairmount affordable housing; Keystone Kidspace; St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in York; Newville Town Center mixed-use housing/com-
mercial in Newville; Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg; and numerous residences, including new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse across the area.
In its 35-year history, T/Wa has been recognized with more than 50 awards, including design awards from the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter and from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, multiple annual awards from Preservation Pennsylvania for historic and adaptive reuse projects and many awards from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Historic Trust of Cumberland County and Historic York, among others.
The firm of 10 includes six registered architects. It has pursued projects to address issues of inequity, including affordable housing, public access to health care and minority-based community
enterprises. In the last five years, $300,000 of in-kind services have been donated to nonprofits.
The team members participate in volunteer activities and events, assist local nonprofits and serve on boards and committees. In addition, T/Wa members are active in the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter, including two team members who have served as president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter Board of Directors.
