Promise Players will present “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk” BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

T

Shows will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, Thursdays through Sundays, March 7 to 10 and 14 to 17. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. performance to conclude the weekend. Adults may purchase tickets for a suggested minimum

donation, and children 12 years old and younger may purchase tickets at a discounted price. Alternatively, children age 12 and under may pay for admission with a canned food item, which the Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. Doors will open one hour before each performance. Set in the western hills of North Carolina in the 1930s, “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk” tells the tale of an Appalachian family that comes together for a reunion at its old home. Some members of the family travel from their new homes in other parts of the South, and others still reside at the mountainside home. After gathering under the same roof for the first time in many years, the relatives reminisce about days past and discuss the importance of family and faith. The musical

By having a readily available change of underwear, nurses can help students resolve a situation quickly and return to the classroom to focus on their lessons. “You never know what’s going to happen. Someone could spill something in the cafeteria , or maybe a student just doesn’t have access to adequate clothing at home,” said Kristin Fernitz, director of the Strasburg-Heisler Library. “If a parent can’t get to school to provide a clean change of clothes, we can help.” The Drop Your Drawers program was started in Campbell, Ky., after a librarian learned that nurses at a local school purchased under wear with their own salaries to keep on hand for

Lampeter-Strasburg student emergencies. The librarian decided to start a collection to assist the nurses, and she contacted author Dav Pilkey to assist with the drive. Pilkey is the author of the children’s graphic novel series Captain Underpants, and he gave permission for the program to use his artwork for promotion. Shor tly after reading about the first Drop Your Drawers collection, Fernitz decided to bring the program to the Strasburg-Heisler Library. The library has continued to host the drive annually, and it continues to surpass its donation goal ever y year. Last year, the library received more than 1,000 pairs of underwear, and Fernitz hopes to exceed the drive’s 500 donation goal again this year. “New underwear is the most-asked-for item at clothing banks and distribution centers, but it is the least-donated item,” Fernitz said. “Most people don’t think about donating new underwear.” To streamline the donation process, Fernitz has made a wish list available o n l i n e fo r s u p p o r te r s to purchase the mostneeded items, which are t h e n s h i p p e d d i re c t l y to the library. Riddell worked at Black Rock Retreat Center for 26 years, during which time he became close friends with his co-worker Nancy Engel. Engel battled lung cancer for nearly eight years before passing away in July 2023. In addition to cycling in honor of Engel’s memory, Riddell has dedicated his ride to his sister-in-law Lisa Gregory, his friend Matt Bland and his next-door neighbor Bob Kauffman, each of whom has survived a battle with cancer. In addition to her duties as chapter chairperson, Cathy Bonser is a SCORE mentor.

“It’s a wonderful group of colleagues who have chosen to give back to the community. These are people who are working, and some are recently retired. Our mentors work together. They reach out to each other to co-mentor to best meet our clients’ needs.” The variety of businesses that SCORE assists is as diverse as the businesspeople who start them, everything from food trucks to publishing a book to therapists and yoga instructors, from farmers and painters to electricians, home contractors, landscapers and personal care. SCORE has the experience and resources to provide help. “Entrepreneurship is unique, and it’s not for everyone,” said Bonser. “It’s hard work, and you can’t assume. It’s very demanding. There are a lot of myths about what entrepreneurship is. You have to be a self-starter, and you’ve got to be resourceful. You’ve got to have good health, and you really need to have a supportive family. When entrepreneurs come to us, not all of them are ready to be in business or cut out to be in business.” The Lancaster chapter of SCORE was started in 1965, and in 2015, the Lebanon area was added. Lancaster-Lebanon is one of 230 SCORE chapters across the country. “The world has changed, but the core part of SCORE is the same,” said Bonser. “The way we mentor has changed, but we have access to more resources. At the end of the day, what continues is that mentor role and the guided assistance to individuals.” For additional information about SCORE, go to www .score.org/lancaster-lebanon.

which ranks it as one of the planet’s biggest polluters and contributors to poverty through sweatshop labor. Awareness of these issues has made some consumers begin to rethink their wardrobe choices and consider how they can make positive changes on a personal level. To find inspiration, people can look to the home seamstresses, professional dressmakers, and tailors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who were masters of “green” wardrobe management. They have left behind a wealth of information in publications and sur viving garments that demonstrate both their creativity and their frugality. The Fashion Archives and Museum at Shippensburg University features garments from ballrooms to discos and has loaned costumes for the Phillips Museum spring exhibition, “Ingrained: Celebrating Pennsylvania’s Cultural Heritage.” The lecture is open to the public at no charge, and preregistration is not required. This spring, the members of Strasburg-area Girl Scout Junior Troop 70163 are setting their sights on the highest award available to them as Juniors: the Bronze Award. To achieve this goal, each Scout must log at least 20 hours of work, including completing several badge requirements that explore ideas of leadership, strength, and teamwork, along with carrying out a large-scale community take-action project. For this type of project, Scouts must find the root cause of an issue and address it in a way designed to have a long-term impact. At the sug gestion of one of its members, Troop 70163 has chosen to direct its energies toward creating bat boxes. The boxes will help to support the bat population by serving as

homes for these creatures. Troop 70163 plans to work with the Lancaster County Depar tment of Parks and Recreation to learn more about bats; their impact on the environment, particularly in Pennsylvania; and how bat boxes may help. The Scouts will learn how to properly make bat boxes, and they will seek donations of plywood, paint, and other supplies from area businesses. The Scouts will also create fact guides related to the bat boxes. Businesses interested in donating materials may contact troop leader Kate Peck at kathr ynapeck@ gmail.com. Troop 70163 is part of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Central Pennsylvania’s Hans Herr Service Unit. For more information, visit www.gsep.org.
