LCAA To Host Festive Exhibit Kickoff

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC), in cooperation with Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area (MCWMA) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will hold a photo contest with the subject “Birds of Lancaster or Lebanon County.” The contest is sponsored by club member Len Eiserer, author of “The American Robin: A Backyard Institution.” Cash awards will be given to first- through third-place photographs in both adult and youth divisions, with an additional award for the best photo taken at MCWMA. Photos must be new and must have been taken since Aug. 1, 2017. They must be 8 by 10 inches and unmatted. The deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 1. All entries will be displayed at the Visitor Center at MCWMA. More information may be found at www.lancasterbird club.org under the Special Programs tab or by contacting club member Bettina Heffner at 717-393-2546 or bettinahef@msn.com.

FOCUS ON THE ’50S

The Lancaster Area Sewing Network invites sewists of all skill levels to attend a program on Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Friends Meeting House, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. The program will highlight the 1950s, with a discussion of fashions and sewing during that decade. Addie Lamberth will share how she transformed her 1950s wedding dress into a wearable, modern garment, and Debby Spence will demonstrate how to make a circle skirt, which was popular during that era, along with techniques used in the process. There will also be some garments on display, courtesy of a vintage clothing store in downtown Lancaster. Refreshments will be served. Guests may attend for a small fee. For more information, contact Carrie Rhinier at 717-572-2093 or CareEare@comcast.net.

Vintage vehicles, artists painting outdoors, oldies music, and more will create a festive atmosphere to kick off the “Roadside Attractions” art exhibit at the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The opening day affair will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 22. There will be lots to see and do both indoors and out during the celebration. Oldies music will be broadcast in the neighboring Strasburg Community Park pavilion, and vintage cars will be parked in the lot for visitors to examine. Artists may be observed as they work “en plein air,” and children may participate in games and activities. Food - including homemade baked goods - will available for purchase. Artwork may be acquired for set prices, and bids may be placed in a silent auction of quality items

donated by local businesses. Guests are invited to wear vintage clothing to the event, and they may bring lawn chairs and blankets to relax and enjoy the afternoon. The “Roadside Attractions” art exhibit will be on display in the LCAA’s Kauffman Gallery from July 22 to Thursday, Aug. 16. Summer is traditionally the time for road trips and vacations, so this themed membership show will focus on things on and off the road. Members of the art association have depicted their interpretation of roadside attractions in a variety of mediums and techniques. Additionally, Joanne Mark’s artwork will be displayed in the LCAA’s Steinmetz Gallery from July 22 to Aug. 16 in an exhibit titled “Figures: Ancient and Contemporary.” Recently, Mark has been using a limited palette to create See Exhibit Kickoff pg 2

“We’re partnering to get cats adopted,” Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders said of her organization’s collaboration with Furever Home Adoption Center. “We put the animals first, and we try to figure out the rest afterward.” Until recently, that partnership has primarily involved working to ensure that rescued or surrendered cats receive the medical care and safe homes they need. includes units on agriculture and society, watersheds and wetlands, the scientific method, and interaction with the environment, Strawser realized that L-S had an untapped resource in the form of the the high school’s active agriculture department. She contacted Oberholtzer, and together they put together an educational day of activities beneficial to students at both the elementary and high school levels. According to Strawser, the purpose of the day is for students to get a glimpse into the real-life application of their impact on the environment, as well as career options. Fifth-graders had the opportunity to interact with older students, examine and ask questions about equipment, and feed their interests in a variety of disciplines. For the agriculture science class, it was an opportunity to put what they have learned into practice as well as a chance to work with younger students. The older students had to develop and practice lesson plans, as well as adapt them on the spot. The Agriculture Department, Garden Spot FFA, and fifth grade hope to continue implementing this activity in future years.

GOTR Endowment Puts Focus On Future By Ann Mead Ash

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West never wants to see a girl miss out on taking part in the program because of a lack of funds. “The worst thing we can hear is that a girl didn’t participate because it costs too much money,” said West. “We want to make the program accessible to every girl regardless of financial limitations.” The GOTR endowment, created in honor of Ellen McCabe, West’s stepmother, and administered by the Lancaster Community Foundation, will work to make sure that never happens. “The money GOTR will (receive) from the endowment will go directly to financial assistance for girls in need,” explained West. GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson elaborated, “We will receive a percentage each year based on how much is in (the fund),” she said, adding that about half the girls who take part in the program receive scholarship funds. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. According to West, McCabe was an integral part of GOTR Lancaster from its inception in March 2009. “She talked to us about fundraising and helped us find donors,” said West, who noted that McCabe willingly shared her knowledge of how to run a nonprofit organization

R013762

with West and Johnson. “She was very much a cheerleader and encourager who got us really excited and helped us to stay focused throughout the entire process,” said West. “The entire way, (McCabe) was there giving us ideas and supporting us in any way we needed.” When McCabe passed away in the fall of 2016, West’s husband, Peter, made a suggestion. “My husband said, ‘Ellen loved GOTR, and she would do anything for it,’” shared West, adding, “She saw how it was changing these girls.” Peter suggested the family start an endowment fund in McCabe’s memory for GOTR. “Ellen felt no matter how much money you have, you should give a percentage away,” said West. Seeing the work of GOTR continue is important to both West and Johnson. “We want the same values to continue (into the future) for girls in the community and the thousands of girls we reach every year,” explained Johnson. “That can’t happen unless we have big-picture thinkers who value today and tomorrow equally. Our children are our future, and that is where hope lives.” According to Johnson, creating the endowment is an investment in the future. “(The endowment embodies) the intention to continue supporting girls for generations,” she said. West noted that the funds will support Lancaster-area young people in years to come. “Sustainability is key. Our thought process was that if you invest, you want to make sure the money will be used correctly,” she said. “Should GOTR ever cease to exist, the endowment will be used for another organization that supports youths in Lancaster.” Johnson lauded the Wests for their forward thinking. “Endowments create an important opportunity to keep money working positively in our community over time,” she said, noting that while many people make gifts to causes, only a small percentage leave funds to an organization. “When people are gone, their gifts are gone,” said Johnson. West said that she hopes area residents will consider the endowment in their planned giving. “We invite and encourage the community to give toward the endowment fund,” West said. Readers who would like to learn more about the endowment may visit www.lancfound. org/fund/girls-on-the-run -endowment-fund. Pictured on front: Ellen McCabe greeted a Girls on the Run (GOTR) 5K participant as she completed her run. McCabe’s family has given an endownment to GOTR Lancaster in her memory.

spay/neuter services, and supplies pet food for households experiencing financial distress. The Pet Pantry’s veterinarians have been able to treat illnesses and injuries in cats taken in by Furever Home, and Furever Home has cared for felines accepted by the Pet Pantry that do better in a cage-free environment where they can socialize with other animals. The two organizations also share volunteers. Now, the Pet Pantry has signed on to help with hosting Furever Home’s fourth annual summer shopping fair. “This is a way for us to support (Furever Home),” Sanders said. “This shows our staff members and volunteers working together. The community needs to see organizations working together to better the lives of animals in Lancaster County.” The shopping fair will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event will be open to the public free of charge, and well-contained pets will be welcome. The Pet Pantry’s canine ambassador, Sasha, is slated to be on hand to meet with shoppers. More than 100 vendors, crafters, and local businesses have registered to participate in the event, which Furever

Home fundraising chair Tina Krueger has carefully coordinated. “I want the consumer to have a wonderful shopping experience,” Krueger said. The first 100 adults to visit the shopping fair will receive goodie bags. There will be opportunities to win prizes and to participate in a vendor passport game. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Krueger noted that with the Pet Pantry’s assistance this year, there are enough volunteers to run concessions rather than outsourcing to a food truck. A food drive to benefit both organizations will be held during the shopping fair. Folks may receive an entry into a prize drawing for each cat item they donate. The wish list includes canned kitten food, wet or dry cat food, kitten meal replacement liquid, powdered kitten formula, paper towels, and bleach. The need for supplies is great. Between the two organizations, more than 500 cats have found forever families in the past year. Currently, the Pet Pantry has more than 50 cats in foster homes and 20 felines in its adoption room. Still more are sheltered by Furever Home. Additionally, the Pet Pantry provides an

average of 6,000 pounds of cat and dog food to households in need each month. Distributions are held in Gap, Collegeville, and Lancaster, as well as at Water Street Mission. “We’re trying to touch as many people as possible,” Sanders said, explaining the Pet Pantry’s geographic reach. Both the Pet Pantry and Furever Home exist through public support and private fundraising like the summer shopping fair. Volunteers are integral to the organizations’ operation. Krueger noted that

Pre-Season Sale

Furever Home can use folks to clean the adoption center or to attend networking events to provideeducation about the organization. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with the summer shopping fair, and sponsorships are available. Krueger invites folks with vendor, sponsorship, and volunteer inquiries to contact her at flippers1@aol.com or 717808-8108. Lampeter-Strasburg School District employees were honored at a recent banquet. Retiring employees who received recognition include Terry Sweigart, district business manager; Jeffrey Brown, district accountant; Charles “Bob Eavenson, Martin Meylin lead custodian; Diane Rhinier, assistant food service manager; Debra Smith, Martin Meylin kitchen helper; Teddi Book, high school nurse and 2016-17 Teacher of the Year; Mark Trach, high school physical education teacher; Katherine Stehman, elementary librarian; Susan Doll, Hans Herr music teacher and choral director; Emily Vasey, fourth-grade classroom teacher; Suzanne Meskers, Lampeter library assistant; Jean Sware, Lampeter principal’s secretary; Lisa Feerrar, sixth-grade English language arts teacher; Warren Hoffman, high school custodian; Linda Long Wettig, Hans Herr lead custodian; Dale Martin, field house custodian; Kimberly Nielsen, special education teacher assistant; Gary Schreckengost, social studies teacher; Sharon Styer, classroom aide; and Pamela Weidman, high school custodian. Combined, the 2018 retirees have 422 years of service to the community’s children. Their supervisors gave

play instruments from some nontraditional materials, she explained. “It’s going to be a blast! Sommer Singspiel, which in German means “play and sing in the summer, is in its fourth year. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students to experience German language and culture. In addition to music, the camp will focus on experiences with German language, authentic food, cultural traditions, and soccer and other outdoor games. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a learn-by-doing camp, and while it will be very valuable and meaningful, it will be taught in a fun, kid-friendly way, said founding director Drue Bullington. “(Sommer Singspiel) engages the younger family members and promotes in them a love of community music-making (and) a sense of cultural heritage and gives exposure to singing, playing, and moving - all things kids love to do naturally - in tandem with developmentally appropriate German

German cultural traditions. Bullington shared one parent’s perspective, quoting the individual as saying, “I love that German language, music, and culture is experienced rather than taught. For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel. The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, was founded in 1880 as a singing society by German immigrants in Lancaster city. It continues today as a dynamic family organization dedicated to perpetuating and amplifying the founders’ original purpose through song, dance, language, art, education, and international cultural exchange. The Sommer Singspiel camp will be held at the Liederkranz. There is a cost per student to attend, with discounts for Liederkranz members and for multiple family members. Registrations may be submitted at https://llksingspiel.wordpress. com. For more information about the camp, readers may contact Bullington at drue.bullington@gmail.com or 717-940-9927.

La Academia Marks 20 Years La Academia: The Partnership Charter School commemorated its 20th anniversary with a celebration party at Mulberry Art Studios on June 1. Aida Ceara, board president, thanked the community for its support of the school. La Academia will continue its dedication and commitment to serving Lancaster County youths as it recently received a five-year recharter from the School District of Lancaster. It was a unanimous vote from the School District of Lancaster’s school board on May 22. The school’s mission is being strategically refined as well as it envisions for its next 20 years and beyond. La Academia has formed a partnership with the Lancaster County STEM Alliance to create a foundation to become a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school for students in grades six through 12. La Academia is the only brick and mortar charter school in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The school has an enrollment of 200 students and was founded with the help of several local community organizations that partnered together to get the school its first charter. The school offers a small individualized program for students in Lancaster County from area school districts. For more information, readers may visit www.lapcs.org or search for “La Academia: The Partnership Charter School” on Facebook.

La Academia: The Partnership Charter School recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Attendees included (from left) Guillermo Barroso, chief academic officer; Aida Ceara, president of the board of directors; and Carlos Graupera, board of directors vice president and SACA president.

In May, the Lancaster Public Library received $3,500 in grant funding to support summer literacy. The library is the recipient of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Summer Reading grant ($2,000), as well as the Rotary Summer Youth Experience 2018 grant ($1,500), administered by the United Way of Lancaster County. The income will fund the Ticket 2 Read initiative. Ticket 2 Read is a summer reading enrichment program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade to enhance literacy skills by introducing children to books and educational content during their summer break. Children from urban summer camps who visit the library on field trips will be introduced to themed weeks of literacy activities facilitated by a professional librarian. The desired outcome is to enhance the children’s reading level during non-school months and prepare them for the next school year. In addition to offering a variety of fun, engaging, and educational programs, the Summer Reading Program prioritizes reading as an important daily activity to help prevent the “summer slide.” To learn more, readers may visit www.LancasterPublicLibrary.org/2018 -summer-reading-program.
