cafeteria with an opening presentation from Ben Styles, a school counselor from the Lancaster County Career and Technolog y Center. Styles spoke to the eighth-graders about skills that are necessary to work in any field, such as cooperating with others, showing up to work on time and other general topics. After the presentation, groups of students took turns hearing from guest speakers set up in different classrooms. T he speakers included a physical therapist, an accountant, a veterinarian, an aerospace eng ineer and many other working professionals. “Being able to speak to someone in person gives students an opportunity to ask any question that comes to mind. It’s the most important piece,” said Ker ri Eberly, who organizes career day and works as guidance counselor at Martin Meylin Middle School. “ W hen they speak to different presenters, they can lear n nuances about a career that you might not see when researching it online.” Martin Meylin Middle School held its first career day in 2016. School staff members wanted to assist students as they transitioned to high school, as they recognized that hearing from real professionals in the community could help students pick out courses that will would their goals. For many years, Mar tin Meylin Middle School has offered its students an online tool to explore career opportunities, but career day has allowed students to obtain a more realistic view of the working world. Every year, Eberly first contacts eighth-graders’ family members who may want to participate in career day as a guest speaker. Eberly also works with multiple local agencies to find presenters, and she tries to incorporate a wide range of vocations. Although the event features new speakers each year, certain occupations such as law enforcement and veterinary medicine are always highlighted due to their popularity among students. In the future, Eberly hopes to expand career

day to include additional grades. The event has been well received by students and their families, but additional guest speakers would be required for the school to offer it to a larger student population. “We’re always looking for different folks who want to come in,” Eberly said. “Anyone is always welcome to contact the middle school to be considered for the next career day.” For more information, call Martin Meylin Middle School at 717-464-3311.

dation for Animal Rescue. Amy Garrety, the organization’s founder, will attend the opening night of the exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3. Garrety and a team of volunteers and rescued dogs from the Sebastian Foundation will receive donations at the door. “We chose to have this show benefit Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue our very first year because they are a local nonprofit that really pours their all into helping the animals in our area find homes,” Kulfan said. “We have continued to have it benefit the Sebastian Foundation each year because the more we get to know them, the more we love them and all they do.” Mulberr y Art Studios partners with various school districts in Lancaster County to incorporate the show in art teachers’ curricula, allowing students to create pieces for the show during class time. Awards will be

given out for Best in Show and People’s Choice in the adult and youth categories. The recipients of the Best in Show award will be chosen by a panel of artists. Although accepted artwork will remain on display until the end of May, vendors will only be present during the opening reception. Last year, vendors sold a variety of items, including dog treats, pet accessories, pet portraits, animal grooming services and refreshments for humans. “ We get some really incredible artwork that is deserving of awards. But personally, my favorite part is when little kids have submitted art into the show,” Kulfan said. “I get to see their faces light up as they come into the building and see their artwork up on the gallery wall with all the other artwork.” For more information, visit https://mulberryart studios.com.

Knit one ... crochet 400

BY ANN MEAD ASH

About five years ago, when Erica Shirk moved from Pennsylvania to Ore gon, pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower of New Holland Mennonite Church (NHMC), 18 Western Ave., contacted Shirk’s daughter, Hilda, to ask what Erica had been doing for Union Community Care on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster. “Erica would make crafts for them,” explained Ranck-Hower, an avid crocheter who soon learned that Union Community Care was in need of afghans. RanckHower explained that the afghans are given to babies of immigrants who do not have a family member or friend here to make a handcrafted blanket for their baby. Ranck-Hower quickly connected with a few other crocheters at church, who then invited their family members to help out. The group’s first year making afghans for Union was 2021. More than 400 handmade items were created in 2023 and delivered in early 2024. R anck-Hower reported that 223 afg hans, 24

quilts, and 155 bibs were crocheted or knitted. “The year before that, we did about 200 afghans,” she said. The goal for the coming year is to donate at least 350 items. Ranck-Hower referred to the group of fiber arts aficionados as “a family affair,” noting that three family units are involved and that members have met together as a group only twice. Ranck-Hower has involved her sister Eileen R anck and her mother, Rosanna Ranck, who makes baby bibs as well as afghans. Sue Martin and her mother, Mar y S huot , are also involved, as are Dawn Kaczor and her family members, which include her daughter, Elsa Lantz, who lives in Colorado; mother, Valetta Kaczor; and sister, Carla Kaczor, both of whom live in the Souderton area. “ S u e a n d Daw n a re usually crocheting during c h u rc h ,” s a i d R a n c kHower, who is not bothered by attendees who crochet during her sermons because she understands that the hobby does not interfere with listening skills. “Ever ywhere we See Crochet pg 8

Crochet from pg 7 go, we’re crocheting,” she said. Dawn K aczor, an elementary school teacher, called the effort a “creative outlet,” noting that crocheting helps her to wind down at the end of the day. Martin crochets while attending Zoom meetings, and Eileen crochets while watching television in the evenings. The group members estimate that they work 15 to 20 hours a week creating 30-inch afghans. Dawn Kaczor’s husband delivers the items to the New Holland Pike Union Community Care

because it is near his work. “They have an average of 30 births a month,” said Dawn Kaczor. “When (expectant mothers) come for checkups before birth, they can pick a blanket.” “Nothing is rejected,” added Martin, who noted that some of the blankets are done in very bright colors and that the group members learned that Congolese women favor those blankets.
