The Brickerville House is on the list of Historic Buildings in Lancaster. Built by John and Barbara Bricker in 1753, it was located on the main road from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. The original portion of this house served as a stagecoach stop and tavern over the years. A Commitment To Comfort At Mount Joy’s Olde Square Inn

By Ann K. Charles Three years ago, Nancy Skee fulfilled her lifelong dream of owning a bed-and-breakfast. After 24 years as a teacher, Skee ventured into the lodging industry by purchasing Olde Square Inn in Mount Joy. “After 24 years of teaching, I’m finally here,” says Skee. “Every part of the inn is very special to me!” The inn’s three-story Georgian Revival-style building was built after World War I by Howard Longenecker, a prominent resident of Mount Joy who was successful in the tobacco and banking industries. “Evidence of his wealth can be found throughout the home in its curved radiators, leaded glass windows, and beautiful columns separating the living room and the current dining room,” Skee explains. Skee is the third innkeeper to operate the building as an inn. “This wonderful home was just meant to be shared with visitors,” she says. Skee shows her zeal for her new profession by paying close attention to all the details of operating the inn, which features seven guest rooms, including two suites. “With a five-star rating on TripAdvisor, guests know they can expect sparkling clean, beautiful rooms and a homey and

comfortable atmosphere,” Skee remarks. The inn’s homey touches include each room’s private bathroom, mini fridge with bottled water, television, DVD player, and fireplace. The rooms also boast super-soft Comphy brand sheets on queen-size beds and luxurious Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. There is an additional king-size bed in the Third Floor Suite. The comforts of home extend when guests step out of their rooms, as well. “One can always find coffee, tea, snacks, and homemade cookies in the common area and can search our DVD library for a great late-night movie,” Skee relates. Guests are greeted with a glass of wine when they check in. “Guests rave about feeling very welcome at the Olde Square Inn and always comment on the cleanliness of the rooms,” Skee continues. “Some of our top praises, though, are about our breakfasts.” Indeed, as the inn’s breakfasts always feature three courses of culinary delights, it’s unsurprising that guests are impressed with the morning meal. Each breakfast begins with a fruit course, such as a grilled pear with organic yogurt, granola, and raspberry drizzle. Ingredients: 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese 3 eggs 1 cup sour cream-based onion dip 1 10-ounce box of frozen, chopped spinach thawed with the water squeezed out Unbaked pie crust, chilled - your own or ready-made Optional: tomato slices, Italian seasoning Procedure: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. In a large bowl, combine first four ingredients until well blended. 3. Pour into pie crust right before baking. 4. Several side dishes such as bacon or sausage, scones and muffins, avocado toast, potatoes, and a sautéed fresh vegetable are also on the menu. Guests should be sure to save room for one additional treat, however. “Breakfast is not complete until the dessert course is served!” Skee proclaims. Some of the sweet treats that may be available to round out the morning’s meal include brownies and apple strudel. Skee also notes that the inn is happy to accommodate guests with special dietary needs, including those who require vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals, if provided with advance notice. With full stomachs, guests can embark on their day, whether they are exploring Lancaster County or merely relaxing at the inn. Amish Country attractions, antiquing opportunities, theater shows, shopping, and amusement parks are within comfortable driving distance, and there are restaurants and shops within walking distance, too. Skee particularly recommends a visit to the nearby Bube’s Brewery, a historic 19th-century brewery and museum complex. Back at the Olde Square Inn, guests can relax after a day of fun, cozying up by the fireplace on a winter evening or enjoying the inn’s outdoor spaces when the weather is warm. “One of my favorite spots is our side porch in summertime,” Skee shares. “The floor-to-ceiling curtains that blow in the summer breeze along with tables dressed with linens and chairs with cushions make it the perfect place for breakfast, reading a book, or just relaxing.” Another welcoming outdoor space is the inn’s secondfloor Grand Balcony. “Tiny white lights around the railing give

Booking A Stay At A B&B?

No Need To Leave The Kids (And Pets) At Home There’s no question that an inn or bed-andbreakfast can be ideal for a quiet romantic getaway. But what about when you want to get away but bring the whole family? Are families with young children relegated to stay as anonymous guests at large, cookie-cutter hotel chains? Absolutely not! Some small establishments are happy to welcome not only young guests, but ones of the furry variety as well. To make guests’ stays easier, familyfriendly inns and bed-and-breakfasts may offer suites of rooms or separate cottages on the grounds. Sometimes these types of accommodations offer a full private kitchen and all the comforts of home, including cribs and toys for the kiddos and food bowls and pet beds for Fido. Some innkeepers may provide kids’ dining menus and children’s activities in addition to offering suggestions of local ageappropriate attractions. As sublime as this sounds, we would be remiss not to mention that a little common courtesy is required to make it all run as smoothly as possible. Guests traveling with little ones should keep

the following things in mind: • Other guests may be looking for a quiet getaway, so noise curfews should be strictly observed. An inconsolable infant in the middle of the night could spoil the trip for more than just Mom and Dad. Separate family cottages may be the ideal accommodation for children who don’t sleep through the night, so families will be sure not to disrupt other guests. • Children should not be left unattended in the room or common areas and should be generally

well-behaved when spending time in common areas. Room service might be a parent’s best friend in this instance. • Part of the charm of an inn or bedand-breakfast is often the décor, which may include antiques. Parents should be diligent in supervising children so that nothing gets damaged or broken. Those traveling with their fur babies should also be aware of some guidelines: • Pets should be clean, free of fleas and ticks, and up to date with vaccinations for the safety of other pets and guests. Guests who plan to take nature walks may need to bring some extra towels from home to clean muddy paws. • Pets should be housebroken, wellbehaved, non-aggressive, and generally quiet (no barking that could disturb other guests). • Owners may not be able to leave pets unattended in the room, so extracurricular activities should be planned accordingly. The bed-and-breakfast or inn may allow pets to stay in the room for a limited time if they are crated. • Pets may not be allowed on furniture, and guests will be held responsible for any chewing or other damage. There may be additional daily fees for pets. • Guests must clean up after their pets outside and keep them leashed or under control outside of the room. It is important to note that these are general guidelines and that each inn or bed-and-breakfast that allows children and pets has its own policies in place. Be sure to check the business’s website or speak with the innkeeper before booking. The opportunity to experience the hospitality, ambiance, and personal touches provided by inns and bedand-breakfasts doesn’t have to be relinquished when traveling as a family. HIKING BOOTS Pennsylvania has an abundance of hiking trails providing travelers with an array of opportunities to combine sightseeing and outdoor exercise. Whether embarking on a short, brisk hike to a scenic overlook or stepping off on a challenging journey along a historic trailway, active visitors have plenty of options to satisfy any perambulatory preference. Trekkers can check out a few southeastern Pennsylvania favorites, including:

PARK AT GOVERNOR DICK, LEBANON COUNTY Hikers looking for a quick but vigorous hike can check out the trail at Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick. The 3-mile round-trip hike will take visitors uphill to the Governor Dick observation tower. Hikers with no aversion to heights can climb the ladder system to the top of the tower and enjoy a 360-degree view of the picturesque Lebanon scenery. Parking is available at 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna.

FLAT ROCK TRAIL, CUMBERLAND COUNTY Hikers who trek the 2.5 miles from Colonel Denning State Park to the top of the Blue Mountain in

Ned Smith Center

Tuscarora State Forest will be rewarded with a breathtaking 180-degree view of the Cumberland Valley. The overlook is a natural rock outcrop reached via the moderate-to-rugged trail that climbs over 900 feet in elevation. Hikers should prepare for rocks and loose gravel, wear good hiking boots, and bring a bite to eat and plenty of water. The trailhead is located at the footbridge next to the park’s environmental classroom, 1599 Doubling Gap Road, Newville.

NORTHWEST RIVER TRAIL, LANCASTER COUNTY This approximately 14-mile trail along the Susquehanna River provides hiking and trail biking opportunities. Following the historic canal path through several Lancaster County municipalities, the trail showcases archaeological sites such as iron furnace ruins, abandoned canal locks, and an old quarry operation. Travelers can pick up the trail at several points, including the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, which also provides a boat launch and other amenities.

SWATARA STATE PARK, SCHUYLKILL & LEBANON COUNTIES The showstopper on the Swatara State Park trails is Aycrigg’s Falls and the Bordner Cabin. The cabin was built in 1939, and right next to it is the 60-foot-high Aycrigg’s Falls, a series of falls that is at its best flow-wise toward the end of winter and beginning of spring. Hikers who come across the falls in summer or fall may find its flow greatly reduced. Visitors can choose from several trails of varying difficulty to reach the falls and cabin, including a 2.5-mile trek along Bear Hole Trail, which may be accessed near the Waterville Bridge parking area off Interstate 81.

NED SMITH CENTER LANDS AND TRAILS, DAUPHIN COUNTY A variety of trails can be found within the 500 acres of land that stretches from the Wiconisco Creek to Berry’s Mountain in the Ned Smith Center, 176 Water Company Road, Millersburg. Hikers will find several difficulty levels, as well as ADA-compliant options and horseback riding trails. Be on the lookout for deer, bears, wild turkeys, grouse, foxes, and numerous songbirds, insects, and reptiles that inhabit the forest.
