Extension Offers Produce Safety Education Programs With funding from USDA NIFA award number 201770020-27236, Penn State Extension educators from the Food Safety and Horticulture teams developed bilingual produce safety educational materials and delivered trainings to Latino fresh produce growers and farmworkers in Pennsylvania. Maria Gorgo-Gourovitch was the principal investigator of the grant. Other members of the team were Megan Chawner, Tara Baugher, Jeffrey Stoltzfus, Don Seifrit, Christi Graver, professor of food science Dr. Luke LaBorde, and now retired extension
educator Lee Stivers. Congress entrusted the FDA to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This new law changed the food safety system from one that responds to contamination to one that aims to prevent it in the first place. Among the suite of new regulations issued under the law is “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” (USFDA, 2013), commonly known as the Produce Safety Rule. The Produce Safety Rule poses new regulatory challenges to the fresh produce industry in
Pennsylvania and across the country. Latino growers and farmworkers had an unmet need for accessible Food Safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) information, education, and resources. In order to provide short, easy-to-understand information, the Extension focused its educational materials and trainings on topics such as personal hygiene, microorganisms, and sources of contamination during, before, and after harvest. The Extension team began by collecting, assessing, and archiving pre-existing educational materials related to FSMA and Farm Food Safety education available at the Penn State website. Team members identified gaps in programming in regard to content and methodology. As a result, 10 articles and two fact sheets were translated. The team
reviewed and updated the Food Safety Training Kit and the GAP posters to match new public service announcement curricula and created a catalog of available information in English and Spanish. With support from stakeholders, the Extension determined where the greatest needs in programming were and then developed new educational materials and workshops specific to various industry groups. The team created a number of innovative, new food safety (GAPs) outreach, education, and training programs in English and Spanish, including 11 trainings and professional development with a total of 24 presentations. To find all the newly available resources, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/bi lingual-produce-safety-education.

Mom’s House recently received a $2,500 donation from the Lancaster City Benevolent and Protective Order (BPO) of Elks Lodge 134. These funds will directly impact Mom’s House’s child care and early education programs. Each child has his or her own individualized curriculum at Mom’s House to monitor and track critical milestones. The programs touch on all developmental areas, with the goal of preparing children to be savants of learning. The BPO Elks of the United States of America has a total of nearly 1 million men and women in almost 2,200 communities. The BPO Elks group is committed to the ideals of charity and patriotism. To that end, over the course of the organization’s 132 years, it has disbursed more than $2.69 billion in cash, goods, and services to the nation’s youths, veterans, and disadvantaged and handicapped people and to patriotic and civic programs. Mom’s House is a nondenominational center that works to empower single mothers to complete their education and find meaningful and gainful employment. The organization grew out of a movement to provide direction and support

Simala Receives Recognition In a ceremony held on Nov. 1, Flo Simala, director of nursing at Homestead Village, received a Patriot Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. Simala was nominated for the award by Apostles Center staff member Miranda Burley, who was recently deployed overseas for active service. In her nomination, Burley wrote, “Over the span of three years, I’ve been called away on short notice to be deployed overseas twice. Homestead Village, and my supervisor, Flo Simala, has provided me with all the tools I need to be prepared as well as accommodating my unique last-minute scheduling needs (and) proper leave of
absence, temporarily holding my part-time position while I’m away on military orders, and being a strong asset to my Air Force career altogether. My success would not possible without the sacrifices of my employer, and I greatly appreciate their cooperation with my call to serve.” Simala’s father, husband, brothers, uncles, and nephew all served in the military. Patriot Awards are awarded to individual supervisors, reflecting the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a range
of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. An employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve or the spouse of a Guard or Reserve member may nominate individual supervisors and bosses for support provided directly to the nominating service member and his or her family. Faulkner Chevrolet helped spearhead a campaign, alongside Faulkner BMW, in conjunction with The Salvation Army to bring Christmas cheer to 75 children throughout Lancaster County. It was the first collaboration between the two Faulkner dealerships and the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree Program is an annual event. Children ages of 2 to 18 can request gifts, and the Lancaster community supports the efforts to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the winter months. Requested toys include crafts, board games, dolls, stuffed animals, and more. The goal is for donors to give what they are able and bring joy to children during the holiday season. Faulkner Chevrolet general manager Chad Berger organized the dealerships’ participation in the project.

City Partnership Completes Project A partnership between Lancaster City Alliance and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP) has employed city residents in need of work and resulted in the completion of its first project at 602 Saint Joseph St. The project, known as Front STEPS, combines the expertise of both CAP and Lancaster City Alliance to engage the neighborhood and train workers to repair facades on various city streets. The property, formerly a condemned laundromat, received significant work to its
Victorian-era storefront, including installation of period-appropriate storefront windows, doors, and railings as well as repairs to the crumbling foundation. With these enhancements, the property can now offer neighborhoodserving business opportunities on the ground floor as well as safe and affordable housing on the upper floors. There are nearly 50 façade improvement projects currently in the works, with the goal to complete 65 façade projects by the end of 2020.

New Year’s Day Ride To Support Local Veterans American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m. at Post 185. Breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. Vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts, sweatshirts, and patches for vests. “Before the ride, we say the Pledge of Allegiance, and with that many people there Main Street just becomes completely quiet,” Stumpf shared. Approximately 475 bikes rode in last year’s event. One tradition the ride has maintained through the years is the naming of one rider as “Baby New Year,” who must ride the first

Beautiful weather with temperatures in the 50s graced last year’s New Year’s Day charity motorcycle ride along the Susquehanna River, and organizers are crossing their fingers for more of the same this time around. “Last year we raised over $35,000, and it was our biggest year for the amount of money raised. That brings our total for the 10 years we’ve had this ride to over $160,000 that we’ve raised for veterans,” stated organizer Tyler Stumpf. Billy Hecht, who started the event with Stumpf and some other friends, emphasized that 100% of proceeds from the event go toward helping veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, with no overhead or administrative costs. The 11th annual New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole

Inviting the community to join in the 11th annual New Year’s Day charity motorcycle ride to support veterans at the Lebanon VA Medical Center are (from left) Jen Stumpf, Tyler Stumpf, Guy Caplinger, Nicole Tipping, Jeff Andrews, and Billy Hecht. Registration will open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2020, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy, with the ride taking off at 1 p.m. mile dressed in a baby costume. That rider has the honor of selecting next year’s Baby New Year. “This year we have our first female Baby New Year,” Stumpf noted. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters, the 2019 Baby New Year, relegated the role to Teresa Ardini of Manheim for 2020. Ardini is creating her own costume and will announce next year’s lucky - or not so lucky, depending on the weather - honoree after the ride. The approximately 25- to 30mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. A silent auction will feature plenty of motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and other items, including a T-shirt quilt created by TLC-Quilting. Another fun tradition is the
presentation of a plaque to the individual who travels the farthest to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists have come from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and beyond in past years. The winner of last year’s plaque rode from his home north of the Poconos. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. People are also welcome to pay for admission to the meal and after-ride festivities. Businesses interested in making a contribution toward the fundraiser for veterans may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.
