Sertoma Club To Host Informational Picnics The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club will host two picnics for those wanting to find out more about the service club and to meet current club members. The informal picnics will be held on Wednesdays, July 18 and Aug. 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the pavilion at the Strasburg Community Park, Precision Avenue, Strasburg. Sertoma is a combination of the words “Service to Mankind.” The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, chartered more than 20 years ago, is one of hundreds of such clubs across the nation that are unified with the purpose of serving their respective communities and improving the quality of life for local folks in need. Members of the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club typically meet for a casual dinner once a month and raise funds by making and selling subs and helping to direct guests to parking at the Strasburg Rail Road
Company’s Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine. Since the club’s inception, the majority of the funds raised by the Strasburg Sertomans annually is used to help maintain the Strasburg Community Park. In addition, the group has contributed to many other local nonprofit entities such as the StrasburgHeisler Library, the Strasburg Scout House, Santa’s Helpers, and the Strasburg Cemetery. The club also sponsors scholarships for LampeterStrasburg graduates who have communication disorders or who are going to college to help those with hearing or speech challenges. One major contribution made to the community is the organization and implementation of the annual Memorial Day Parade in Strasburg. The proceeds from poppy sales at the parade are donated to local veterans organizations. See Sertoma Club pg 2
Strasburg Area Sertoma Club president Lynda Houck (left) and member Barb Rathbone-Frank invite folks interested in joining the service club to attend picnics at Strasburg Community Park on July 18 or Aug. 15.
Library To Welcome Mentalist-Magician Moms’ Day Out To Focus On Hope Reading this sentense is easy for many people ... reading minds is another story. Mentalist and magician Ran’D Shine, a Philadelphia native who has become a global phenomenon, will show off his unusual skill set in Strasburg on Monday, July 9. His highly interactive show will be held at the Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, at 7 p.m. Strasburg-Heisler Library director Kristin Fernitz had a one-on-one mind-reading experience with Shine in January. “If I hadn’t experienced this myself, I wouldn’t have believed it,” she said. “I can be very skeptical.” Shine is one of the most sought-after mentalists and magicians on the college circuit, and his show is intended for older teenagers and adults. His brand of magical comedy and entertainment has been on display at Hollywood’s “Magic Castle” as well as “Monday Night Magic,” New York’s longest-running Off-Broadway magic show. W hen Cristin Germaine planned the first Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2016, she was not sure how well the idea would be received. “When I started the journey, I didn’t know what to expect. I was just hoping to reach some single moms,” shared Germaine. That first year, 90 mothers took part, and in 2017, 125 women participated. “This year, within the first week of opening the registration, I had 70 single moms signed up, and now we’re at about 160,” said a delighted Germaine. “It’s fantastic how friends are bringing their friends.” The 2018 event has been planned for Saturday, July 21, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, See Moms’ Day Out pg 2
Cristin Germaine, founder of Lancaster Dare to Dream, spoke at the 2017 Single Moms’ Day Out. She will address the gathering again this year when the event is held at Calvary Church on July 21.

Tim Zimmerman and The King’s Brass will perform at Wesley Church in Quarryville on July 6. celebrating its 40th anniversary season with a new Christmas CD and a Caribbean cruise in March 2019. The CD, titled “Christmas Joy,” is the group’s 18th recording.

and that’s why we provide the child care.” However, Germaine made it clear that Single Moms’ Day Out is not just for mothers of young children. “This isn’t only for young single mothers raising their (children),” noted Germaine. “It’s for the older single moms whose (offspring) are grown. We’d love to include them as part of this event as well.” It takes about 150 volunteers to hold the annual Single Moms’ Day Out. Individuals who wish to volunteer may do so through the website mentioned previously.
Germaine hopes to raise $20,000 to fund the 2018 event. A banquet held in May raised about $10,000, and donations have brought the fund to about $15,000. Those who would like to help fund the event may do so online at the website. Women who wish to take part in this year’s event may register through the website or by searching for “Lancaster Dare to Dream” at www.eventbrite.com. Those who would like to participate are asked to register by Sunday, July 8.

from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The day will once again include praise and worship, two main speakers, seven 40-minute workshops, child care for children through fifth grade, and the Diva Shop. The day will open with praise and worship led by Liz Shoemaker. “There are two main sessions,” said Germaine, “one at the beginning and one at the end of the day.” This year, single mother Desovia Robinson, who led praise and worship at the 2016 event, will speak, as will Germaine. Women who attend will be able to select three of the seven workshops that will be offered. This year, the choices will include Co-parenting - The Challenge of Parenting Alone But Not Really; Bullying - Teaching Our Kids to Stand Up for Themselves and Others; Establishing a New Reality; To Simplify Your Life, Elevate Your Style; Dashboard - Learning to Be You; Bible Study - Boring or Greatest Adventure Ever?; and, a repeat from 2017, Disability - How It Impacts You and Positive Approaches to Moving Forward. “The (disability workshop) was one of the (most requested) last year,” said Germaine. “A huge (number) of single moms are dealing with children with disabilities.”
The Diva Shop is a popular spot at the event. Attendees receive Diva Dollars to use at the shop, which will feature a variety of gently used and new items including jewelry, scarves, purses, sunglasses, and flip-flops. Readers who wish to donate to the shop may do so at http://hope4singlemoms.us. This year, when Germaine speaks to the gathering, she plans to talk about the growth of the ministry. “I will speak about Lancaster Dare to Dream,” said Germaine, who noted that Dare to Dream groups have expanded from one church to three. “This year, I will focus on the ministries in the hope of getting moms plugged into those churches,” said Germaine, who noted that In the Light Ministries in Lancaster and Harvest Fellowship in Stevens are now both providing regular Dare to Dream meetings and support for area single mothers. “It was exciting to be able to open those,” said Germaine. Germaine said that she focuses on creating an event that will have a significant impact on those who attend. “I want it to be purposeful and meaningful,” she said. “As a single mom myself … my time is valuable. “This is a great organization for someone who is not interested in getting a lot of public acclamation,” said Strasburg Area Sertoma Club president Lynda Houck. “We are not about formalities and attending endless committee meetings. We are a small but mighty group that is unassuming. Our focus and energy are directed on action. We get things done and have a fun time doing so.” Houck noted that joining the club is a good way for newcomers to the area to get to know
others in the community. “Our club has always been a coed group and has a diverse membership,” she remarked. “Many of our members bring their significant others or families along to help out when we do a special event or project. We all love working together to enhance the Lampeter-Strasburg area.” For more information about the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club or to register to attend one of the upcoming picnics, readers may call club member Barb Rathbone-Frank at 717-572-6830.

The graduates on June 4 did not wear caps and gowns and they did not receive diplomas, but they all had four paws. This ceremony recognized the five canines that have successfully completed the UDS Service Dogs program. The large meeting room on the first floor of the new UDS facility at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, was filled with UDS clients, sponsors, trainers, and supporters, all of whom were there to cheer on littermates Brodey, Reece, and Renner, as well as Murray and Wyatt. “It is emotional - believing in them and the difference they’ll make in the lives of their people, commented Linda Rineer, who provided a puppy home for Reece and served as the secondary trainer for Brodey. The crop of graduates serve various functions for their owners. Brodey and Murray interact with students daily in the Northern York School District. Wyatt provides calm and comfort for clients during sessions at a counseling center in Philadelphia. Renner and Reece perform assistive tasks for their owners. Although their work differs, the dogs’ early training was similar. At 8 weeks old, each puppy was placed in a private home or assigned to an inmate at a Pennsylvania prison. The animals learned dozens of

Wyatt, a golden retriever, was one of five service dogs that graduated from the UDS training program in a ceremony held on June 4. The members of Team Wyatt raised the puppy from 8 weeks to 18 months. Wyatt now lives with Ida Devers (front) and her husband, Gene (not pictured), a counselor who finds Wyatt’s presence helpful to some of his clients. Ida took turns traveling to Lancaster to attend training sessions, and they brought him home full time in October 2017. “That first weekend, Gene said he had breakthroughs with clients he had for two to three years, Ida marveled. “He’s great. To express her gratitude to Schatz and Team Wyatt, Ida gave each team member a blue Tshirt commemorating Wyatt’s graduation. While the graduation is the first such event at the new facility, it will not be the last, and UDS Service Dogs staff members are excited for the possibilities. With nearly double the space, there is more room to move and to accommodate more dogs and
clients. A dog run and eight kennels are onsite, and five more are scheduled to be installed by September. Staff members can sign out kenneled dogs for walks or to spend time in their offices. Office manager Lori Breece noted that there are plans to convert a room off the training room into a puppy cuddle corner. A ribbon cutting was held on June 6, and an open house is planned for September. “We’re really pleased with this building, Breece remarked. For more information, readers may visit www.udservices.org or contact Breece at 717-715-8753 or lorib@udservices.org.

commands and became comfortable with people. At 18 months, the dogs were transferred to secondary trainers, who honed their skills and taught them tasks specific to their work assignments. While there were numerous supporters in the audience at the graduation event, Wyatt’s were the most obvious. Karen Schatz had provided a puppy home for Wyatt, but she was not alone in the effort. Her household also included two elderly people who used walkers and canes, 3-year-old twins, and several other children ranging in age from 4 to 8. Schatz and the children attended the ceremony dressed in bright yellow Tshirts imprinted with the outline of a large dog bone surrounding the words “Team Wyatt. “It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a team to raise a dog, Schatz remarked during the ceremony. Ida Devers accompanied Wyatt to the ceremony, as her husband, Gene, was meeting with clients at the counseling center. The Deverses had contacted several service dog organizations after Gene had met with a woman who had experienced a traumatic event. He felt that a therapy dog might help her work through the trauma. The only response came from UDS, and Ida said the folks she spoke with were excited to help. After being matched with Wyatt, Gene and
