Women’s Group To Study “Sermon On The Mount” Change of Pace South (COPS), a community women’s Bible study supported by the Friendship Foundation, will begin its fall session on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. The interdenominational group has been meeting in southern Lancaster County for 18 years and welcomes women of all ages and church affiliations. Each Wednesday gathering runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and includes breakfast refreshments, praise and worship, a video teaching session, and small group discussion. There is also a prayer group that meets during the morning activities. In contrast to previous years, just one course of study will be offered this fall. “Sermon on the Mount” by Jen Wilkin is an in-depth exploration of the words of Jesus in Matthew 5-7 with the aim of understanding the message as it was originally given and heard. three chapters include some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture: the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, the Golden Rule, and many other teachings that are even recognized by popular culture, but in fragmented form. With an overarching theme of kingdom citizenship, in this section, Jesus delivers a well-ordered, cohesive message that challenges listeners to think differently about what it means to be His follower. This study is an invitation to take a figurative seat on the mountainside and learn from Jesus, just as His disciples did. Studies at COPS are selected so that all women can learn together whether they are completely new to Bible study or highly advanced. Wilkin teaches practical methods for studying the Bible, which are incorporated in the daily workbook lessons. She encourages women to learn everything they See Change Of Pace South pg 3

Conference Will Explore Amish Issues Pet Pantry’s Mobile Unit By Dayna M. Reidenouer

As far as Torah Bontrager can tell, she is the first Amish person to graduate from an Ivy League school. Bontrager’s path to Columbia University was fraught with pain, however, and she shared her story in her memoir, “An Amish Girl in Manhattan: Escaping at Age 15, Breaking All the Rules, and Feeling Safe Again,” which was published in 2017. Bontrager’s experiences led to the formation of the Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF), which is dedicated to advocating for people inside and outside the Amish Church - what is known in nonAmish societies as “Old Order” - and making the transition smoother for those who have left or wish to leave. “We’re the only nonsectarian institution that advocates for Amish people and engages their issues and educates the general public,” Bontrager commented.

Nearly 350 vehicles were entered in last year’s Conestoga Classic car show, and organizers hope to attract at least that many at this year’s event, the fifth annual, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street, Conestoga. “It’s the talk of cruisers everywhere,” said Rae Ann Henry, secretary of Friends of the Southern Regional Police Force, which hosts the car show. “People are telling me they’re already registered. They want to be part of the first 200. We have the best goodie bags.” As Henry indicated, the first 200 entries will receive a goodie bag and a souvenir dash plaque. All registered participants will receive lunch, which will be provided by the Conestoga Fire Company, and they will be entered to win door prizes. To encourage early registration, a discount on the entry fee will be offered until Saturday, Sept. 15. Folks who wait to register at the event will be charged full price. Participants may arrive when

they are able and leave at their leisure. In order to be parked together, car clubs must arrive as a group. Hot rods, antiques, new muscle cars, motorcycles, pickup trucks, and more will be parked on Main Street from Rineer Road to the Conestoga Wagon Restaurant. Parking for spectators will be located at the fire company, 3290 Main St., and Conestoga Elementary School, 100 Hill St. The car show will be held rain or shine. “We’re praying for no rain. So far, we’ve been blessed (with dry days) for four years,” commented Friends member Melanie Scheid.

“It’s the busiest day in town. It’s fun to see the streets full of people.” “We bring all the happy we can to Conestoga,” Henry added. The hub of the event will be located at the fire company and the neighboring Conestoga Ambulance Association, which share a driveway. The door prize drawings and award ceremony will take place at the ambulance building. Prizes will be awarded in 10 categories, with most winners selected by trophy sponsors. Disc jockey Bryan Scott will serve as master of ceremonies, and DJ Edge will play music. Lancaster

Barnstormers mascot Cylo is slated to visit at some point. The fire company will sell cold beverages and hot food, including chicken corn soup, burgers, hot dogs, and french fries. Ice cream will also be available for purchase. A number of vendors will sell their wares at the fire company. Friends president Bob Heckrote noted that due to limited space, vendors have been restricted to sellers of non-food, automotiverelated items. Anyone interested in vending may call Heckrote at 717-472-0087 to learn more. Additionally, for a small fee, folks may whack a car. Last year, eventgoers were offered the opportunity to write on a vehicle, but this year, they may apply sledgehammers instead of pens. Proceeds from the car show registrations and the whack-a-car activity will be divided between the Friends and the fire company. “From day one, (the fire company) got behind us and supported this event,” said Friends vice president Joel Herzog. The Friends of the Force has used past proceeds to support a National Night Out event and to host officer appreciation banquets for the Southern Regional See Car Show pg 9

Janie Womack and Jody Echterling will perform at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 15. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Womack and Echterling have both been playing music since they were children. Both are self-taught, accomplished musicians who have been performing in the central Pennsylvania area for many years in various groups, Echterling as a rock drummer and vocalist and Womack as a vocalist and guitarist. Together they play acoustic music from the 1950s to the present, including country, popular, alternative, and blues music, as well as old standards and ballads. Admission to the event is free. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s honed,” said Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. “We will start scheduling more appointments (after the) fall, and we’re hoping to find someone to pull it. (Once it’s fully operational), I think it will be a valuable resource for the community.” The mobile unit was designed to serve three purposes. First, the traveling veterinary facility can host feral clinics on farms or in communities where feral cats live in abundance. Spay/neuter and vaccination services will be available during those clinics. “We’re trying to get a trapneuter-release initiative going,” Sanders said. “We’re willing to work with communities who can get out there and trap (feral cats).” Second, the mobile unit can host vaccine clinics for family pets. It is important to ensure animals are current on protection from rabies, distemper, and other viruses. Third, the brightly colored trailer will be an eye-catching addition to promotional events. It is air-conditioned, so cats that are available for adoption will be able to rest comfortably for folks to meet inside. The open house will include self-guided tours of the Pet Pantry’s headquarters, visits with adoptable cats, a meet-andgreet with canine mascot Sasha, and refreshments. Pets are welcome to accompany their owners and pose together for fall fun pictures for a fee. A limited number of Halloween costumes will be available for pets to wear in the photos. Additional costumes

may be purchased in the fully stocked thrift shop. Folks may also buy tickets for the third annual bingo fundraiser that will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Columbus Association, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster, and order their bulbs for the annual Light the Way to Meet the Need event. Bulbs may be dedicated in memory or honor of pets and people. They will be displayed at the Pet Pantry during December, and a lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. Pictures with Santa Claus will be available for a fee from 3 to 6 p.m. that day. There is no cost to attend the open house, but attendees are asked to bring dry food for dogs and cats. “It’s our opportunity to fill our shelves with the food we need to prepare for the holiday season,” Sanders said. “We do a double distribution in November and none in December so that everyone has what they need for the holidays.” The Pet Pantry regularly distributes 5,000 pounds of pet food each month. Distributions take place in Gap and Coatesville, as well as at Water Street Mission and the Pet Pantry. The organization supplies food to rescue groups on an emergency basis. The Pet Pantry also supports more than 140 cats that are available for adoption. Most of the animals live in foster homes, but a few temporarily reside at the Pet Pantry. About 15 felines are anticipated to be present at the open house. For more information about the open house, readers may call 717-983-8878, email petpantry oflancaster@gmail.com, or visit www.petpantrylc.org.

Lady Booters Top Mares, Golfers Sit In First by Mona Steinhauer

Lampeter-Strasburg’s girls’ soccer team returns seven starters from a squad that went 13-5 a year ago so it should be expected that they will at least reach that mark this year if not surpass it. The girls opened the season last Tuesday afternoon with a 4-2, non-league road win over Solanco

but games against Hershey and Northeastern were postponed due to weather. After 33 minutes of scoreless ball against Solanco, the visitors broke the game open with four goals over the next eight minutes. Toby Harnish scored twice in a minute to break the ice while Danielle Dipace and McKena Conklin extended

Lampeter-Strasburg’s Austin Lauver turned in a round of 38 to finish tied for third in the individual standings and help the Pioneers to a second-place finish behind Cocalico in last Wednesday’s Section Three match at Iron Valley.

the advantage scoring within two minutes of each other. Despite not having the luxury of Lampeter’s depth, Solanco rallied with a pair of second half goals but could get no closer. “You’re always happy to get a win, but I was disappointed in our overall performance in the second half,” said head coach Emily Lebo. “Solanco was relentless and deserves recognition for playing the whole game and persevering through the heat and their halftime deficit. “We have a great group of returning players and have the skill and ability this year to make some moves but we need to learn to put together a full 80 minutes of soccer and that includes finding the net with quality goals,” she added. “Our team unity and cohesiveness will prove to be our biggest strength if the girls can continue to hold on to it as the season progresses.” GOLF At the midway point of the golf season, the Pioneers sit in a first place tie with Octorara, both with a 16-4 record. Cocalico, at 15-5, is right in the mix. With the high temperatures last week, the golfers played just nine hole at Iron Valley and finished in second place, one stroke behind Cocalico’s 157. Austin Lauver tied Cocalico’s Ammala Moua with a 38 while Katherine Lapinsky and Patrick Holmes, both with a 39, matched the Eagles’ Ian Martin and Matt Slovik. But it was Cocalico’s Bradley Steiert that proved to be the difference. His 41 was just a single stroke better than Matt Wilson and Gehrig Harsh who both carded 42’s. At Mocassin Run a week earlier, Lauver recorded the lowest total of the day (71) but the Pioneers finished one stroke behind Octorara (325). Their first league match of the season was just as tight. Lauver tied Octorara’s Hunter King with a match-low 72 but the Eagles finished on top with a 234 and the

Braves nipped the Pioneers again by a single stroke. CROSS COUNTRY The Pioneer harriers opened the 2018 season at Northern Lebanon last Tuesday and came home with a pair of hard earned wins. The team battled the uncomfortable weather conditions and earned a 25-33 win over the hosts and held off Elco as well, 29-32. Jansen Miller led the way with a fifth place finish in 19:00 but teammates David Helms (7th, 19:13), Daniel McMichael (8th, 19:23), freshman Luka Vranich (9th, 19:30) and Thomas Sellers (10th, 19:31) were close behind and finished ahead of Elco’s fourth and fifth place runners. “We have five freshmen boys and a senior who hasn’t run since junior high,” noted head coach Mari Cunningham. The girls’ team also found themselves in a tight race with Elco but came up short, 27-28, after blanking Northern Lebanon 15-55. The Pioneers actually had their fifth runner place before Elco’s fifth but the Raiders’ earned the top two finishes of the day to help pull out the win. Kayla Drouillard (3rd, 23:32), Colleen Gilbert (4th, 23;35) and Micah Gordley (5th, 23:35) were Lampeter’s top finishers while Hannah Schultheis (8th, 24:32) and Payton King (11th, 25:27) rounded out the top five. “Losing our top three runners from last year will create a challenge this season,” said Cunningham, “but this team has bonded quickly and are excited to encourage one another throughout the season. The girls had a nice pack with Kayla, Colleen and Micah coming within three seconds of each other,” she added. “It’s disappointing to think that one switch of runners with Elco would have changed the win, but encouraging to know that it was a competitive race.” TENNIS Just about at the midway point

ADVERTISER - Lampeter-Strasburg Edition of their season, the girls’ tennis team sits at 5-1 with five shutouts to their credit. Their lone loss was a 4-3 heartbreaker against Lancaster Mennonite on August 24. Last week the girls blanked Lebanon, E-town and Ephrata. Sarah Capoferri (1), Larson Kessler (2), Kendall Winters (3) and Sierra Stoltzfus (4) dominated singles playing giving up just two singles games while the doubles teams of Capoferri and Stoltzfus, Kessler and Izzy Brown and Winters and Ryan Gerhardt all posted 8-0 wins against the Cedars. E-town was able to take a few

more games but the final result was another Pioneer shutout. Brown, playing No. 3, put up the toughest singles battle of the day, outlasting her opponent 7-5, 6-7, 10-7. The doubles teams of Capoferri and Kessler, Stoltzfus and Brown and Winters and Gerhardt all posted 8-2 wins. The girls’ rounded out the week with yet another solid performance in blanking Ephrata. The doubles teams yielded just three games with Brown and Stoltzfus posting a shutout. Singles play was just as strong as Ephrata managed to take just five games on the day.

FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team, with nine starters back, is off and running. They opened the season with a pair of dominating wins; 8-1 over Ephrata and 6-1 over Lancaster Mennonite last Tuesday. And Saturday morning blanked CV, out of Section One, 2-0. “We are better than last year,” said head coach Katrina Swarr. “We are solid all over the field. We have multiple scorers. We have really good ballhandlers and we are absolutely loving the turf.” Against the Blazers, Chloe Blantz notched a hat trick and dished out

one assist. Daisy Frank, who set up the offense with three assists, Julz Garber and Abby Thorius helped pad the lead. Saturday morning’s contest was a bit closer but the Pioneers prevailed. After a scoreless first half, L-S punched in two second half goals despite being out cornered 11-7. Blantz, assisted by Frank, put the hosts in front in the 17th minute and then, taking a feed from Julia Smecker, iced the win just 22 seconds before the final horn sounded.” “I was a little concerned because they have one player, Abby Morley, who seems to do the bulk of their scoring,” noted Swarr. “And CV always plays us tough.” VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team opened its season with mixed results last week. Tuesday they overcame a sluggish first game loss, 25-19, and rallied for three straight wins, including a 25-22 set four thriller, to pull off a 3-1 victory at Lebanon. Two days later, against perennial Section Two power Garden Spot, the girls’ got off to another slow start, losing the first set 25-22, but this time never recovered. The hosts went on to win 25-10, 25-16. Haley Hoover led the way with six kills but it wasn’t enough to stop Garden Spot’s Shawna Zeiset (16). She also recorded eight digs and four blocks. Sierra Stoltzfus chipped in with 20 assists and Lillian Hoke dished out three assists. Solanco last Tuesday and then dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker against Section One’s Warwick on Thursday. With temperatures in the 90’s, Lampeter’s depth played a role in their shutout over the Mules. Holding a 3-0 lead at the break, the hosts racked up five second half tallies to put the game out of reach. Derek Eckman’s hat trick, along with two assists, ignited the offense. Caden Wise added two goals while Logan Heister, who led with three assists, Lucas Baker, and Max Franco also found the back of the net once. In goal, Braedon Karpathios and Calieb Wigley each recorded one save. Thursday’s game in Lititz was decided on a second half goal as both teams scored twice in the opening half. Eckman and Seth Beers both lit the board for the Pioneers. FOOTBALL The Pioneer football team shook off a 14-0 first quarter deficit and broke a fourth quarter tie en route to a 35-28 thriller in their home opener over West York last Friday night. “We knew it was going to be a tough game and we figured it would be close,” said head coach John Manion. “We did a nice job executing the offense and we made some big plays on defense when we needed to.” With 4:46 left in the game, and the score tied at 28, L-S started its game-winning drive that resulted in a four-yard run by Joey Underwood

(85yds on 11 carries). Not to be out done, West York threatened to counter, driving to the Pioneer 24 but an interception in the end zone by Cam D’Imperio sealed the visitor’s fate. “Cam made that interception and recovered a fumble, both in the fourth quarter,” noted Manion. “That was big. And defensively we had four sacks, 2.5 by Tyler Phenegar, who also had three hurries. Putting the pressure on their quarterback all night helped.” Sean McTaggert’s (117 yards) six yard scamper put the locals on the board early in the second frame but West York countered with a 65-yard passing TD for a 20-7 lead. McTaggert answered that score with a 16-yard run to paydirt and then then found Jacob Kopelman with a 20 yard scoring strike that put L-S in front, 21-20 at the break. After a scoreless third, Bryan McKim’s two-yard TD run was answered by West York’s 5-yard passing TD and two point conversion that set the stage for Underwood (7 catches, 52 yards). McTaggert completed 12-of-16 passes for 160 yards and McKim rushed 73 yards on nine carries. “Sean was a bit more accurate tonight and Bryan put together his third strong game of the year,” noted Manion. “I also thought JT Hake and Gabe Frederick played really well on run support.” The Pioneers open Section Two play this week against their biggest opponent to date, Conestoga Valley. “We have to negate their size with our speed,” Manion said.

Individuals are invited to attend an information session for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to receive valuable information to assist persons in making a well-informed decision about their health and drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total outof-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us. Sessions will take place at the
