CommUNITY 5K Will Support Transitional Housing By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We do have a house,” said Dave Firestone, a member of the steering committee for the Homes of Hope program in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We are in the process of getting it ready for a family and hoping to have the first family in around November.” Homes of Hope is a program that operates through Love INC of Lancaster County. It provides transitional housing and mentorship for families experiencing homelessness. The program helps students remain in their districts so they have less disruption to their lives. The location of the new
Homes of Hope house will remain confidential to preserve the dignity of its short-term residents. Only mentors and Homes of Hope staff members will know the exact address. The steering committee has raised funds to cover the cost of rent, utilities, and upkeep through the annual CommUNITY 5K event. On the occasion of last year’s 5K, Firestone expressed his hope that the group would secure a home and be hosting a family by the end of 2017. Unfortunately, the group encountered difficulty in finding a suitable house. “It’s very hard to find a house that’s affordable, so the search continued. Somebody actually came to us and said a family was moving out of their place, and they thought it would be great for this program,” Firestone explained. “It’s The organizers of the fifth annual CommUNITY 5K hope to draw a crowd for

Two notable musicians will be featured during the 33rd annual Apple Festival hosted by Boehm’s Chapel Society. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the campus of Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street. Vocalist Katie Wieand of Strasburg and woodwind specialist Tim Price of Reading will perform with Gracenotes, a 20piece jazz band from Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street. The group was formed by Darin Esterly, the music and arts coordinator at GCC, who plays saxophone in the band. Gracenotes is one facet of the music ministry at GCC, with many of the band members also playing in the congregation’s worship bands. Gracenotes members range in age from 16 to 70s and in skill from student to professional. “Gracenotes tries to play at holidays, about four times a year. This is our first time to venture off-campus,” Esterly remarked. “We are inching more toward getting out there and showing what God is doing through musical arts.” The jazz band specializes in standards from the 1940s to 1960s. “We try to have the American songbook: Count Basie, Mancini, Gershwin, and more,” Esterly said. CCAP Awards Posted Certification. With their rising mental health population, they recognized a need to improve staff training and education about signs and symptoms of mental illness, for all staff, especially custody supervisors and correctional officers. Staff was trained through Mental Health First Aid USA, an eight-hour course that teaches a five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer and self-help care. This approach is demonstrating results throughout the prison and better outcomes for both inmates and staff. The 2018 recipient of the Juvenile Alternatives Program Award is Lancaster County for their P.U.L.S.E. Evening Treatment Center. Lancaster County’s Juvenile Court, the Office of Juvenile Probation, and the Children and Youth Agency were experiencing a reduced accessibility to specialized programs, as well as the closure of some residential facilities. This resulted in their need to seek out opportunities to keep low to moderate risk juveniles within close proximity to home and community resources which could parallel the successful outcomes of longterm placements. The Youth Intervention Center initially developed the P.U.L.S.E. Weekend Program with the objective of providing short-term, evidence-based treatment with the goal of diverting juveniles away
from the need for long-term placements. The participant’s goals, program length, and groups will be determined based on recommendations from the juvenile probation officer or children and youth caseworker, consultation with the parents/guardians, and results of various assessments. The youths participate in evidence-based programs, as well as psycho-educational groups. The results are demonstrated in improved outcomes for juveniles and their families. The Partner Award recipient is Carolyn McKenna, director of development at Home of the Sparrow in Chester County. Trauma histories, substance use, housing and self-sufficiency are among the challenges facing women’s successful re-entry from incarceration in Chester County’s criminal justice system. Partnering with the County Criminal Justice System, Home of the Sparrow provides case management services to women reintegrating into their communities following the Collaborative Casework-Women Model developed by the National Institute of Corrections. Home of the Sparrow embraces the philosophy that case management for justice-involved women should be a dynamic, seamless process from entry into the system and continue until the woman is stabilized in her community with the goal of not only reducing criminal behavior but increasing the health and wellbeing of women, their families, and community. The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) recently bestowed Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century Best Practices Awards. The 2018 Best Practices Award in the large county jail category was presented to Lancaster County Prison for their PrisonStat Program, an active leadership strategy to achieve transparency, accountability, and efficiency at the prison, drive real measurable results, and help turnaround within the organization. First initiated in 2016, PrisonStat is modeled on the Performance Stat idea which is an active leadership model that uses an ongoing series of regular meetings during which the chief executive and/or leadership team uses current data to analyze aspects of an organization’s performance. This continuing analysis of predetermined metrics produces results by pushing the organization toward performance targets. It also provides leaders with the ability to articulate to the organization and public what improved results need to be demonstrated. Each department head is assigned a metric pertaining to their job description, and are responsible for oversight of a specific area. They are held accountable during the public meeting scheduled every two months and their performance is transparent for the public to see whether positive or negative. An Honorable Mention in the large jail category was awarded to Berks County Prison for their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Finding Hope By Ann Mead Ash
This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” Cathi Myers, who has long provided leadership for the event, which will celebrate its 10th observance this year, echoed Didden’s comments. “We want to bring hope to people and help them find hope,” she said, noting that the theme of the 2018 service will be “When People With Mental Illness Don’t Want Help: Finding Hope.” “This topic is so relevant,” said Myers. This year’s service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Sponsoring ministries include No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM) and Faith Friendship Ministries. Assisting with the event is Minds Renewed,
Chicken Corn Soup and Bake Sale
which meets at Calvary Church and is a division of Handi-Vangelism Ministries in Ephrata. Members of the organizing committee include Myers and Didden, as well as Clara Ames, executive director of NLAM, and Vicki Bollman, a volunteer with Minds Renewed. A number of experienced speakers will give presentations at the event. Dr. Karla Campanella, a family doctor and a missionary who is now a psychiatrist in the Philhaven system, will speak on the topic “Involuntary Commitment or 302.” Campanella will delve into what involuntary commitment involves, who can initiate it, and when to use it. “She will help people understand that process,” said Myers, who noted that Campanella has been well received as a past speaker. Dr. Susan Cabouli, a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an explanation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance and denial of treatment in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has

Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews

Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Day will be observed on Sunday, Sept. 30, and CureLGMD2i Foundation vice president Kelly Brazzo, who co-founded the organization with her husband, Keith, is excited. “It will be the first time we’re all gathering under one umbrella, Kelly explained. “There are more than 30 types of LGMD, and they’re continuing to be diagnosed. The Brazzos have gained an incredible knowledge of LGMD in the decade since their daughter Samantha was born. After learning that Samantha had the 2i version of LGMD, the Brazzos launched a foundation to promote treatments and a cure. In order to raise funds, the family, which lives in the Hempfield School District, has hosted a game night for seven years and held a golf outing for the first time last year. “When we get our cure, we’ll keep doing (the game) night for other causes, Kelly remarked. Through the two events last year, CureLGMD2i brought in more than $50,000. That money helped the organization give a $60,000 grant to the University of Massachusetts medical school, which is working with humanized mouse models to test gene therapy. In the past year, Kelly traveled to the school, where she helped to create a 2i steering committee composed of researchers, pharmaceutical developers, and people with 2i from all around the world.
The foundation has also given about $140,000 to a clinical trial at Kennedy Krieger. The first human trial of a myostatin inhibitor has produced no negative side effects, but positive impacts have not yet been reported, Kelly said. She added that the foundation is considering cofunding a study on ribitol supplementation. Although it is early in the development process, Kelly is cautiously optimistic that it will be a potential treatment for the wasting muscles experienced in the hip and shoulder areas by those with LGMD2i. “Just because it works in mice doesn’t mean it will work in humans, Kelly said. The foundation’s fundraisers offer an enjoyable way to raise awareness about LGMD2i and to support research. Both events will be held this year on Saturday, Oct. 13. The golf outing will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and take place at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. The participation fee will include light refreshments at check-in and lunch after the scramble-format game. The game night will be held at Eden Resort & Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, from 6 to 11 p.m. The event for adults age 21 and older will feature a variety of games hosted by professionals, food stations, unlimited beverages, and live and silent auctions. Field Hockey Team Wins Four Games in Five Days by Mona Steinhauer
Playing four games in five days, the Pioneers racked up 22 goals on the week, gave up just one and improved to 4-2 in section play and 7-2 overall with four straight victories. Monday in Quarryville the Pioneers earned their first shutout with a 7-0 result over Solanco. Julz Garber and Chloe Blantz each scored twice as L-S extended its 3-0 first half lead. Abby Thorius, Julia Smecker and Kelsey Kimmel, with her first goal of the year, rounded out the scoring. “The fact that I have many capable scorers is a blessing,” said head coach Katrina Swarr. “I am amazed at their ability to read the defense and decide to pass, shoot or play 1 v 1 on the goalie.” At home on Tuesday, L-S put up identical numbers. With 31 shots on goal, the Pioneers scored seven times and denied visiting Elizabethtown.
Garber led the way with another two goal game while Frank, who also dished out three assists, matched her efforts. Smecker, Thorius and Blantz also found the back of the cage. Makayla Malcolm added three assists and Delaney McCormick needed just one save to preserve the shutout. One day later, L-S found itself in a much tighter game with visiting Garden Spot but again came out on top, this time 3-1. Scoring twice within five minutes, Garber and Smecker put L-S in front 2-0 in the first half. The visitors cut that led in half with a goal in the 26th minute, but, with a 19-6 advantage in shots on goal, Blantz knocked in a second half tally to pad the lead. “Playing our third game in a row, I think we ran out of a little steam at the end of the first half,” noted Swarr. “The first half was our best, though. Our speed was a factor in
possessing the ball and capitalizing on opportunities.” McCormick was busy this time out, recording seven saves on the day and getting some help with a defensive save by Jocelyn Branco. “I thought we defended well,” she added. “Kate Smith once again prevented many opportunities.” Friday on the road, Thorius netted two first half goals to spark a 5-0 shutout over Cocalico. Summer Peters made it 3-zip at the half while Blantz and Frank extended the lead after the break. FOOTBALL With a total team effort, the football team rebounded after Sept. 15ths loss to CV with a dominating 42-0 shutout over visiting Garden Spot. “We played our best game in all three phases of the game,” noted head coach John Manion. “The defense recorded its second shutout,

holding them to 125 yards and JT Hake (8 tackles), Gabe Frederick (7 tackles) and Christian Garver (6 tackles) stood out against the run,” he continued. “And Logan Bradley had his best game in the secondary with three defensed passes and Johnny Franklin made three special teams tackles.” Alex Knapp led the scoring with a 10 yard run and then hauled in a 47 yard pass from Sean McTaggart for a 14-0 first quarter lead. He also hauled in a 21-yard pass to end the first half and put the Pioneers in front 35-0. McTaggart’s 8 yard TD run in the third quarter capped the scoring. “Sean had a strong game with 7-of-11 passing for 164 yards,” noted Manion. “He also led with 52 rushing yards. Alex Knapp was a standout receiver with three catches for 98 yards and one touchdown.” Seth Beers returned from an injury

and was 6-for-6 in extra points. He is 22-for-22 on the year. Joey Underwood added the first score of the second quarter, a 29-yard scamper, and a one yard plunge by Drew Harris accounted for the only TD of the second half. VOLLEYBALL In non-league play last Monday, the Pioneers found themselves in a tight contest with Eastern York but failed to come out on top. The hosts prevailed 25-18, 25-10, 23-25, 25-21. Haley Hoover, with a strong presence at the net, recorded 7 kills and 7 blocks but it wasn’t enough to offset Eastern’s Sarah Moore who put down 15. Sierra Stoltzfus recorded 30 assists on the day and served up 3 aces while Elizabeth Breneman anchored the defense with 15 digs.
CROSS COUNTRY The harrier teams traveled to Linden Hall last Thursday for non-league competition. Both squads suffered losses to Palmyra but defeated Ephrata and the girls defeated Linden Hall as well. “Eighty-five percent of both teams combined earned PR’s,” noted head coach Mari Cunningham. Jansen Miller led the way with a third place time of 17:06. David Helms (7th, 18:26) and Thomas Sellers (10th, 18:52) both cracked the top ten while Luka Vranich (12th, 19:04) and Nathan Eberly (13th, 19:06) rounded out the top five. Other top 25 finishers included Zach Kingsley (15th), Josiah Zehr (16th), Jacob Long (20th), Grant Kuhn (23rd) and Jared Chin (24th). Micah Gordley matched Miller’s

On September 15 the teams traveled to Big Spring High School to compete in the Ben Bloser Invitational. In the AAA Division, the boys’ finished in 22nd place out of 31 teams. Miller’s 66th place in 18:08 was the best finish of the day. Helms followed in 88th with an 18:32. Vranich (126th, 19:05) was Lampeter’s third runner to cross the line and the 13th freshman to place.
The girls’ team followed Penn Manor to the finish line placing 19th overall. Gordley (55th, 22:08), Gilbert (77th, 22:57) and Drouillard (96th, 23:42) all placed in the top 100. Smith, with a 24:09, was the 24th freshman to finish. She was 103rd overall. GOLF The Pioneers defeated the field at Pine Meadows Golf Course last Monday. It was the second time this season the team swept the
opposition. In the 9-hole event (due to weather), L-S carded a 157 and pushed their overall record to 22-3. They are currently in first place in Section Three with one league match left. Austin Lauver shot the lowest round of the day with a 35. Matt Wilson (39), Pat Holmes (41) and Katie Lapinsky (42) rounded out the counters. Cocalico (178) and Octorara (179) battled it out for second place and will challenge the Pioneers for the section title in the last match of the season. BOYS’ SOCCER In another busy week, the Pioneers picked up two wins against a single loss and sit in fourth place in Section Two at 1-3. L-S opened the week with a non-section game against the last place team in Section One, Penn Manor. The Pioneers fell behind 1-0 in the first half but continued to work for the equalizer. That came eight minutes into the second half on a goal by senior captain Logan Heister. “I told them at halftime that we needed one goal to get us back into the game,” said head coach Gino DiSomma. “After that goal you could
tell the momentum was on our side.” Despite being outshot 14-5, L-S continued to press. That effort led to overtime where senior captain Derek Eckman ripped a left footed shot for the win. “The team played together from start to finish,” DiSomma said. “Inconsistency with passion and fuel to show up every game has been a weakness this year and is a must in Section Two as every game is a dog fight. “Our back four, along with freshman Calieb Wigley (8 saves) held us in the game, especially in the first half,” he added. On the road Wednesday night, the Pioneers worked a 3-0 final over winless Garden Spot. Gavin Shue put L-S on the board when he beat the center back one-onone and finished with a low shot to the right side in the 27th minute. Seven minutes later, Eckman boosted the lead to 2-0 while Caden Wise netted Lampeter’s final goal in the second half. “This was another great team effort,” stated DiSomma. “Everyone got playing time and it was our fourth game with a different back four

goal of the season with three seconds left in the first overtime. L-S held a commanding 19-6 advantage in shots on goal and outcornered the visitors 6-1. Bella DiCamillo recorded five saves. “The girls played very well,” said head coach Emily Lebo. “They were aggressive and kept control of the ball. Unfortunately, we could not find the back of the net. Their goal popped high and right under the crossbar. It was devastating to say the least. “We can play with any team, and for that matter, beat any team we play this year,” she continued. “The only thing holding us back is our ability to find the net. If the girls can figure out how to score, the sky will be the limit.” Friday afternoon’s contest with Elizabethtown was a bit tighter. L-S held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal and led 3-2 in corners but this time notched the game-winner. After 90 scoreless minutes, and the second extra period winding down, Sarah Doutrich tallied her first goal of the season just 30 seconds before the buzzer.

Black Knights on Thursday. Kendall Winters and Ryan Gerhardt, at No. 3, topped Solanco 8-3, fell 8-0 to Catholic and topped Hempfield 8-3. Capoferri cruised to a straight set win over Solanco but dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) outing against undefeated Riley Smith of Catholic High. She then fell 6-3, 6-2 against Hempfield. Kessler opened with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Solanco, beat Catholic’s No. 2, who retired, and but fell 6-2, 6-3 against the Knights. Brown turned in a clean sweep at No. 3. She won 6-1, 6-1 over Solanco, outlasted Catholic’s Meg Grasberger 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) and defeated Hempfield’s Rory Cantwell 6-4, 6-4. Playing No. 4, Gerhardt worked a 6-3, 6-1 win over Solanco before coming up short 6-1, 6-1 against the Crusaders’ undefeated Angelle San Jose. GIRLS’ SOCCER The lady booters found themselves in a pair of overtime games last week and finished with mixed results. Tuesday they dominated every aspect of the game but suffered a 1-0 loss when the Spartan’s Deanna Phillips notched her first

on defense due to injuries.” Looking for a third straight win in their third straight away game, the Pioneers faced Elizabethtown (7-2), one of the top teams in the second and bowed out 2-0. L-S fell to 4-5. “This was a tough loss,” DiSomma said. “And I feel if we played our style of soccer, and not theirs, that we could beat them. Unfortunately, we did not do that. “On the plus side, we did play our style the last 15 minutes but they put all 11 guys back and cleared any threats,” he added. “We look forward to playing them at home.” TENNIS Playing three matches last week, the tennis team worked their seventh shutout of the season against Solanco but dropped a 4-3 clash with undefeated Lancaster Catholic (10-0) and a 4-2 result against Section One’s Hempfield. Sarah Capoferri and Larson Kessler blanked Solanco’ No. 1 doubles team on Tuesday but came up short against both the Crusaders (8-5) and Hempfield (8-0). At No. 2, Izzy Brown and Sierra Stoltzfus earned a hard-fight 8-5 win against the Mares for their only win of the week. They dropped a tight 8-5 match against the Crusaders and lost an even tighter 9-7 result against the

The Moravian Center of Lancaster, 227 N. Queen St., second floor, will host a presentation by a member of the Kara tribe of Ethiopia on Monday, Oct. 1, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but a freewill offering will be received to support the speaker’s work. Light refreshments will be provided. The speaker will be Lale Labuko, a member of the animist Kara tribe living in the remote Lower Omo River Valley in southwest Ethiopia. Labuko is the founder of the nonprofit Omo Child Foundation. His mission is to end the ritual practice of infanticide called mingi, meaning cursed, among the tribes his region. In the region’s culture, children born with certain abnormalities are designated as mingi, and tribes believe they may cause illness, famine, drought and other difficulties. Based on ancient superstitions, the children are killed by the time they are 1 year old. When Labuko learned of this practice, he challenged the tribal elders and kings. Approximately 15 years ago, parents and others began secretly bringing him children to rescue. He and his wife live at an orphanage that houses

Cavod To Offer New Dance Program
Cavod Academy student Lydia Leibee is excited to be taking a new class that the organization is offering for students with developmental disabilities. Two classes exploring a variety of styles of dance will meet weekly at Cavod in New Holland.
Pressley Ridge To Receive Donations Pressley Ridge, an organization dedicated to providing foster care and services for children, adults, and families facing difficult challenges and complex situations, has started a new partnership with OWL Chiropractic Center. The partnership is designed to support Pressley Ridge by bringing in financial and material donations. Through the partnership, all new patient fees at the center will be donated to Pressley Ridge. Additionally, the center holds donation drives in its office. During the holidays, the office displays an angel tree through which patients can supply items such as toys and clothing for Pressley Ridge children. The office is currently collecting new and gently used suitcases to fill with personal hygiene products such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, tissues, and other items to be given to children in foster care. Pressley Ridge is headquartered in Pittsburgh, with central Pennsylvania offices in Lancaster, York, Harrisburg, and Camp Hill. For more information on Pressley Ridge, readers may visit www.pressleyridge.org.
Dienner noted that the students with developmental disabilities taking private lessons have enjoyed their accomplishments. “The students ... here have just blossomed,” she said. “We thought, ‘Let’s start a program where they can learn to dance at a (comfortable) pace, with a goal of transitioning students into another class as their capabilities improve.’” Dienner noted that a limited number of scholarships are available to cover half of the cost of a class. Classes began the week of Aug. 27, but it is not too late to register. Readers who would like to sign up or apply for a scholarship may visit www.cavodacademy.com. Individuals who have questions about the new class may call 717-354-3355.
Golf Outing To Support “Night To Shine” The inaugural Night to Shine Golf Outing Fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy. The event will feature a scramble format and will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Separate costs have been set for individuals and for groups of four, and there is a dinner-only option. Registration includes golf, the use of a cart, range balls, a gift bag, oncourse beverages and snacks, and a catered dinner. The dinner, which will be served at approximately 6 p.m., will consist of barbecued chicken and ribs, baked beans, a seasonal vegetable, a salad bar, rolls, and assorted desserts. Special on-course challenges and add-ons such as mulligans will be available, and bundles
may be purchased at sign-in on the day of the event. Cash prizes will be given to the first-, second-, and third-place teams, and there will be a cash prize for the low team total on all par 8 holes. A minimum of 72 golfers are required for the listed prizes; if fewer than 72 golfers take part, prize amounts may vary. All proceeds will support Night to Shine, a prom experience for teenagers and adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. The plan is for the golf event to become annual. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information on the event or sponsorship or to register, readers may contact Cullen Ketcham at 717-333-8177 or msuketcham@gmail.com.

Julie Haney, dance teacher with Cavod Academy, is excited to be instructing students in a new program the academy is developing for students with special needs. “Intro to Dance is for (students) age 13 and up,” said Haney, who has experience teaching students with developmental disabilities. Two classes, which are being held weekly, will explore a variety of types of dance. Students who take the class will have the opportunity to perform in Cavod’s annual recital.
hasn’t had a lot of contact with other students, but when she has (met them), they have been welcoming and kind,” said Helen. “That doesn’t always come naturally, (so) that speaks highly of the academy, (and) it means so much to (Lydia).” Intro to Dance will delve into a number of types of dance, including jazz, modern, and hip-hop, but Haney said she plans to start with a focus on ballet. “Students will come in, stretch, work at the bar practicing positions and steps, (perform) some technical work, and then do across-the-floor progression type steps,” said Haney, who added that she plans to end each class with some imaginative guided dance to reinforce freedom and joy of movement.

Intro to Dance classes are held on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. and on Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Cavod, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Savannah Huyard is teaching one of the classes, and Haney teaches the other class. According to Connie Dienner, executive director with Cavod, the idea for the program grew out of caregiver Deb Bacon’s requests for a class. “(Bacon) brings her clients to Cavod, and she has asked us to (hold dance classes),” explained Dienner, who added that seeing the value in each person is a foundational concept at the academy. “Cavod is a perfect place for (this) program because of the loving and accepting atmosphere here,” said Dienner. “No one will be treated differently. It’s about who you are as a person and not what you can or cannot do.” Twenty-two-year-old Lydia Leibee of New Holland has taken private dance lessons at Cavod for some time, but this fall as a member of the Intro to Dance program, she will take a class at Cavod for the first time. Lydia, who has taken worship dance with lyrical dance mixed in, shared that she loved taking lessons at the academy. “My teacher is awesome,” said Lydia, who noted that Huyard has been reassuring and always takes time to pray with her when she asks. Lydia’s mother, Helen, said that Lydia likes dancing because it gives her exercise and energy, but she added that the benefits are more than physical. “It has opened a window (for Lydia),” said Helen, who added that Lydia had always dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast. “Even though (Lydia) recognizes she can’t do gymnastics, her (dance) recitals have been amazing.” Helen also spoke glowingly of Lydia’s experience meeting other students at Cavod. “She
