“(The congregation is) older than the United States,” boasted Millie Patterson, a member of groups for women and quilters at St. Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg, which is 264 years old. The holiday bazaar and craft fair is not quite that old, but no one is quite sure when it began. “It’s been held since at least 1992, when I started coming to the church,” Patterson said. “It’s probably gone on longer than that, but it has been off and on.” The bazaar will definitely be on this year. The event will be held indoors at the church on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Approximately 10 vendors will sell handcrafted items in the areas of sewing, woodworking, beading, allergenfree soaps and fragrances, and more. Items made from alpaca fiber will be

Baked goods will be available as well. Apple dumplings may be purchased frozen for takeout or heated for eating on-site. Church members made 446 dumplings with Cortland apples on Sept. 22, and another work day was set for Oct. 6 to make even more. “They are very good,” Patterson commented, adding, “(The bazaar) keeps our women’s group going for the year.” Proceeds from the bazaar will be used by the women’s group to contribute to local organizations like Christ’s Home, Clare House, and the Lampeter-Strasburg Santa’s Helper project, as well as families in need, disaster relief, meals for funerals held at the See Holiday Bazaar pg 2

RTCM Banqet Will Feature David Ring By Ann Mead Ash

Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), has known speaker David Ring for more than a decade. “I met David Ring in 2005 at the Sanford Teen Challenge in Sanford, Fla.,” recalled Santiago. “I was the director of education there when he came to speak.” Santiago had heard of Ring through the church community, and he was so impressed with Ring’s story that he remembered it and kept Ring in mind when he was in need of a speaker for the third annual RTCM fall banquet on Monday, Nov. 5, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open for fellowship and appetizers at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ring, who was born with cerebral palsy, became an orphan at the age of 14.

He endured ridicule and embarrassment because of his disabilities, but Ring found acceptance and self-respect after beginning a relationship with Christ, which has sustained him and allowed him to overcome in spite of his circumstances. Ring has shared his story with thousands of people since he began speaking in 1973. Santiago has heard Ring speak several times now, and he recalls points from the story that continue to resonate with him. “When (Ring) was born, he didn’t breathe,” explained Santiago. Medical personnel, believing Ring was dead, ignored the baby for nearly 20 minutes. “That’s a miracle,” said Santiago. “Who doesn’t breathe for 20 minutes and lives?” When Ring was orphaned, his older sister took him in. “(Ring’s) older sister was a believer, and she introduced him to the Lord,” noted Santiago. RTCM, located at 2324 Leaman Road,

Lancaster, strives to help men who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 students since February. At this time, six students live in the facility along with two graduates who are serving as interns and four live-in staff members. The facility can accommodate up to a dozen students. Santiago noted that one way the ministry helps students to beat addiction is through significant amounts of Bible study and training. “We have a track record of working toward a minimum of 20 hours a week of either spiritual or life skill classes with the men in this house,” said Santiago. “In a month’s time, that is 80 hours of discipleship classes.” According to Santiago, the banquet will start off with appetizers, followed by a salad bar. The main meal will include broasted chicken, barbecued pork, green beans, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese.

A dessert bar will offer guests a variety of sweet treats from which to choose. A Chinese auction that will be part of the banquet will include up to a halfdozen items. Special music will be provided by Jameson Road Band. Business and table sponsorships for the event are available. Tickets are required to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Monday, Oct. 15. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to learn more about RTCM may visit www.restartministry.org. Those who would like to sponsor a table or register to attend the banquet may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restartministry.org.

Cristabelle Braden will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Braden is a singer, a songwriter, and a speaker on brain injury, and she is the founder of Hope After Head Injury. After suffering a traumatic brain injury as a young teenager, she has achieved many things that were previously thought impossible, including graduating from college, releasing three albums of original music, and touring the country as a singer and speaker on brain injury. She never wrote a song before the brain injury, but within the first month of recovery, she wrote many songs. In February 2017 she released an original EP, titled “Hope Survives,” with songs all about her journey related to brain injury. She has toured all over the country to sing and speak at brain injury support groups, rehab centers, conferences, prison ministries, homeless shelters, music venues, and more. In the fall of 2017, she marked her radio debut with “Let the Sun In.” Her goal is to use music to share her hope-filled story of rehabilitation from brain injury as a way to encourage and empower others going through similar circumstances. Hope After Head Injury aims to provide a support system that focuses on the emotional aspect on healing from brain injury, with an emphasis on online support. Admission to the event is free. Emmaus Road Cafe offers coffee beverages, Italian sodas and baked goods for sale. The cafe may be contacted at emmausroadcafe@gmail.com or at 717478-3672. Information is also available by visiting www.emmausroadcafe.org or searching for “Emmaus Road Cafe” on Facebook.

Pioneer Break Out With 6-0 Win Over McCaskey by Mona Steinhauer

Unfortunately, a 1-0 loss were the first team to hold them to just one goal. The girls’ gave a gutsy performance and showed they can play with anyone.” Unfortunately that showing didn’t result in a win on Friday as the Pioneers battled Garden Spot to a 0-0 tie despite holding a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. FOOTBALL The football team went against some stiff competition this past Friday night and came home with an even stiffer 43-7 loss to the undefeated Barons of Manheim Central. The Barons wasted little time in setting the tone for their homecoming game, taking the opening kickoff 85-yards to the house and never looking back. half, a 14-yard strike that completed the scoring. “They were, by far, the better team,” said head coach John Manion. “They outplayed us. I do think our defense improved in the second half. Offensively, we had three nice drive for the game.” Lampeter’s lone score came early in the second quarter when Sean McTaggart found Joey Underwood with a 31-yard strike. McTaggart completed 16-of-29 attempts for 113 yards with Underwood hauling in five of them for 31 yards. Bryan McKim and Austin Stoltzfus also had three receptions for a combined 42 yards. In the rushing department, however, the Pioneers were slow to get going and finished with just 47 yards. McKim had 18 of those yards. “Defensively, Joey and Gabe Frederick just played great,” said Manion. “They each finished with 16 tackles. It would have been a much longer night without them on the field. “Jacob Kopelman should also be complimented,” he continued. “He had five tackles, a sack and two blocked punts but even more noticeable was that he had the right attitude all night.” The Pioneers travel to Quarryville this week to defend the Milk Jug Trophy. “Their offense is clicking and we’re coming off a tough game,” stated Photo by Don Scanlin Manion of the matchup with Solanco. Wilson, however missed the 80 cut by one stroke. “He’s just a freshman so this was a good start for him,” said head coach Mike Chioda. position to qualify for Regionals,” said Chioda. “He just had a tough break on 17 with a double bogey. “Kate, however, did qualify,” he continued. “Her 80 on Friday along with Saturday’s 79 were her two best rounds of the season. I think her prior best was an 84 and this course is a bit longer than what she’s used to,” he added. “Last year, as a freshman, she qualified for day one but didn’t make the Regional cut. This year she finished alone in sixth place.” Regionals will take place October 15 at Golden Oaks. Prior to that, the Pioneers will look to claim the Section Two crown in their last section match of the season this week. VOLLEYBALL Playing twice last week, the volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to the top team in Section Two, Garden Spot, on Tuesday but bounced back with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ephrata on Thursday. The Pioneers got off to a slow start against the Spartans, falling behind 9-0 in the first set and never quite getting on a roll. They lost 25-11, 25-15, 25-20. “We did get stronger as the match continued but couldn’t find our passing groove,” said assistant coach Chad Brenneman. “They served tough (10 aces) and our serve receive wasn’t where we needed it to be. Plus we made too many serving errors. “Our net play wasn’t bad and our middle blockers, Haley Hoover and Betsy Brenneman, led the way with

three kills each,” he added. Brenneman also led with three aces and added a pair of blocks while Hoover recorded four digs. Also contributing was Sarah Stoltzfus with 10 assists. After blanking Ephrata 3-0 at home back on Sept. 11, the Pioneers found the going a bit tougher on the road but pulled out a 3-2 thriller. “We went with a completely new lineup and rotation to try and maximize our serve receive success,” said Brenneman. “Unfortunately the experiment didn’t go as planned and we dropped the first and third sets, but came out on top in the fifth set after returning to our original lineup.” The hosts jumped out with a 25-11 first set win and rode that momentum the rest of the night, making L-S work for every point. The Pioneers came back in the second set and pulled out a 25-23 thriller only to see Ephrata answer with a 30-28 third set win. L-S stifled that momentum with a solid 25-18 fourth set and recorded the win with a tougher 16-14 final set. Kyra Hersh served up 8 aces on the night and Brenneman added five solo blocks. TENNIS Playing in both the team playoffs and the L-L League Flight Tournament made for a busy week for the girls tennis team. Monday they faced Lancaster Country Day at CV and came away with a 3-1 victory. Sarah Capoferri, at No. 1, and Izzy Brown, playing No. 3,

both secured straight set wins while Sierra Stoltzfus and Nora Holmes earned a come-from-behind three set win in doubles to cap the result. In Tuesday’s semifinal round, moved to Racquet Club West, the girls battled Manheim Township, the top team in Section One, and were dealt a 3-0 setback. The Streaks went on to beat CV for the team title. In the Flight Tournament, Capoferri, seeded 3rd, will battle for third place this week having advanced to the semifinals with straight set wins over Penn Manor’s Julia Ward and MC’s Hanna Kowalski. She was bounced to the consolation bracket with a straight set loss to Township’s Emily Gavin. In Flight 2, fourth seed Larson Kessler opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Garden Spot’s Paige Kemper before bowing out with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Catholic’s Angelle San Jose. Brown, also seeded fourth, bowed out with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 loss to PV’s Adalie Clemmer while Ryan Gerhardt, playing No. 4, had the best showing of all, advancing all the way to the finals. She opened with a straight set win over Spot’s Leah Strausser and dispatched Hemp-

field’s Tierney Cantwell 6-1, 6-1 before working a 6-3, 6-1 upset over top seed Sophie Steed of CV. Gerhardt will face No. 2 seed Claire Andrews, of Cedar Crest, in this week’s finals. CROSS COUNTRY The boys’ cross country team kept pace with Manheim Central last week, collecting wins over Columbia and Garden Spot to remain in a tie for first place with a 10-1 record. In their only home meet of the season, the Pioneers blanked a depleted Columbia squad 15-55 and dominated the Spartans as well, 18-45. Jansen Miller outran the field with a first place time of 17:18. David Helms clocked an 18:23, along with Garden Spot’s Jeremy Risser, but earned second by a nudge. Daniel McMichael (18:38), Nathan Eberly (18:41), and Luka Vranich (18:47) claimed 4th through 6th to round out the counters while Thomas Sellers (8th, 19:09) and Colten Morris (9th, 19:10) finished in the top ten. “Finally a nice day to run but our course has been muddy all season,”

noted head coach Mari Cunningham. “Our course is usually pretty fast but the muddy conditions slow you down. Despite the conditions, and the fact that the other two teams were pretty small, half of our team clocked season personal records,” she added. “Jansen pulled away fairly early in the race and was never challenged.” The girls’ posted similar results, blanking the Tide, 15-55 and cruising past the Spartans, 20-42. Micah Gordley pushed out to a first place finish in 21:36 with teammate Colleen Gilbert just ten seconds back in second. Tori Smith split up a pair of Spartan runners for fourth (22:56) with the pack of Kyla Drouillard (6th, 23:34), Molly Wissler (7th, 23:56) and Hannah Schultheis (8th, 24:08) closing out the scoring. Gabrielle Burdge also earned a top ten finish, placing 10th in 24:33. “Micah ran well in the lead for the girls,” said Cunningham. FIELD HOCKEY Despite scoring a season-high 12 goals in a win over Solanco on Friday, the field hockey team went just 1-2 on the week, suffering a 9-1 defeat against undefeated Donegal on Monday and a 1-0 overtime loss against Manheim Central Wednesday. “I thought our defense was outstanding against Donegal,” praised head coach Katrina Swarr. “Kate Smith and Makayla Malcom each had one defensive save and Jocelyn Branco had three. They stalled many opportunities. And it is nice to score against them,” Swarr added of Malcom’s second half tally that was assisted by Chloe Blantz. Unfortunately, Donegal has MacKenzie Allessie, who went over 300 career goals earlier in the week and finished with seven against the Pioneers. Looking to avenge a 3-1 first half loss to the Barons on Wednesday, L-S again controlled the stats department, holding a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 13-4 lead in corners. That, however, did not lead to a goal scored. Scoreless through regulation, the Barons broke through at the 12:28 mark in overtime. “Our corners just aren’t working right now,” explained Swarr. “We were struggling to get the shot off recently but Wednesday we struggled to receive the insert. Hopefully we can correct those issue quickly. I still think we are the better team but we could not finish! “We did move a couple players

around to have some more help on defense, who played extremely well, but maybe that wasn’t such a good idea,” she added. Friday’s dominating win over Solanco featured eight different goal scorers with Kelsey Kimmel’s hat trick leading the way. Daisy Frank, who assisted three times, and Julia Smecker, with two assists, chipped in with two goals each. Abby Thorius, Branco, Summer Peters, and Blantz each added one goal as L-S tallied seven goals in the first half. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team picked up a pair of wins last week and improved to 4-4 in Section Two and 7-6 overall. Derek Eckman’s two goal first half provided all the offense L-S needed in a 2-1 win over McCaskey last Tuesday. Logan Heister was credited with one assist and Calieb Wigley needed just four saves to pick up the win. Playing at home again on Friday, the Pioneers got off to another strong start, scoring three goals in the first half en route to a 4-1 win over Garden Spot. Eckman picked up two more goals and was joined by Caden Wise who also found the back of the net twice. Wrigley (5) and Collin Reinacher (1) both saw time in goal and combined for six saves while Jared Rice and Noah Davis dished out their first assists of the season.

help prepare for the event yearround. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the library and its operating budget for Lancaster Public Library. The Friends group holds several book sales each year that raise nearly $200,000 for the library. Additionally, the Friends have two bookstores that are open year-round: the Book Resort Center (Marshall Street Bookstore), which is also the location for donation processing, and the Juliana Bookstore, located on the first floor of the library’s Lancaster City Branch. For more information about the bookstores and book sales, readers may visit www.lancaster publiclibrary.org/library-friends. Details about the library are available at www.lancaster publiclibrary.org.

Since its genesis in 2010, Prima, a contemporary theater organization in Lancaster, has performed at more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Being nomadic has limited performance dates, consumed nearly one-third of the organization’s annual budget, and depleted nearly 40 percent of staff time, while also inconveniencing audiences. To address this challenge, Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, as well as Sequinox, has made visionary investments toward Prima acquiring a home in the western part of Lancaster city. Formerly known as the Hamilton Ballroom, the new Prima venue, located at 941 Wheatland Ave. in Lancaster, offers 125 free parking spaces with a 200-person capacity. The space will offer flexible seating and staging arrangements, including in-theround, thrust, and proscenium setups. With the design and construction leadership of TONO Group, Prima’s new home is undergoing a transformation to become a contemporary destination for theater, music, film, and special events. Prima will be situated for complete hospitality services with a full kitchen. Illuminated Integration is installing state-of-the-art audio, video, and lighting equipment. Total

improvements include an initial investment of over $500,000. Prima plans to offer multiple series of events, including MainStage and Altro (concert) Series, as well as musically focused film. In addition to Prima programming, the venue will also be a unique venue for business and personal special events. With a grand opening concert production of Piano Men, which will run from Friday, Dec. 7, to Saturday, Dec. 15, Prima will begin offering more performance dates and variety in programming in a wellequipped venue. In order to utilize this new community resource to its fullest potential, a three-year, $3.2 million effort has begun called FWD, launching forward Prima’s new home. Nearly half of the funds to be raised ($1.57 million) have been committed thus far for renovations, lease, and operational growth. Contributions are now being sought for investments in furthering the Prima experience for the Lancaster community. Gifts to FWD will expand artistic programming and support artists, including student internships and local performers. Prima launched the announcement of the new venue with a music video. To view the video or to donate, readers may visit www.primaFWD.org.

Church members will provide homemade and store-bought pies. The corn was grown on the Frackman farm by Deb Hoover and her family, and it was cut and frozen by Miller. The one change this year will be the use of bread cubes for the stuffing. Miller explained that Shirley Girvin’s daughter used to have access to day-old bread that MOPW members would break down for the dish, but that is no longer available, so the group has ordered dozens of bags of pre-cubed bread from a local supermarket. On the day of the supper, men from the church will join MOPW members in the kitchen to lift and carry heavy pans of food. “Everybody pitches in, remarked MOPW member Linda Farmer. The turkey supper is the MOPW’s biggest fundraiser. Its proceeds support the group’s efforts to bless local people in need. The meal also serves another significant purpose. “We get (the public) ready for Thanksgiving, Miller said. For more information about the turkey supper, readers may call Miller at 717786-3690.

The members of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW), with the support of the rest of the congregation at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville, will host their annual turkey supper on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. The all-you-can-eat meal has proven popular since its inception several years ago, as the group usually serves 300 people between dine-in meals and takeouts. “The public seems to enjoy it, commented MOPW member Nancy Harnish. “It’s a good meal for a reasonable price, and if you’re still

hungry, you can go up and get more. Separate prices have been set for children ages 4 to 12 and adults, with admission payable at the door. Children under 4 may dine free of charge. A drive-through line will be open for those who wish to purchase takeouts. The take-home containers will include turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, pepper cabbage, a roll and butter, and pie. Those dining in will be treated to all they care to eat of the takeout menu, with the addition of cranberry sauce and coffee. To prepare for the meal, the MOPW has ordered 400 pounds of turkey breast, 16 heads of cabbage, and 200 pounds of

Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos, explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts. On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. The photographs that will be displayed were taken by photographer Sally Krueger, who donated the photo sessions to the event and who will gift them to those who volunteered to be photographed. Friedrichs said that at the heart of the event is a passion to reach young women who do not know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement, said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental, said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me, said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this, she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding

for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always thought it was about rebellion, said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning. One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart, said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are. Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another, explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community. She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other, she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus. Other members of the Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster Christian Women’s Club hub who are organizing the event include Linda Johnston, Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Marlene Hall, and Joleen Yunginger. There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who would like to attend may register at https://story-marks-lancaster.eventbrite.com.
