Marie Monville did not set out to be a public speaker, but as the widow of Charlie Roberts, the man who perpetrated the West Nickel Mines School shooting in 2006, she has sought to turn her pain and tragedy into a blessing for others. She recounted her spiritual journey in her book, “One Light Still Shines: My Life Beyond the Shadow of the Amish Schoolhouse Shooting,” which was published in 2013, and she is part of the Ambassador speakers bureau. “We have heard incredibly wonderful things about her ministry,” commented Neil Uniacke, executive director of New Hope Community Life Ministry, which has invited Monville to be the guest speaker at its 16th annual banquet, set for Thursday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m. at Refton Brethren in Christ See New Hope Banquet pg 2

Church, 110 Church St., Refton. “Marie will be free to share her heart,” he continued. “She’s an amazing speaker.” Uniacke noted that past banquets have featured speakers who talked about the work New Hope does in the community. While Monville does not have a direct link to the ministry, Uniacke was part of the Lancaster County Critical Incident Stress Management team that responded to the school shooting. He spent the tragic day and the week following interacting
with the first responders and the families of those in the school community. Uniacke’s heart for hurting people is the driving force behind his work at New Hope. “No judgment - compassion - is the most important part of what we bring to the counseling process,” Uniacke said. “Marie is compassionate. When you’ve experienced hurt, you can recognize it in others.” New Hope offers Christ-centered, biblically based, relational counseling, with a sliding fee scale available for folks experiencing financial difficulty. All of the counselors who work through New Hope provide general counseling services, but they
will add a faith element upon request. “We are people of faith, but we work with (everyone),” Uniacke explained. “The client controls (the frame of discussion). If and when they’re ready, we will talk about the spiritual dimension with them.” The annual banquet is one way that the public may support the ministry of New Hope. There is no cost to attend the event, but table sponsorships are available, and there will be an opportunity to donate during the evening. Proceeds will be used to offset costs associated with counseling services, community outreach programs such as Strengthening Families, and the Community Closet thrift store. A video has been made to tell the story of New Hope and promote Monville’s participation in the banquet. Any church,

The one-act play will be performed at 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, and at 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26. characters were inspired by an actual couple who lived in and cared for Rock Ford during the 1930s and 1940s before the house was opened to the public as a museum. In the play, the caretakers will lead visitors on a candlelit tour of the mansion and share stories about Rock Ford and its inhabitants since the early 19th century. The show was originally performed at Rock Ford in 2013. Performances are limited to 20 people, and reservations are required. The event is not recommended for children under age 12. Wally Calderon, artistic director with Servant Stage Company, admits that there is an element of preconception in staging “Titanic,” the 1997 musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. “There is no surprise ending,” said Calderon of the musical that has been on his shortlist of shows for some time. Calderon loves the show because of its “character-driven depiction” of the historical events and the stories it tells that draw audience members into the story. “(Audience members grow) attached to the historical figures involved,” said Calderon. “That’s the magic of the show … the power of the story.” Calderon is working with Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer to bring the show to the stage in partnership with Lancaster Bible College (LBC) at the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, for two weekends in September. “Titanic” will run on Fridays, Sept. 21 and 28, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. Calderon noted that the ensemble piece tells many stories rather than one story. “You are hearing every angle of the events that

to tell the stories of the cast members, delving into their backgrounds, hopes, and dreams. “What a Remarkable Age This Is,” is sung by the first-class passengers on the promenade deck, followed by “Lady’s Maid,” a song that describes the hopes of third class passengers coming to America. Other standout songs include “The Telegraph Song” and “The Proposal.” During Act 2, figurative masks are dropped from the characters’ faces as the ship begins to sink. “In Act 2 you start to see the real people (in) how they react (to the disaster) - especially among the first-class and upper-level crew,” said Calderon. “You get inside the characters more, and it keeps you fully invested in (the story).” Such a heavy subject is not without comic relief. Calderon described a middleclass couple named Bean from Indianapolis whose demeanors remain the same throughout the show. “All (Mrs. Bean) wants to do is rub elbows with the first class … even as the ship is going down,” he said. The performance is open to the public on a pay-what-you-will basis. To reserve seats, readers may visit www.servantstagecompany.com or call 717-560-8241.

are happening as they’re happening,” he said. “You get a true feel for what it was like in third class and first class and among the officers and for the crew and second class … relationships between couples and what (individual) objectives and agendas are,” said Calderon. “Titanic” has been one of Bauer’s favorites as well. “(The show) swept the Tonys, (winning) best musical, score, book, orchestration,” said Bauer, who added that the show is seldom staged because of its large cast of nearly 70 and its musical requirements. “To do it justice, it has got to have a full orchestra and a minimum of 40 incredible voices,” said Bauer. The show is musically demanding, featuring about 30 musical numbers. “The music is an integral part of the storytelling,” said Calderon. “Every scene is underscored with a theme or (musical) dynamics to make the audience feel what they’re supposed to feel.” Calderon added that the opening number, which is nearly 15 minutes long, is used as an introduction. “You meet the characters. You see the classes boarding. You see the crew assemble, and (the song) ends with the ship setting sail.” During Act 1, musical numbers are used

Tape, Trees, And More Harvest Festival Will Feature Historic Crafts
“This is really like coming home,” said Susan Faulkner Weaver, reflecting on her planned participation as a demonstrator at the Conestoga Area Historical Society’s annual Harvest Festival, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 23, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place on the society’s museum grounds, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. “It struck me that this is my own background, and I should be involved,” Weaver continued. She noted that she graduated from Penn Manor High School and then Millersville University. Her interest in handweaving has taken her to Mexico, and she has explored a wide range of weaving techniques from an array of cultures. Recently, she published a book on handwoven tape. Before the invention of elastic and zippers, Americans in the 18th and early 19th centuries used narrow bands of woven tape to fasten their clothing, close sacks, and even hold up their stockings. “In Pennsylvania German culture, communities had village weavers (of cloth),” Weaver explained. “Tape looms were small, portable devices. Almost every household had one. They were so valuable. Family members would take turns weaving - if you had a spare minute, you’d sit down at the loom and weave a few rows. Everyone had a hand in it, from children to grandparents.” During the Harvest Festival, Weaver will have a variety of tapes and looms displayed, and folks may try their hands at weaving. Other fiber artists will be on hand to demonstrate spinning, dyeing,

and cloth-weaving. Another German-influenced craft is that of feather trees. Ron and Carol Wardell of Lititz will display examples of the holiday decorations, which were popular from the mid- to late-1800s. Carol explained that the trees were invented in Germany as the result of deforestation. They are made by wrapping goose feathers around straight branches to create sparse yet strong frames from which to display ornaments. “The oldest ones are 5 or 6 feet tall,” Carol remarked. “I can’t imagine making that.” Based on a design perfected by Ron, who is a mechanical engineer, Carol makes feather trees that range in height from 18 to 54 inches. Ron continues to assist by building museum reproduction bases and attaching the wrapped branches to the trunks. Additionally, the couple manufactures natural sisal “bottle brush” trees, German-style sheep, a variety of fences and structures, and ornaments. “Both of our grandparents were Germanic, so we stick with those,” Ron

Saddlebag Riders To Support Wounded Warrior Project
By Ann Mead Ash
Garret Yoder, a member of Scout Troop 8, which meets at the Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church, knew David G. Haldeman because the longtime Paradise Rotary Club member was serious about his position as charter representative with the troop. “Haldeman was the charter representative for 30 years,” said Garret’s father, Kevin. “He came to Scout picnics and banquets.” After Haldeman passed away in March of 2017, Scoutmaster Luther Wagner recommended Garret find a way to honor the Rotarian with his Eagle Scout project. “I was walking through (Flory Park off Strasburg Pike) in the summer of 2017,” recalled Garret. “I noticed this area was empty, and I thought it was a good spot to put an Eagle Scout project.” Garret considered what to do with the open area located in front of a stone wall, and he decided that a bench and a plaque would give area residents a chance to relax
and learn about Haldeman’s service to the community. The plaque that the Paradise Rotary sponsored for the site lists Haldeman’s membership in the Bird-inHand Fire Company, his volunteerism with the Scouts, his charter membership with the East Lampeter Park Board, and his nearly 60 years of perfect attendance at Rotary Club meetings among his accomplishments. Garret received approval for his project from Scout administrators on Sept. 11, 2017. The park board approved the placement of a bench on the spot in the same month. He and his father, supported by his mother, Carla, began working on the bench in late 2017 and continued into the winter of 2018. “We poured the concrete into molds at home,” explained Garret, who said the bench was completed in May and placed in the park, 416 Dohner Dr., Lancaster, on June 16. The plaque was added during a special ceremony attended by Rotary Club members and Haldeman’s widow, Mary, on

L-S Tennis Scores 6th Shutout, Now 6-1 Overall by Mona Steinhauer
The Pioneer racket club, with their sixth shutout of the season, improved to 6-1 overall and leads the Section Two pack with a 3-0 mark after last Wednesday’s hard-fought result against Garden Spot.
Sarah Capoferri improved to 7-0 with a 6-2, 6-1, No. 1 win over Elle Hallquist while Larson Kessler had a tougher battle at No. 2 but survived Paige Kemper 2-6, 6-2, 10-5. Izzy Brown pulled away with a No. 3 win over Ashley Risser, 6-4, 7-5 and Ryan Gerhardt turned in a solid
6-3, 6-2 result at No. 4. Capoferri and Kessler secured the easiest win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, while both Brown and Sierra Stoltzfus, at No. 2, and Kendal Winters and Gerhardt, playing No. 3, picked up 8-5 results. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team hosted Manheim Central in the season opener last Monday afternoon. The result was not what head coach Gino DiSomma was looking for. Things were looking good when Derek Eckman converted a penalty kick in the 14th minute of the first half but the Pioneers struggled after that. In fact, L-S finished with just one corner and one shot on the day. The Barons, last year’s District Three runners-up, were awarded 10 corners, delivered 9 shots and cruised to a 4-1 win. On the road Thursday, L-S again got off to a good start when Logan Heister assisted Caden Wise with the first goal of the game just three minutes in. McCaskey tied the game in the 39th minute and then took control with not just one, but two
second half goals in a game where the stats were fairly even. McCaskey held a 5-4 edge in shots and led 8-6 in corners. In non-league play Friday, the Pioneers fell to 2-4 on the season with a 1-0 double overtime loss to Hershey. Calieb Wigley denied 14 of Hershey’s 15 shots on goal but that final shot, in the 96th minute, proved to be the difference. GIRLS’ SOCCER On Saturday, September 8, the Pioneers unleashed 23 shots on goal, gave up just four and only came away with a 1-1 tie against Northeastern. Last Monday they were hoping to continue that offensive onslaught and convert a couple more shots into goal. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The visitors were outshot 8-4 and suffered a 2-0 loss to Manheim Central in the Section Two opener. The Barons’ jumped in front when Maddie Carper delivered a 40-yard shot that sailed over Bella DiCamillo in the 13th minute. They added an insurance goal in the 61st minute. “It was an unfortunate goal,” said head coach Emily Lebo. “It always is

when it is put in from that far out. I felt that we controlled much of the game and that the shot count did not accurately reflect the pace. “Our struggle right now, as a team, is to recognize when to get “selfish” and shoot the ball,” she continued. “We were intense and played the ball at our feet for an equal amount of time as Central, if not more. The difference between us and them currently is Manheim’s ability to capitalize on moments,” she added. “We need to find a way to do that if we want to be successful this season.” Thursday afternoon six different players found the back of the net and the Pioneers gained some confidence with a 6-0 victory over McCaskey. McKenna Conklin opened the scoring midway through the first half with Kendal Hadesty and Emma Gochnauer scoring within two minutes of each other for a 3-0 lead at the break. Two more quick goals sparked the second half with Emma Houck, who assisted twice, finding the net just 20 seconds in and Danielle Dipace matching her effort 2:35 later. Jenna Daveler tallied the final goal in a game where L-S unleashed 34 shots. That momentum, however, did not carry into Saturday’s game against Manheim Township as the squads settled for a 0-0 tie. The closely contested game saw L-S hold a 7-5 edge in shots while the Streaks led 6-5 in corners. DiCamillo secured five saves to earn the draw. CROSS COUNTRY At Octorara last Tuesday, the lady harriers placed five runners in the top 15 but it wasn’t enough for a sweep. The Pioneers blanked Cocalico 15-55 but suffered a 17-45 loss to Donegal and dropped a close one, 25-31, to Octorara. Micah Gordley followed three Donegal runners and one from Octorara to the finish line, leading the
Pioneers with a 5th place finish in 23:00 flat. Colleen Gilbert ran second, taking 10th place in 23:53 while Kyla Drouillard (13th, 24:41), Tori Smith (14th, 24:51) and Hannah Schultheis (15th, 25:11) rounded out the top five. Close behind was Madeline Helm (17th), Molly Wissler (19th), Gabrielle Burdge (20th) and Payton King (21st). “We had a great effort on a very muddy and wet course,” said head coach Mari Cunningham. “Our pack did a nice job but they need to finish a bit higher.” The boys’ team, on the other hand, remained undefeated. They dominated Octorara 15-55, beat Donegal 18-47 and snuck past Cocalico 28-30. The Eagles snagged three of the top four places but the Pioneers packed it in after that, pushing four runners across the finish line before Cocalico’s fourth runner. Jansen Miller led the way with a second place finish in 18:08, just 12 seconds behind Cocalico’s Evan Kreider. “Jansen ran a great race and stayed with Kreider most of the way,” Cunningham said. Leading the pack was Daniel McMichael (6th, 19:17) and following was David Helms (7th, 19:27), Zach Kingsley (8th, 19:36) and Colten Morris (9th, 19:40). Also placing in the top 15 was Nathan Eberly (11th, 19:44), Luka Vranich (12th, 19:47) and Thomas Sellers (14th, 20:06). VOLLEYBALL With mixed results last week, the volleyball team sits at 2-2 in Section Two, along with Manheim Central, and behind Garden Spot and E-town, both 3-0. L-S opened the week with a sweep over Ephrata (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) despite Haley Hoover out of the starting lineup with an ankle injury. Kyra Hersh, Lily Hoke and

FOOTBALL The battle for the Lampeter Bowl took place in Witmer this past Friday night as the Pioneers traveled to CV to defend their trophy. That, unfortunately did not happen as four costly turnovers proved to be Lampeter’s undoing in a 20-7 loss. “I thought we did a lot of things well, said Pioneer boss John Manion. “After the first quarter we did a nice job stopping their run and we owned the third quarter but came up empty with missed opportunities. It came down to execution and we didn’t execute. CV chewed up 9:44 of the clock in the first quarter and wound up missing a field goal. They went in front early in the second quarter, needing four plays in just over a minute to find the end zone. L-S responded with a 15 play drive
where Daisy Frank deflected it past the Baron keeper. “We had so many beautiful shots, Swarr recalled. “And Chloe Blantz and Julia Smecker rocked it on the line as well.
But the Barons came up big in the second half, taking the lead on a penalty stroke with just under eight minutes left and icing the game with 1:23 left to play.

Betsy Brenneman however, picked up the slack. Brenneman recorded 10 kills, put up 4 blocks and settled for 8 digs and Hersh delivered timely aces throughout to keep L-S in front. The Mounts, coming off a three-set loss to Penn Manor the night before, took a 10-8 lead in the third set before Hersh sparked a pair of 4-0 runs to put the hosts comfortably back in front. Two nights later, L-S traveled to defending Section Two champ Elizabethtown and suffered a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-17, 25-16). Hoke came up big in this one, putting down 6 kills and serving up 2 aces but it wasn’t enough to offset a 13 kill effort from the Bear’s Sydney Stewart.
Jocelyn Branco came up big and prevented even more scoring opportunities for Donegal, noted Swarr. “And Makayla Malcolm worked the entire 60 minutes. Two nights later, L-S built a 16-4 advantage in corners and led 12-5 in shots on goal over visiting Manheim Central but, believe it or not, it wasn’t enough as the Barons tallied two unanswered goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and finish on top. “I don’t even know what to say, stated Swarr. “We completely dominated the game. The defense was outstanding. Kate and Jocelyn were rock stars! Jocelyn even had one defensive save and was key to keeping the ball from even getting into the circle. And Kate’s timing in picking off passes was right on. And Makayla had a huge defensive save as well. Manheim went in front with a goal at the 14 minute mark but L-S found the equalizer six minutes later. Thorius received a corner insert from Garber and sent the ball to the right post

that covered 65 yards in seven minutes and resulted in a Joey Underwood (10 rushes, 38 yards) one yard spurt that knotted the game at 7-7 with 1:41 left in the half. L-S started the second half with a 67 yard drive that ended with a fumble. Their next possession ended with an interception at the CV 11. In all, the Pioneers committed four turnovers. The Bucks went in front early in the fourth quarter when QB Bradley Stoltzfus hit Joe Cardina with a 34-yard score. A fumble recovery late in the game set up their third score, a three yard run. “Joey Underwood ran the ball well, said Manion, “and Gabe Frederick (8 solo, 5 assists) and Cam D’Imperio (7 solo, 4 assists) both tackled well. Plus Tyler Phenegar came up with, for the second game in a row, three sacks. “The defense gave up 20 points in a game where the offense needed to find more, he added. “This week (against Garden Spot 0-4) we need to see how we rebound after a tough loss. FIELD HOCKEY Donegal’s field hockey team finished second in the state last year. Their leading scorer, Mackenzie Allessie, did not graduate and did the bulk of the heavy lifting in the Indians’ 12-3 win over visiting Lampeter-Strasburg last Tuesday. Allessie, who has 29 goals on the year to date, poured in seven with five of them coming in the second half. The Pioneers fell behind 5-0 in the first half but head coach Katrina Swarr was encouraged when her team scored three after the break. “It was fun to see how excited my team was to score when we were already down, said Swarr. “And then we scored back-to-back goals. Daisy Frank netted the first goal, followed by Abby Thorius. Julz Garber scored on a reverse shot after playing man-to-man on Allessie all night. “And we had more opportunities, for sure, Swarr added. “I still say this is by far the best offensive unit that I have coached. “I thought we looked intimidated to start and then we settled down and played much better, the coach continued. “Allessie and our high number of turnovers were major problems. “Defensively, Kate Smith and

Disaster Relief Auction Scheduled The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a
tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car

The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.

The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day.

Jennifer Cavalcante is a photographer. “I (take pictures) of (wildlife), animals, and people,” explained Cavalcante, as she held a print of flowers so vividly hued the piece resembles a painting. “(This photograph) is printed on watercolor paper, and the paper makes (the colors) really pop,” she said. Cavalcante will be one of nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature about a dozen high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will bring to sell at the show will include jewelry, mixed media, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, and more. The show is billed as a child-friendly and petfriendly event. Artist Paris Llanso, known for her distinctive paintings featuring bright colors and large amounts of oil paint sculpted with a palette knife, will showcase her work including a painting of a birch tree she refers to as her “Skittles tree” because she used all the hues of the fruity
candy in the piece. Lisa Madenspacher has turned her interest from goats, which she featured at the 2017 show, to pool, with a painting of oversized brightly colored billiard balls being among the pieces she will bring to the show. “I am continually inspired by my environment,” said Madenspacher. “I see composition,” she added, noting that she was invited to a dinner party and noticed the pool table at the venue. “Wherever I go, I am observant of my environment,” she stated. Stephen Gambone’s artwork was chosen as the logo for this year’s show. Gambone is a selftaught painter who has had a passion for art from an early age. For 2018, his featured work will include the painting on which the logo is based, an abstract skyline featuring shapes in uniform lines reminiscent of a circuit board. “It’s simple, but it’s complex,” noted Gambone. During the event, organizers will hold hourly drawings for gift certificates toward the purchase of artwork. Each attendee will receive a ticket as he or she enters the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Both admission and parking are free, and additional parking will be available this year in the field on the

Solanco community and beyond, Hess said. “The mass choir will include singers in grade nine through adult, while a children’s choir will involve students in grades four through eight. Hess noted that interested singers should be able to read music or learn parts on their own with the assistance of rehearsal tracks, which will be provided. There will be a number of rehearsals, the dates of which are being confirmed. There is a cost to participate, but part of the fee will be refunded after the sheet music is returned following the concert. The deadline to register to participate in one of the choirs is Monday, Oct. 1. The SLC Community Choirs groups will be joined in the concert by the Solanco High School jazz band and chorale. Tickets for admission will go on sale closer to the event. All proceeds from the event will support the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF), which funds numerous teacher grants and student scholarships each year. Hess related that her children attend fifth grade and kindergarten at Solanco schools, and she teaches private piano and voice lessons to families in the district. As a result, she is aware of the foundation and the work it does. Hess noted that the choirs have hosted community events to fund two $2,000 scholarships, but the logistics are challenging. “We decided, why reinvent the wheel? See Singers pg 15
