Guest Room Do Double Duty It is nice to have a guest room where relatives and friends can spend the night and feel comfortable, but if your family could use the space for other activities, there are many ways you can make the spare room more versatile. Think about your family’s current needs before redesigning the room. Do you need a better place for family game night? Could the children use a quiet area to do homework? Is someone in the family a seamstress or crafts enthusiast? Keep in mind that rooms can have multiple uses depending on how
clever you are with creating special nooks for different tasks. Consider replacing a double or queen bed with a daybed that has a pullout trundle. When guests are not visiting, the daybed doubles as seating and the trundle is tucked out of sight. Lots of attractive daybed covers are available, and teamed with colorful pillows, they can make your guest bed look more like a comfy sofa. If you already own a twin bed, remove the headboard and push the bed against the wall. Add throw pillows and a new coverlet, and you have a daybed. With a big, clunky bed out of the way, you will have room to set up an art studio, sewing area or hobby room. If you are using a spare room as a home office or home gym, a wall bed that can be folded out of sight during the day is a smart option. Other possibilities are a convertible sofa or loveseat that can be used as seating during the day and pulled out into a bed when needed. For very small rooms, a futon or a foldout chair that converts into a twin bed may be a better choice. Does the room get lots of sun? Consider turning it into a sunroom with lots of houseplants, a wicker table, a chaise lounge and a window seat that can double as a guest bed. A home entertainment room can also double as a guest room. Choose a sectional or large sofa with a pullout bed and add a plasma TV that hangs on the wall, or an entertainment armoire to hold the TV, DVD/Blu-ray player, video game consoles, and stereo equipment. The guest room can also double as a study or home library if you install bookshelves along a wall, a comfy chair and table and a daybed or sleeper sofa. A builtin desk or counters provide extra surfaces for paying bills or doing homework. Does your family love to play board games? Stash a folding card table in the closet or shop for a table with pullout leaves that can be folded into a smaller size when guests visit. Do your children play instruments and need a rehearsal room? Install soundproofing on the walls and add a music stand and

No room to spare?
Home offices in tight spaces A home office is a necessity for many adults these days. While some people have entire rooms available to house a home office, others have to make do with less space, and that can mean fitting an office into a tight space. The first step in establishing a small home office is figuring out the space you have and any limitations that may accompany it. For example, maybe you have an unused corner in the living room but do not want to have wires and equipment out in the open. An armoiretype desk that can be closed when not in use is a viable option in such a situation. Perhaps there is an unused closet in a bedroom. A wall-mounted desk surface, such as a piece of custom-cut countertop material, complete with a foldaway mouse and keyboard tray, can easily turn the space into a compact nook. Maybe there is an entryway with a small table that would be large enough for a laptop. A stool or ottoman that can be tucked under it can serve as a desk chair and extra seating for company.
From Page 5
Look for occasional furniture that can do double duty, such as benches with lift-up tops or antique trunks that can hold blankets and pillows while serving as a table. Depending on the size of the room, you might use bookcases or plants as room dividers. This works quite well if part of the room is being used as an office and the other half is used for lounging or sleeping. For smaller rooms, look for space-saving computer workstations and desks that fit into a corner. Stackable baskets and cubes take up little space and can be used for storing office work, crafts, toys, etc. One important consideration is how often you actually have guests using the guest room. If people sleep over frequently, your options for multi-use will be more limited than if you only have occasional guests. You might want to design the room like a contemporary studio, particularly if it is in a basement or on the second floor. Set up a cabinet or counter with a cube size refrigerator, bottled water, a coffeemaker, snacks and a few mugs, glasses and plates. Add a daybed, an end table with a pullout writing desk and a handsome floor lamp or wall sconce for reading. Place a small TV on top of a chest of drawers or attach it to the wall on a swivel shelf. A large basement can easily double as a guest room and a home gym or game room. Use a divider or bookshelves to separate the sleeping area from the rest of the room or use twin beds pushed against the wall as loungers during the day and beds at night. Copyright © Publishers-Edge

Few things are anticipated more in spring than the arrival of new leaves on the trees and budding flowers in the garden. A landscape awash with fresh colors can brighten the spirit and make anyone want to head outdoors. There are many different plants that begin to show their colors in the spring. A number of perennials, annuals and trees begin to flower or show new sprouts in springtime. Here are some plants that can be planted for springtime enjoyment. Be sure to consult directions that usually come with the plants to find out whether they need to be protected from frost. Annuals Looking for first signs of color? Look no further than these wonderful annuals. * Alyssum: Starting in April, this cascading bounty of tiny flowers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterflies. * Dianthus: These vivid flowers also attract butterflies and are often a cottage garden staple. * Gypsophila: Also known as baby’s breath, these delicate flowers can serve as filler in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available. * Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade. * Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup family, these flowers bloom in shades of white to violet. * Pansy: These flowers are some of the earliest spring bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips. * Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding flower. Perennials These plants will come back year after year and offer spring shows. * Cherry blossom: The flowers that sprout on cherry trees are some of the first signs of spring. Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cherry blossom festivals.

Blooms * Columbine: These beautiful blooms attract butterflies and can be a nice part of a garden bed. * Jacob’s ladder: Variegated foliage that is dappled with violet-colored flowers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden. * Primrose: These flowers come in a variety of shades, making them versatile in any garden. They also tend to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. * Sweet violet: These fragrant flowers are edible as well as attractive. These plants can self-plant, so unless a gardener wants them to spread, they should be kept contained.
Cherry blossoms are one of the earlier signs that spring has arrived.

Make Spring Yard Spring marks the first opportunity for homeowners to inspect their yard and assess any property damage that might have resulted from harsh winter weather.
Restoring a yard after a long winter is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. Harsh winds and snow can take their toll on even the most beautiful landscape. Spring is a homeowner’s first chance to survey the damage and begin restoring the yard to where it was before all those strong winds andsnowstorms.Togetstartedonyouryardthisspring, considerthe following tips.
vDon’t begin too early. The early bird might get the worm, but the early homeowner might get a damaged lawn. If temperatures for an upcoming free weekend are unseasonably warm, it is best to avoid doing spring yard cleanup until there have been several warm weekends to thaw the ground. Unless the ground has completely thawed, footsteps on the yard will damage the grass, compacting the soil and preventing the air and moisture that soil needs from doing its job and penetrating the soil. What is more, if the yard is raked before the ground has thawed, the rake might just be pulling the grass out by its roots.

Clean-Up a Priority
1. E
v Survey the property. A close survey of the property will give homeowners an idea of just how big or small their restoration project will be. A thorough survey will reveal any problem areas and may also reveal some unexpected guests. Rabbits and squirrels often nest in yards during the winter. Rabbits will nest in the ground, while squirrels typically build nests made of leaves in the trees. Unless it is entirely necessary, avoid removing any nests, and be sure to carefully inspect the yard before the season’s first mow.
vOut with the old. When the cleanup process is ready to begin,
it is time to remove remnants from last season. This includes removing any dead plants as well as last year’s mulch. If new mulch is simply thrown on top of old, plants could suffocate. Dead leaves also tend to gather during the winter, often up against fences or a home’s exterior walls. Rake up these dead leaves and add them to the season’s compost.
vGet rid of thatch. Thatch can be soil’s worst enemy, preventing its access to the sunlight, air and moisture it needs to make the lawn look beautiful and healthy. Thatch removal can be tiresome, but visit the local hardware store and pick up a dethatching rake to make the job a little easier. Thatch removal is not always necessary every spring. Many homeowners have found that removing thatch every other year is effective enough.
vAerate the yard to revive the soil. Soil often becomes compacted as spring becomes summer and summer becomes fall. This is especially true of yards that are heavily used, be it by kids playing outdoors or families who love to host warm weather gatherings in the yard. Aerating in the spring removes plugs of sod from the soil, loosening it up and making it easier for air and water to reach the roots.
AWNINGS
vAddress those ugly bald spots. Bare spots in a yard can result from any number of things, be it a dog urinating in the yard or even disease. Early spring, when temperatures are a little cooler and will promote grass growth, is a great time to address the yard’s bald spots. Do so by clearing away the spots and sprinkling the freshly exposed soil with some grass seed. Then add some fertilizer and be sure the newly seeded areas get some water until the new, healthy grass begins to grow in.

Vegetables to Grow at Home Rising costs at the supermarket and worries about unhealthy pesticides or preservatives on foods has led many people to start a vegetable garden at home. Growing vegetables is easier than one would think. Plus, you don’t need an expansive plot of land to grow a garden. 1. Tomatoes: While commonly considered vegetables, tomatoes are actually fruits. Still, tomatoes can be an integral part of a vegetable garden. Tomatoes are high in lycopene and other antioxidants. There are also myriad varieties to tempt your palate. Tomatoes can be planted after the soil has thawed and there is no other chance for frost. They’ll require plenty of sunlight, but fruit should be available to harvest toward the latter part of the summer. Zucchini are an Italian squash variety that appear similar to a cucumber. They can be green or yellow in coloring. This vegetable is full of potassium, folate and manganese, making it a great addition to your menu.
