Two Festivals Will Mark National Recovery Month By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Community celebrations will be held in Lancaster to kick off and conclude National Recovery Month, which is observed in September. Both events will be held rain or shine at Buchanan Park, located at the corner of Buchanan and Race avenues, Lancaster. Recovery Rocks, a music festival celebrating recovery from addiction, will start things off on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Rick’s One Man Band, Apes of the State, Bad Luck Charms, and Half Past Dead. Admission, along with games and activities for children, will be free of charge. Food trucks will be on-site selling refreshments. The festival was previously hosted at The 521 Club, which is a sober club located in Manheim Township, but the

club opted to move the event to the park so that more people can attend, said event committee member Matt Supplee. “We wanted it to be more visible and overall accessible to the community,” added committee member Shawn “Kate” McNichol. For more information about Recovery Rocks, readers may contact Supplee at 717-940-9993 or matt_supplee @yahoo.com or call James Severson at 717-250-8582. Event updates will also be posted on The 521 Club’s Facebook page. Recovery Day Lancaster 2018 will be held at the park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The event will feature the Walk for Recovery, in which participants will circumnavigate the approximately 1-mile perimeter of the Franklin & Marshall College campus at 11 a.m. A barbecue lunch will be served for a small fee from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Three See Recovery Festivals pg 6

Archery Hunts Slated For Silver Mine Park FFA Members Attend State Convention By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The Pequea Township Park and Recreation Board is trying a new strategy in its wildlife management efforts. In an attempt to control the size of the deer population that lives in Silver Mine Park, 200 Silver Mine Road, Conestoga, the board will host archery hunts during the first two weeks of October. “The deer herd has gotten rather large around here,” noted board secretary Cynthia EvansHerr, who is also vice chair of the township’s board of supervisors. Park and Recreation Board chair Tim Weaver reported that at least eight deer have been hit by cars since October 2017. In addition to the pain and suffering inflicted on the animals and the destruction to private vehicles, a Southern Regional Police Department cruiser See Archery Hunts pg 2

Pequea Township Park and Recreation Board secretary Cynthia Evans-Herr (left) and chair Tim Weaver have organized an archery hunt that will be held at Silver Mine Park in October. Permission to hunt will be granted through a drawing that will be held on Sept. 12.

On June 12, 13, and 14, members of the Garden Spot FFA Chapter at Lampeter-Strasburg High School traveled to Penn State University to attend the 89th Pennsylvania FFA State Convention, which featured competitions, sessions, speakers, awards, and more. Attendees participated in Career Development Events (CDE) or Leadership Development Events (LDE). These events allowed members to gain knowledge about specific careers. Some CDEs and LDEs required members to attend county- or regional-level competitions before attending the state competition. During two days of testing and competitions, members competed for their chance to represent Pennsylvania FFA

at National Convention. Garden Spot FFA members competed and received awards. The Agricultural Mechanics Team placed ninth. Individually, Dylan Lechner placed 26th, Jordan Martin placed 29th, Roddie Rice placed 36th, and Austin McFalls placed 43rd. The Meat Evaluation Team placed second. Individually, Tobias Leaman placed third, Stephanie Mays placed seventh, and Carter Meck placed 23rd. The Small Gas Engines Team placed sixth. Individually, Bryce Johnson See Garden Spot FFA pg 5

The hunt is insured, and approval was granted by the board of supervisors at the April meeting, by the township supervisor, and by the township ’s insurance company. Evans-Herr noted that the entire process has been based on the example set by the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s elk hunt. The drawing will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Park and Recreation Board meeting that will begin at 7 p.m. at the New Danville Fire Company, 43 Marticville Road, Lancaster. Winners do not need to be present. While anyone may enter the drawing, only licensed hunters may take part in the hunt, and all state game regulations will be in effect. Disabled hunters are encouraged to participate, and accommodations will be provided as needed. Weaver noted that if donations are received beyond the cost of producing the hunt, the excess amount will most likely be used to purchase native grass seeds and plants to expand the meadows. “Meadows bring in more pollinators, Evans-Herr explained. “We’re all about pollinating. We want to be part of the initiative (to benefit) our farmers. For more information or to enter the drawing, readers may call Weaver at 717-672-1479.

The hunts are not designed to eliminate the herd, but the hope is that with fewer animals living in the park, there will be fewer animals crossing roads, thus reducing the chances of collisions. Evans-Herr noted that the good news is that the herd is healthy; chronic wasting disease has not be identified there as it has in other herds in the region. Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. However, Panzini could not find something that quite fit her needs. “I got together with some other mothers of children with special needs, and we decided to create our own (program),” said Panzini. The resulting program currently serves six individuals. “Our participants came from word of mouth,” Panzini explained. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.,” explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through

mid-August. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment full-day program,” she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up” job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang,” said Panzini. “We baked for four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and gluten-free treats, and the next day the campers set up a table in the lobby.” “That was a very successful

th

day,” said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building),” Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that aspect,” Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office work or cleaning, we can help,” she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big part of (participants’) days.” Panzini added that the campers are already helping Lori Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation, in a number of ways. In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and

59 Anniversary August 6-11, 2018

Rittenhouse have planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables),” said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in specialneeds classes and camps since she was 8,” said Panzini. “We have a lot of teachers advising us.” Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. Individuals with questions may email reeniepanzini@aol.com.

The 2017 All Pontiac Show hosted by the Susquehanna Valley GTO (SVGTO) drew 187 vehicles. “We typically get guests from eight to 10 states, SVGTO president Vic Schreck said. “Many will trailer their cars. We’ll secure an area hotel with an event discount for those who wish to stay overnight. Last year’s show was the 10th hosted by the SVGTO. In June this year, the club used its expertise to host the 39th annual GTO Association of America (GTOAA) International Convention in Valley Forge. More than 300 Pontiacs from the United States and Canada were entered in the event. A total of 414 people registered for the convention, which was the largest since 2004, when it was held in Pontiac, Mich. “The longest distance driven was a guy in his 1965 Le Mans who drove it 2,500 miles from Spokane, Wash., and then drove it back, marveled Schreck, who was recently installed as the GTOAA national president. The GTOAA has about 4,000 members from the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. The SVGTO hopes to draw another big crowd for the 11th annual All Pontiac Show, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1670 Nissley Road, Landisville. Registration will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. A registration fee will be charged for exhibited vehicles, with a discount for those entered by Saturday, Aug. 11. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.

from the show will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania. The SVGTO collects donations yearly and presents them at Christmastime, when the club cooks one of two meals that it annually prepares for families staying at the home in Hershey. The SVGTO was named the 2013 GTOAA Chapter of the Year and is one of the most active of the 38 chapters in the national organization. It has 90 members in states along the East Coast, ranging as far south as Florida. “We’re more regional than just the Susquehanna Valley region, Schreck commented. For more information or to register for the All Pontiac Show, readers may visit www.svgto.com, email svgtoshow@svgto.com, or call 717-405-2178, 717-521-8277, 717-615-7117, or 717-880-5692. The Junior Girl Scout Troop of the Hans Herr Service Unit displayed an art exhibit titled “I Am Unique and We are Strong” on First Friday, June 1, at Warehouse210 in Lancaster. The exhibit was the culmination of the Drawing Badge and the Agent of Change Journey, a set of three badges. Early in the year, the troop had set goals for itself, including earning these badges. Troop co-leaders Jen Young and Tracie Kortright led the Scouts in achieving their goals. Local professional artist Ramon Trevino volunteered to teach the Scouts some basic techniques of drawing, including shading and perspective. He shared his inspirational story with the Scouts and leaders. Next, the Scouts started the Agent of Change Journey, which focused on the power of the individual and the power of a team. The Scouts learned that their own unique talents, when paired with the unique talents of others, can bring about significant change in the local community and the world. The art

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 14th annual Celebration of Achievement on June 3 in the Johnston Auditorium of the Lancaster Masonic Center. A total of 10 children were graduated from the program. This year marked a total of more than 100 graduates from the program. Heather Hinkel, director of the center, addressed the graduating students, returning students, tutors, and governing board, thanking them for the work each provides to the program. Each graduate was given an keepsake autograph bear, as the bear is the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.’s mascot. Students thanked their tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The Center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania that provides tutoring at no charge to children from elementary through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The OrtonGillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. The method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served nearly 200 children. Between 25 and 30 children receive tutoring throughout the year, and nearly as many children are on the waiting list. Funding for the program, which averages $6,000 per student per year, comes in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. Some of the
